I always knew I would die. Question was, when? How? By who? Many ponies would drive themselves insane trying to figure it out, just to ignore it completely later on. I, however, knew i would die on this battlefield. I didn't care how, or when. I had a job to do, that's all thats important right now. I had very specific orders to get behind the enemy and sabotage their supplies. Easy enough.
The air around me is thick with smoke and blazing embers. Over the tops of the trees you could see a massive fire, threatening to engulf the night sky. The small clearing I'm in is nothing special, just a side route off a trail in the local woods. A simple log lays agains a giant stone, slowly rotting away. A tiny stream trinkles through the middle of the clearing, once clear and soothing, now blacked with ash and red with blood.
I make myself focus and prepare for the task at hoof. I pick myself off the ground and start sneaking towards the enemy camp. The snap of twigs sound like cannons in the still air. I remind myself to stay quiet, especially now since im so close. I make it out of the forest and see the camp, a mass of dull gray tents with a red blade emblem on their sides. I silently creep in, careful not to alert any of the unseen perimeter guards.
I make it to a large tent and head inside, knowing it will be empty. A mountain of ammo crates sits before me. I take out a disc-shaped explosive charge out of my pack and gently place it on one of the crates. A slight hiss tells me it's secure. I place a few more around the pile, activate them, and turn to head out of the tent.
Only to come face-to-face with a gun barrel pointed at my face. I immediately freeze, not wanting to provoke the creature. It was standing on two legs, easily towering over me. Its skin was black and pulsed with a sickly orange substance. The body was full of powerful muscles, straining to obey the mind of the creature. The head was wolf-like at best, powerful jaws, long snout, but there were no ears to be seen. The eyes were nothing more than deep pits of darkness, seeming to suck out all the light around them. Its claws were too close for comfort, being less than a foot away. They were sharp as a finely sharpened knife, but aslo extremely flexible.
The creature was staring at me with a absolute sence of hatredand shock. We stood there staring at each other for what seemed like an hour, until it raised the gun a small degree and tightened his claw around the trigger. I ducked and barely missed the projectile, which went into the tent behind me and struck the ammo crates. Immediately, the crates exploded with a great force that sent us both flying. While i was in the air, I started seeing my life flash before my eyes
I was small, still living in Canterlot. I hated the city, everyone was way too uptight. They always fussed over the simplest of things, like the color of their house being a shade too light. Honestly, who cares?
I was returning home from school whn i noticed my front door was ajar. Thats odd, we always keep it closed. Even when leaving, we used the back door. I look in side and find the place a mess. Pictures thrown everywhere, furniture toppled and broken. I walked deeper into the house and walked to my room, only to find all my possessions were destroyed and some missing. I walk to my parents room and freeze. After a few minutes I turn around and run out of the house.
I run, not caring who is in my way. I eventually find myself at the castle. Seeing as the front gates were wide open, I run straight in. I take a few turns and come to a long corridor. Two royal guards at the end become alert as i come into view. They start running towards me with stern expressions. As we near, I jump over them and continue running. After a brief moment of confusion they follow me, getting closer with each step. I bust through the double doors at the end of the corridor, and land in the throne room.
The two princesses jumped up at my sudden arrival. They seemed none too pleased with me. As I was catching my breath one of them spoke.
"What is the meaning of this?"
I stand there, gasping from running when the two guards grab me from behind and force me to the doors.
"We're sorry, your highness. We'll show him the way out." We were almost to the doors when i cried out.
"Wait!" The guards hesitated for a moment. "My parents, they've been killed!"
Everyone in the room never forgot that day. Nopony was close to considering murder. Even the most twisted of minds, Tirek, never came close to commiting the act. So obviously when something like this happens its a huge crisis. The princesses called the royal guard and headed to my home at once.
They found the bodies crumpled on the floor with multiple stab wounds. I was forbidden to enter the room, everypony thinking I would break down if I saw my parents like this again.
The next day, the story was plastered all over the national newspaper. From then on out I was well known all throughout Equestria. Even the griffons knew about me. The princesses put me in a foster home in Fillydelphia. I lived there ever since.
A few years later, they never found out who killed my parents. I was eventually adopted by a strict family. They wanted the best for me, but made sure I worked for it myself. I eventually was getting harassed by bullies at my school. I lashed out at one of them, injuring him badly. My foster parents made me enlist in the Equestrian Army after that, hoping i would learn disipline and control.
Basic training was a blur to me. I was assigned to the 27th Infantry Battalion. I was isolated from them, my commanding officer worried about my past and stress issues with new people. He's a bit cooky. Instead he put me on the mission I'm on now, he sent me out with simple instructions on how to operate my equipment.
I was dropped off near the front lines, and left alone. I had no radio. Nothing to signal with. I was to report back to where i got dropped off in a matter of hours. I began going through the forest. I walked for two hours before I came across a trail. I followed it and found a small clearing. Deciding to take a rest, I stop there for a few minutes. I get up and head to the objective.
