"Twilight?" A white pony trotted into the room, cautiously watching me as I sat at my bed reading "Elements of Friendship: The first bearers of Harmony." As the pony took another step forward I set the book down.
"Twilight?" The pony's voice rang forth in a swarm of kindness and compassion, but there was something buried within that voice. A sadness that permeated this pony so deeply. A sadness that this pony tried so hard to hide. A sadness that, no matter what, would always show in her eyes. I met her eyes, the faintest glimmer of tears shining over them, and brought a hoof up to her muzzle.
"What's the matter little filly?" I spoke clearly, though quietly, as if the mare in front of me would vanish in a heartbeat unless I held on. In some way, I recalled hearing that from somepony, but the memory was fuzzy and without form."Twilight... Please, hold on..." The memory was at the forefront of my mind, I struggled to remember its significance, but the pony in front of me broke my concentration with an intake of breath.
The mare spoke again, softly and slowly this time, as if she were choosing each word carefully.
"Twilight... Do you know who I am?"
That name struck me for some reason, it reminded me of books, and a tall oak tree. Meanwhile, the pony across from me watched me carefully, each breath seemingly labored. It seemed like the mare was talking to me, but the name was only vaguely familiar. I looked at the mare, and spoke quietly.
"No... Should I?"
Silence. A long heavy silence filled the room as the mare looked away. For a period of time the mare started out my window, her lower lip trembling. Looking closer, I could see tears falling freely down her face. Then quietly, almost silently, she spoke again.
"I... It's me... Celestia..." The mare turned to face me fully, tears streaming openly down her face.
"Please." She spoke quietly again, each word seeming like a prayer.
"Please remember."
I opened my mouth to interject, to tell her that I remembered everything perfectly fine, I just didn't remember seeing her before. The mare continued on though.
"I'll find a way Twilight... I'll find a way to bring you back..."
The words she spoke were quiet, and I felt like they were more for her than for me. Sniffling a little bit, the mare turned and left the room, the tears continuing to stream down her face. I sat down on the bed, and glanced at my nightstand, seeing a new book to read. I picked it up and read the title aloud. "Elements of Friendship: The first bearers of Harmony." Today was gonna be a good day I thought.
Opening the book, a paper slipped out and floated gently down to the floor. Scooping up the paper, I opened it and began to read.
"Twilight," it began, "I hope I am wrong, and the situation isn't as bad as everypony seems to fear, but if you are reading this... Then maybe I can help you. You are Twilight Sparkle, and you are slowly forgetting who you are. If you're reading this, you probably don't remember reading this. Maybe by the end of it, you won't remember reading this letter either. Please, try to remember this letter, and read this book. Maybe something in it will jog your memory. Maybe something in it will let you remember our friends. Twilight... Please, hold on..."
Tears were landing on the page now, further dampening the already wet paper. I placed the paper back in the book, and set it on the bedside table. "I'm so sorry Twilight. I hope you can remember one day." I hung my head and began to openly sob. I couldn't imagine forgetting one's self, or one's friends, or the pain that must cause for those friends. As they slowly watched somepony they love change, become a different person, to lose everything that makes them themself.
A knock at the door, before a white stallion entered the room, closely followed by a pink mare. Together they looked at me and spoke softly. "Twilight?"
