A Hunter Amongst Ponies
Chapter Two: Return and Arrival
Previous ChapterNext ChapterTwilight Sparkle daughter of Twilight Velvet foals story writer and Night Light retired royal guard, sister to Shining Armor, personal student to princesses Celestia, and currently fighting for her life. She stood on her shaky hooves backing away slightly from the terrifying Nightmare Moon. The dark alicorn stood just about 5’10 not including her horn her black coat seeming to drink in the faint light of the moon making the shadows grow larger and even more frightening. Donned in her grey steel armor spikes extending out from her pauldrons, bracers, and knee plates making her look even more intimidating. Twilight meanwhile was clad in nothing more than a blue and purple plaid knee length skirt a white button up shirt and a black vest bearing her cutie mark to say she was woefully under prepared would be a laughable understatement. Eyeing the elements Twilight stopped her back pedaling and began pushing power into her horn and she charged the Nightmare. If I don’t stop her now Equestria..no all of Equis is doomed! Please Celestia let this work. Twilight felt her hooves impact the stone floor of the ruined castle her arms pumped as she tried to run as fast as she could to her target.
With a raised eyebrow and a deadpan expression the dark mare spoke sounding bored and insulted. “You’re kidding right?” Gritting her teeth in anger the alicorn charged toward the smaller unicorn her black halberd raised high in the air. “Then you shall die before you have a chance to enjoy our eternal night!!!!” The insane mare roared as she closed the distance swinging her weapon down aiming to cleave the younger mare’s head in half. In matter of nearly an instant Twilight and Nightmare both heard a faint whistling sound as she teleported behind the dark mare still running to the elements only to hear the mare scream in pain looking back over her shoulder she could see the Nightmare clutching her bleeding hand an arrow sticking out of it. The dark mare’s weapon hitting the ground with clang as she removed the arrow, caught completely off guard Nightmare quickly looked around the room trying to locate the source however her search quickly came to halt as the back of her left knee struck by another black arrow. She roared in pain as she quickly whipped her head around charging horn and firing a blast of magic knocking out the wall with an explosion. In the flash of light from the blast she couldn’t be sure but swore she seen a figure’s shadow and made another blast knocking out another wall.
Twilight in the mean time taking advantage of the distraction placed her hands on the elements and began charging her spell. Come on come on just a little spark please. Sensing Twilight’s magic Nightmare whipped around despite her injuries quickly teleporting beside the lavender unicorn. Incasing her in magic lifted the young pony into the air.
“You little fool you think can outwit Nightmare Moo AAARRGGHHHH!!!!!” The mare’s outburst cut short by another two arrows was fired from the shadows into her wings from behind and breaking her hold on Twilight. As the unicorn was released she notices a figure behind the Nightmare as the angry alicorn charge a much larger blast reaching out a hand to the figure Twilight cried. “LOOK OUT!!” The Nightmare could only grin even though she was going to blast out that wall anyway the unicorn gave away her compatriot’s location. Knowing with certainty where the archer now was she doubled the power of the spell determined to kill the one that had wounded her so. As she released the spell and it made its way to the target she just now noticed that somehow the arrows in her knee and wings had disappeared. Pushing that mystery aside as it wouldn’t in mere moments as the archer would soon be dead or so she thought. The figure leap from the shadows away from her spell’s impact point she couldn’t make out much of the figure only that it wore a hood and had the vague shape of a biped. However that was nearly an afterthought as she watched the figure with deft precision pull four arrows from its quiver the nock of each one expertly place between its fingers. As the arrow heads left the quiver they glowed as brightly as troches. She watched as if frozen the spell sailing past her intended target the archer readied each arrow as it drew its bow. With a fearful gasp she watched as the archer released the bowstring the arrows began flying toward her the horror in her chest increased as the four arrows had somehow become eight and struck her.
Nightmare’s spell impacted the wall and exploded creating a bright flash and dust cloud the force of the blast sent twilight and the archer flying backward Twilight nearly at the entrance to the room and the arch on the remain wall to the right of her. Twilight shaking herself briefly and holding her aching head she could see Nightmare Moon standing with her back toward her. The unicorn’s eyes were quickly drawn to the elements or rather where they were.
With a terror filled gasp Twilight spoke. “Gaahh the elements they’re…..” She couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence the elements of harmony had been scattered. Nightmare Moon weakly and slowly turned around cackling slightly the eight arrows that had went straight through her armor and lodged in her chest making breathing and movement difficult. As her blood flowed from her wound the arrows vanished with the arrows gone the blood flowed more freely quickly forming a puddle at her hooves.
With strained breath the Mare in the moon spoke. “You’ve…..failed…..you’ve both failed the elements are no more.” As she coughed she charged magic though her horn beginning to heal herself. “My eternal night begins NOOWWAAHHHGGGG!!!!!!” The alicrom screamed in pain as another eight glowing arrows quickly pierced her flesh and dropping her to her knees. Twilight quickly whipped her head around the source of the arrows. The archer was tall she noticed only slightly shorter than Celestia and wore a hood and was already reaching for more arrows. Even prone as she was Nightmare wasn’t going to go down that easily and fired multiple volleys of magic bolts at the arched forcing him to begin running and dodging. The elements may have been destroyed and while Twilight wasn’t a fighter she wasn’t going to let that archer fight Nightmare Moon all by its self she quickly stood back up on her hooves watching the archer dodge and weave around the volleys of magical bolts intent on killing it. As the unicorn began to charge a spell she heard a familiar voice with an unmistakable southern twang.
“The cavalry is here Twilight.” Applejack proudly proclaimed.
Twilight could feel a tear run down her furry cheek at how happy she was that her friend had come to help her. The archer had another arrow ready to fly as it dodges around the bolts of magic when the lavender bipedal unicorn shouted out.
“You think the elements of harmony can be destroyed just like that Nightmare Moon. Well you’re wrong because the spirits of those elements are right here”
The archer looked behind the unicorn to see five other colorful equines. Wondering where that mare might be going with this the arch let the arrow fly shattering the dark alicorn’s other knee making her drop to them as she cursed in pain. Despite the nightmare’s cry of pain the unicorn continued. As she spoke the splintered remains of the orbs gathered around the mares.
“Applejack who reassured me I would be safe represents the element of honesty! Fluttershy who tamed an angry beast with her compassion is the element of kindness! Pinkie Pie by giggling in the face of danger banished fear is the element of laughter!”
Nightmare moon raised her head and the archer could see a growing fear on her face. Since she hadn’t shown if the tiniest amount of fear since the battle began the archer started moving toward once of the nearby pillars seeking shelter from whatever was about to happen as Twilight continued.
“Rarity who brightened a sorrowful serpent with a meaningful gift is the element of generosity! And Rainbow Dash how could not abandon her friends for her heart’s desire is the element of loyalty! These five ponies got use threw every change you threw at us!”
The archer now safely behind a pillar raised an eyebrow gently muttering. “And what did you do to be this ballsy? What’s with these horses and talking so much in battle?”
The dark mare rose to her hooves once more thou with noticeable difficulty. “But you don’t have the sixth element you couldn’t make the spark so it doesn’t matter you die here!”
The lavender mare eyes her eyes as she spoke confidently. “You’re wrong there was a spark a spark from within.” She turned to face the other mares. “The spark I felt when they came to help me. The spark from when I came to understand that you five are my friends!” As she finished a bright light shined from above her head and surrounded her. “You see Nightmare Moon when the other elements are joined by that spark they create the sixth element the element of magic!”
The fragments of the elements came closer to their equine counterparts forming necklaces for the five newcomers and a tiara for Twilight. As they did the bright light increased Twilight open her eyes and they shined with power as twin rainbow shot out from the gathered mares arching its way to the bleeding Nightmare Moon screaming as the rainbow beam engulfed her. With a bright flash of light that the archer had to cover its eyes with an arm it was all over. While the ponies took notice of their new jewelry the archer walked over to where Nightmare mare had been standing. There lying on the grown it saw pale blue mare if the archer had to guess only slightly taller that the six present. She was suffering from the same wounds inflicted upon the dark alicorn. While not an expert in magic or what just happened the archer did know these wounds were mortal. At that point the sun began to rise as the archer put away the bow hearing a calm motherly voice speak to the mares. Ignoring what was happening and reaching into a pouch on its belt pulling out a tiny vial and cradled the mares head. She was shaking and cold from blood loss it could see the life fading from her eyes. Eyes that no longer held hate within them only fear and guilt something the archer knew well. Pulling the cork out of the vial the archer gently placed it to her lips whispering gently.
“Drink this it will save you.” The mare grabbing the archer’s hand swallowed the red liquid as that motherly voice came to attention.
“Now if only another will as..LUNA!!”
The archer quickly snapped around to see a bolt of magic launching straight at the two of them. Said bolt of magic coming a very pissed off white mare. In a split second decision the archer quickly scooped up the prone mare before it and threw her to the side several feet away landing with a pained thug the mare was out of harm’s way. The archer only had just enough time to bring its arms up to shield its self from the blast. The spell hit hard sending the archer skidding and smoking a few yards toward one of the blown out walls before the archer righted its self and began running into the nearby forest clearing the gorge with a mighty running leap and growling in frustration. The white alicorn quickly flew over to the smaller wounded mare seeing the shape she was in tears started pouring down her face.
“Luna my sister what did that thing do to you!?!”
The six mares behind the alicorn shouted at that little revelation. “Sister!”
Luna coughed softly slowly feeling her body starting to heal. “Sister… why did..thou..attack..my savoir?”
“Savoir? Luna that thing it..”
“Celestia!” Luna shouted as best she could in her state but already feeling her strength returning. “That archer…bought time..for the element bearers..to arrive and cleanse us.. as well as gave us this.” She weakly lifted the empty vial. “Whatever this medicine was it works quickly our strength is already returning and the bleeding has stopped.” Proving her point Luna reached to a puncture hole in her midnight blue dress and wiped away the blood the wound closing and healing before their very eyes. The element bears gathered around at this point and stared with wide eyed amazement.
“Luna the archer truly?…” Luna merely nodded in response. Celestia wilted at that the one that had saved her sister from cretin death she had lashed out at in over protective rage.
“Princess while it seems princess Luna is healing quickly I feel we should get her to a hospital.” Her faithful student pointed out. With a nod Celestia charged her horn and teleported them all to Ponyville medical. Leaving the castle of the royal pony sisters vacant expect for a single spider that had watched the exchanged between the sisters. Turning away in began crawling back up the wall preparing to relay what it saw to its master.
