Chapter 3: Flim and Flam

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Connor and Dave could not be more depressed. Well, they weren't really depressed, but they felt depressed. Let's put it that way. Realization hit them like a freight train. They were sad, very, very sad. But when your best friend is a first-class idiot, things can take a quick turn. Having finally reached the town they were headed for, they looked around and realized that this town was very colorful, just like its inhabitants. They were confused, confused about the people that lived here. What was wrong with them? Their skin was either purple, orange, green, white, or even pink! Freaking pink!

Trying to ignore the strange people, they walked through the crowded streets of the town.

"I swear to god, there is something very wrong with this place." Dave said, taking quick glances at several people that walked passed them. "Right dude?" He asked as he looked at Connor.

"Yeah." Connor replied as he looked at his feet. "When I asked people in what state we are, they just looked at me funny and walked away." He said as he looked at Dave. "What are we going to do?"

Dave shrugged. "I really have no idea. I guess we have to find a place to spend the night."

"Or nights. Connor added as he and Dave continued walking through the town. On the way, they came across various shops, and saw the strangest people.. Again, their freaking skin colors, man. They were about to give up and just spend the night on the streets, until Dave came up with a brilliant idea.

"No, dude! We are not robbing peope!" Connor said, crossing his arms and glaring at Dave.

"Why not?" Asked Dave, as he nudged Connor playfully. "You scared?"

"No I'm not. But robbing people is wrong!" Connor snapped at him. "It's like my mother always said: It's better to get hurt, then to hurt others." He smiled at the thought of his mother. God, did he hate himself right now. His mother and father must be so worried right now.

"Alright." Dave sighed as he closed his eyes. "Let's just go."

Connor and Dave were about to walk further into town, until they saw something in the corners of their eyes. They saw a small shop, walking towards it, they looked through the window and saw heaven on Earth.

"Is this what I think it is?" Dave asked.

"I think it is." Connor replied.

They looked at each other and smiled. "Pawn shop!" They exclaimed in union. They quickly ran into the shop and were greeted by two men; wearing some kind of tuxedo, with a black bow tie. The tuxedo's were a mixed color of vertical light blue stripes, and vertical white stripes. They wore white jeans and white shoes. One of the two men had a big, red mustache. The other had no facial hair. Their hair was a mixture of red and white.

"Welcome to the grand opening of the Flim Flam brothers--."

"Yeah, yeah." Dave interrupted the two men. "So, what do you guys sell?"

"Everything!" Said one of the men. He grabbed hold of Dave's hand and shook it roughly. "My name is Flam, welcome to our shop!"

"My name is Dave, and I would appreciate it if you could let go of my hand!" Dave replied.

Flam smiled at him and let go of his hand. "What are you looking for? A guitar? A toy clown? A toy clown playing a guitar?"

"No, we were actually looking for a place to sleep." Dave joked.

Flim and Flam started laughing, patting Dave's shoulders.

"You're a funny one!" Flim laughed, nudging his brother. "Right?"

"He sure is!" Flam laughed as he looked at Connor, only for his laughter to stop as he watched the teen walk out the store. He walked up to Connor and spun him around, making him face him directly. "What's wrong?" He asked.

"Nothing." Connection replied, looking down at his feet. "I'm good."

"I can see you're lying." Flam said as he looked at Dave. "What's wrong with your friend?"

Dave couldn't help but smirk a bit. 'Time to see how good I can act.' He thought as he looked at Flam. "Listen, we've both been through a lot. Our parents died when we were young. We've been living with our grandmother and grandfather ever since. They took care of us, and when we were old enough, offered us to work at a nearby farm. They knew the owners very well, and we worked there for a very long time. But eventually, all good things must come to an end. The owners of the farm were old, very old. They couldn't handle the pressure of maintaining their farm."

"Then what happened?" Flam asked in curiosity, munching on some popcorn he had somehow found in the shop.

"Our school wasn't really a school with a good reputation. So, our grandmother and grandfather decided we needed to attend another school. And that's how we ended up here. Everything was going good and well, until our grandmother and grandfather passed away. So, with no money and no home. We stand here before you." Dave said as he started crying.

Connor could only watch in confusion and pure shock. He made all of that up, in mere seconds? How?

"That is the saddest thing I have ever heard!" Flam cried as he hugged his brother tightly. Dave joined the hug and together they wailed and cried.

The crying continued for a minute or two. Connor said nothing, he kept shaking his head over and over again. So Dave had told them a sad story, so what? It's not like it's going to make any difference. They're still stuck in this strange world. No one knows where they are. They're finished.

Suddenly, Flim and Flam broke the hug and looked at Dave. "Stay here and don't move! They said in union." They quickly ran to the counter and started whispering to each other.

"Dude, what the hell?" Connor hissed at Dave, slapping the back of his head. "What were you thinking? Our parents aren't dead! And we're not brothers!"

"Take it easy, dude." Dave whispered to his friend, putting his arm around Connor's shoulder. "If my plan works out as I want it to, then we don't have to worry about our 'problems' anymore."

"But it's wrong! It's fucked up!" Connor retorted as he slapped Dave's arm away.

"Don't be such a pussy, dude." Dave chuckled.

"Alright."

Connor and Dave both turned their heads towards the two brothers. Flim and Flam made their way over towards the two teens, whispering and giggling to each other.

"Your story is sad." Said Flim as he looked at Flam.

"Your dreams gone with a pop." Flam said as he looked at Flim.

"But to help you out."

"We offer you job!"

Connor looked At the two brothers in confusion. "Uhm, I'm sorry but I didn't quite catch that."

Dave smacked his forehead. "Their offering us a job." He mumbled as he looked at Flim. "Right?"

Flim nodded. "Right as a basket full of apples! And we can even get you a place to sleep!"

Awesome!" Dave exclaimed as he embraced the two brothers in a hug. "When can we get started?"

"Well. "Flam said as he rubbed his chin in thought. "We'll take you upstairs, you'll be sleeping in the attic. It isn't much, but it's better than nothing. And I'm guessing you two have to go to school as well?"

Dave nodded. "Yes, sir!"

Flam smiled. "Good, then it's settled. You two will work a few hours after you come back from school, and you'll be working every Saturday!"

"Alright!" Dave beamed in excitement. "How much money do we make?"

"Well." Flim began. "There are the costs of letting you two sleep in the attic, plus transportation costs and the food you'll be eating, because we wouldn't want our new employees to starve." He said as he started counting out loud. "I think forty dollars a month will do."

"What?!" Dave shouted as he turned around, ready to leave the shop. "Well screw that! That's child abuse!"

"Dave, I don't think that's child abuse." Connor said as he followed his friend. "But it's the best we can get. I mean come on!" He exclaimed as he grabbed Dave by his shoulder, making him face him directly. "It's the best we can get."

Dave looked at his friend. Bowing his head in defeat, he sighed and looked at the two brothers. "Thank you for this amazing job, boss."

"Now to fill in some paperwork." Flim said, turning to Flam.

"No way, I did it last time!" Flam said, crossing his arms. "You fill in the papers."

"There hasn't even been a last time! We opened four days ago!" Flim retorted as he grabbed his brother by his collar. "You do it."

"No, you do it!"

"No, you do it!"

"Oh my god, just fuck already!" Dave interrupted the two brothers. "How about we don't fill in any paperwork?" Dave suggested.

The two brothers looked at each other and nodded. "You're a smart one!" Said Flim, nudging Flam. "Smart, and funny!"

"Yes." Flam replied as he put his arms around the teen's shoulders. "Now to show you your room."

"Quick question." Dave said, looking at Flam. "How many beds are up in the attic?"

"Just one." Flam replied.

"Okay." Dave replied, smiling to himself. Only for his smile to disappear seconds later. "Wait, what?!"

Connor couldn't help but laugh nervously. Sleeping in a strange world, with two people you just met. And sharing a bed with your best friend? This was not going to be fun.
