The Draconic Challenge
Chapter 1: The Timber Wolves
Load Full Story___________________Midnight’s POV___________________
I woke up outside on the ground. I’m pretty sure that I fell asleep in my bed last night. I suddenly remember that weird crystal that old dude gave me yesterday. That had to have something to do with why I woke up in the middle of a forest. I turned my head to look around and spotting the crystal I reached out for it only to see my hand was grey and not only that but it was covered in scales. Trying not to panic I looked around and spotted a small pool. I braced myself as I looked into the pool what I saw would change my life forever.
Looking into the pool below, I saw the reflection of a dark grey dragon with a mop of red, black, and purple spines in between his two silver horns. The dragon’s eyes were purple but with flecks of silver in them. I moved my head to the left and the dragon’s head mimicked the movement then I stopped suddenly and changed direction and the dragon’s head did too. I… I was the dragon. This was crazy and yet here I was in another world and I was a dragon. I suddenly heard a snap in the trees behind me and I shot up a tree to my left and laid down on a branch; I ended up sleeping on that branch.
I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping and a breeze rushing through the trees. Slowly turning over on my branch I heard the sound of thundering steps falling right below the tree I was sleeping in. My eyes shot open to see a giant manticore stomping through the forest below. I held my breath as the massive predator passed. Then and there I decided I would never spend another night in this forest ever again. I waited a few more minutes and then giving my wings a few test flaps I decided that I might as well learn how to fly. It took me a few tries and many more after I remembered to grab the crystal, but eventually I started to get the hang of it and pretty soon I found myself zooming through the trees from treetop to treetop. During one of the moments I was taking a break on a branch I suddenly heard a trio of screams much like how a young child might scream upon seeing a monster under their bed and then I heard a howling noise much like a pack of wolves would make. I flew off to find out what was going on and fairly soon I came across a group of young technicolored ponies being surrounded by what appeared to be a pack of wolves made of pieces of wood most of it rotting and covered in moss. Getting ready to pounce on the pile of fear filled fillies
_______________Applebloom’s POV_______________
Applebloom screamed and screwed her eyes shut as the timber wolves prepared to pounce “I knew we shouldn’t have come back. I knew it and now we are going to di-“Applebloom’s internal thoughts screamed, but were suddenly cut short as she heard a mighty roar issuing forth from in front of her and the yelp of a timber wolf accompanied swiftly by a large crashing noise. Applebloom opened her eyes to see a young grey dragon facing down the timber wolf pack and one of their number laying at the base of a tree, broken and unmoving.
___________________Midnight’s POV___________________
I slammed into one of the wolves sending it flying into a large oak tree and, standing protectively in front the group of fillies I unleashed a roar that shook the air around me. The wolves seeing that their way was barred by me, charged me. Their charge ended only five seconds after it began as a large fireball flew forth from my maw consuming two of their number and knocking the rest several feet away. As the wolves recovered I noticed the three fillies hide in a bush. I tried to tell them to run, but was swiftly interrupted by a timber wolf biting down on my neck and starting to twist. I threw the wolf off with a growl and before it could react or recover I bit into its neck and squeezed crushing it in my jaws. I watched as the glow faded from its eyes as it fell apart as I was suddenly slammed into by two other wolves one clamping down on my neck and the other pinning me to the ground. I twisted my head and shot a fire ball straight into the side of the wolf holding my neck killing it and knocking the other one into a tree killing it as well. I knew I was wounded, but I couldn’t give up, not as long as those children were around. Suddenly I got slammed into a tree as I heard a sickening crack as several of my ribs cracked and my wing broke. I was hurt, I was tired, and yet just as the wolf grabbed one of the fillies in his maw I managed one last fireball hitting it in the side blasting it into splinters. Then I fell into darkness…
