Rarity felt a yawn stir in her chest, and raised a hoof to catch it gently as it emerged, lest she offend the Wonderbolt who was currently regaling the table with a tale of bravado and daring, as seemed to be the norm. She blinked drowsily and continued to listen politely to Misty Fly's story, even though the jargon and specifics of it were currently escaping her. Something about an Immelpone Turn and an out-of-control gondola, as far as she could tell.
It'd been a long day for her here at the Wonderbolt Headquarters: a day of measuring innumerable pegasi, interviewing them, observing them in flight, taking copious notes, and making sketches. On top of that, the cloudwalking spell wasn't quite the cantrip Twilight had made it out to be; she'd expended a great deal of energy into casting and maintaining it so that she could safely go out onto some of the more distant training fields and carry out research there.
It was hard work, not least because Wonderbolts tended to be so... well, like Rainbow Dash. None of them believed in sitting still when they could be zooming around at top speed. It was, she felt, a miracle that they were at least willing to sit down to eat supper.
But she was sure that, by the end of all this, she would have a wealth of knowledge that would help her to cover a glaring gap in the market - namely, the pegasus demographic. It seemed to be so firmly entrenched in Equestrian culture that pegasi "didn't do the clothes thing" that even pegasi themselves had come to believe it, even to see it as a point of pride. Certainly Rainbow Dash had never once seen fit to put on as much as a sock for the sake of fashion, if she could get away with not doing so.
That said, now that Rainbow Dash was a fully-fledged Wonderbolt, things had changed somewhat. Rarity was now struggling to remember the last time Dash hadn't been decked head to toe in her official blue-yellow flightsuit. But that wasn't the same. That was a uniform. Rarity wanted to show ordinary pegasi what they were missing; she wanted to break down that cultural wall and set them on the path to discovering their hidden beauty. But to do that, she first had to gain a much deeping understanding of the pegasus form.
"Y'know, you don't have to stay if you wanna get some sleep," muttered a raspy voice in her ear.
Rarity gave Dash a sidelong glance. "Oh, I'm fine," she whispered back. "It would be rude of me to leave now."
"No it wouldn't. This isn't the Royal Banquet. Just say you wanna go to bed."
"Misty's been so helpful to me today, though," Rarity said. "I wouldn't want her to feel like I didn't appreciate -"
"Seriously," said Spitfire from Rarity's other side. "You'll hear this story again tomorrow anyway. Trust me. She won't shut up about it."
"But I -"
"What's that, Miss Rarity? You're falling asleep in your chair?" Spitfire suddenly announced out loud, interrupting Misty in mid-sentence.
"I did not say that," Rarity said crossly. Another yawn welled up from her throat and she stifled it.
"Maybe Dash wants to carry you to bed, huh?" snorted an orange-maned pegasus from across the table.
"Shut it, Blaze," said Dash, scowling.
"I am sorry," said Rarity, "but indeed I am feeling rather tired all of a sudden. I hope you don't mind if I take my leave?"
"Want me to carr- I mean, take you back to the room?" Dash offered.
"I know where it is," said Rarity, a little more sharply than she had intended. Although she didn't dislike any of the Wonderbolts per se, she wasn't particularly fond of their boorish manner, even when she knew they didn't mean to cause any real upset. "Thank you for inviting me to your get-together, all of you. I look forward to seeing you in the morning."
"G'night," said Dash. "Yours is the bottom bunk," she reminded Rarity. "You might need to move a few things."
Rarity's eye twitched momentarily, but she quickly brought it under control. She'd seen that bed this morning; to say that "a few things" were currently resting on it was a laughable understatement. "Can't I take the top one?" she asked, raising her voice to a plainitive mew.
"No," said Dash. "I can't sleep on the bottom bunk."
"Why not?"
"I can't... I just..." Dash rolled her eyes. "I'll explain later," she said. "G'night."
"Good night," Rarity bid her, and departed from the Officer's Lounge for the sleeping quarters.
Why does Rainbow have a bunk bed anyway?, Rarity mused to herself as she trotted down the corridor toward their room. All the other Wonderbolt officers seemed to have their own quarters, but Rainbow Dash was currently quartered in what seemed like cadet lodgings. She vaguely recalled Soarin mentioning something about them being short on space... maybe that was it? She yawned again, deciding that she was too tired to figure it out now, and opened the door to Rainbow's room.
The unearthly pile of stuff was the first thing that so unwelcomingly greeted her. Rarity was fairly sure that the entirety of Rainbow's travelling luggage currently occupied the bottom bunk, and was even more willing to bet that the cupboards and storage units in the corner were completely empty.
Her hoof trembled. A less-cultured pony than her would, at this point, shove the junk pile onto the floor, turn out the light, and leave Rainbow to deal with it. Rarity was even sure that Rainbow was expecting her to do just that.
But she wasn't sure if she could bring herself to make such a mess, even if she was technically only displacing an existing mess. She could at least tidy some of this away. She sighed and resigned herself to it, hoping that Dash would come to bed shortly so that she could help. Oh yes, she would help. Rarity wasn't going to let that mare rest until she'd tidied this away.
I mean, for pony's sake. There are trophies in here, she noted, parting the pile with a hoof to see just what she was dealing with. Why would you leave these on your bed? You have a shelf for those! Rarity's horn lit up as she started to sort some of the items and put them away wherever she could find an appropriate place. After too-many minutes, she'd managed to whittle down the pile to half its former size. A crumpled-up, spare Wonderbolts flightsuit hovered in her telekinetic aura as she considered whether she'd done enough to warrant just leaving the rest for Rainbow and calling it a night.
Suddenly, she realised something was wrong. In her tiredness, she had missed something; something that normally wouldn't have escaped her notice. Rarity had a sixth sense for clothing calamities, and currently, she was in the presence of some anomalous apparel. Her head swivelled toward the flightsuit she was currently levitating.
That is no Wonderbolts uniform, she noted, unfurling it with an audible crinkling. The colors were close enough, but the material certainly wasn't. It wasn't even textile; this garment was made of shiny latex.
"A costume?" Rarity wondered aloud to herself. She pulled it flat and turned it over; she inflated it slightly with her magic to look within. Like the proper Wonderbolts uniform, it was one-piece, with a face hood connected to the neck. Definitely a costume; there was a hole for a unicorn's horn as well as wing-holes on the back.
That's most odd. Why does Rainbow have this? She could easily imagine Rainbow might have owned a Wonderbolts costume at one time; they were popular dress-up items for foals, and Rarity knew that Rainbow had had her obsession ever since she was a filly. But this outfit was definitely mare-sized. Rarity couldn't see Rainbow wearing this now. She'd never been that kind of wannabe; she'd never wanted to dress up as a Wonderbolt, she'd wanted to be one. And now she was. Even if she had played dress-up in her adulthood, why would she bring this thing here? It didn't make sense.

She climbed up onto the top bunk - she needed to lay down to get the costume on, and she certainly wasn't going to lie on that floor. Don't militaries frown upon such untidiness? she wondered to herself, as she laid on her back and began to ease her hindhooves into the neck of the costume. She supposed that maybe the Wonderbolts didn't fit the traditional definition of military; certainly they seemed much more self-directed than the Royal Guard.
The rubbery suit was supple and stretchy, and as much as Rarity hated to admit it, she was rather enjoying the sensation of putting it on. Even if Dash came in now and complained at her, she felt that this little learning experience justified it. She understood Dash a little more now; maybe even understood the culture of the Wonderbolts better, too.

The suit let out a few unladylike raspberries of escaping air as she finally used her hooves to pull the hood on, carefully finding the horn-hole with the tip of her horn before pushing it through, feeling the ring of rubber stretch and cling at the base. Finally, she was able to push her muzzle out through the hole, the suit's eyeholes lining up naturally with her eyes. Her horn flickered a few times to make some minor adjustments, but otherwise, it was a good fit.
She gave a playful smile and admired her shiny hooves for a moment, before carefully descending the bunk ladder, again enjoying the sensation of tightened rubber against her body. She dropped to all fours and approached the plain mirror against the far wall to see how she looked.

She let out the faintest squeak as she sat up. Her sex was normal again, but the memory of all that had happened seemed to still linger within, and she felt fragile and tender. She leaned over the edge of the bunk, and found herself peering down upon a rainbow mane.
"Rainbow," she croaked.
Rainbow started and jumped to her hooves, turning to face her. Rarity noticed that for once, she wasn't wearing anything. Her eyes were tired and bloodshot; she looked pretty awful.
"M-Morning," Rainbow greeted nervously.
"Is it?"
"Y-Yeah, it's... nearly sunrise."
"Haven't you slept?" Rarity asked.
"No," said Dash. "Well, you kinda... took my bed," she said, grinning weakly.
Rarity took a few deep breaths. Her cheeks flushed pink as she tried to collect herself. Humilation was lingering at the edge of her feelings, threatening to swamp her, but she kept it at bay for now. "I... I want an explanation," she said, trying to keep her voice even.
Dash shuffled awkwardly. "Rarity, I'm really, really sorry."
"I just want you to explain," Rarity said. "I must know."
Dash shrugged. "It's... there's not really much to it..." She rubbed her mane in agitation. "I don't know where to start."
"Please," Rarity whispered.
Dash puffed out a tense breath. "Okay, well... that outfit you put on... it's not an ordinary outfit. It's enchanted. I mean, you know that already." She began to pace, her eyes unable to meet Rarity's gaze. "Soarin and I, we... well... we're sort of seeing each other. But not really. We can't. We're not allowed. It's against regulations. We're not allowed to have any kind of relationship. Soooo... one day Soarin showed me that outfit, and told me what it does. I was kinda weirded out at first, but I gave it a try."
"You gave it a try? Deliberately?"
"Of course deliberately," said Dash. "See, Soarin and I aren't allowed to have sex. We'd be kicked out if we did. But there's nothing to say he can't sleep with a doll. That's why he got the outfit for me. I put it on, I turn into a doll, we have sex, I change back... no rules broken, everypony wins. Plus, it feels fucking amazing."
Rarity blanched. "Language, darling!"
"Oh," Rainbow's cheeks flushed, and her momentary enthusiasm flickered away. "Sorry. Anyway, that's all there is to it really. It's not meant for anyone but me. I... I never thought anything like this would happen... why did you wear it?"
"To see how it looked," said Rarity, glaring. "I cannot believe that you would be so unimaginably stupid as to leave such a dangerous item lying around on your bed."
"It's not meant to be dangerous," Rainbow mumbled. "I'm so sorry, Rares. I... I don't know what I can do to make up for this. I... I had to get Soarin, he's the only one who could have changed you back... I'm so sorry about what happened..."
She wiped a tear from her eye. "I messed up bad. Whatever you want to say to me, I deserve it."
Rarity sighed. "Darling, I honestly don't know what to say. I... I need time to think. I shan't be staying here any longer."
"Yeah," said Dash sadly. "Tell me whatever you need, I'll sort it for you."
"You should go to bed," said Rarity, clambering down from the top bunk. "Get some sleep."
"I can't," said Dash, eyeing her mattress mournfully. "Training sessions all day. I'll... I'll walk you to the station, okay?"
"Very well," said Rarity, trotting for the mirror. Her suitcase magically opened and a brush floated out, pursued by several combs, which began to attack her bedraggled mane and force it into some semblance of order. When done, she assembled her notes and packed her bags.
Rainbow didn't say a word for the entire walk to the station, communicating only in nods as she hauled Rarity's luggage. Despite Rarity's low mood, it just didn't sit well with her. If things were to be put right, she supposed she would have to take the first step.
"Rainbow. Rainbow Dash," Rarity said. "Rainbow Dash, you will look me in the eye, right now."
Rainbow lifted her head, flinching as she met Rarity's hard stare.
"I cannot say I'm not angry with you. To put it bluntly, I'm furious. But..." Rarity sighed. "I don't want this goodbye to be painful. You don't deserve that."
Rainbow's eyes watered. "Dammit... y-you're tryin' to make me cry, aren't you?" She wiped her nose on her foreleg. "H-Hate it when you do that."
"Good," said Rarity. "Goodbye, Rainbow. I will write to you when I've had a chance to think things over." She leant forward and hugged the pegasus. "Stay strong. Misery doesn't suit you."
"Heh," Rainbow muttered, embracing gently. "You're too fucking good, you know that?" Her eyes widened suddenly as Rarity's hoof slammed her on the forehead. "Ow!"
"Language!"
