To Donut Joe, a peaceful morning in Ponyville was an oddity. It wasn't the aspect of being used to chaos that made him feel so; even with the very spirit of Chaos living within the town limits, Discord certainly kept to his own ends usually. For Joe, a peaceful morning belied one of two prospects. The first and more common event is a calm before a storm of events. He could recall just last week waking up to a similar morning, only for the town to be flipped out of whack due to everypony's clocks being changed to dissimilar times. The three cutie-mark seeking culprits alleged they were only trying to earn their marks as timekeepers, though they clearly misunderstood the purpose of the word.
In lieu of the first event, was a less common but equally undesired occurrence; Joe waking up without his marefriend, Pinkie Pie, beside him.
Having been dating for several months now, the mare had become a permanent fixture of his life. The times they spent together each carried a treasured memory in his mind, whether it was spent in leisure at home, watching a movie with a giant bucket of popcorn between them, or out and about at the local lake to escape the heat waves of summer. Joe wasn't much for swimming, granted, but the benefit of seeing his lovely marefriend in a two-piece bikini would have made any wary stallion a beach fanatic in seconds.
“She must've gone off to the castle again.” Joe murmured as he extracted himself out of bed. Monday was always such a troublesome day; the start of the working week was a grind for any soul of labor, and even working in a diner like his would still be heinously laborious. The past weekend had seen many a customer come by, craving the delicious sugary and creamy treats his business offered. Much of his success of late came from a brilliant spin on concept of a Popsicle treat. With an abundance of fruits left over from lack of use, Pinkie had the idea of making them into a type of frozen dessert for the summer. Add in Joe's idea of using yogurt to stabilize the creation as well as give it an additional zing, and they were reaping in the bits.
Joe loved that aspect of his marefriend: creativity flowed from her as much as the energy she exhibited every day. He admired her thought process and felt that if given the chance, Pinkie could be her own proverbial think tank for chefs everywhere if she wasn't busy as the Element of Happiness. On occasion, Joe sometimes felt disbelief that he'd had the fortune of being her special somepony. It was almost like a dream, the way she would smile at him, pink curls framing her face as her bright baby blues would gaze up at him. Joe had lost himself in those eyes on many an occasion, in the bedroom as much as in public.
Shaking his head in the shower, Joe chuckled at his thoughts. He was totally enamored with the mare for certain. It made him miss her all the more that morning, but he'd made it clear to her that her role as an Element shouldn't be neglected for his behalf. She was a key part of a magic that he could scarcely comprehend, but he did his best to not let it intimidate him. Pinkie wouldn't want to be treated like a queen or some noble like he'd left behind in Canterlot; she just wanted to be a fun-loving mare, and he supported that ideal entirely.
With the day's prep done and himself cleaned and fed, Donut Joe left his apartment to head out to his calling and business. The diner was as solid a fixture in the town as ever. With the name “Donut Joe's Donut Shack” displayed prominently in pink and blue across the wide headboard, the white-painted building had become a solid locale for all to enjoy. There had been enough success that Joe was looking to expand the building further, to add room for more customers as well as storage space for goods. Many days had come close this past summer to leaving him with little stock to use for the next. If not for Pinkie's aid and some help from Sugarcube Corner, he would have had many a rough day and many an unappeased customer.
What Joe did not expect to find at his front door was Pinkie Pie leaning against the front door, looking at the ground as she held her hands behind her back. When he approached her, her eyes looked up and her smile beamed as Pinkie leapt to him.
“There you are, Joe! Such a sleepy head!” she exclaimed when she reached him, embracing him with both arms around his back.
Joe let himself be momentarily distracted by the two squishy pillows pressed into his chest before remembering to return her hug. The close proximity let him nuzzle her mane, the pink bouncing curls soft against his cheek before he pulled away. “I can't help it if somepony takes all the energy of the day with her wherever she goes.” he joked. “I was wondering where you went this morning.”
When she stepped back, Pinkie giggled. “I couldn't wake ya for anything, Joe! You were as tired as Rainbow Dash after a training session! Or in the middle of the day. And in the morning.” she replied, bringing a hand to her chin. “She needs to get more caffeine in her.” A bounce came to Pinkie as she wiggled on her toes. “Ooh! We should totally make a smoothie for athletes to try when they come by!”
The brown-maned stallion just shook his head. His marefriend wasn't the most energetic mare in town for nothing. Looking at her now, she was the picture of brightness and cheer. Her luscious pink mane was tossed back behind her head, framing her heart-shaped face as she beamed at him. Following the trail of her mane down brought Joe to observe just how bouncy she really was that morning: the light pink shirt with striped sleeves did little to hold back how the swell of her bust followed her motions. It almost made him question if she'd forgotten a bra that morning; she'd once done so when they had spent a passionate night together and gone to work with each other the following morning. Joe had dropped five trays of donuts from watching her for too long.
Tearing his eyes away from the tantalizing display, he observed the rest of her lovely form being hidden behind a thigh-length pink skirt and striped leggings of the same design as her shirt sleeves. Her color coordination suited her well, and the leggings were a nice touch to the supple, pleasantly thick thighs' shape. She was a walking bombshell of a mare, with all the explosive energy to match the term.
“Joe, if you keep drooling like that, ponies are gonna think you've gone and lost your mind!” Pinkie's giggle tore him back to focus on her face, now turned into a humored smile as he wiped at his muzzle quickly and brushed his hand on his pants.
“No sane stallion could keep his mind with such a marefriend like you being so beautiful, Pinkie.” he replied. He almost winced at the sappiness coming from himself; maybe he needed more coffee? Yet she didn't tease him on the reply. Instead, she smiled a small smile and embraced him again, gently so this time.
“You big lug. And ponies wonder where I get so many sweet ideas!” she said before pulling back. It was then that Joe noticed a bag beside her feet, a large green duffel bag zipped up and ready to go.
“What's this for? Did you bring some treats from Sugarcube Corner?” His question was met with an aside glance as Pinkie rubbed her foot against the ground, grinding the toes of her shoes into the grass.
“Not exactly, no. Twilight got a message from the Crystal Empire, about this big meanie that's been messing with folks traveling to the Empire. We're not sure what it is, but it's something big. And he's feisty too, because he keeps attacking the train tracks. Shining's usual guards would handle it, but every time they try, he keeps knocking them away. So Twilight volunteered to help her big brother out. And so we're gonna help out too!” Her explanation made Joe frown, causing her to smile sheepishly. “I promise though, I'll be completely fine! I've dealt with a lot of worse stuff, you know!”
“Yeah, just uh,” he trailed off, scratching his cheek, “You know how I feel about you being in danger. I'd rather almost go with you myself, just to help. Or something.”
Pinkie smiled to herself at Joe's protective nature. It was something she'd come to find he held in reserve for her in particular. Any time there was ever a worry or possible danger to her, he was ready to put himself on the line for her. He always talked up how he had handled brawls before at his diner in Canterlot, but this was something different. She couldn't let him be put in danger either, just as he doesn't want her to be.
“Joe honey, I appreciate the offer. I really do! Like when you offered to babysit Gummy for me when I went to visit Maud at the old rock farms.” she stated. “But you know, this is a little different than that. And I've handled the tough stuff before! I'm an Element, you know!” She flexed an arm and made an aggressive pout, mimicking a wartime rally poster from the old history museums they'd seen once.
Joe chuckled and nodded. “That you are.” He stepped closer and held her by her shoulders. “But more important to me, you're my Pinkie Pie. My marefriend. You don't need to be an Element to be that.” he said before brushing a lock of her hair back behind her ear. “You better promise me you'll come back in one piece. Not one sugar drop out of place.”
Pinkie nodded quickly. “Of course!” she exclaimed. An idea came to her mind suddenly, and she turned her head left, right, and all about while Joe blinked in confusion until she spoke. “And when I get back, maybe you and I can set aside some of that chocolate fondue for some fun?” The playful tone made his imagination harken back to other times when such words were suggested to him. The resulting fun that followed such an invitation formed some of the best and passionate memories of intimacy with Pinkie. It was a quick lesson learned to never underestimate the creative passion of the baker mixed with her lustful desires.
“I think we have a deal, Pinkie.” He said finally, making her giggle before pausing. He watched as her tail shook, followed by her arm and then each digit of her hand. “Pinkie sense?”
“Pinkie sense. Twilight's about to call for me to come meet them at the station. I told them I wanted to try and catch you first.” she explained, hoisting up her bag and slinging it over her shoulder. Once done, she leaned up and kissed him softly, giving him only a moment to return it before she parted. “I'll come find you when we get back!” she added before turning and sprinting in wide strides towards the train station.
Joe could only watch as she went, cotton-candy tail waving behind her as she ran off on her next adventure. Shaking his head, the stallion turned to the diner and dug into his pockets for his keys. It would be a quiet weekend without her around, but he could wait for her. He'd wait as long as she needed him to; if anything, it gave him a drive to work that much harder to be ready for when she got back. Maybe he could concoct a surprise for her to enjoy when she got back?

The fingers tapping on the counter kept their steady rhythm as their owner stared at the clock above the doorway. The tapping motions had been steady for the past two days, steadfast as his patience while he waited out every lingering second. The diner itself was steady in business, customers coming and going with hands full of either prepared baked goods or empty wrappers with their contents in their owners' stomachs. But it would be another server or cashier who would answer to each customer, while Joe kept to himself.
It had been two days since he knew of the Elements' return to Ponyville from their journey out to the Crystal Empire. Joe had been told of this by his co-worker Rosemary, who had spotted the train bearing them home. She had been waiting for her cousin Sage Ribbon to come to town. Unfortunately, she told Joe she did not see them particularly arrive, only knowing it was their train when she saw the royal guards of the Crystal Empire stationed at the train's doorways.
Joe's own investigation had bore little fortune in seeing Pinkie herself as well. Granting her a day to give her time to rest – which she'd surely need, if her tales of their past adventures were any indication – was plenty welcome. He simply took that time to cook her up one of her favorite treats, a chocolate and vanilla sundae, to bring it to her. Arriving at Sugarcube Corner, Mr. and Mrs. Cake were delighted to see their fellow baker.
But when he explained he wanted to go upstairs and surprise her with it, the look they shared before answering made him suspicious.
“Pinkie told us that she doesn't want to be bothered by anypony. Not that you're a bother!” Mr. Cake explained at Joe's frown. “Just that she doesn't want to be seen. These journeys they go on take so much out of them. It's the same as her hitting a huge sugar crash like at Hearth's Warming.”
Joe had sighed and nodded. “I see. Could you at least tell her I stopped by and give her this?” he requested.
The Cakes had agreed, and he passed it along to them before departing. The walk back was far less enjoyable than his arrival, and he had chanced a glance back to look at the upper story where Pinkie lived. Joe had paused when he thought he saw the curtains move, but when he blinked, there was nothing. The donut maker left and returned to his post, though his workers could denote a lackluster effort in his voice and actions.
In the present day, however, Joe's patience was dwindling. Working and living on the streets of Canterlot left one with a sharper awareness of ponies than the typical civilian. It was how he could gauge when a crying child might want an ice cream treat rather than a milkshake, or how a frustrated post office worker might want to take apart his sundae with his fork rather than use that fork on his own employees. When he put that sense to work on debunking the mystery of Pinkie's absence, now going on three days, it told him he needed to seek out answers. He might just have to put the squeeze a little on somepony to get them, however.
The bell ringing snapped him from his thoughts, bringing his attention to the customer who walked in through the front door. With as dramatic a flourish as one might expect, Rainbow Dash entered the diner with her head held high and wings at rest behind her. If she had room, she'd have allowed them to be spread wide in a display of athletic prowess, he was sure. Pinkie had always told him how Dash loved to exhibit her abilities. Her lean, muscular form was a testament to this fact, undoubtedly crafted from the strict Wonderbolts inspired regiment she kept herself to.
Oh yes. Joe knew plenty of Rainbow Dash's quirks and gears. He was counting on one particular quirk as she approached him.
“Rainbow Dash! Been awhile since I saw you wander in here. I think the last time was for snacks for the Daring Do movie premiere, right?” he asked, putting on a wide smile at seeing her.
“You betcha! Those treats were some of the best around! Of course the most awesome mare in town would get them for the most awesome movie!” Joe had to chuckle to himself. That was another thing about Rainbow Dash: if she could allow it, she'd invoke every use of “awesome” as a word she could make.
“Well, you're in luck today. I happen to have something extra to spare in the back. And since you're my 250th customer this month, I reckon you can have it.” He said.
This got the mare's attention immediately. “Is it anything like that triple chocolate milkshake you and Pinkie gave me that one time? I swear I got such a brain freeze from it, but it was so totally worth it!” Her voice cracked as her wings gave an excited flap.
“Even better. Come on, follow me. Rosemary, watch the counter would you? Vanilla, come here with me. I'll need a second hand.” The tan-colored mare gave a nod and sat down her tray to follow Joe and Rainbow Dash to the back storage room. Stepping into the room allowed a refreshing chill of AC to wash over them each, Joe smiling whilst Dash and Vanilla both gave a light shiver. Dash was most affected, being clad only in her workout attire of a t-shirt and shorts.
“So where's this surprise at?” she questioned, raising an eyebrow at Joe.
Donut Joe only smirked and opened a door labeled “Employees Only”, holding it open for her to step inside. The excited gasp that came from the pegasus' lips was given cause when he followed in after her, Vanilla shutting the door behind them. Within the office, placed atop his desk, sat a clearly marked barrel of Apple family brand cider.
“Is that...”
“Blueberry Superstition. One of the last remaining barrels that hasn't been drank, destroyed, lost, or stored away in a museum.” Joe answers for her. Seeing her enraptured with the barrel, he nods at Vanilla, who locks the door. “Brewed some time ago back when Ponyville still bore a wider expanse of farms dedicated to cider marketing. A friend of mine in Canterlot saved me one of these for special occasions. One glass of that is said to be worth more in bits than the usual 'high class quality' ciders out from Manehattan or Appleoosa.”
Rainbow approached the barrel with twitching hands, clearly eager to sample and see if the rumors hold true. “A-and you're just gonna give me this?” she asked in disbelief.
“Hey. A special customer is a special customer. And I always heard tales of your cider appreciation from folks when cider season rolled around.” he replied, walking around her to stop next to the barrel. “Go ahead.”
Not one to turn down such an invitation, Rainbow immediately knelt in front of the barrel and turned the faucet fixed upon the barrel's middle. But to her surprise, no liquid ambrosia came forth to greet her taste buds, only dry air. Blinking in surprise, she lifted up and turned the faucet more, yet to no avail.
“Uh, Joe? Is this thing broke?” she asked, looking up at him.
Joe stared at her, then the barrel, before laughing. “Oh! Silly me.” He chuckled, making Rainbow give a small nervous laugh as well while he continued. “No, it's not broken.” he turned and reached down behind the desk and lifted up a see-through mug bearing the royal purple cider the rainbow-maned mare sought. “See, this is all that's left of it. One single glass. Terrible shame, I know.”
Looking at the mare's face, you could swear she wasn't seeing a mug of cider, but almost one of her own precious Wonderbolts figures being held for ransom. “Joe. Please. Be careful with that. Don't spill any drops.” she urged him.
She was fixated on the mug so much that he was sure he could have led her all around town with it. But instead, he only took a step forward, mimicking a tripping motion to make the cider slosh in it's container while Rainbow flinched visibly.
“Oh, I wouldn't dare. I mean, something like this? Why, you've better luck finding a golden egg in a hen house.” he replied, swirling the purple cider about in its glass. Looking to her, he smiled. “And I did promise you it, after all.”
“Joe, what's going on? Why are you…?” Rainbow asked. Her words trailed off as she frowned. “Is this some kind of cruel joke?”
“Joke? No, no, not at all.” He assured before frowning at her. “What is a joke though? Is nopony telling me what's happened to my marefriend, Pinkie Pie.” He said firmly, staring at her as he sat the mug down. “And you're going to give me the details. Or this cider is going right down the drain.”
“You wouldn't! That vintage hasn't been in town in 10 years! I know it hasn't, I had Twilight check!” Rainbow pleaded. “Besides, you said you promised me that!”
“If you give me answers.” Joe persisted, tapping his finger on the side of the mug and making it lean forwards over the edge of the desk. Rainbow's face paled but she sighed as it settled and righted itself once more. “Talk. Where is Pinkie Pie?”
“I don't know. I don't keep up with her. You think I can just find her that easy? That mare is the grandmaster of hide and seek! Even Discord couldn't find her in his own dimension, and he created that place himself!” she exclaimed.
“That's not a good enough answer, Dash.” Joe stated, eying her as he poked the mug once more. The cider gave a wet slosh as it stirred within it's confines. “I know she's been holed up in Sugarcube Corner. She's been there since you all returned from the Crystal Empire.”
“Then why don't you go see her then? You're her coltfriend for Celestia's sake!” she countered.
“I could. But I find it suspicious that so many ponies are so intent on keeping her hidden away from me. I called the Cakes, but they told me she suddenly had fallen ill. Pinkie doesn't get sick that easy. Then they tried to say she'd been visiting with Fluttershy. But Fluttershy informed me that she hadn't seen Pinkie all week.” He detailed.
“Ok, ok!” Rainbow said, holding up her hands in a placating gesture as his hand drifted to the precariously placed mug. “Look, we had to deal with some chump at the Crystal Empire who was claiming to be of greater magical might than Cadance and Shining, ok? He was trying to say he deserved to rule because of some old bylaw about magical monarchy or something.” She stated. At Joe's nod, she continued. “His whole threat was that if he wasn't made king, he'd steal away the kingdom himself. He had apparently already stolen some treasures himself. We weren't sure how he did it.”
“Twilight figured it out though. That egghead knew he was using his magic to do something with all the stuff he'd been stealing. As it turned out, the guy had a talent for shrinking things down to size, right? He could make a statue be like, a billion times smaller and fit in your saddlebag. So when we confronted him, he tried to use it on himself to escape.” Rainbow detailed before sighing. “We caught the guy and came back here and that's all I know! I didn't even see Pinkie on the trip home!”
Joe stared hard into Rainbow's violet hued eyes and couldn't find any dishonesty amidst her claims. “Is that the truth? You don't know what happened to her?”
“I swear it!” She exclaimed. “I would have told you myself, but I promised not to say anything-crap!” She covered her mouth as Joe frowned and plucked up the mug. “No, wait! Wait!” She yelled as he held the mug half turned, to where any simple twitch of his wrist would send precious drops to the floor.
“I don't want lies, Rainbow. I've had enough liars in my lifetime to turn tail and never look back.” Joe warned.
“Just-just hang on!” Rainbow plead. “Look, Rarity and Twilight made me promise not to say anything. They knew what was up with Pinkie, but they didn't tell me when I asked. She wasn't hurt, because we'd have known if she was. But they didn't want me to see her. So I promised not to say anything until Pinkie said it was ok!”
Joe stared her down before sighing and setting the mug back down, the liquid remaining wholly intact within the glass. “So she's not hurt. Just locked away in her room without anypony to talk to, or to have listen to her. And she made you and everypony else promise not to say anything? Was it a Pinkie swear?”
“No, it wasn't. Trust me, we all know what happens if you break one of those. No cider's worth that.” Rainbow answered. “That's all I know!” She brought her hands together and knelt in front of Joe. “Please!”
“I'm kinda questioning your honesty, Rainbow. It doesn't sound like the mark of a friend to abandon somepony when they need folks around them to help them out.” Joe countered, making her flinch at the accusation. “Where's the loyalty in that?”
Vanilla, who was looking on from the doorway at the whole spectacle, wasn't sure what was more entertaining: Joe's impressive posturing as a hard-boiled detective demanding answers or Rainbow's pleading for the cider as if it were a real treasure. Taking pity on the mare, she spoke up.
“She's being sincere, boss. I figure she's in the dark on it like you are.” She commented.
Donut Joe nodded and sighed. “Fair enough.” He stepped away from the desk and to the doorway, Vanilla moving aside for him. “Drink up, Dash. You've earned your keep here.”
Not one to waste a chance, Rainbow Dash immediately snatched up the mug and drank a swig of the juice down. The moment it hit her taste buds however, she paused and spat it back into the glass, swerving to glare at Joe. “Hey, wait a minute!”
The stallion paused and looked over his shoulder at the mare. “Hmm?”
“This isn't Blueberry Superstition! This isn't even cider! This is some kind of washed out grape juice!” she protested. “You lied to me!”
“No I didn't.” Joe replies, making her raise an eyebrow as he pointed at the barrel. “That is a barrel of Blueberry Superstition. I've just never opened it. Keeping it in cold storage froze the cider solid within the barrel.” His explanation urged Dash to lay her hands upon the barrel's wooden sides; sure enough, she withdrew her fingers and rapidly rubbed them against her shorts.
“Ponyfeathers, that's cold!” she hissed.
“Be glad I kept it for you, Dash. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a marefriend to go find. Vanilla, you got the place while I go find Pinkie.” Joe ordered, stepping out quickly with the destination of Sugarcube Corner on his mind while Vanilla shook her head as the pegasus cradled her newfound treasure of cider.

The door to Pinkie Pie's room never appeared so foreboding as it did when Joe stood before it a half hour later. He had stopped home first on his way to Sugarcube Corner to freshen up a little, the day being a warmer one than usual. One could chalk it up to the pegasi skipping out on cloud duty, leaving the skies wide open and the sunshine to beam freely down upon everypony's heads. Upon arriving at the bakery, Joe had thought upon how the Cakes' had rebuffed him before. He could appreciate their care for Pinkie's well-being, but at that moment, it was more imperative he face this head-on rather than have to negotiate. It helped that he had a key to Sugarcube Corner, entrusted to him by Pinkie if he ever needed to get inside.
Joe nodded to himself and moved around to the backside of the house, unlocking the small service door the Cakes' had there for deliveries of stock to use in their business. Once inside, Joe took caution to listen for any sign of the Cakes or the little twins wandering about. Those little deviants were adorable, but Pound and Pumpkin Cake would surely be followed by one of their parents looking to keep them from mischief. Yet he could hear no tell-tale sounds of a rattle, nor of a baby's babble. Peeking his head around every corner, the stallion kept his steps light as he peeked into the main lobby of Sugarcube Corner. But no one was there; it seemed he was the only pony present.
“Huh. Usually there's a storm of customers up here today.” Joe remarked to himself as he entered the room. Noting a plain paper sign on the counter, the stallion plucked it up to read it. In broad red letters, it displayed: “GONE FOR FAMILY OUTING. RE-OPEN TOMORROW.”
Raising an eyebrow, Joe hummed to himself before setting the sign down. Without having to worry for their interference, he made his way to the stairwell. Every step was a creak on the wooden staircase as he made his way to where Pinkie Pie's door was. He'd made this trek enough times in the past that it should hardly weigh on him, but there was a tension pinned between his shoulders as he cleared the final step to reach the upper story of the house. His marefriend's door was clearly marked, dotted and decorated with balloon and streamer designs, as well has her name displayed for all to see.
Pausing there, Joe wracked his mind for just what to say in greeting his hidden goal, the urgency he'd been motivated by when leaving the shop now moved aside in place of cautious concern. What if she was hurt somehow that nopony wanted to say for fear of upsetting her or himself? What if she'd been turned into some sort of terrible monstrous form, kept at bay only within the confines of her personal space? Joe's hand hovered at the wooden paneling of the door in wait for his mental debate to cease.
'The day I choose to leave my special somepony alone by herself is the day I stop being her coltfriend.' He told himself mentally.
Joe's knock on the door sounded twice, in rapid succession. But the muffled reply was quiet enough that he had to lean against the door and press his ear to it to hear.
“Mrs. Cake, I'm fine, really. Go out with the twins.” It was so lackluster that it made Joe wonder why he hadn't just charged up the stairwell the first time round.
“Mrs. Cake is out with the twins and her husband. It's me, Pinks.” Joe stated. “It's Joe.”
There was a brief clatter as something fell to the floor in Pinkie's room. If he could wager a guess, Joe would have pegged it as a spoon or other utensil. He'd heard the sound enough in his own diner many a time.
“Joe? How are you here? How did you find me?” she questioned. Her voice sounded closer now, though still muted by the door.
“Come on, Pinkie. I'm secret agent Joe, remember?” he joked. “Always on the prowl, poking my nose where others try to hide?”
“But I didn't tell anypony I was still here! I haven't even left since we got back from the Crystal Empire!”
Joe leaned his back against the door and chuckled. “Yeah, well. Rainbow Dash isn't the best secret keeper around, you know. Especially when there's cider at risk.”
A small giggle could be heard from the other side before a thump followed it. She must be sitting like he is right now, back to the door. It made him immediately want to try and open the door, if just a tiny portion, to find her hand and hold it.
