Roger got out of the car, thankful for the good weather that let him drive the convertible with the top down. Normal cars are such a nuisance for unicorns.
He stared up at the skyscraper of ERIS Inc. He knew that it was safe. His eyes and pretty much every other sense screamed RUN! The tower had a fairly wide base with the entrances. There was a two story gap between the tower and the base, bridged only by three unequal pillars and the casing of the elevator shafts.
One pillar was shaped like the antler of a deer like animal, one like a horn and the last like a single fang. It was intended to remind you of the origins of ERIS Inc.
What took Roger a few minutes to figure out was the casing of the multiple elevator shafts. It was a fluted spiral that entered the base of the tower proper through an odd looking promenade whose walk-ways twisted about on each side of the spiraled shaft. One almost looked like the letter U. The other resembled the letter R.
Suddenly Roger brayed laughter as he got it. U R Screwed!
His confidence somewhat restored by the crude joke, Roger strode forward and through a large revolving door, into the foyer. He presented the letter that had caused General Iron, Commander of the Equestrian Defense Bureau, to send him here.
The cyclops eyed, but lovely filly at the reception desk scanned the document and said, “Roger, EDB Command, Diplomatic Corps? Welcome to ERIS. Please take the elevator over there.”
She was pointing to an elevator off to one side, under the horn shaped pillar. The two armed guards shifted from ready to shoulder arms at the filly's signal.
One of them, wearing an ERIS Armed Combat medallion with five kill claws, opened the door and respectfully said, “Not many get to use this car, Sir. There are no buttons except a mandatory emergency call button. The car will stop at your destination.”
Roger listened to the door shut with a surprisingly soft whump. As it began its climb, the slight vibration told roger that this car was going a LONG way up. It was being lifted by a cog drive mechanism to avoid the weight and safety issues of long cables.
Elevator music began. It was a selection of Hot Tangos, spicy waltzes and romantic orchestral bits. It was more than a mood setter. Each one was a piece that Roger had used in the seduction of some mare or other lovely female in the past. Roger had 'eclectic' taste in lovers. It spoke reams about ERIS Inc's intelligence service that they knew it in such detail.
The elevator slowed to a stop. The opened door revealed a stunning office with a deep piled X'ibian carpet, huge glass or glass-like windows and a view that faded for sheer distance toward the mountains. Central to his view there was a female dragonequis with the asymmetric display of antler, horn, single fang and limbs. She sat in a comfortably padded chair with a big U shaped desk behind her. In spite of, or perhaps because of, that asymmetry, she was stunningly beautiful. She gestured to a similar chair close by to her own.
As Roger approached, he realized that this arrangement put the incredible view of Equestria in front of her when she was working. It also put her full attention on her visitor.
She had on a nice business suit of a light purple shade that Roger liked. The jacket had only a single button at her waist. Her white blouse had off white lace down the buttoned front. It also had a row of the same lace and buttons across, just above the largest swell of her truly large and shapely bosom.
She stood to greet him, smiling broadly. Her stance revealed that her waist was as trim as her bosom was ample. The one thing that was almost out of place but managed to fit perfectly, was a complex braided hairdo, that sprouted a ponytail reaching nearly to her waist. Her platinum gray hair color contrasted well with Roger's yellow mane.

“Please, Roger, have a seat and study this carefully. I have no need of your credentials. If I did not know you thoroughly, you would not be here.”
Roger said, “Thank you, Eris,” and took the portfolio, accepting the invitation to sit. When he did, the sides of the chair folded up to make excellently designed desk arms to facilitate his study.
As he was working through the complexity of the documents in the portfolio, Roger commented, “While we all know that Eris is a name of Discord, isn't Discord usually a male? At least, that is what I have heard.”
Roger nearly jumped out of his skin when a soft, feminine hand was laid on his. “Oh, Roger, think. Discord has not directly interfered with Equestria for millennia. Indeed, not since the days when Twilight was not a Princess.
“I have worked, as you will see in those documents, what you would call undercover. When it comes to brewing discord, which has the easier time? Male or Female? Ponies and the rest will involve themselves far more easily in a properly presented female scheme. Males are so easily led astray by a female.
“Besides, I am far more comfortable and happier as a female. I have not been a male, except for a few occasions of State, for over a thousand years. That is why this is ERIS, Inc.”
Blinking in surprise, Roger looked up. “Tell me, Roger, why does Discord exist at all?”
Roger stopped cold. “I have never even questioned that. Discord has always been there. You have been the cause of chaos in the lives of ponies and all other intelligent life.”
Eris nodded sadly. “I know. That is why I asked you, though. To show you that there is gaping hole in what you know and assume. My invitation to you and General Iron was not random. I hope that I can show you WHY Discord exists and has from the earliest of times.
“Beyond a lip service, without true understanding, not many can really grasp the reason. You two are different. I hope, different enough.” She reached over and stroked the greenish white fur of Roger's neck and smiled softly.
Roger gazed directly into the luminous eyes of Eris and experienced a slight chill. Those were ancient eyes. The compassion that he saw belied Discord's reputation for lighthearted chaotic playfulness and random disaster. He held his gaze, though he wanted to look elsewhere.
“How old are you, Eris?”
“I do not really know, Roger. I was made, as were the Princesses, but long before them. The beings that made Equestria made several mistakes. I was made to remedy one of those errors. The Princesses were made later, to remedy a more obvious one.”
“I see, I think. What were you made to remedy, Eris?”
“Perfection. Most do not understand the trap of perfection. The ponies and all of the other intelligent beings that the, well . . . call them the Titans, made got along without conflict among themselves or the other groups. They were so stable that even with intelligence and wisdom, they did not develop. Not civilization, not writing, nor new thought. They were stagnating and declining.
“I was made to force them to use the brains that they were given.” Making her lovely ponytail roll in waves, she shook her magnificent, asymmetrical head sadly. “It is thankless work.”
Roger impulsively put an arm around Eris and gave her a gentle hug. “I can understand that. My diplomacy is often the same. Thankless but necessary.” Looking out at the enormous and wonderful world beyond the window, he said, “And all of that, out there, is your work?”
“No, Roger. That is not all my work. Ponies and the rest are very adept at learning the wrong things from chaos and then putting the blame for their own evils on me. I am innocent of most of the bad things that you see and routinely deal with.”
Roger pulled her closer, “And you need help? What can we do?”
She smiled, snuggling into the contact as if it was precious to her and replied, “I am adept at chaos, Roger. There are things that are dangerously past safe limits.
“I need help with establishing safe order. EDB Command is the best of the possible sources of assistance. Will you help me to establish the necessary stability?”
Roger frowned in concentration. “You have never lied. This is very direct. Without consultation, I cannot answer for General Iron. I will say broadly yes, but subject to approval and the working out of details. I really can't go further than that.”
Suddenly Roger's armful of voluptuous dragonequis grinned happily and used his arm for support as she leaned back, looking up into his eyes. “I accept that, Roger! But you most certainly can go further!”

Almost stunned, Roger carefully placed the collar around Eris's neck. The click of the lock was one of those quiet sounds that change worlds, for at least a few.
