Prologue
The shadows approached quickly from the south, west, and north. Twilight was standing on the roof of a nearby building, guiding the ponies of Ponyville safely out of town, and Applejack was at the train stop helping them on. Pinkie Pie was in a somber mood for once, but was doing her best to calm all of the other ponies. Rarity was helping mares find their lost little ones, and Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy were standing next to one of the houses.
“You go, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy was saying. “I’ll stay behind.”
“No, Fluttershy. I’m the only one who could catch up to the train in flight. I’ll stay and fend off the shadows.”
“Rainbow, I can’t let you. I just can’t.” Fluttershy sighed and looked down at the ground.
“Fluttershy, I can’t let you. I love you, Fluttershy, and you know that- I’m not leaving you behind.”
“Rainbow, if you love me as I love you, then you’ll trust me. I feel… something telling me to stay. A warm voice. Comfortable, familiar. It whispers to me- Stay, Fluttershy. You must. Rainbow, I know it might sound weird, but it sounds like… me. Like I’m telling myself to stay.”
“Fluttershy, I--”
“Shh, Rainbow,” the yellow mare interrupted. “I must. And we have no choice.”
“I-- we?”
“Yes. I literally can’t leave. I tried earlier. Something blocked my way out. And you,” she said, a tear dripping from her eye, “already have no choice.” She closed her eyes as she hit Rainbow Dash in the head, the tears flowing freely now. She ran off, crying, leaving Rainbow there for one of the others to find.
As she finally approached her cottage, she went under the bridge and into the water. She pushed on a stone in the water, and there was a rumble from the bridge itself. A door slid aside, revealing a stairway down to underneath her house. Fluttershy walked down, closing the door behind her, leaving her in total darkness. She walked forward until there was a sudden dim light to her left. It was a candle, which she picked up and used to light a nearby lantern. The lantern gave off enough light for her to see the walls, which were bare other than a single painting of the house.
Fluttershy swung the painting open, revealing a safe. She entered the combination-- 19-08-25. The door clicked and she pulled that open, too. Inside was a wooden recurve bow painted in black, an archer’s hoofguard, and a full quiver of arrows. Fluttershy sighed, the tears finally dried, and pulled them out. She hasn’t ever used these; they were a gift from her mother, to protect herself. Her mother was always like that- worried about everything. Fluttershy knew how to use one (and, in fact, had before), but she preferred not to use violence. She sighed again and slung the quiver over her shoulder, slipped on the guard, and slid the bow into the strap of the quiver. She blew out the lantern and walked outside.
She started towards the approaching shadows. There were very few ponies left behind, and most were on the last train out. Ignoring them, she pressed on. She spotted Rarity pulling Rainbow’s unconscious body onto the train, and she was grateful they had found her. She continued towards the approaching dark, only to have her path blocked by Pinkie Pie.
“Hey Fluttershy! Time to get on the train!” she smiled, trying to move Fluttershy towards the train.
“No Pinkie. I’m not going.”
“Aww, why not?”
“I need to stay.”
“Why?” Pinkie inquisitively tilted her head.
“I’m not sure… but I need to, so I will. Goodbye, Pinkie.” Fluttershy pushed past the pink mare, trotting towards the shadows.
“Is that a bow on your back?”
“Yes, Pinkie.”
“I thought you couldn’t use a bow?”
“I can, I just choose not to, unless the need calls for it.”
“Well, I’ll tell the others.”
“No, Pinkie. Don’t tell them.”
“Awww, why not?”
“Because it’s… it’s better if the others don’t know.”
“Okey dokey lokey! See ya Fluttershy!” The pink mare hopped off to the train, and Fluttershy continued into the abandoned town.
When she was finally alone near the shadows, she unslung her bow, notched an arrow, and drew back, aiming at the shadows.
“I know you’re there,” she said.
A voice, dark and smooth, responded to her.
“Of course, shy. We’re always here.”
“Come out.”
“Why wouldn’t we?” The voice walked out, and it was… her. Fluttershy’s darker, malevolent self. More walked out behind her, until there were a total of seven altogether.
“You know why we’re here.”
“You won’t get it.”
“Oh, I think we will.” She smirked and pulled out her own bow.
Fluttershy frowned and let her mane fall in front of her eye. She looked at the other her and drew the arrow back further. She loosed the arrow, the shaft flying towards the dark Fluttershy. Dark her giggled and faded into a shadow, rematerializing when the arrow passed by her. She ran up and hit Fluttershy in the head, causing Flutters to black out

Chapter One
Frozen Dreamer

Running. Nothing but running.
They wouldn't stop. Not for anything.
And she wouldn't stop trying to find her....
Fluttershy gasped, waking up. She was back in her room, lit by a single lantern on the floor. She slid out of bed and looked around. Nobody was there.
"Hello?" Fluttershy called out.
There was no response.
She started towards the door, stopping to stoop and slide the lantern onto her back. She continued walking to her door. She started to open it up when she saw a bluish white glow out of the corner of her eye. She turned around and spotted a young arctic blue unicorn mare, wearing slippers, leglets, and necklace that looked... familiar. The light Fluttershy saw seemed to be emanating from her.
"W-who are you?" Fluttershy asked.
"I'm Miranha," the unicorn replied in a soft, echoing voice.
"H-how did I get back here?"
"I used the last of my power to get you away from the darkness and bring you here."
"The--- the last of it?"
"Yes."
"Does that mean you're dying?"
"No," Miranha shook her head, and Fluttershy let out a breath. "I was already dead."
"So... why did you save me?"
"Because you are Equestria's only hope."
"Me?"
"Yes. The darkness threatens us all. Canterlot is the only known safe haven left."
"But... I'm still in Ponyville...."
"Yes. It is because that is where your journey begins. Take the lantern, and you will be safe. This is currently only a dream. I'll wake you up when my power returns-- and when you are ready." With that, Miranha started to fade away.
"W-wait! Before you go, tell me- are my friends okay?"
"Yes. But they worry for you, Fluttershy of Ponyville. Make sure you stay safe, for them. And especially for sister...."
"Si--sister?"
But at that point, she was gone.
Fluttershy sighed and shifted the lantern. She moved to the door and pushed it open, stepping out into the cold, dark hallway.
