The Griffon ambush was one they had not been expecting, and because of this General Silverhoof's legion had been wiped out entirely. His soldiers had fought bravely giving everything they could to defeat the hoards of Griffons that swarmed them from the moutainside. In the end they held out, but at the sacrafice of so many. General Silverhoof looked around at all the dead corpses that surrounded him. He saw faces he knew and some he didn't have a clue what their name was. He looked at the Griffons and saw that this was only one of their advancement units, which meant there was a whole army on it's way. He called out to the dead ponies that surrounded him."Is anypony alive" he shouted, not expecting to hear a response."Is anypony still alive".
Buried beneath a pile of dead Grifffons and ponies, a unircon called Sparklash trembled as he tried to stop his rapid breathing. Was he dreaming, had all of what just happened been a horrible dream. He pinched himself to try and wake up from this accursed nightmare with no such luck. He knew it wasn't a dream, he just didn't want to believe it. Then he heard a voice calling out. Was it a voice, he wasn't sure. Buried, he dug his way through the bodies to find the source of this voice.
Standing atop a pile of dead Griffons Autumn Slice, the only pegasus in her legion, stabbed a Griffon in the head. She looked across the sea of her fallen comrades and her foes. She thought back to a few minutes ago where her legion had been on it's way to provide support at a pony stronghold when all of a suddon the horns were sounded and death descended upon her legion. She drew her sword from the griffon and put it back in it's sheath. Just as she did she saw a figure calling out from amongst the bodies. She was to far away to hear what the pony was saying and she flew straight towards the pony.
The two other ponies reached the voice and were suprised to find it was their commanding officer General Silverhoof. He was as suprised to see them."Well I'm glad at least somepony else is alive".
"The feeling is mutual sir" Autumn replied giving her General a slute."My name is Autumn Slice, sir".
"Well Autumn, I'm glad to see your alive, and what about you son, what's your name" he said turning to Sparklash.
"My name is Sparklash, sir" the unicron said trembling.
"Well Sparklash, Autumn I'm glad your both alive but I have bad news. That was only an advancement unit which means their is an entire Girffon army headed our way". Autmumn repostioned herself to try and not look worried while Sparklash nearly burst into tears.
"Is anypony coming for us, sir" Autumn asked, only the smallest bit of fear showing in her eyes.
"Not a single one" Silverhoof responded."Which means we are on our own. And do you know what we are going to do" he asked them.
"Retreat" Sarklash said hopefully.
"FIGHT" the General shouted."We are going to fight those Griffon bastards and show them what happens when you kill one of us" he said with all the confidence in the world burst from him."That army is going to come through this passage and we are going to hold them off as long as we can, one final act for her majesty". The two other ponies stared at their General.
"What do you need us to do General" Autumn asked, standing to attention.
"That's the attitude soldier. I want you to use the bodies to build small barracades to slow them down, Sparklash you help me to gather any weapons from our fallen brothers and sister". Autmun created small mounds of bodies and the General and Sparklash gathered all the weapons they could carry. They gathered at the very front mound.
"So what is the plan of attack" Sparklash asked.
"We fight them at each mound until we must retreat, then at the last mound we fight till death".
"I'm never going to see my family again" Sparklash said pulling a small necklace out of his pocket.
"Neither will I" said Autumn.
"We all will miss our familes, but we will be fighting for their safety" General Silverhoof said placing a hoof on the back of each of them. They all then looked up to see the approaching Griffon army."Any last words".
"I think you should have the honour General" Autumn said.
"Very well, Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori" he spoke softly.
"What does that mean" Sparklash asked.
"It's the old lie that was told to all the cadets in the old day. It is noble and honourable to die for one's country" he said with a smile on his face."CHARGE" he shouted and the three ponies ran towards the oncoming army.
General Silverhoof hit the final mound with a thud. The Griffon's had pushed them back a lot quicker then he had anticipated. Looking back Silverhoof thought "We probably could of survived if we had ran". As the Griffon army surrounded the three soldiers of Equestria General Silverhoof turned and looked at both his companions."Will you follow me, one last time" he said to them.
"To Tartarus" Sparklash said.
"And back" Autumn said.
The three ponies charged at the army knowing this would be their last stand. Just as Silverhoof lifted his sword to strike a griffon, it was hit by an arrow.
