When hard times fall on Sweet Apple Acres, Big Mac finds himself competing in the oldest and most prodigious competition in all of Equestria, the Iron Stallion Competition, which is personally sponsored and hosted by Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, in order to win the first place prize money.

When he stands victorious, he later receives a mysterious letter from the Princesses themselves, personally inviting him to the Palace for an audience with both of them, and he eagerly accepts. But what the poor farm stallion doesn't realize is that he will soon partake in one of the Princesses's most closely guarded secrets, The Nights of the Champion, rooted deep in the origins of the Iron Stallion Competition.
