After a quick trip to your locker, you make your way to the main entrance of the school. You're relatively new at CHS, having become a new Senior at the school about a month after your 18th birthday. You became a student less than a week after the Battle of the Bands competition, that information being provided by the countless number of mentions you've overheard from random students. You don't know much about it, but you do know that a group of seven girls defeated a trio called the Dazzlings, sending them off the stage in complete shame. You don't know who the Dazzlings are or what they look like; all you know is that everyone pretty much hates them.
You exit the school and take a left at the statue in front, the one that you'd heard leads to another world. However, as a new student, you feel that some people are telling you silly jokes just for fun, and you don't believe that the statue is enchanted.
You walk past the soccer field and are soon at the corner of the fence. There's no afterschool practice today, and no one else is using the field. For no apparent reason, you look to your left and look down the southern wall of the fence. You stop when you see what looks to be someone sitting with their back against the fence. You can see that she's a girl, roughly the age of all the Seniors at CHS, and she looks very sad. Being the kind person that you are, you slowly walk toward her, and you can see that she's barely moving. Her eyes are closed, her head lowered and buried slightly in her knees as she holds her legs to her chest. She has a long ponytail of bright teal with grayish purple, and she's wearing a black jacket, the design of which you've never seen before, but you think it looks pretty on her. She's also wearing a skirt that matches the teal in her hair. You can't recall seeing her before, but there's something about her that makes your brain think a little. You can't help but think that you've seen that face before, and you think it might be from a picture.
Regardless of what your brain is telling you, you decide to see what's troubling her. "Excuse me," you say to her, gently, "What's wrong? Are you okay?"
She ceases her sobbing momentarily and looks up at you, surprised that anyone would come and ask her such a question, given the reputation she's already been given. "N-Not r-really," she stammers.
"Would you like to talk? I'm new here, so you don't have to worry about me judging you or anything like that," you tell her, trying to make her feel a bit more comfortable.
She gives you a warm smile and sighs a bit in relief before replying. "Ummm...sure. I guess so. What's your name?" she asks before you introduce yourself. "N-Nice to meet you." You can tell that she hasn't stopped sobbing for good, as indicated by her slight stutter. "I'm Sonata. Sonata Dusk."
"Nice to meet you, Sonata," you reply, "Now what's troubling you?"
She inhales audibly before saying, "Well, here's the thing. I was part of this singing group that competed here recently, and we almost won, but we were stopped mid-performance by all these girls. "That sounds great," Sonata continues, "Considering that Adagio and Aria probably don't want me back at the apartment."
"Well then, let's go!" You say as the two of you stand up and walk in the direction of your house. Just as you're leaving the school grounds, something comes back to the front of your mind. "Aw, shoot!" you exclaim, "I have to study for the English test tomorrow! Sorry, Sonata, but I may be a bit busy for a while."
"Maybe I could study with you?"
"But...you're not in my class."
"I know, but...you know," she says while casually bumping her side against yours.
"Sure," you reply, "I love study partners."
The air around you is slowly cooling down as the sun sets over the mountainous horizon. It's 7:30, and you and Sonata are having dinner at an outdoor restaurant in Canterlot. You two studied at your house for about three hours before you felt that you were decently prepared for tomorrow's test. You had Sonata quiz you on a few things, and everything worked out perfectly. Now, the two of you are enjoying a simple night out, continuing getting to know each other. "So," you begin, "I'd really like to hear your singing voice, if you're okay with that."
Sonata's eyes widen slightly. "Oh?" she asks, "You know I used my voice for evil, right?"
"Who cares?" you reply, "You said you wanted to move on."
"You're right," she giggles, "And I don't have my red pendant anymore, so I can't put you under my spell," her tone shifts to a mischievous one as she narrows her eyes at you playfully, "Unless you want me to..."

"Okay," she replies in a sing-song voice, "I'm only gonna do a little, though. Don't wanna make people think the Dazzlings have returned and are corrupting the entire town."
You chuckle again. "I know, right?" you reply.
Sonata then takes a deep breath and begins to sing a tune that's familiar to her. "Aaaaahhhh, aahh aahh...aaaaaahhhhh, aaaaahhhh..." she sings in a C Minor-sounding tone.
Your eyes widen upon hearing her voice. Alone, she sounds amazing. You begin to think that the other two Dazzlings were no good for her for a new reason, and that is that they were holding her back from expressing her glorious and uplifting voice. You also think, "Wow, no wonder her name's Sonata!"
"Was that okay?" Sonata asks you.
You jerk your head slightly as her regular speaking voice breaks you of your momentary trance. "Sonata, you have one of the greatest singing voices I've ever heard. You were absolutely astounding!"
She blushes at you again. "Wow, thanks," she replies, "I didn't think you'd like it that much."
