Those Whom We've Always Feared

by Aventicus
Ever wondered what lurked in the shadows of Equestrian lands? Of course you have, there have been countless numbers of stories written about it. Ever wondered about their origin? Well, I think the rest of these kinds of questions are rhetorical.

So, I won't waste your time asking you them. Instead I shall provide a more-or-less original story about these creatures. Ok, *ahem*, *assumes scary voice and begins speaking*: Are you afraid of the dark? Or would you say that you fear nothing? That the dark is only your mind playing tricks on you, nothing more. That you are too brave and too strong to be bested by mere shadows. *Evil laughter* Those ponies are fools! They bear the knowledge of that presence, but they deny it, hoping their refusal of its existence will send it away. Those are the ones who are found by this evil, this darkness, this shadow and taken by it. The ever consuming corruption that steals the souls of those unguarded.
The story of which I am about to tell you is about such a pony. A young, prideful stallion who, to spite his friends ridicule, chose to face this evil and prove it to be non-existent, only that of fairy tales. I don't think I need to tell you how wrong he was.
"Almost every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark. But they're wrong, because it's not irrational."
-David Tennant, The Tenth Doctor.
