Putting Her Dreams Aside

A Mother and Her Young

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Rainbow hummed happily as she felt her foals nursing from her teats. The cyan mare was laying on the floor on her left side, her head resting against a pillow as she kept her eyes closed. She had learned that this position was much more comfortable than the one she had used in the hospital bed, both for her and her kids.

Down below, Bright Skies had opted to sit on her rump and suckle from her mother's right breast, all while giving her brother enough room to nurse from the left as he lay on his side. Both foals were feeling wonderfully content as they drank their mother's milk. Like always, they would suckle for a time, then pause, and then continue. Each foal each gave tiny little sucks until they felt that their mouth couldn't hold any more milk. At that point, they would gulp it down, and not a second later would go back to suckling. It was a rather redundant routine, but it was one that they, plus their mother, had gotten used to, and it was one they were all happy with.

As Dash opened her eyes to see if everything was alright with her son and daughter, she extended her right wing and draped it over the nursing foals, giving them a bit of privacy. It wasn't really needed, though, as they were the only three ponies in the room, but Dash didn't care. She wanted her foals to know that she was protecting them whilst giving them a wholesome, healthy meal.

Since the foals had been born a couple of weeks ago, Rainbow had come to enjoy nursing more and more. She knew why she initially thought it wasn't her kind of thing to do, but now, it was something she looked forward to every single day. It partially had to do with the fact that nursing her foals would help her shed excess pregnancy weight, but at the same time, it was a special bonding experience between her and her kids, one that helped her to relax at any random time throughout the day. All she had to do was simply lie down and let Bright and Strato do all the work.

Ever since Fluttershy had made her realize just how important she was to her foals, Rainbow Dash wanted to spend as much one-on-one - or, in this case, one-on-two - time with the two of them. Dash tried her best to do just that, whether it was playing with them or reading to them from one of her Daring Do books, but feeding them from her breasts was the best way to accomplish that desire, in her opinion. Whenever she nursed Bright and Strato, the atmosphere around the three of them became absolutely tranquil, their setting becoming one of the most intimate for both mother and foals. Each little infant got their fill of one of the most natural foods in existence, all while the mother simply relaxed, taking the occasional time to keep an eye on her precious ponies and making sure everything was alright.

Rainbow had eventually lost track of how long she had been nursing before she felt one pair of lips detach from one of her nipples. As she lifted her outstretched wing, she looked down and saw Bright Skies pulling her head back, the filly having finished emptying her mother's teat.

Trying her best not to interrupt Stratosphere, who was still happily drinking his mother's milk, Rainbow reached her right foreleg out and carefully brought her daughter closer to her face. She then draped Bright's head over her shoulder and began using her left forehoof to burp the infant filly, all while continuing to lie on her side.

After about 10 soft, yet firm, pats on the back, Bright Skies let out a cute little burp, making Dash smile. Rainbow then brought her daughter in front of her and held her with her left foreleg. The cyan mare then whispered, "Who's a good little filly?" to her daughter, following it up by blowing a few playful, yet quiet, raspberries on the filly's little tummy. This caused Bright to giggle rather audibly, but Dash was quick to bring a hoof to her mouth and shush her, worried that the excess noise would deter Stratosphere from feeding any longer.

Dash's technique seemed to work, but as Stratosphere continued suckling his mother's nipple, he realized that less and less of his mother's sweet, warm milk was coming out, until finally, the flow stopped completely. After giving a few more test sucks, he unlatched himself from his mother's breast and turned his head to look the mare that it belonged to in the eyes.

Setting Bright Skies to the side, Dash sat up and picked up her son, draping him over her right shoulder like she did with her daughter. It took her around 15 pats on the back this time around to make the little colt burp, and once he did, she brought him back down and cradled him in her forelegs.

Dash then looked down at Bright, but was surprised to see that her daughter had already curled up next to her and fallen asleep, the filly's little head resting against her mother's cutie mark while she unconsciously grabbed her mother's tail with her forehooves. This made Dash smile in a way that one would think she just saw the most precious thing in existence.

Keeping Strato in her right foreleg, Dash slowly picked up Bright with her left so as not to pull on her own tail. It didn't take long for her multi-colored tail to become untangled from the filly's forehooves. Though she thought it was cute, she knew that her daughter couldn't cling to her tail forever.

Dash carefully hovered into the air, both foals in tow as she floated over to the crib. She knew that Bright Skies was ready for a nap, so she carefully lowered her into the crib, as she didn't have a free hoof to lower the side of it. Once she did, Rainbow tucked her daughter in before looking back at her son. Surprisingly - but at the same time, not so surprisingly - Stratosphere had fallen asleep as well, presumably from the warmth from his mother's milk that emanated gracefully from his midsection. Dash then gave her son a kiss on the forehead before using her now free hoof to quietly lower the side of the crib and place him next to his sister.

As Dash pulled the blanket back, she leaned past Strato and gave Bright a kiss on the forehead. She then tucked both foals in at the same time, each infant squirming slightly in their sleep as they got more comfortable under the white sheet while they went through the early stages of their nap.

Smiling warmly at her sleeping children, Dash pulled the side of the crib back up and left them alone as they drifted off to dreamland. Rainbow then left the nursery feeling quite soothed and content, knowing that she had once again gone through her favorite routine of all with her two newborns, laying down with her foals and relaxing while giving them the natural nutrition they needed to grow big and strong, something that every loving mother wanted for her little ones.

Author's Note

I had not originally planned for this event to be its own chapter, but once I started writing it, I figured it was worth a shot, as I had been meaning to write something solely dedicated to Dash's new perspective on nursing.

I realize this is a much shorter chapter, but I can assure you that what I have planned for the next chapter will make up for the lack of words in this one.
