Where did they come from?
Princess Celestia stood in the Canterlot gardens, admiring the new flowers that had been planted just last week. This had been the first time she'd been out of the castle in a month. She pricked her ears as she heard hoofsteps approaching. She looked over her shoulder to see her former student trotting towards her. The princess looked towards the horizon, where the sun was setting slowly. "Beautiful day, isn't it?" She said, sitting down and patting the ground beside her.
"Indeed it is." Twilight replied, summoning a comfortable chair instead. "Princess," She started, tentatively raising a hoof. "I have a question."
"Yes?" Celestia said, obviously aware of what would come next.
"What were the Wendigos? And I don't want all that horseshit about them being spirits of hate. I want to know the truth."
Celestia sighed. "I suppose someone should know. It all started about a hundred years before we came to power."
The ponies of the old Equestria were in the middle of a very large famine. The likes of which had never been seen be pony eyes. Earth Ponies could not grow anything that year. The Pegasi naturally assumed that they were hoarding the food till they could grow more. They did not dare attack the Unicorns, for fear of their powerful magic. A few of their kind had tried for the stash they assumed the Unicorns had in their possession. None returned.
Princess Platinum sat on her throne. "Whatever shall we do? Without the Earth Ponies, our food supply is almost gone. We cannot last much longer!" The white Unicorn flopped onto a couch beside her throne, crying pitifully. While the other two races bickered, the Unicorns were starving. Most were so weak, the only magic they could do was a weak light spell, point to the nearest rainbow, and play rave music. But a few knew more powerful spells. These ponies were experimenting with new spells, doing their best to perform food spells. Unfortunately, one of them was practicing in front of a mirror when he had a magical surge. A ray of light shot out of his horn, bounced around the room, and hit him in the stomach.
A couple hours later, Princess Platinum summoned her second-best magician, as Clover the Clever was off on one of her missions again. A guard walked towards his tower. After three guards didn't return, she sent an entire platoon to investigate. Only one returned. He reported that he'd sealed off every possible exit of the tower. He then collapsed. He never woke.
"What!" Twilight shouted. "What do you mean?!"
"If you'll let me finish..."
