The Red Arrows, officials the Royal Air Force Aerobic Team, is the world's greatest display team. That's a bold statement but everywhere they go their precision displays and skillful flying in their distinctive bright red Hawks draws enormous crowds. They top the billing all over the world promotion British industry, representing the Royal Air Force and giving great entertainment.
The public face is nine pilots flying their aircraft but behind the scenes there is an organization of more then 100 people. The pilots wear red flying suits and ground crew wear blue.
There is red 10 who coordinated the season, flies the spare aircraft and commenates at the air show. The 'Blue' are fitter, engineers, airframe specialist drivers, photographers, people who look after g-suits and survival equipment and team responsible for the dye that produces the smoke trails is the 'circus' nine engineers who fly in the back seat of the hawks to every display to look after the aircraft while away from base. There is flight operations, planning, administration and public reaction.
A team like this has kept the Red Arrows in forefront of British aviation for almost 50 years. The pilots live and breathe flying, working in an intense atmosphere where their first mistake could be their last. The support team keep the aircraft flying with the knowledge that ok isn't good enough.
Every aircraft has to be perfect shape for every display. The result is spectacular and hopefully the Red Arrows will go on for another 50 years.

Officer Commanding: Martin Higgins age 44, year join 1993.
As Officer Commanding Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (OC RAFAT), Martin is responsible for the Squadron’s flying, engineering, administrative and safety matters and he ensures that the Red Arrows operate in a safe and effective manner, during both practice and displays.
Martin attended Colston’s School, Bristol, and he then became a member of the University Air Squadron during his undergraduate degree in aeronautics and astronautics at Southampton University. More recently, he completed a distance-learning MSc in science.
(Team Leader) Red 1:David Montenegro, 38, year join 1999.
David, 38, was educated at Alleyn’s School, Dulwich where he was a member of the Combined Cadet Force and awarded an RAF Flying Scholarship in his final year. David went on to gain a BA (Hons) in Politics and Theology at the University of Manchester. Keen on all aspects of aviation from an early age, it was his experience on Manchester and Salford University Air Squadron that firmly set his sights on a career in the RAF.
Red 2: Matt Masters, 39, year join 1998.
Matt was educated at King Edward VI school, Southampton where he was awarded an RAF Sixth Form and Flying Scholarship. As a result, in 1993 Matt obtained his Private Pilots License before his driving license and then subsequently went on to gain a Master of Engineering at the University of Bristol. Keen on sport and aviation, Matt joined Bristol University Air Squadron where he completed Elementary Flying Training. Degree complete and following a three month round-the-world trip, Matt was ready to pursue a career in the RAF.
Red 3: Si Taylor, 35, year join 2003.
Si was educated at Allerton High School in Leeds, studying A levels in English, French and Geography. He then went on to study Ergonomics at Loughborough University and graduated in 2002 with a BSc.
Red 4: Mike Bowden, 34, year join 2002.
Mike was educated at St Joseph’s High School in Newport, South Wales. Whilst in Sixth form education he completed an RAF and Air League flying scholarship and went on to gain his Private Pilots Licence aged 17. On completion of his A-Levels he progressed to Cardiff University, sponsored by the RAF, to study joint Computing and Mathematics. Whilst studying for his degree he completed Elementary Flying Training with the University of Wales Air Squadron.
Red 5: Emmet Cox, 37, year join 2002.
Emmet was educated at Long Bay College in Auckland, New Zealand. He achieved the equivalent of A levels in Physics, Biology, Calculus, Statistics and Physical Education. He studied at the University of Auckland and graduated in 2000 with a BSc majoring in Computer Science.
(Synchro Leader) Red 6: Steve Morris, 34, year join 2002.
Steve was educated at Westfield Comprehensive School in Sheffield. Whilst at school he was a member of the Air Training Corps. He then went on to study A-levels in maths, physics and computing at The Sheffield College. After completing his A-levels Steve studied Aerospace Engineering at the University of Sheffield where he was sponsored by the Royal Air Force and spent much of his time flying the Tutor training aircraft at the Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron based at RAF Church Fenton.
(Synchro 2) Red 7: Tom Bould, 34, year join 2005
Tom was educated at Woodhouse Grove School in West Yorkshire. After completing his A levels he attended Manchester University where he studied Aerospace Engineering and graduated with Honours. Tom attended Manchester and Salford University Air Squadron where he was sponsored by the RAF and completed his elementary flying training.
Red 8: Stew Campbell, 35, year join 2005
Stew was educated at Peebles High School in the Scottish Borders. After completing his Highers, Stew studied Physical Education at The University of Edinburgh, graduating with honours. Whilst studying at Edinburgh, Stew was sponsored by the RAF and completed his Elementary Flying Training with East Lowlands University Air Squadron.
Red 9: Joe Hourston, 36, year join 2001
Joe was educated at Fortrose Academy on the Black Isle in Northern Scotland. He moved to Glasgow University in 1997 and studied for an Honours degree in Aerospace Engineering. He received sponsorship from the RAF and completed Elementary Flying Training with the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron.
(Supervisor) Red 10: Mike Ling, 36, year join 2008.
Mike's primary duty is to act as Supervisor for all practices and displays as well as coordinating the summer display season. Secondary to this he will provide display commentary and is lucky enough to fly most days, either airtesting jets, supervising from the cockpit, helping to teach the new pilots or taking the spare jet between display venues. Mike regularly flies around the team to provide the Red Arrows' photographer with an eagle eye view to take some outstanding images.
Mike attended St Olave's Grammar School in Orpington, Kent. He joined 2427 (Biggin Hill) Squadron Air Training Corps, reaching the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer and receiving a Royal Air Force Flying Scholarship.
So this is we're the Red Arrows will start their journey around Equestria, by starting at the Crystal Empire, but the one thing that they don't need to worried about this that the hawks has unlimited diesel in their tank.
