Fields of Woe
Luna sat alone in the darkness, tears running down her muzzle as memories of recent weeks began to come to her mind. The hateful murmurings of the nations populace railing through her mind, contempt and disgust evident on their faces. Always expecting the worst, blaming her for all their misgivings never allowing her the chance afforded to any other. Never held to her own merits, the things she did for her people left unappreciated or simply ignored in favour of praising her sister or accrediting her works to her more regal sister. The Sun, the one who could never do wrong, and herself, visage of the moon and guardian of the nights. Despair growing deeper, twisting and changing her heart. Tears beginning to dry as pity became anger, despair anger, and remorse into rage. No longer shackled by her logical reasoning, mind shattered under the torment of others Luna as she was known died a lonely and sorrowful death. The "death" of Luna gave way to a more malignant force. Fuelled by fear and twisted by anger, Nightmare Moon was born. Slipping into a mass of shadows, Nightmare Moon slipped underneath her door and passed the Soldier guarding her room, passing with the shadows with a ready destination in her mind.
The time for the switch of Night and Day came and passed something deathly wrong. Entering the throne room, Celestia stood dismayed at the sight before her. Her precious little sister Luna standing before her, twisted into a malignant apparition of the young pony she used to know. Blackened was her coat and draconic eyes pierced her sister's own eyes with only hatred and rage left within the shell of a pony before her. Luna's body had change to something out of a Nightmare, the bone chilling visage wrenching Celestia's soul.
"Luna, please sister allow my Sun its passage through the skies as we have done in the past years."
"Luna is no more, for we are Nightmare Moon. Our foalish ponies wish to view us as a monster and a tyrant then we shall give them something to fear, something truly worthy of their hatred. There will be no raising of the sun for the night will last forever!"
With this, Nightmare Moon sent a magical blast crashing into her sister. The powerful beam launching her through the window of the throne room, shattering the glass and depositing a winded Celestia onto the palace lawns.
The guard outside of Luna's room grew worried. It was past time for the Moon to be lowered and Luna had still not left her room, but more worrying to the Unicorn stallion was the absence of sound emanating from the bedroom. Holding his breath, he unlocked the door to find the room empty.
panicking he rushed to the throne room to try to find the missing princess only to be shocked at his findings. A now taller and darker Alicorn stood in the room as Celestia approached.
Before he watched Celestia be launched through the window and out into the cold, Nightmare Moon following behind her as Dolour Tale followed out the large hole and into the night.
Dolour Tale stood silently as a spectator to one of the most powerful battles to have ever been seen. Sun and Moon, One proud and righteous, yet blind to her own failings. The other twisted by a hatred and contempt born of ostracization and malformed into the visage of nightmares, dedicated to the ruination of her betrayers.
Dolour Tale's thoughts ran rampant as the spectacle before him unfurled. Could of's and other such possibilities flooding his mind with torments of the past. His mind conspiring against him, the possibilities endless, but one thought stood prominent, his closest kept secret, could it have been enough to prevent this terrible fate from occurring. A solemn grimace breached his face as more memories came to him, of how he stood by and watched his mistress slowly transform into a bitter and twisted monster. In too much pain to pick up the most subtle of hints Dolour Tale let on, for his fear of revealing such a secret prevented him from speaking his mind.
Dolour Tale crept closer to the battle, Day versus Night, Sister versus Sister Love versus Hatred. Steeling his heart he moved closer still, though he had failed to protect her before he may still be able to atone for his mistakes. A slim chance to bring her back from the precipice of despair and the abyss of darkness which she had fallen into. Armour quietly clinking together as he made further his approach.
As the battle raged above him Dolour Tale, overtaken by an unseen force began a melody.
"Oh how I watched with great despair
As your anger grew
Sick of the hatred and the fear
Oh if they only knew"
"We wish our courage with affairs of love
Was shared with our battles too
Maybe then we could have stopped thy fall
And thy resentment too"
"Thy beauty is only matched
By thy stars and the glimmer of thy moon
If only I'd the courage to confess
I could have stopped thy wounds"
"Thy night was brought to last for good
Thy kindness shown was too few
Thus did a sibling battle ensue
This tale is one of the Moon.
The battle continued to a crescendo as Dolour Tale emptied his heart into his words. The tale of remorse and heartfelt longing causing a pause, before the song was continued by another.
"Oh what have I done my sister dear
Lost to my own world as you despaired
If only I had stopped all your fears
There'd be something to repair"
"Twisted by your rage and hatred too
The darkness did you fully embrace
Sadness shall now only fill my heart
As I lose sight of your face"
Oh how I long for days of joy
When your smile shone like my own sun
Filled with your laughter and your mirth
When our happiness was won"
"And now I have to do
Something that I'd rather not
But you have left me no choice
My sorrow is my voice"
The battle coming to a fold as the ancient artefacts, the elements of harmony began their foci for the last time in a thousand years, a blinding white light beginning to coalesce around the form of the Sun. Radiating outwards and striking the form of her sister as it spread. Tears streaming down each of the singers face as they finished the final verse of their melody in unison, ancient magic joining both together, to sing as one.
"Instead we did steel our hearts
And left you by the door
Tis our faults for this mistake
Ourselves we do both abhor"
The magic of the elements rushing towards him, Dolour Tale captain of the princess of the moon's guard closed his eyes for a final time, a final tear dropping down his face to be frozen in time for evermore as a final breeze blew across the near empty battlefield. Nothing left to indicate his presence that night but a single statue wearing archaic armour, eyes closed and tears visible for all to see and one day be recovered by the Sun.
She would place him in her gardens, a worn plaque denoting him and his glories yet the passing of a millennia left only the name visible to stand guard next to a statue she made to immortalise her beloved sister whom she lost that fateful day long ago, itself as faded as the plaque of her most faithful of guards, ever vigilant at her visage beside which he could meet the most final of rests.
