Let's see here, Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria- no that's used too often, (Lion king beginning plays with the image of the sun rising) No! We aren't Disney so we can't use that. Ugh, let's just introduce myself and skip the once upon a time junk.
I am Helsing, yes, that is the name I was given as a pup by my parents... So what? I'm male diamond dog with a light grey pelt and who some say closely resembles a Husky. but before we start, let me tell you about an event that took place almost seven years before this whole story. It was an ordinary day off in the mountains where we diamond dogs live, overlooking a large desert where eventually a pony town would be built.
It was a diamond dog's duty to extract the gems and crystals from the mountains in Equestria, for the superior dragons who used to devour our kin, but in exchange for the gems and crystals we dug out from the mountains, the dragons would let us live.
I had secretly sneaked outside while multiple diamond dog guards had been busy sleeping so I could just enjoy the sunlight, since us diamond dogs rarely ever go to the surface. But there had been something different about today, I could see off in the distance the cloud city;where, supposedly, a large amount of ponies lived.
I had better eyesight than most other diamond dogs, which I got picked on for, which I never really understood, I can see stuff better than all of you, yet you bully me?
Bah, anyways, I could make out what looked to be some sort of race, taking place in the large cloud city. Likely one of the competitors I assumed, seemed to be emitting a rainbow trail in the sky. I had never seen a rainbow like this before. I heard myths about them but I never actually seen one for myself.
Next thing I know a large ring of the rainbow light gets shot out from the cloud city, followed by the sound of the rainbow explosion going off shortly after.
I had to grip my claws into the rocks to avoid getting blasted off the mountain side, my coat getting covered in dust, but that was the least of my worries. My eyes went narrow looking at the rainbow rings expand for miles, my jaw dropped "if a pony did that… I had best not anger any in the future" I mentally noted closing my jaw to avoid breathing in any sand or dust. Other diamond dogs ran out of the cave entrance, only missing the rainbow explosion by a few moments.
"What in the world was that!" a diamond dog guard said wearing white armor that covered most of his chest and his eyes, which he didn't need since diamond dogs usually will depend on their hearing if they have poor vision.
It's like, for example, a diamond dog is born who can't see too well, (or blind entirely), has their other senses enhanced. Which makes them prime targets to be diamond dog guards. And if a diamond dog was deaf… Well, it's best if we don't talk about what happens to those dogs.
"It… It was a rainbow explosion…" I said unlatching my claws from the rock.
The five diamond dogs who had come out to the surface each exchanged looks, not knowing how to properly respond to me.
"A… Rainbow explosion?" A female diamond dog said clutching the spear in her right paw.
"Yes, it was massive, I'm lucky I didn't get blasted off the side of the mountain by it" I said shifting my gaze to the lower sides of the mountain and noticed cracks forming along it. My eyes went wide seeing the rocks crumble away and a large deposit of crystals and gems became visible. I had been rendered speechless along with the other diamond dogs.
"Gems!" we all seemed to shout in unison. Some time passed and essentially every diamond dog in the caves had come outside in the sun and were hacking away at the gems using steel pickaxes.
It was both something beautiful, and painful at the same time. The dragons would likely let us have an extended rest in return for this many gems, but it was extremely hot in the desert, and being forced to work in such heat was cruel.
Well let me re-phrase that, we weren't forced, but if we wanted to survive, we had to work until we couldn't anymore. It was either that or we got eaten by a dragon. you can imagine we took the former option.
I wasn't too good at mining away perfectly carved gems however, but the other diamond dogs could easily carve out perfect gems with minimal effort, but I wanted to live so I kept mining away in the scorching heat.
Nearly four hours passed when every scrap of gem and crystal was mined away, I looked around, panting heavily from the exhaustion, and saw some of the others had died., What's worse?
Death by heat stroke, or death by dragon… I think I will go with the dragon on this one. I called it a rainbow ripple because it looked very similar to a ripple in the water when someone may have thrown a rock into it, except rainbow colored. Which is somewhat better.
It likely had a much better name, but the heck if I knew, I was eight at the time, now I'm about 15 and things haven't changed too much, I mean there is a town at the bottom of the mountain, and a second rainbow ripple had went off not too long ago while I was busy digging away at some gems.
So every now and again I get a chance to see what the ponies are truly like, because there are old tales of ponies who would cut through diamond dogs like a claw through paper, and would all be corrupt, evil, and have the stench of death following them. But now that a pony town is so close I can now see for myself what they are truly like.
