5 years after the events of Tirek, Celestia and Luna have disappeared once more, and the sky is hung in a conflicting balance of the Sun and Moon. The Crystal Empire has vanished once more, either buried under the ice and snow of the freezing North, or something much more sinister. The only part of Equestria that can be lived in is along the borderline between the Day region and the Night region. Twilight's friends are scattered across what is left of Equestria, unable to make their way back to Twilight. Beasts run around, out of control in the Day and Night regions.
The only thing holding the kingdom together is Twilight, and even she is beginning to lose hope.
