Cold and Alone
Home away from home
Previous ChapterAqua awoke the next morning with a warm coat, thanks to her campfire, and an angry stomach. She'd only had a single apple in the past twelve hours. She knew that she'd have to find food if she was to survive. She no knowledge of farming, but figured it couldn't be too difficult with some common sense. She started the day off with melting some snow, knowing she'd die of dehydration way before lack of food. With some water in her system, the mare went outside to find a reasonable source of food.
The weather favored the bat this morning. The wind was almost nonexistent, and the skies were beautiful and clear. She began her food search in the area around her current residence. When she found nothing within eyeshot, she walked off in the direction away from what once was the bottom of her ship, making sure to keep within eyeshot. As she crested the hill she had climbed, she noticed something peculiar: a small, blue flower. It looked like a kind of lily at first glance. When she bent down to sniff it, her senses were overwhelmed with the sweetest scent ever to have entered her nostrils. The smell tempted her, causing her stomach to basically yell at her. It quickly got to be too much, and the flower was soon nearly devoured. The center (Known as an Ovule) was hard as a rock, and, figuring it to be inedible, Aqua spat it out before she could start attempting to swallow it.
Upon closer inspection, the mare figured the ovule of the flower was the seed. She nearly exploded with excitement at the thought. If no delayed side effects popped up, and her assumption about what the seed really is turns out to be true, she'd have a decent source of food. She'd need to eventually expand her choices, but this'd be good for right now.
She ate a couple more flowers and took the ovules. Back at the shelter, Aqua set to work making it feel more like a home than the ruined bow of an airship. Given what she currently has at her disposal, she couldn't change much. In fact, all she really managed to make was an elevated bed. The whole project took a few hours, ending with the not so fun task of attaching it to the ceiling, but she eventually managed. She didn't have anything with which to make a blanket, but she wasn't about to let that get her down.
She lit a fire then set to taking the chest apart. Once she had all the metal pieces, she attempted to make them soft and malleable. The heat from such a simple fire, however, did not help her in that regard. In fact, all it did was cause her to burn herself. Frustrated, she set the metal off to the side for later.
"Should've known that wouldn't work," She growled to herself.
She wanted to make a hanging fire pit, but that obviously wasn't going to happen. Instead, she opted to put together as good a door as she could. She'd need a way to keep the heat from her fire pit inside her shelter, after all. What she ended up creating was a very crude looking slab of oak planks. She had to improvise to make it work, but she made do. After about an hour and a half, the broken bow now had a door to help keep out the elements, and keep the heat inside. After admiring her work for a little while, Aqua cleared out the snow so she could walk around without her hooves growing numb.
"Well, it's not much, but at least it's something," Aqua said, laying down on her side to enjoy the semi-soft ground.
