Ever since I was a little Colt, I have always wanted to be a part of the royal guard, there was something about helping and protecting people that just called to me, despite the fact that my Dad obliged at first, especially after seven failed tryouts for the guard, but they soon realized I had potential after I finally passed my eighth tryout, and pretty soon after that I packed my bags and my Dad soon dropped me off at royal guard academy
"Take care of melody and colt for me, dad"
"I'll try, sport, but... things haven't been exactly easy for us since mom left."
"I know."
"It had been over years since mom left us, around the same time that I started my impossible dream of being a member of the royal guard, I always thought that mom left us because of me, but I still was committed to the guard even after that, guess I always held out hope that she will one day realize her mistake and come back, but I soon realized that was even more impossible than any of my other dreams.
Soon after Dad dropped me off at the academy I was soon greeted by a rather had some looking pony with a blond mane and tail and was wearing a suit for no reason
"Fancy seeing a pony like u here, don't you belong with a punk band or something."
"Are you talking about my mane, Blueblood just because my hair is blue and spiky does not mean i belong with a generic punk band I've wanted this since I was little and I am not gonna let an uppercrust jerk like you ruin it"
"You won't last a day here"
I then shot back "if I wouldn't survive here then why am I here in the first place"
"...just so you know your sense of humor has a much shorter life expectancy"
"I wouldn't trust a thing he mouth off about, gent every time some bloke asks ol' Tia why she still put up with her she's always like 'who says I put up with him all the time' said a royal blue unicorn with a navy blue mane, he also spoke in an accent I couldn't place, trottinghamite, maybe "Names Thunderlane, by the way, and you are..."
"Uhh... Flash, Flash Sentry, are you from trottingham by any chance"

"We should probably be heading over to dorm" he said to me as he handed my class and bunk assignments written on a piece of paper
"Uh, thanks but I don't really think I need this"
"Maybe you do maybe you don't, someone needs to be there to help you"

We then entered our dorm room and promptly went to unpacking our stuff, after a while I guess Thunderlane noticed i was beings get to notice that I was being really quiet
"What's eating ya bloke?"
"Thunderlane you may not realize this, but I was totally Invisible as a fool everyone just insulted me and said that I was useless, nopony ever liked me outside of my family, and I had no friends everybody just hated me just cause, I went here to protect people and make a difference"
"So nopony looked you because you existed"
"They called me 'Mr. Nothing' "
"Well I don't think it's ethical for some bloke to hate another bloke just cause you don't know him."

After me and Thunderlane unpacked our stuff we were told by our dorm master to go to our classes (or sessions if you are really anal) lustily for merge classes are basically just 3 sessions, General Fitness, History and Cultures and Combat
"I was expecting them to overcomplicate it like they do in In Tia's magic school"
"Didn't we all, Thor"
Yes I just called Thunderlane Thor, a lot of people call him Thor, he's cool with it now so shut up
"So who do we have for "general fitness"
"Some Bloke named Jim Whistle"
"Wait is that supposed to be a joke?"
"No it is not" said a pony I assumed was Jim Whistle, he had a light-coffee coat with slick grey mane and tail with the former styled in a crew cut and his muzzle was wrinkled just enough that he could not look dougheyed and cutesy no matter what expression he had on his face also he had a cutie mark of none other than, a whistle on his flank (we're you expecting puppies?) "and I would prefer if you called me 'Coach' Whistle and don't be surprised I bet half of you people aware named after some random guardsman's spread or something
"My name is Megan" piped up a pale white unicorn with blond hair, what a mare was doing in Royal guard academy you may ask actually there have been more than one pony might think.
"Well that was a bad example, but still there a lot of weirdos here so get used to it"
"What's his problem"
Thor just shrugged
"All right you ponies, I am going to assign you your partners for the rest of the year"
"Wow this IS like my middle school gym class"
"Shut up" Coach whistle then brought out a jar filled with wood bits with my classes' cutie marks (that is the least manly term in the equestrian language) on them "I will pull out your cutie marks from this jar to come up with your partners for the rest of the year, be happy with your choices cause I just said "cutie mark" way more than one needed to" be then promptly started to pull the wood bits out of his jar unfortunately, me and Thor didn't end up as partners like he hoped "Blankspace, you get Megan" he said pointing to me
"Did coach seriously just call you Blankspace?"
"Yes, Megan a lot of people call me Blankspace people also call me Mr. Nothing get used to it"
"...You can't just stand for something like that, Flash, how can you ever hope to stand up and protect people if you can't protect yourself"
"Trust me Megan I learned a long time ago not to talk back to anyone that teaches Gym, besides that was a little too sentimental"
"Thing is, it took me a long time to get here in the first place, I'm not gonna quit on my first day and I am not about to let anyone do the same, at least your parents know your here"
"Your parents don't know how your here"
"When I first wanted to be a royal guardsman (or gaurdwoman in this case) I was under intense scrutiny from everyone including my family, they aren't even letting me be here, so I jumped out the window, and they haven't seen me since, I feel really bad about it, but they should not crush their child's dream so uncaringly"
"You didn't put much thought into it"
"I know I didn't, but honestly Coach can be a really great person, he's the only one here who treats me as an equal, just remind him of his folly from time to time, even he knows he makes mistakes from time to time"
"I'm gonna fight my battles one at a time here" I said pointing to the pole Whistle had assigned to us
"You're fun"
That conversation with Megan made me realize my problems are completely minuscule compared to her's from what I could gather at the present moment she won give everything about herself to be seen as an equal to her male peers, I liked that about her
"Hey Blankspace, Put your back into it!" Coach whistle yelled at me from across the room
"Stop calling me that coach!"
"Did you just sass me"
