Chapter 1: Leaving 18

*BEEP BEEP BEEP*

"Ghaaaaa just 5 more minutes" I yell out to my almost pitch black room, with only the soft blue light from my PipBuck illuminating the room

*BEEP BEEP BEEP*

I slam my foreleg against my nightstand, trying to silence the blaring alarm coming from my PipBuck. Finally getting it to stop, I roll over and swing my hind legs out over my bed. "I hate Monday's" I said. Rubbing my eyes to drive off the sleep I get out of bed.

Oh wait, where are my damn manners, I should probably introduce myself to y'all. My name is Velvet Melody, I'm a Unicorn mare living in the great and wonderful Stable 18. My cutie mark is a Treble Cleff, signifying my special talent in singing all kinds of music. But I'm not just the Stables entertainment mare, I'm also the medical pony.

You see Stable 18 isn't exactly a very big place, and doesn't quite have a very big populace so we all have to fill in where we're needed. It just so fucking happens that I know how to sing and how to bandage up a pony if they decided to be a complete idiot and get themselves hurt......... again.

A sudden knocking at my door throws me out of my thinking state and throws me off balance. "WHOOOOOOOA" I say aloud as I hit the ground "Whose there?!" I yell at my door as I rub the side of my head, having hit it on the ground.

"Come on Velvet it's time for breakfast. Don't want you sleeping in again" said a very familiar voice of a very familiar mare.

"It's open Purple!" I literally yell at the door

My door slides down into the ground, revealing a purple unicorn mare with a slightly lighter purple in her mane and tail. Purple Star, my best friend since like the day we were born (we were actually born on the same day!) stared down at me with her beautiful burgundy eyes "You ok down there Velvet" Purple asked with a little adorable giggle.

Ok yes, I'm going to go ahead and throw it out there. I love Purple, I mean love love her. To be honest I've had a crush on Purple since we were fillies. We've spent nearly every waking moment together, even though she's one of the Stables security guards. Just the way she moves, how she swings her hips just a little always gets me staring at her flank. I-I've never told Purple how I truly feel about her, because I'm afraid of what she might say to me if I told her that I had a mad crush on her and really wanted to see if I could get in bed with her.

"Stable to Velvet, Stable to Velvet. Anypony home?" Purple says as she waved her hoof in front of my face, bringing me out of my stuber.

"Huh, what? Oh yeah sorry Purple, let's go get some breakfast" I say trying my best to not look like a complete idiot, which most of the time I fail at. Epically.

"You are something else Velvet" Purple says as she helps me to my hoofs and walks out the door, swaying her flank ever so slightly. I catch myself staring and quickly trot off after her.

As always on my way to just about everywhere in this damn stable I have ponies stopping me asking for my autograph, even though I know most of these ponies have asked me at least like 5 times for it. But I'm never one to turn down my loyal fans. I don't know where down my family tree I inherited my smooth silky singing voice, and I don't know if it's a gift or a curse

Purple and I arrive at the cafeteria and jump in line waiting to get our meals. This almost seems routine to us by now, but it's always a gift to get some of Auntie Rosa's home made cooking. Rosa, a light pink unicorn mare with with a deep pink and blonde mane and tail has always been a family friend of my parents, who actually made Rosa my goddessmother. My mom and dad passed away a few years ago from natural causes, and Rosa has been looking out for me ever since.

"Well there's my favorite niece!" Rosa proclaims enthusiastically when me and Purple reach the front of the line.

"Hey Aunt Rosa!" We share a brief hug before she literally piles on some of the most delicious smelling, and tasting, food you will ever taste.

"I'll be in later for my checkup Velvet, before the lunch rush" Said Rosa.

I smile at her "Sounds good Aunt Rosa". Me and Purple take our food in our magic and we. Are our way towards our usual table and sit down.

"So, anything interesting happen in security lately Purple?" I ask as I dive into my food. Purple always was more of a less messy eater then me and took her time eating

"The same as always. Sitting at a desk looking over papers. I wish for some adventure, more then this boring dull life in here"

As if on cue, the voice of the Overmare came over the loudspeakers "Good Morning Everypony, please report to the atrium as soon as you all could. Thank you!" and her voice cut off.

"What was that about?" I ask as I finish off my food and look over at Purple, who had a similar confused look on her face as I was pretty sure I had.

"I have no idea, but I guess we should go find out" She said as she levitated our trays over to the wash bin, where a scrawny looking Earth Pony stallion was washing the dishes and we walked out towards the atrium.

We got to the atrium, the biggest room in the whole stable, to an already large gathered crowd. "If the Overmare asked the entire stable population to report here, then it must be big" said Rosa, who had since joined us.

"Must be, but let's fin-" Purple started to say before she was cut off from the voice of the Overmare amplified over us.

"Thank you for coming everypony! Now I know your all wondering why I've called you all here today. Well, it's time. It has been 200 years since that door sealed and the point was that after 200 years the door was to be opened and for us to leave, to re-build. Well we have no idea what the world outside is like, so I'd like to have an exploritory team of two go out and record what they see out there for at least 1 month then return here. Anypony want to make history?" said the Overmare

Wait........... What?! Actually open the door t-too the outside world?! Was she insane or something. How could anypony- "I'll go!!" Said an all too familiar voice as a very familiar purple hoof shot up beside me "I want to help the stable, only as long as Velvet here comes with me"

Oh she is so dead for this!

"Very well, report to my office when we're done here so we can prepare you to leave. Dismissed everypony!" Said the Overmare before she trotted off back to her office.

Purple, what the fuck have you just gotten us into?!

"You two are out of your damn minds!!!!!" Rosa just about screamed at us "Velvet, I promised your parents that I'd look out for you, I can't allow you to do this!!!" We were standing outside the door to the Overmares office. We had spent the last couple hours talking and getting prepared to be the first ponies to ever leave the stable in 200 years.

"I'm sorry Aunt Rosa, but we have to do this. We'll be watching each others backs" I tried reassuring my aunt. "Just-just promise me you'll come back, alive, both of you!" she was in years by this point as she hugged us both tightly

"Don't worry Rosa. I'll make sure to keep Velvet alive out there" Purple said as she holstered her standard issued 9mm pistol into the holster that was strapped to her foreleg. I rolled my eyes and glared at my best friend, because it was all her idea to do this suicide run.

Everypony was either wishing us the best of luck, calling us completely insane or just didn't look at us all together the whole time we walked from the Overmares office to the main entrance. I guess they were thinking the same thing I was, that we were more then likely going to die out there.

The Overmare was waiting for us by the large gear-shaped door that was the entrance to the stable. "I thank you both greatly for doing this. I wish you the best of luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor" the Overmare told us as she gave us a quick salute. We saluted her back, our saddle bags swaying a bit. Purple loaded her saddlebags up mostly with ammo for her pistol and some food, while I carried all of our medical stuff. Healing potions. Med-X, magically enchanted bandages, Rad-Away, etc etc etc.

The Overmare turned to the console and entered the password that had been passed down from Overmare to Overmare since the very first Overmare, Colgate I think her name was. A horrific screeching sound rang through the air as the large mechanical arm swung down from the ceiling and latched onto the door, pulling it away and reveling the outside world to us for the first time. "We'll be back soon Aunt Rosa" I say as I give Rosa one last hug before me and Purple walk to the threshold of the door.

"You ready Velvet?" Purple asks me as we walk across the threshold onto the, what's it called? Dirt? Yeah dirt, the dirt of the outside world.

"As ready as I'll ever be Purple" I say back as the same screeching noise sounds, the door sliding back into place and sealing us off from the only home we've only known.
