Chapters The sun has fallen and the moon has risen. Night has come, and every pony in Equestria is fast asleep in their warm cozy beds under the starry-night sky.
"SPIKE!"
Okay, maybe not EVERY pony is fast asleep.
In a town called Ponyville, there lives a unicorn mare by the name Twilight Sparkle (and her number one assistant, Spike the baby dragon), who lives in a library called "Golden Oaks". Twilight Sparkle, a very special mare indeed. How special? Well, she is Princess Celestia's faithful student, has saved Equestria a few times, recovered the "Elements of Harmony", and is also a great... oh wait, where was I... ah yes.
"Spike! Where's my "The Astronomical Astronomers Know about Stars and Comets" book!", Twilight screams.
On the second floor of the library, Twilight's going back and forth; from here to there, collecting supplies such as: ink bottles, quills, scrolls, a red-white blanket, daisy sandwiches, and her telescope. As always, Twilight has a list to make sure she has everything that she needs. "Check, check, check, and..." As she was checking off her list she notice something was missing. She looked around her, high to low, left to right, she couldn't find it. So she went down stairs. Yet she didn't seem to find it...her book.
While searching she yelled, "Spike did you burn another book?!" No answer. "Oh come on, come on, where are you!" she whispered to herself as she continued to look. She stopped and panicked, "What if I left it at Rarity's, o...or maybe I left it at Canterlot, or..." Twilight took a deep breath, and used her magic to bring her saddle bag and supplies towards her. "I can't just stay here and run around like crazy, I have to go before it's too late." she calmly said with a sad face.
As she was walking towards the door, Spike finally decided to show up. "Twilight," he yawned, "wait." Twilight turned around and saw Spike coming down the stairs slowly. As Spike walked down the stairs, Twilight noticed he was carrying a little blue blanket and... "Twilight, *yawn* it's right here." Spike yawned once more as he showed Twilight the book. "You found it!" Twilight piped as she grabbed Spike and twirled him around while cheering. "Oh thank you thank you thank you!" Once placed on the ground, Spike rubbed his little eyes and said, "Your welcome, and now if you'll excuse me *yawn* I'm going back to bed now".
Twilight still had a grin on her face, "Thank you Spike." she whispered. Now that she has the book, she levitated her list and a quill and put a check on a box that said "The Astronomical Astronomers Know about Stars and Comets" Book. She put the items in her saddle bag, and exited the library.
Twilight was running fast! Her heart was pumping, her breath was labored, and when she ran, it sounded like a dragons roar. Twilight's hooves were in pain; swollen and red. She could use magic and teleport there, but there are two problems. One; it's a far destination, and two; it could waste her energy and magic in a flash.
She continued to run until she reached up a hill. Twilight collapsed to the ground, she was out of breath. "I...made...it..." Twilight said as she gasped for air. She lay down for a while now, breathing in the fresh, cool, night air. Once Twilight was able to breath easily, she got up on all four hooves and turned to where she came from. She was up on a high hill, looking down at Ponyville. This hill was where Twilight and her friends came to watch the Meteor Shower. Twilight loves it when she spends time with her friends and while enjoying a pretty good show from Luna's night. Twilight still didn't understand why Luna would be so jealous of her sister and think that ponies would just ignore her night. Twilight could stay up all night and enjoy what Luna's night has to offer.
Twilight would have to go to bed at some point, but right now, she can stay up all night and watch the stars. Speaking of stars, Twilight needed to get her telescope ready pronto! She started unpacked everything, from her red-white blanket to the telescope. "I hope I'm not too late", Twilight said while adjusting her telescope. Twilight looked through the telescope eyepiece and pointed the telescope to a certain star. Using magic, Twilight levitated the book in front of her and started turning the pages. "Mira, Mira, Mira," Twilight said as she went through her book, "ah, here you are, page 148; Mira the Red Giant." Twilight looked back at her telescope and started to focus it on the star she found. Once focused, Twilight went back and forth from her book to her telescope to see if it was the right star. Indeed it was, she found Mira the Red Giant Star.
"If my calculations are correct, like every other star, Mira is getting ready to transform into a super-nova." Twilight confirmed. She looked away from her telescope, placed her book on the ground and got out a daisy sandwich from her saddle bag. Twilight lay down on her belly and started munching on her sandwich. It was so peaceful. Twilight can't remember the last time she took a break, for everyday was a busy day. There was Nightmare Moon, Winter Wrap Up, Celestia's Phoenix, Aloysius and Spike, Discord, Luna making friends, Cutie Pox, MMM Mystery, Cadence and the Wedding, Twilight could go on and on, yet she doesn't recall having a day of peace.
Stars seem to be the answer for Twilight. Once she finished her midnight snack, she got up and went back to her telescope. "You seem to have it easy, you just stay up there looking pretty...and that's it, while I have to stay here and help every ponies problems." Twilight huffed, She looked away from her telescope and looked straight at the star, "Sure, I do love to help others, but...sometimes I wish I could spend some more time with my friends. I know I'm with them every day, but I mean...can't we have some peace, like a day at the Spa or go out and eat or...I don't know. I just feel like something is missing, that my destiny may be more than friends, maybe something powerful. But what's more powerful than friendship? What..." Twilight shook her head, "I'm talking to myself again, this is just getting ridiculous."
Twilight went back to her telescope. Though something wasn't right. "That's strange...I don't recall readjusting my telescope to get a closer view..." Twilight was confused. The star was so big and bright that it blinded Twilight, she screamed as the light hit her eyes. It was so bright that Twilight looked away from her telescope and kept her eyes shut tight. Her eyes were in such pain that she could barely open them.
As she rubbed her eyes, she started to get a bit warm. That made no sense, it was cooler earlier, how did it just get warm all of a sudden? But then it got worse. It was so hot that Twilight had beads of water coming down her face. Once her eyes had recovered, she slowly opened them to see what was causing this heat. But right when she opened her eyes, she saw a red light. She looked up to see where this light was coming from.
Her eyes shrunk. She couldn't believe her eyes on what she saw. "Oh...my...Celestia...", she gasped.
Coming straight at her was a big, red, glowing ball of light! Twilight couldn't move until the light came closer that it almost made her blind again. The light in her eyes broke the trance, and Twilight was able to run away. She didn't want to leave her stuff, but that light was coming down so quickly Twilight didn't think she would have enough time to save them.
She was running away until she tripped and fell all the way to the bottom of the hill. She twisted her back-left foot when she fell. Twilight couldn't run anymore and the hot, red, burning ball of light was still coming. Twilight ducked for cover and hoped for the best. Her eyes shut tight as the ball of light finally hit the ground.
Twinkle Twinkle Little Filly
Silence. No sound at all.
Twilight was still on the ground, waiting for something to happen. She didn't know how long she lay there, but felt it was right about time she opened her eyes. "Come on Twilight, maybe it was just your imagination," Twilight mumbled. She opened her eyes. Nothing. She turned every direction, but nothing. Nothing but darkness, no light in sight. "See , there's no big red glowing orb coming to smash me". She got up on all four hooves and thought, "But then again I'm down here, and the thing I saw was..." she looked up at the hill, "That thing might still be up there."
Twilight thought maybe she could send a message to Princess Celestia, but then maybe, like she said earlier, it might have been her imagination. Twilight then decided it was time to go and investigate, to see what this glowing orb really is. She got up on all four and started walking up the hill.
Twilight was both curious and terrified. Curious about this strange glowing orb coming from the sky and terrified to find out what it is or what it could be. Once on top, she started to look around. Everything seemed to be the same. Her telescope, books, lunch, blanket...everything was in it's place. Except... at the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a hole in the ground. She didn't recall seeing a hole nearby. She walked towards the hole and noticed something strange about it. Even though she was two hooves away, she could see a red light coming from inside the hole. But that wasn't the only thing she noticed. "It looks like it's...burnt?", she said as she tilted her head in confusion.
Now closer, she was able to get a better look from below.
Twilight froze, "Something did come..."
"T-this can't be possible!"
There, at the bottom of the hole, was a little filly; a little earth pony. As strange as it sounds, this little filly looked like Twilight! The only difference is: it's a filly, she had a soft peachy coat (instead of lavender), has a long red mane with yellow and white highlights (instead of a dark blue mane and purple and pink highlights), and was glowing red..."It's glowing!" Twilight gasped.
This was too much. This filly not only looks like her (sort of), but it can glow!
Twilight had to think about this, this made no sense! "Wait," Twilight thought. "a giant red light that seems to have fallen from the sky, came crashing down, and now there is a small burnt hole in the ground that wasn't there before. Hm. Can it be...is it possible!? This filly is...
Twilight's thoughts were interrupted by a cry. A fillies cry. She shook her head and looked down the small burnt hole where the cry came from.
The red glow the filly once had, disappeared.
Twilight couldn't just stand there and do nothing, but what can she do. She's never taken care of a filly before, but she can't just leave this poor filly alone. The more the filly cried, the more heartbroken Twilight gets. She finally then used her magic and carefully carried the little filly out of the hole and slowly placing her onto Twilight's red-white blanket.
While using magic to carry the filly onto the fabric, not only did the filly stop crying, but the burnt hole in the ground was replaced with fresh grass. It was, as if it never happened. Twilight looked back at the filly and noticed this filly was not only sitting up right but was also starring at her with those dark blue eyes. Twilight finally got to see her eyes. When the filly stared at her, she didn't stare at her with a scared or strange stare, but with a curious "I want to know you stranger".
Twilight was then remembering the stories her parents told her when she was just a little filly. Twilight too did the same reaction when she first saw her parents. She was just curious.
Later, what felt like three minutes, the little filly finally spoke, "Me!" or in this case, tried to. The filly was trying to say something, but all Twilight could hear was "me". Twilight thought it was cute, a little filly trying to speak, but all you can hear is a cute little squeak or at least half of the word.
Twilight didn't know who's filly it was or how it got here, but thought it would be best to take her to the library and find her parents in the morning. Or in this case, when the sun rises.
She grabbed her saddle bag and placed all her materials inside while carrying the little filly on her back. Before she left she realized something was shaking on her back. She turned her head and noticed the poor filly was shaking. She took out her red-white blanket and covered the filly, keeping her nice and warm.
Twilight then headed back home with a sleepy filly on her back.
Twilight finally made it back home. It took awhile but what could she do, teleport? She was too exhausted to use her magic. She was up almost all night and had a shocking experience earlier. Twilight couldn't wait to go to bed. Before going inside the "Golden Oaks Library", Twilight turned and faced the moon. The moon was slowly setting. The sun will be coming up soon.
Owliscious was on his perch plucking his feathers, when suddenly he hears the door creek open. Twilight quietly entered the library and was soon greeted with a little "hoot" from her owl Owliscious. "Why hello there Owliscious," Twilight whispered as she closed the door behind her and placed her saddle bag down, "hope I didn't scare you." Owliscious flew off his perch and circled around Twilight. "You're curious aren't you?" "Hoot." "Well, you won't believe what I found," using magic, she levitated the little blanket from her back to the ground. As she placed the blanket down, it then slowly uncovered a little filly.
"Hoot?" "It was so strange?" Twilight replied. "I was looking through my telescope when all of a sudden, a big red ball of light came from nowhere!" Twilight paused when she heard herself talk loudly. "Maybe it's best if I tell you in the morning. Right now *yawn* I want a good night sleep, or in this case, a *yawn* good morning nap." she whispered as she picked up the filly with her magic and carefully walked up the stairs, with the filly, to her bedroom. Owliscious then flew back to his perch and continued his night watch.
Once in her bedroom, she gently placed the filly on her bed and covered her with a small, soft blue blanket. She turned to her right and saw Spike fast asleep. "Good, he's still asleep. I was afraid I woke him up." Twilight then got in bed. She was so tired that once she got in bed she fell fast asleep. Though for only a few seconds.
Twilight felt something warm cuddled up her chest. She opened her eyes to see what it was, and there she saw the little filly, cuddled up with her. Twilight was surprised, they barely know each other as it is. As Twilight looked at the filly, the more her heart broke. In her opinion, the filly looked cute. "Just for now, until I can find out who you belong to." Twilight then fell fast asleep.
How I Wonder What You Are
The sun rises, warm sunlight spreads all over Equestria, and Twilight was still fast asleep.
It was a Saturday, and Saturdays is when Twilight has free time to read books or do chores, not sleep in. But Twilight was so exhausted from last night. Twilight tried to wake herself up, she felt that there were important things to do. More important than sleeping. She then remembered that there were no plans today. Probably some reading but Twilight already read all the books in her library. She thought it was okay for her to sleep in, and so she did.
She was asleep for more than three hours, until she felt something fuzzy nudging her shoulder. She slowly opened her tired purple eyes and saw the little filly, smiling at her with those dark blue eyes of hers and shaking her tail wildly like a dogs'. Twilight smiled back and gave a big yawn as she sat up, "Alright, I'm up." She rubbed her eyes and then looked back at the filly. She noticed the filly had a lot of energy in her. Looks like this filly was up for a while now. "How long were you awake?' Twilight questioned the filly. The filly just looked back at her and giggled.
"Still can't talk huh? Well, it makes sense since you're about 3 years old." The filly then giggled once more.
"Alright. Now I need to find out who you belong to little..."
"Mira!" the filly chirped.
Twilight was speechless. Just yesterday, all the filly could say were just sounds. And now this filly just suddenly learned how to speak?
"Wait a minute," Twilight brought her head down to meet with the filly's eyes . "yesterday, you couldn't speak English. So I'm guessing, one; you were afraid to speak, or two; that is the only word you can say."
"Mira." the filly squeaked as she stretched her front hooves up towards Twilight.
Twilight grabbed the little filly and held her in her hooves. "Alright then. Hello little Mira."
Mira squeaked as Twilight held her close.
Twilight went down the stairs to her library and used her magic to levitated hundreds of books into the air. As she levitated the books, she looked through each one. "Where is it?" Twilight can't seem to find it. As she looked through the books, little Mira came down stairs. She looked through the books too, even though some were too high for her to reach.
Twilight kept searching and searching until little Mira nudged her. Twilight looked down at Mira and saw her with a book in her mouth. Twilight put all the books back into its place and levitated the book away from Mira and looked at the title. "Get to Know your Solar System. *gasp You found it!" Twilight beamed as she looked back at the little filly smiling at her. "Wait a minute," Twilight stared at the filly, "you know how to read?" Twilight asked curiously. Mira nodded.
Twilight blinked a few times, "What else do you do that I don't know about?" Mira point to the book Twilight levitated. "You know about space?" Mira tilted her head as if that wasn't all. Mira jumped towards the book Twilight levitated, but Mira couldn't reach. Twilight noticed Mira trying to get the book, so she brought it down to Mira. Once Mira had the book, she then flipped through the pages.
Twilight had a lot in her mind about this filly. This filly just makes no sense to her. Mira continued flipping the pages. She kept looking and looking until she stopped at page 53. Once Mira found the page she was looking for, she then pointed it to Twilight. Twilight looked down and started to read, "Cetus is a constellation. Its name refers to Cetus, a sea monster in Greek mythology, although it is often called 'the whale' today. Cetus is located in the region of the sky that contains other water-related constellations such as Aquarius, Pisces, and Eridanus." Twilight looked back at Mira. Twilight didn't know what this was all about but thought maybe it's best if she continued. "The most notable star in Cetus is Mira ("the Wonderful"), designated Omicron Ceti, the first variable star to be discovered and the prototype of its class. Its seeming appearance and disappearance gave it its common name, which means "the amazing one". Also..." before Twilight could finish, Mira took back the book.
"Mira what are you trying...to...show...me." Twilight noticed something in both the book and the filly. "The most notable star in Cetus is Mira." That echoed in Twilight. "Your Mira the star?" Twilight whispered. Mira jumped with joy.
It made sense; the big red ball of light, the strange burnt hole in the ground, a little filly that glowed. Mira must have fallen somehow and landed in Equestria. But that didn't explain that small hole, that star is a lot bigger than that. Unless when Mira came crashing down, she then shrank herself? Twilight was getting confused.
There was too much for her to handle. She felt weak. Twilight's eyes rolled back as she fell to the ground; she fainted. All Twilight could see now was darkness.
