Ashes and Sackcloth

by L0rd0f7hund3r
In the wake of a terrible alien invasion, Humanity is little scattered. Roving cannibals haunt the land; disorder is global in scope. Out of this chaos emerges a new, equine, alien invader. Are they friend or foe?

In ancient Palestine, there was a Hebrew tradition of bathing in ashes and discarding ones raiment in exchange for a course woven cloths, or sackcloth.

In 2040, Earth was visited by an extraterrestrial presence. They came to conquer, sending shock troops to rid our world of the "pestilence" that was Humanity, level it's buildings, sterilize the soil, and terraform the planet to resemble their natural aerie. Humanity, outmanned, outgunned, and taken by surprise, fought back. It was a slaughter from the start…

The Enemy eventually earned a name in Human parlance, The Vultures, after their avian appearance and their penchant for consuming the dead and wounded of their enemies. Their technological superiority against Humanity was only matched by the ferocity of their soldiers. The Vultures were of one mind, one purpose.

Their absolute hegemony structure proved their undoing. After nearly fifty years of fighting, a brave and suicidal plan was formed. Two of humanity's most cunning soldiers stole an enemy war craft, retrofitted Earth's most powerful thermonuclear weapon within it's hold, and flew that war craft into the very heart of the enemy pride ship. The brave soldiers sacrificed themselves for the whole of the world by detonating that nuclear device in the heart of the enemy stronghold. None of the Vultures on-board or planet side survived…

It has been five years since The Big Hit. Humanity struggles as it tries to recover from decades of war. Food shortages are common, roaming teams of cannibals, known as The Reavers, terrorize the remaining populace. In the chaos and bedlam of the repairs, a lone soldier named Juno seeks out the truth of widely spreading rumor; that a new alien species has come to Earth, as much a victim as humanity was to The Vultures.

Can humanity levee trust again after so throughly getting trounced? Are the ponies as benevolent as they seem? Juno has come to answer those questions.
