Chapters (Original Assistant )
The Assistant has had a long life. He has made mistakes, but one stands above them all. A certain deal to protect his mind. A deal with a demon...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It has been a pretty busy day for me. I was constantly being pulled across Ponyville to assist the ponies. They seemed busier than usual and needed more help. It was nothing I couldn’t handle. Just move this or carry this, they didn’t have too many complicated jobs. The day was nearing its end with my final job at Sugar Cube Corner. I began my walk from a couple houses down after helping Derpy with her damages to her house. She seemed to have trouble aiming for the door when she tries to land.
As I open the double doors, I notice the darkness inside. I sigh as I know what’s about to happen.
“SURPRISE!!”
A group of ponies jumped up from behind tables and chairs with hats and a couple with party whistles. They were most of the ponies I knew including all six of the Elements of Harmony. The room was decorated with streamers and confetti. A party. I acted along with the surprise.
“Whoa! What’s this!?”
“Your party silly!” Pinkie answered jumping over the counter.
“A party? For what?”
“Don’t you remember? It is one year since you came to Ponyville, and since you haven’t told us your birthday, I thought this could replace it!”
I chuckle and smile at the ecstatic party pony. I can’t believe it has been a year. After being alive for so long, it’s hard to tell the difference between a year and a day.
“Thanks Pinkie. You’re always a good friend!”
Pinkie attacked me with a hug. I caught her and returned the favor.
“You’re welcome! Now…” She hopped off and looked back to everyone. “LEEEETS PARTY!!”
It started out as a usual party. Pinkie bounced around making sure every guest was having a good time. As I stood near the side of the party, all the ponies came over to congratulate me on the year here and give me a hoof shake or hug. I accepted all their congrats and gestures.
I stood for a little while until I was approached by a group of fillies. The main ones I recognized were the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
“Hey Assistant!” Scootaloo shouted excitedly. “Could you tell us a story of one of your adventures!?”
I chuckle at how excited she was and how all of them wore a begging expression.
“Sure!”
All of them jumped up with a small cheer and surrounded me. I sat with them in a comforting pose. I thought of an appropriate story to tell. One instantly caught my mind.
“So there I was, on planet Galtek. I was sent to keep a man name Dante from dying. He was going to be a great warrior, but he needed help to get started. ”
“How should we approach this?”
I remember back to the time with Dante. We were just outside the cave of a bothering monster.
“We should draw him out so we have more room to fight it.”
Dante nodded and looked to the ground. He scanned until he found the perfect rock to throw. With haste, he picked it up and threw it into the cave as far as he could. It took a while until it finally connected with something. The sound was like a thick ‘Thump’ against something hard.
A large roar emitted from the caves entrance. Dante looked over to me just as I turned to him.
“What now?” He asked me.
Just as I begin to answer, a large boulder flies out of the cave and flies past us. It crashed and knocks over a couple trees. I continue to stare a Dante who focused on the rock. He looked back to me with huge shocked eyes.
“Now we fight.”
Just as I say that, the monster walks out of the cave. ..
“It was an ugly thing. Something only a mother could love!”
The foals laugh as I come back to the story.
“Anyway, me and Dante were shocked by the size of the creature. It stood about the height of an Ursa Minor. It had four arms, three legs, and a single ugly head.”
“What happened to you and Dante” One of the fillies asks.
“Right. Well, Dante withdrew his sword as I backed away to give him room. The monster focused on me while Dante was getting ready to jump it…”
As I finished the story, my head began to ring.
“Huh!?”
I look around the room. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary for a Pinkie party. I had a bad feeling about this. The ringing didn’t last long. It stopped after I was approached by my six friends.
“Howdy Assistant!” Applejack started.
“Are you feeling okay?” Fluttershy asked.
“Huh? What makes you say that?” I answer.
“Well, you were looking a little worried for a second there.” Rainbow said flying over the others.
“Oh. That was nothing. Just… looking around the party!”
“Well, just remember, whatever is troubling you, we can help.” Rarity stated.
“I’ll remember that. Thanks.”
“So are you enjoying the party!?” Pinkie asked in her usual tone of happiness.
“Yes! I love the party! Thanks Pinkie. I really needed this.”
She smiled wider as I smiled. Twilight seemed to be just looking over me. She had a hoof on her chin as she looked over my body.
“Is something wrong Twilight?”
“Huh?” Twilight said looking back up to my eyes. “Oh! No, just… something. It’s not important.”
“Okay…”
The six walk back into the party crowd and begin to socialize. I notice that Twilight still kept an eye on me as I continue another story for the foals.
The party lasted a while. Ponies talking, dancing, eating, and playing games. I was truly happy with them. Even though I haven’t given them a birthdate, they still want to throw a party for me. They made me feel great nearly twenty-four seven. I just hope nothing ever ruins that.
The party was finally coming to a close. The food was mostly gone, the ponies were leaving, and it was getting late. Twilight and I were about ready to head out, but I needed to thank Pinkie first. She was busy taking down decorations and clearing tables.
“Thanks for the party Pinkie! It was really fun!”
She stopped putting plates in a bag and looked over to me. She wore a large smile across her face.
“It wasn’t a problem Assistant! I love throwing parties!”
“Do you want any help before I go?”
She laughed a little at that.
“You shouldn’t help clean up your own party silly!”
I laugh with her.
“I guess you’re right. Well, see you tomorrow Pinkie!”
“You too Assistant!”
Twilight and I were walking through the small light of the moon back to the library. Twilight seemed to be looking at me really suspiciously.
“Is there a problem Twilight?”
She blinked to regain her focus and looked up to me.
“Huh!? Oh, it’s just…”
She paused.
“Yes?”
She tilted her head and looked my body over like before.
“Something feels… different about you.”
“What do you mean?”
“You are emitting some sort of… weird magic.”
My eyes grew in shock at what she said.
“What!? When!?”
She changed her focus to the library in the distance.
“Back at the party. When you were telling the story... your left hand… It… I can’t explain it that well. It sort of... pulsed a red energy.”
I become confused. I stare up to the sky to think.
“Why would I pulse a red energy? How would I even do that? Could it be…”
My thoughts escape me as notice we arrive at the library. Twilight walks in and I follow behind. The giant room of books was a drastic change from the confetti covered bakery.
“I’ll figure out what caused the red energy. You just go to your studies or sleep.”
She went over to a pile of books on the table as I started up the stairs.
“Yeah, sleep.”
I chuckle. She would always choose studying over anything.
I stepped out to the balcony. It looked the same as always. I walked to the edge. Ponyville was winding down. The ponies were heading into their homes and closing their shops. I can’t believe I have seen this same sight almost every night for a year. I fling back my trench coat and sit on the wooden deck. I cross my legs and begin my meditation.
The night was as peaceful as ever. Luna always impressed me with her nights. I swear she made them just for me. But even with such a beautiful night, something was distracting me. I tried to clear my mind, but every time my mind went black, it was interrupted by a red flash. Something was happening to me, and I was afraid of the results.
I gave up on meditating. I just stared at the sky the entire night. The stars and moon complimented each with a beautiful glow. I needed to do something to pass the time. I needed to walk.
The roads were empty and the lights were out. The moon was my only source of light. It seemed to shine brighter as I walked. I felt as though I was being watched.
I reached the end of town. A long road leads into the forest from the edge of town. I was told it is bad to go there at night. I wanted to turn back, but something was drawing me towards it. I entered through the only visible entrance.
The forest was dark. I could not see a thing, but I somehow was able to maneuver through the trees. The further I got into the forest, the more numb my body felt. I had no control over where I was going. Just as the last of the light escaped my eyes, a flash of red entered in.
As the red light began to dim, Luna was standing in front of me. We were in the middle of what looked to be a small clearing in the middle of the woods. My eyes were focused entirely on Luna, and I couldn’t move. She had a look of fear and confusion.
“Assistant?”
I tried to move my mouth, but I couldn’t move.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
I couldn’t understand what she was saying.
“What is wrong with your eyes?”
Her words confused me and I began to feel worried. I feel a strange feeling in my back and Luna began to scream. I saw a large black appendage reach out towards her. She attempted to fly away, but the arm grabbed her before she could. It grabbed her by the neck and pulled her towards me. She was now to petrified to scream. I tried to move, but to no avail. She was now a few feet from my face. Another appendage appeared from behind my vision and grabbed her from another side. Luna was struggling to break from the large arms. She was looking me in the eye with a look of absolute terror. I wanted to scream and tell her this is not of my doing.
Her face began to show she was in agonizing pain. I was terrified of what was happening. I could only watch as Luna was being strangled in front of me. She let out a last gasp of breath as the appendages pulled her in half. Blood and guts were being spread over the ground in front of me. I was beyond terrified and in tremendous shock. I tried to yell, but my mouth refused to cooperate. Just then, my head looked down at the dead remains of the once great princess. Her body was torn straight down the middle, head to flank. Her blood and organs were spread in the middle of her halves. I then noticed where I was looking. The blood seemed to reflect my face. A wide smile was on my face and my eyes were spread wide. My eyes… they were completely red. Everything suddenly went black and I began to feel my body again.
My eyes shot open and I was breathing heavily. I was staring at the night sky above. I shot up to see where I was. I was lying on the balcony of the library. A dream… a terrible dream.
“Are you okay Assistant?”
I turned to see Twilight looking out the doors. She wore a worried expression.
“I’m fine. Just had a bad dream.”
She lost her worried expression for one of questioning.
“You were sleeping?”
I look up to the moon. Luckily I see it is still in motion. Luna was okay.
“I guess I was.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a terrible night. My mind was assaulted by constant images of the defiled Luna and that sick grin. I could not meditate with the image flashing every minute. I just stared at the sky in constant thought. It has been a while since I could stop and think about stuff.
“You can come out now Twilight.”
I hear a small gasp from the purple unicorn. She was standing in the balcony doorway watching me. She thought I couldn’t tell.
“Are you okay?” She asks.
“I’m… fine.”
I hear her step towards me slowly. Her hoofs making small clops with every step.
“Are you sure?”
I don’t respond
She finally makes it to my side. I kept my eyes on the sky. Any sign of trouble from the moon or stars would make me rush to the castle. Twilight joined me, but still with a little concern.
“Why are you staring at the night sky?”
“……… reasons.”
She slams her hoof on the deck. I look over a little to see her looking at me with a stern look. I quickly look back to the sky.
“Assistant!”
I look for a few more seconds before turning my attention to Twilight. She still had the same stern look.
“You never say anything when I ask questions!”
She looks me in the eye with the same look. I can see in her eyes that there is only one way to stop it. I breathe in deeply before turning fully towards her.
“Okay…. Ask away.”
She loses her stern look and looks a little confused.
“What do you mean?”
I close my eyes and bend my head down.
“Ask me anything and I will answer it for you.”
I open my eyes and look at her. She now looks very happy. If there is one thing I learned about Twilight over the time I spent with her, it’s that she loves to get answers.
“Really!?” She asks with very bright eyes.
I smile a little at her joy.
“Yes. But there might be ones I can’t answer yet.”
She began to clap her front hooves together.
“Hooray! Hold on!”
She jumped up and ran into the library. She quickly came back out with a quill, ink, and a scroll floating ahead of her. She places the ink down and had the quill and scroll positioned in front of her. I chuckle a little at the enthusiasm shown in her face.
“Okay, let’s start simple. How old are you?”
“Well, I am about one thousand, sixty-one in my years which are the same as yours.”
She quickly scribbles down on her scroll.
“Okay, now how do you use your magic?”
“Oh that’s simple. I was granted the ability to pick up many abilities when I started, and over time, I learned many tricks senses, and skills.”
“Oh, that’s neat!”
She continues her writing.
“Now, how do you know when a problem is happening in a different dimension?”
“Ah, now that is also a skill I got over time. I got it about 130 years after I started doing this.”
“Okay.”
She dips the quill in the ink and continues.
“What are some other senses you have?”
That one was a tough one. I have so many that it could take days to say them all with some description.
“Well, I have the main five which most living things have, but I also have advanced versions of those along with multiple senses of danger, distrust, lying, and loads more.”
She looked up from her scroll. She looked disappointed by that answer.
“Is that it? What about that book?”
I exhale deeply before making a move. I slowly reach for my left chest pocket and flick it open. I reach in and pull out a small worn book with a large symbol on the front. To her, it was a symbol that looked like a square with one side missing and a big x in the middle. She looked at the book with small amazement. She lowered her quill and scroll down a little. She began to reach out to it with her hoof. I quickly pulled it back.
“Sorry, no touching.”
“What!? Why!?”
“It has an effect when someone or something touches it. It would flood your mind with everything it’s seen, and trust me, that’s bad.”
“Oh. But what does it look like inside?”
I bring it back to me and flick to the first page. I hold it out to show her. She looks at the page a while. She tilts her head and squints her eyes but she still can’t make it out.
“All I see are small scribbles.”
“Those are all the things I have learned and have seen in text. Almost a thousand years of knowledge compressed onto a single page!”
“Whoa! But how did you write all that in the book?”
“It writes itself as I travel! Pretty convenient.”
She looked even more amazed at that. She tried again to reach out to touch it, but I quickly pull it back.
“Ah! Like I said, it would most likely destroy your mind.”
I put it back into my pocket.
“How do you know? How come only you can handle all that information?”
I look over to her once I got the button back into place.
“Well I learned all these things slowly and over time, but this book would instantly zap your mind with all that knowledge in a second! It could overwhelm you.”
“Oh…”
She slowly picks up her quill and scroll and writes down some more.
“I think I will answer one more question for you Twilight.”
She stopped writing and looked up.
“Aw! But I have so many more!”
I wave my hand at her.
“I know, I know, but the more questions I answer, the more you’ll have.”
“Well, okay.”
She looked down at the scroll and thought for a minute. Finally, she looked back up to me.
“Do you know why your hand pulsed a red energy?”
Her question was a shock to me. I would have thought she would have forgotten about that. I tried my best to keep a straight face.
“…….. No.”
She stopped and looked up.
“You don’t know why?”
“Nope. Must have been some sort of energy disperse or something.”
She looked at me a little disappointed about my answer.
“Well, it’s getting late Twilight and you need your sleep.”
She rolled up the scroll with her magic and picked up the ink.
“You’re right.”
She lets out a large yawn followed with a small exhale.
“Time to get some sleep! Goodnight Assistant! And thanks for answering some of my questions!” She says with a large smile.
I smile back in return.
“You’re welcome! Now go on.”
She slowly walked in and closed the door behind her. I made sure she was out of sight before I turned back to the edge of the balcony. I looked back up to the sky and continued my night. All I could think was how I lied to Twilight. All I have to do now is hope. Hope nothing bad happens. Hope that nothing goes wrong.
Hope….
