Diamonds in the Dust

A small pink filly trotted down a narrow path, a purple book bag slung over her back. Her eyes were wide, her stomach tied up into a knot. The first day at her new school, first week in Ponyville.

This. Was. Going. To. Suck. Of that, the pink filly was absolutely sure. She never understood why her parents decided to leave Las Pegasus. Sure, most of it was in the clouds, and they constantly had to wear totally un-fabulous, ugly necklaces that clashed with her coat, but at least she had friends that were nice, and no one bullied her. The pink filly had whined, and complained about moving, and even stooped as low as to beg to ask to stay. But, her parents refused to stay, and now here she was.

In a small town, where no one knew her, and... The Pink Pony...

The filly shuddered, remembering the stories. NEVER eat a red or blue cupcake in that town. They told her. Or else you might find yourself in a dark basement...

The distant clanging of bells in the distance shook the filly out of her dark thoughts, and she returned her thoughts to school.

“Yay…” The pink filly muttered, as she walked up a steep hill. “Late to school on, like, my first day of school. Yippee…” The pink filly grimaced when a simple red schoolhouse came into view. How… quaint. The pink filly thought, rolling her eyes. A purple and orange blur whizzed past, and the filly fell over. Standing up, she saw the blur stop, and a pegasus filly her age blush with embarrassment.

               “Er… Sorry about that. I’m just in a rush to get to school, and…” The filly squinted. “Hold on, I haven’t seen you before.” The pink filly winced, ready for the filly to start teasing her. However, all the filly said was;

               “You need a ride?”

The pink filly blinked, then nodded. “Uh, thank you. I guess.” The orange filly winked.

“No prob. Hop on.” The filly waved a hoof at her scooter, and beamed.

               “Ok?”

“I’m Scootaloo. What’s your name?” The pegasus filly started buzzing her orange wings fast, and the scooter started moving.

               “I’m Diamond TiaRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!”

Diamond Tiara’s eyes stung from the sudden rush of wind. She blinked, and felt something wet slide down her face, only to get blown away a second later. The scenery whooshed past, a blur of greens, blues, and yellows rushing past. Then everything screeched to a halt, and Diamond was thrown off of the scooter, and into the dirt. “Ow…” She moaned, and sat up. Scootaloo was laying in the dust as well, her scooter a little ways away with a stone embedded in it's front wheel. Diamond extended a hoof to Scootaloo, which the orange filly took gratefully, and stood up.

               “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. We probably should get inside though…” Scootaloo nodded in agreement.

“GIRLS!” Both fillies jumped, startled by the sudden voice. They turned around slowly, and their eyes met those of a magenta pony’s.

“Why, may I ask, are you late, AGAIN, Scootaloo?” The orange filly blushed, and Diamond ducked behind her.

"Never mind, just know i'll be speaking to your parents about this."

Scootaloo paled at this, but didn't object. The fillies walked in behind the teacher, which Scootaloo explained her name was Miss Cheerilee. Several heads turned as the fillies walked into class, interest sparking in their eyes.

“Alright, we have a new student in class. Would you please stand up, and tell us a few things about yourself?”

Diamond nodded weakly, and stood up. “Um… My name is Diamond Tiara, and I’m from Las Pegasus.” Diamond swallowed, when she saw a pegasus colt raise a hoof. “Um… Yes?”

“How did you live in Las Pegasus, when it’s made from clouds? Earth ponies can’t walk on clouds.”

“Well, we had these necklaces that were enchanted to help us walk on the clouds. Every non-pegasus in town has one.”

Murmurs spread throughout the classroom, and a few fillies glared at her. Diamond felt like sinking through the floor, and would’ve bolted out the door if Miss Cheerilee hadn’t put a hoof on her shoulder.

“Class, settle down! That is very interesting, Diamond Tiara. Why don’t you take a seat now, so we can begin today’s lesson?”

Diamond Tiara walked out of the classroom with Scootaloo. She was eager to get outside, because Scootaloo had been explaining the rules to her about a cool game she came up with, and Diamond was eager to play.

“Hey Blank Flanks!” A voice sneered, and Diamond turned around to see a purple filly with a magenta mane, and a grey filly with a silver mane approaching her. The purple filly had pink eyes, fixated on Diamond Tiara, and the silver filly was just sneering.

               “Uh… hi?”

“Uh, hi?” The purple filly mimicked, and laughed. “Are you kidding me? No one believed your story about you coming from Las Pegasus! My dad has a job there, and he hasn’t bought me some silly ‘enchanted’ necklace that makes you walk on clouds.  You’re a fake. I bet your from, like some little town that isn’t even on the map.”

Diamond Tiara’s eyes stung, and the filly laughed again. “Look Silver Spoon! She’s crying like a little filly! Aww, do you want your mommy, blank flank?” The fillies giggled, and walked off.

Scootaloo ran forward, and punched the purple filly in the side. "LEAVE MY FRIEND ALONE!”

The purple filly laughed. “You punch like a girl. Wait, no, like a chicken! Bawk bawk! Bawk bawk!” The fillies snickered, and walked off.

“Don’t listen to them DT. They're just being bullies.”

Diamond Tiara nodded. They watched the playground for a few minutes, before heading inside.

"I don't feel like going out there anyways. What about you?"

"Me neither." Diamond Tiara said, glancing at Scootaloo. “Are we really friends?”

               “Yeah, why are you asking?

               Diamond Tiara smiled. “Just checking.”
