Nightmare Moon returned. She won. After banishing Celestia into the sun, she cast the world into eternal night. Anybody who refused to follow her was trapped inside their own nightmares forever.

That would have been the end of it. Until one pony found a crack in his cell, and escaped into the realm of dreams. Under layers and layers, he created a home for ponies in the realm of dreams.
