Sunset Shimmer gazed at her marefriend lovingly. It was Hearth’s Warming Eve and there was no pony she would rather spend her time with than Twilight Sparkle. The lavender alicorn was asleep in Sunset’s lap with a small smile on her face. She snuggled closer to Sunset, making a groaning sound. God… she was cute.
Suddenly Sunset remembered something important. She carefully levitated a pillow under Twilight’s head and slid away from her. The fiery unicorn trotted to the saddlebag that she brought whenever she slept over at Twilight’s. They had been dating for two years, but it felt so much longer. Sunset had made her decision, she was going to spend her life with this pony and no one was going to stop her. She rummaged through her bag and found what she was looking for: a small velvet box that contained a valuable treasure. Sunset gasped as she heard hoofsteps and hid the velvet box back into her saddlebag before jumping onto the bed and trying to look casual.
“Hey baby… had a good nap?” Sunset asked.
“What happened? Why’d you leave?” Twilight yawned. Sunset fiddled with the sheets of the bed nervously. Quickly the orange mare grabbed Twilight’s hoof and twirled her around before kissing her.
The princess blushed. “What did I do to get so much attention?” Twilight said flirtatiously.
“Oh nothing… you were just being your perfect, awesome, amazing self.” Sunset responded.
Twilight giggled shyly. “You flatter me” She sighed.
Sunset’s stomach rumbled. “Hey! Want to go get some hot chocolate from Sugarcube Corner?” The mare asked.
Twilight grinned, “I was just about to ask you the same thing!”
The pair set out all bundled up. Sunset was sure to bring her saddlebag. Twilight nuzzled Sunset, who was grumbling at the frilly sweater she had to wear.
"Aww cheer up Sunny! You look adorable!" Twilight cooed. Sunset smiled a little. It was impossible to stay mad at Twilight Sparkle. Suddenly, something cold smacked her in the face. Sunset looked around confused. Twilight was levitating some snowballs and grinning slyly and her marefriend.
Sunset looked shocked but then smiled devilishly. “You’re so dead” she said.
Twilight gave her most fierce, determined look. “You’re on!” After the exchange of many snowballs, both mares were covered in snow.
Sunset tackled Twilight into a hug.
“Hahaha! I win!” she cried. Twilight giggled before tickling Sunset’s furry belly. The strong, tough, leather- jacket mare was reduced to a filly crying out for mercy. Twilight stopped and beamed triumphantly. Sunset surprised her with kiss before throwing another tickle attack. A sudden roar from the orange pony’s stomach reminded the pair of their task. Sugarcube Corner.
As the couple entered the bakery, they were greeted with a warm welcome from a fuzzy pink party pony. “Hey Pinkie Pie” Sunset said coolly. Twilight hugged one of her closest friends tightly. “Where is everypony?” Pinkie jumped up and down excitedly, waving her hoof wildly at the table next to her.
Twilight smiled at her other friends- Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Rarity, and Fluttershy. “Hey girls! Where have you been all day?” Twilight questioned.
“We just wanted to give you two some alone time.” Rarity spoke knowingly.
“Hello Sunset Shimmer, dear!” she added. Pinkie came out of nowhere to take the girls’ order.
“We’ll have two hot cocoas and a batch of red velvet cupcakes” Sunset said after surveying the menu closely.
Suddenly Pinkie lit up. “I have an idea! Why don’t I make the happy couple one super-duper-hot-chocolate-marshmallow-milkshake?!” she gasped in delight.
Twilight laughed and sat down. “Sure thing Pinkie if Sunny’s all right with it”
Sunset gave a small nod. “Anything for you Sparky” Everyone laughed at the couple’s cheesy nicknames.
“Could I borrow your marefriend for a minute Twilight?” Rarity asked. Twilight raised her eyebrows. “Sure” Rarity grabbed Sunset’s hoof and pulled her into the small bathroom nearby.
“Alright darling! Rainbow and Applejack set up the gazebo and Pinkie and Fluttershy handled the flowers. Everything is ready, do you have the ring?” Sunset opened her saddlebag and took out the box.
“Perfect!” Rarity sang. “Thanks for the help Rarity” Sunset said nervously. “Anytime!” she said “and if you hurt Twilight I’ll kill you.” Rarity added cheerfully. Sunset gulped and nodded.
“Good luck!” Rarity said as Sunset left. Sunset arrived back at the table, where Twilight was drinking her milkshake alone. “Come on Sunset! I’m almost done and you won’t get any.” Twilight said playfully.
Sunset pouted. “No fair, Sparky!” Twilight giggled. She would never miss out on Pinkie Pie’s famous hot chocolate.
Sunset insisted that they go for a walk before coming back home, and Twilight couldn’t resist Sunset’s puppy dog eyes. There was a hill where Twilight loved to watch the sunset and suggested they go there. Sunset smiled. Everything is going according to the plan. She thought gleefully.
The view of Celestia lowering the sun to make way for Luna’s moon was clear from there. As they walked up the hill a beautiful gazebo came into view. The roof was covered in lilacs and roses and the pillars were decorated with purple and orange silk ribbons. The arrangement was covered in snow, shining brightly in the sun’s glow. Twilight’s eyes watered at the sight of the gazebo. Sunset led Twilight up the steps gently, looking at her with such love and passion that it left her breathless.
“On this snowy night two years ago, I found you sitting here alone watching the sunset. You looked so beautiful just sitting there peacefully. I felt it, a spark. Even before you showed me love, you showed me friendship. When I was shunned by everybody you helped me. I tried to kill you, for Celestia’s sake! You still showed me compassion, knowing that I could change and I did. Sometimes I feel like I don’t deserve you, but then you show me how much you love me and I want nothing more than to stay with you forever. Slowly I fell in love with you and I didn’t know what to do. Even then! Even then you stayed with me, supported me, and gave me a chance. I just ask one more thing of you, one more chance to show you how much you mean to me.” Sunset shook, and got down on one knee then levitated the velvet box in front of her.
“Twilight Sparkle will you marry me?” Sunset Shimmer asked with hope shining brightly in her eyes.
Now Twilight was really crying, happy tears ran down her cheeks. “Yes! YES! YES!!!!” Twilight cried. Sobbing, she grabbed her bride-to-be and kissed her passionately.
“I love you Sparky” Sunset said as they parted. Twilight nodded happily, still crying. “I-I love you too Sunny…”
And so, on one snowy night, Sunset Shimmer made a certain princess the happiest mare in the world.
