Chapter 1: So You Think You Can be a Siren?
Chapter 1
“Are you sure a party like this is a good idea?”
“Yes, I’m absolutely sure, dad! After all, what could possibly go wrong?”
Those were the words that repeated over and over in my head as I drifted into consciousness. My father’s warning against throwing a party like I did, even though it was just our own family. Still, though, from the headache I seemed to have this morning, I admitted he was at least a little right.
I groaned, rolling onto my side. Even without the late night in, yesterday was an eventful day; I had done all sorts of work. It was also the last exam I needed to do before graduating school. Needless to say, staying up all night to celebrate afterwards didn’t exactly contribute to the experience.
I rubbed my head, trying to alleviate some of the pain. It worked, if only a little; I still had a searing headache, but now, at least, my head didn’t ache on the outside. Still, I was a bit jealous of those people who could stay up all night with nearly no repercussions. I usually wore a silly smile on my face before going to sleep, but then I dropped like a rock.
I tried to drift off back to sleep, but it was difficult; like trying to catch a butterfly in the wind. Finally, I gave up, slumping. “I guess that I should get up now,” I grumbled, twisting around to face the edge of the bed. For a few moments there, I was sure that something was off about my voice. But I dismissed it as being tired. Boy, was I in for a surprise an indeterminate amount of time later.
My eyes still felt tired, so I yawned, stretching my arms upwards to rid them of any aches. Blinking a couple of times before fully opening my eyes, I stood up, my bare feet slapping against the tiles. That was around the point where I had a double-take, looking down at the ground beneath my feet.
You see, where I lived, we didn’t put tiles in the bedrooms. Hell, I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually been in a tiled bedroom. Well, before that day, at least. So when my feet met cold tiles, it felt just the tiniest bit suspicious. I was more worried that someone might have kidnapped me, though, rather than the fact that there were now tiles in my bedroom.
This was the point where I first realised that something odd had happened to me, mostly because the foot that I looked under had blue skin – a light blue, maybe a shade of green, but mostly, what interested me about it was not the shade of blue it had become, but the fact that it had become blue. It looked like real human skin, too. Not cartoonish, as you would expect it to look, but real, with all the pockmarks and ridges that where characteristic of a human’s foot.
As you can probably guess, this is the part where I screamed. I may have also said ‘Ay Carumba!’ but I’m not exactly sure about that. Still, I screamed.
Someone had kidnapped me, put me in this tiled place (heh, tiled), and had now painted my skin a shade of blue, as far as I knew. Who wouldn’t scream when something like that had happened to you? Or at least freak out one way or another? That’s right, I thought so. Because you would be lying to yourself if you said no, wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t you?!
…Sorry about that.
Still, I clapped my hand over my mouth after screaming for a few seconds. It really wasn’t the best idea, after all, to do that; if I did, my kidnapper would probably have noticed me.
But after thinking about the scenario that I had posited mentally for a second, I turned as I slowly pulled my hand, which was also blue because of reasons, off my mouth, looking at the bed I had awoken in.
It was right next to a wall, and looked like it was comfortable; on the blanket, there were song-note prints, and the pillow was a heart-shaped pillow with a standard pillow underneath it. This was actually fairly odd; why would a kidnapper have a bed for me like that? Would they want me to have Stockholm’s Syndrome? The wall was covered in pictures of all sorts of bands, from Pink Floyd to One Direction, although all of them had oddly coloured skin, plus an advertisement poster or two of Taco Bell. That was also odd; as far as I knew, I wasn’t in America, and Taco Bell was primarily an American franchise. I may have been wrong, though, but I was preeetty sure that it was American.
Aaaanyway, disregarding whether or not Taco Bell is American (I’m willing to bet it absolutely is, by the way), why would there be advertisements and posters on the wall of a kidnapping room? I didn’t think that a kidnapper would want to play Justin Bieber songs to you over and over again just to make you obsessed and turn you into a Belieber. No, this seemed more like a teenage girl’s room than a potential kidnapper’s room.
I smiled, pleased with my conclusion. “Well, that was a good conclusion to come to and oh my god what the hell is wrong with my voice!” My face barely twitched from the smile, and I had retained the same tone throughout that sentence. Still, though, something was wrong about my voice. It sounded like…
Holding my hands up to my chest, they hit something soft and squishy. I blinked, my face turning blank. Then I squeezed.
Huh. That felt… odd, but oddly nice. I squeezed again, just to make sure my guess was correct, and the same odd, yet pleasant, feeling raced through my body.
“…A girl’s voice?” I asked myself blandly. I looked down at myself. I was wearing a pair of pyjamas, with little music notes and hearts spattered all over them, and an odd necklace with a ruby or something on the end of it. More importantly, I had… well, what’s the best way to put this? Milkshake makers, knockers, hooters, etcetera etcetera, on my chest. I did the only thing that I could do when seeing them.
I plastered an enormous smile on my face. “This is gonna be awesome,” I said, putting my hands on my hips and standing tall. There was just one problem with this, though.
That one problem was that I had no idea who I was.
Now, if you think that sentence makes no damn sense, then don’t worry; you’re not the only one. I mean, how could you have no idea who you are when you are who you are? Or, as a wise, venerable old man (read: Popeye) once said: “Iyam what Iyam.”
The problem, though, was that while I knew who I was before, I didn’t know who the original owner of this body was. Why did I think that this body belonged to someone else? Well, let me explain:
Firstly, the obvious one: Breasts. While I had always wanted them, I had never actually had any. But this body had them.
Secondly, the skin colour, which was blue. Blue skin = Smurf, Avatar, or Equestria Girl. I was not an Avatar, Smurf, or Equestria Girl before this… Well, as far as I knew at least. But now I was, and suddenly changing species is not something that normally happens outside of dumb movies like Gremlins 2… which I actually liked, so screw you; that was not a bad movie.
Thirdly, though, was the most important one. This place, my clothes, my odd necklace; none of them belonged to me. Especially not the Taco Bell posters; I shuddered at the thought of actually eating a Taco. The very idea sickened me. I mean, they were just too crunchy, and the way they tasted was odd mixed together, and…
Well, let’s just say that I ate way too many tacos in a row a while back, as well as Wraps.
Putting my irrational hatred of Mexican food behind me, though, I needed to find out where, and more importantly, who I was. It wasn’t going to be very easy to do that, though, especially given my tendency to go on tangents during my thoughts. Like one time, I was thinking about Metal Gear, and then I thought about Asura’s Wrath comparing it to Metal Gear Rising, then I thought about how awesome Asura’s Wrath was, then I thought about how much like Gurren Lagann it was-
…Oh. Sorry. Still kind of forgot what I was talking about there for a minute
Anyway, how was I supposed to find out who I was, if that was the case? Well, I had some idea of where to start… First, I had to find out if I had any identification card. I turned around to survey the room. It was a pretty desolate room; the only notable things were in 2 corners, each about 5 meters away from the bed, and directly in front of me. One of these two objects was a drawer, while the other was a rather large wooden clothing wardrobe. Suddenly, something caught my eye as I looked drawer, which was on the right side off the room from me; something on the wall.
“What’s that…?” I muttered, looking over towards the object. When I saw it a little more, my eyes widened as I continued to turn. I already had a pretty good idea of what it was; there was a sliding glass door, seemingly without a lock on it, and a few meters past the door, I saw a shower with a heavy curtain on it. A wide smile came onto my face. “Perfect…” I rubbed my hands together in glee. Finally, I could find out who I was!
As in, what species I was. I wasn’t under any illusions that I would be a fictional character.
…that is to say, I knew that I probably wasn’t a fictional character. But hey, it could happen! If you believe in magic, in a young girl’s heart…
Eheheh, sorry, sorry… I’ll get back to the story, then. So you see, that was the point where everything started to come together. I had pieced together at least a bit of my current body’s situation: She was fairly wealthy before I took over. A short pang of guilt came up at that moment, but I quashed it; there was no reason to feel guilty about something that was my fault. She also liked music to some degree. So now all that was left was to see my new face. And maybe an ID card, if she had one.
Walking over towards the bathroom while noting that my balance was a lot better than usual (I usually tripped in one way or another at least once a week, and felt a little unbalanced anyways; right now I felt like I was able to walk without even tripping once), I gave a sigh. I just hoped that there was no-one who was here to hate me for taking over their friend’s body. Even though it explicitly was not my fault. I reached towards the door, moving to slide it open, when it slid open on its own.
That… was preeetty cool. I mean, imagine if you had a sliding door for every door. Wouldn’t you find it cool, too? I was wearing a silly grin myself as it slid open. Soon, it had opened fully, and I stepped into the bathroom.
The first thing I noticed about it was how… modern it looked. It looked like the pinnacle of modernity, in fact. I mean, there were things there which looked like they wouldn’t look out of place in a science museum’s modern science exhibit. Oh, by the way, by ‘modern’, I mean ‘top of the line modern’, not ordinary modern. That’s kinda important.
Aaanyway, my jaw dropped. “Wow…” I was almost speechless. Almost. That meant I was about to launch into a slightlly lame-sounding tirade. “This looks like it could be a bathroom of the future!” I continued, my voice tinged with excitement. “I mean, there are so many things here that can be used now and are rare, but will be more common in the future, and I’m so excited that I can see these things, it’s awesome!”
As you can see, I have a tendency to babble.
There was the toilet that washed your ass after flushing by pressing a button, motion-sensor based taps and soap dispensers, a cupboard that used a pin code, and last but not least, the mirror.
When I looked at the mirror, my face grew blank again. I needed to look into it, and see what I looked like. I needed to, and there was nothing that could stop me.
I closed my eyes and breathed in. Then I breathed out.
And I opened my eyes.
What I saw in front of me… well, I’m not exactly sure how to describe it, but I just knew who I was. It was like it was just meant to be.
I had seen the face, the eyes, the long blue ponytail, and instantly known that the body that I was in belonged to one siren, Sonata Dusk.
I gave a short grin. “Well, I don’t feel guilty anymore,” I quipped. After all, she was kind of, well, evil.
Ditzy evil, maybe, but still evil.
I held up my hand to my face, feeling it. It felt… soft. And nicer than my previous face, at least.
Still, though, there was one thing I needed to worry about. Or more specifically, 2 things: The other two sirens, Adagio and Aria. I shrugged, then noted how it looked on my slender frame in the mirror. I could just attack them… but that would be a pretty bad idea, because A) it would be 2 against 1, and second, I didn’t know how to use my ‘Supah Siren Powerz!™’. These two things put together kind of prevented me from taking any action against them.
Then, for a bit, I considered the reality of this situation. Was it a dream? It seemed like a dream, given that humans don’t usually have blue skin, and people usually don’t change bodies overnight… Well, it was a dream, then; that was settled.
A smile grew on my face until it was so big, a shark would be scared by it because it would be bigger than the shark’s smile. I would act as Sonata and wait until the time was right, and then, I would betray the sirens and join the side of friendship!
“Muahahahaha… MUAHAHAHAaaghshck-” I sputtered, coughing. Something had caught in my throat. I coughed and hacked for a few seconds, before finally dislodging it and coughing it up. It looked like some sort of… I’m not exactly how to describe it.
Still, I could see nothing that could go wrong with this plan. Absotively, posolutely nothing.
Yeah, I just made up the words Absotively and Posolutely. Because I can.
