A faint sound of scribbling on paper came from a dark corner of a lonely crystal room, in a lonely crystal castle. In the dark corner laid a young drake, a drake who was drowning his sorrows through the written word. It was his way of venting frustration for his dearest Rarity.
"Rarity..."
The scribbling of paper dulled to a stop, and a mournful whimper escaped Spike's mouth. After a moment of sniffling and pondering on what to write next, he continued to grace the paper with his quill.
I love you Rarity, so much so that it burns me that you don't return my feelings. I do everything in my power to please you; help you with your errands, your chores, and whatever else you need to make you feel content. Yet you give me no gratitude, other than a teasing peck on the cheek from time to time. I feel like I'm stuck in an endless limbo, a limbo filled with work and no reward...
Spike let a drawn out sigh escape his lips.
How many of these have I written now? It feels like forever ago that I have been writing to myself as a conduit for my anguish. It's not like I can tell any of my close friends or family about my pain. They never seem to understand the agony I am tormented with everyday; Always playing my liking for Rarity as some insignificant crush.
To Spike, it is more than just a crush. It is love, love that is blocked by a barrier, the barrier Rarity and her friends use to block out his feelings. Even his so called sister, Twilight, is guilty of using that very same blockade.
Of all the ponies who should understand me, Twilight is the one you would think understands me the most. No, it turns out it is quite the opposite, she disapproves of it more than anypony else. Always telling me it’s just a silly childhood crush, or that I need to move on to more important things.
Twilight was too overbearing to Spike, but Spike loves her. That’s why it hurts the most hearing this from her.
The noise of the quill on paper dulled to a stop, replaced by the sound of sobs. Tears were streaming down Spike's face, turning his eyes a darkish pink.
Spike whispered to himself, "Why does nopony understand, Why am I always being pushed around, and why can't I escape this growing pain inside me?"
Spike slammed his fist against the floor next to him, making a echoing sound throughout the room. Suddenly, a knock came from his room's door, startling him back to reality. A tired feminine voice came from the other side of the imposing crystal door.
The voice asked, "Spike, you alright? I heard a loud bang and sobs coming from in there."
A moment of agonizing silence came after Twilight’s question; Spike had no idea what to say, he was cornered like a wolf's prey in the heat of the hunt. The door clicked open before Spike could protest her entering his room.. Peeking her head through the doorway, Twilight was startled by what she saw before her. In front of her was a red eyed little dragon, who was surrounded by scraps of paper, and a singular candle.
Twilight cried out his name, galloping over to him, not wavering even the slightest.
"Go away... please." A sniffle escaped his lips as he said that.
Twilight stopped in her tracks. "Spike..." She said in a low tone.
She looked at the papers scattered about, and wondered what they were there for. Levitating them to her, she took a moment to scan them over, her horn growing dimmer and dimmer the more she went through them. A couple of tears slipped past her eyes, and fell to the cold crystal floor below.
Dropping the papers, she approached Spike, and gave him a tight, warm, and loving hug.
"Spike..." She repeated herself. "I do care. I care for you so much, like any good sister should... Why didn’t you tell me this was eating you up so much inside, I would have listened, I would have helped you, I wou-"
She stopped to hug him even tighter, Spike hugged her back with just as much care.
Spike poured out with pain in his voice, "You just never seemed to understand, none of you did. You always pushed it aside like it meant nothing to me… I had no one who I could really talk to, I just wanted a shoulder to vent my sorrow onto..."
"Spike..." Twilight began. "About Rarity. Yes, she doesn’t share your feelings, but there are a couple reasons why. One reason being that you're still just a kid. A very polite and mature kid, but a kid all the same. Rarity, she's a full grown mare. Spike you got to understand the obscenity of this situation."
Spike pulled away from her hug. "But... I love her. Why must it be this way? It's just not fair."
Twilight pulled herself to him again, letting him cry onto her shoulder. "I know, I know. Life is unfair sometimes, but trust me when I say this Spike. You will find someone who you can love, and they will love you just as much back, I Pinkie promise.
Twilight let go of her grasp around the drake, and did the motions of the Pinkie promise.
Spike was wide eyed, unsure of what to think. “I-I… I guess... I guess that makes some sense... but it just hurts so much..."
Twilight embraced him again and said, “Yes, I know it does, but I’ll be here for you Spike, always.”
“Thank you… I love you, Twilight.”
“I love you too. I think it’s about time we got some shut eye. It's been a long day, hasn’t it?"
Spike replied, "yeah…”
Twilight let go of her embrace around him, and began to trot to the door, waving her hoof goodbye.
"Twilight! wait..." Spiked stopped her in her tracks. " If you don’t mind… could you stay here with me for the night, I would appreciate it greatly.”
Twilight then shut the partially open crystal door and replied to him, “Of course I can, Spike.”
She trotted her way to his bed, and climbed into it, leaving a space open for spike to lie. Spike accepted the offer, and climbed in next to her. They cuddled up next to each other, sharing a tender moment together.
“Goodnight Spike, love you.”
“Goodnight Twilight, love you too.”
With that, the candle in the room went out, and the two soon found peace in the Sandmare's spell, their bodies warmth seeping into each other as they slept together.
