A.K. Yearling was sitting in her cabin with her quill in her mouth. She was writing her latest book.
"And as the spiders scurried around Daring Do, the evil laugh of her enemies could be heard from above. They thought that she was hopeless in that pit of poison spiders, but Daring Do was everything but hopeless." Yearling mumbled through her mouthful of quill.
Yearling smiled as she dropped the quill down. After writing half of her book since morning time, it was time she took a break.
"I wonder what's on the menu for Daring Do today." Yearling said as she went to the kitchen and opened up a cabinet, eyeing its contents, "Let's see…there's peanut butter, crackers, hay, apples…I guess a apple will do." Yearling said.
Just then, a noise caused Yearling to pause entirely. It sounded like something had made a grumbling noise, as if whatever it was had been irritated.
"Hmm…must of been my stomach." Yearling chuckled as she wrapped the apple around her hoof and placed it on the kitchen table.
Yearling then sat in a chair and took a bite out of the apple. She munched on it and savored the taste.
"You don't deserve AN apple." a voice spoke from behind her.
Yearling paused in fear, scared to see what was behind her. Somepony seemed to have broken in without her knowing! She then slowly turned around with bits of her apple around her muzzle. She sighed in relief only to find a small filly.
"Oh, thank goodness…I thought you were a threat!" Yearling laughed as she wiped away the apple bits with her hoof.
"Ugh, you uphold ageism standards AND you're a bad writer? Then again…I think it's more of a heightism standard since I'm also short…or is it perhaps both?" The filly questioned.
"Uh, excuse me?" Yearling said as got up from where she was sitting and placed all four of her hooves on the ground.
"Don't pretend that you don't know what I'm here for. I believe it is completely obvious." The filly spoke as she frowned and squinted her eyes at Yearling.
"That's the thing. I really have no idea what you're here for, or how you even got here." Yearling said in a confused tone.
"No idea, huh? That makes sense…well, coming from you, at least. Sit back down, cause it seems I'll have to explain a thing or two to that small mind of yours." The filly said as she pulled up a chair and sat at the table."
"Well, you're quite the nice guest. Far nicer then most of the other guests I've had here." Yearling said as she sat down at the table, "So…what's up?"
"THIS is what's up." The filly spoke as she grabbed a book from a satchel she was carrying and placed it on the table.
Yearling looked at the title. It was her own book!
"Daring Do and the Atrocity of Appeloosa! I take it that you must enjoy my books? Or…I guess tolerate would be a better choice of words by the way you've treated me." Yearling said.
"Tolerate? I used to love these! My father read them every night to me. When I got old enough to read, I read them everywhere I went! The school grounds, at home, and at my friend's house!" The filly said with a cheerful attitude.
"Well, that's very sweet to hear," Yearling smiled. "But…why did you say I have a small mind?"
"Oh! Well let's just open this up and see for ourselves, shall we?!" The filly growled as she frantically grabbed the book and started turning the pages rapidly, "Read this out loud to me, and tell me what's wrong!!!"
"Okay," Yearling said as she cleared her throat and read aloud. "The black smoke from the train was shooting out of its funnel as it sped toward Daring Do. She struggled from the ropes that were tied around her. She looked around and eyed at a apple, and she smiled in relief. She then grabbed the apple with her mouth and threw it at the lane changer, causing the train to miss her and to speed off into another direction at the very last second. She was saved!"
Yearling paused, and looked at the book in confusion.
"WANNA KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS?!" The filly shouted.
"Uh…what is the problem?" Yearling questioned.
"THIS STUPID PIECE OF IGNORANCE I SPOTTED RIGHT HERE!!!" The filly shouted as she placed her hoof between the words "a" and "apple".
Yearling studied the two words carefully. She didn't see anything wrong. The spelling of the two words were right, and there wasn't a coma or a period in between them that would make the sentence become improper and confusing.
"What is the matter?" She questioned.
"ARE YOU SERIOUS?!! YOU'RE KIDDING ME, RIGHT?! OKAY, NOW I'M TICKED!!" The filly yelled as she slammed the book shut in front of Yearling's face.
"Did I offend you or something about the apple? Did I not describe it well enough? Or did you want it to be a pear instead…?" Yearling asked.
"I don't know how in Equestria you became an author! Did you hear that? I said AN author. Notice the "an" I put after author!! Now apply that to AN apple!" The filly snapped.
Yearling paused for a second while staring at the enraged filly, and then chuckled a little.
"Ah, I gotcha now. I should of said "an apple" instead of "a apple"! Hehe, sorry about that. I was really into that part while I was writing it, so I was bound to make a mistake, and turns out, I did! Thanks for pointing that out, kid," Yearling said as she nudged the filly toward the door. "Well, it was nice seeing ya, but I think you should head home now."
"I'm not leaving just yet till I let you know what's on my mind," the filly spoke. "You made a common error, and that's one thing a great author shouldn't do! THEY SHOULDN'T SAY "A APPLE"!!! THEY SHOULD SAY "AN APPLE"!!! I PUT MY TRUST INTO YOU, AND YOU COULDN'T EVEN SAY "AN" AFTER A NOUN THAT BEGINS WITH A VOWEL!! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU SO MUCH!!"
"Look, kid. Authors make mistakes. We learn by them. You know you do realize you could of just sent me a letter telling me about this? It beats having to travel so far to my home and ranting about it." Yearling said.
"You ruined my childhood with that ignorant garbage. You trashed my heart. You're the reason why little colts and fillies are drinking hard cider! You are an abomination. AN ABOMINATION!!!!" The filly screamed as Yearling finally pushed her out the door.
"What's your name, kid? I want to know so I won't have to bump into you ever again." Yearling demanded.
"Your worst nightmare!!" The filly screamed.
"Diamond Tiara! What is taking you so long?! And why are you shouting at A.K. Yearling?" A well dressed pony spoke up as he trotted toward them.
"Go back to the carriage, daddy! I told you to wait there while I was…asking for an autograph!" Diamond Tiara said.
"You want an autograph?! Here's your stinking autograph!" Yearling yelled as she grabbed Diamond Tiara's copy of the book and starting scribbling the word "an" over and over again.
"Hey! You can't do that to my daughter's book! Do you know who I am? I'm Filthy Rich! The richest pony in Ponyville! I can sue your non-existing pants off!" Diamond Tiara's dad shouted.
"Why don't I just sue your daughter?! Cause I'm pretty sure harassment is illegal!" Yearling shouted as she closed the book and threw it onto the ground and closed her door in front of them.
Yearling huffed in exhaustion. She then leaned her ear close to the door. The sound of two ponies' hoofsteps could be heard trotting off in the distance. It seemed that they didn't want to deal with her.
"Yes! I'm off the hook. Whew, and I was scared there for a second," Yearling sighed as she went back into the kitchen. "It seems like these days that someponies just get mad at the smallest of details."
