Grey feathers were billowing out in a flurry amongst the strong winds and lashing rain.
A helpless mare was being tossed about like a rag-doll amongst it all. The rain grew heavier and the wind stronger, as she began to lose all control. Her wings, which were the only things keeping her from hitting the ground were on the verge of giving up. She was tired, sore and helpless, but she wanted to go, she wanted to persevere, but that was just too much for her wings which numbed and lost their power and effort. This sent the mare hurtling towards the ground. A trail of letters flew out from her brown messenger bag. She shut her eyes and hoped for the safety.
"Hey, Derpy!"
An orange coloured mare called out, running across the post office to the entrance where the cross-eyed pony was about to leave. She was holding letters in her mouth.
"You nearly forgot your mail!"
"Oh? But, I delivered it."
The mare replied a silly grin on her face.
"No, no. Your.. Mail."
The orange pony put an emphasis on "Your" and leaned in slightly. She then placed the mail on the ground infront of her.
Derpy looked like she processing this for a moment.
"Oh. Heh. Right."
She picked it up and opened her messenger bag, sliding it into a side compartment.
"Thanks, Flame Wing!"
Her grin was infectious, and the orange pony couldn't help but mimic it.
"I'll see you tomorrow Derpy, have a good day!"
"You too."
Derpy opened the main door and stepped out into the shining sun. It was a gorgeous day, the sun shining, a light warm breeze drifting by, which made the lush green landscape look magnificent.
The mare stretched her wings for a moment, letting every feather out to feel the whisk of the soft breeze. The wings retracted and stretched again, this time it was followed by a gentle flapping motion, which grew stronger with each whoosh of the wings. The wings had quite some strength which allowed Derpy to lift off the ground and begin her flight.
She took it easy, lazily hovering over the city in the clouds known as Cloudsdale. She flew over the town-hall and began descending lower, beneath the clouds. As she did so, she saw squadrons of weather pegasi fly off the east, and another squadron fly off to the west. She smiled, reminiscing of how she always dreamt of being a weather pony when she was a filly. Oh the excitement.. The wonder, and fun of it all, she thought. Unfortunately, due to her eyes, she was unable to qualify and meet the standards for the team. She was devastated at the time, but got over it, she knew the mail-delivery service was her true calling, and she loved every moment of it.
She got so caught up in her nostalgia, that she was unaware of how close to the ground she was, and before she knew it, she had gone face first into the side of a house, where the sound had caused a very angry looking pony to run to the window.
"Hey! Some of us have night-shifts you know!"
A blue pony shouted. He was wearing a night cap and had bags under his eyes.
"S-Sorry!"
Derpy blushed with embarrassment and flew off. Soon after, she placed her hooves on the ground and relaxed her wings. She begin a slow walk to the town bakery; SugarCube Corner.
As always, a loud, excitable pink pony was greeting her as she stepped in.
"Hiya, Derpy! How are you? Good? Good. Let me guess! Cupca- No. Wait. Muffins as usual?"
She gleamed, and hoped on the spot.
"That's it, Pinkie Pie! Could I get five today? Ditzy is bringing a friend over to the house later"
Derpy walked towards the counter. The bombardment of questions had finished before she had fully entered the shop.
"No problemo!"
The pink pony rushed into the back room.
Derpy waited, and looked about at the ponies who were sitting at the tables, enjoying their food. Two ponies sat beside a window to the left of the room. They were staring at each, as if lost in a trance.
One of them was a caramel coloured stallion with a brown mane, another was a light blue mare with a low yellow mane.
Derpy watched as they leaned in and shared a kiss, she smiled lightly to herself and sighed softly before turning back to the counter where Pinkie had sprung out with a brown bag.
"5 Muffins lightly sprinkled in caster sugar, ready to go! That'll be seven bits please!"
Ten bits landed on the counter.
"Thanks Pinkie, keep the change."
"Okie dokie lokie! Thanks Miss. Derpy!"
Pinkie waved, place the bits in a container on a shelf beneath the counter.
Derpy took one last glance at the two ponies who had kissed, they were sharing a bite of a rainbow coloured cupcake, still staring deep into each other's eyes. The bell rang as she stepped out and closed the door.
Like earlier, her wings flapped open and lifted her upwards. Unlike earlier, there was a growing breeze, not too strong, but it was still noticeable. A few clouds had also come into view, some blocking the sunlight slightly.
She had to make one more stop before heading home. The school.
A light purple filly was kicking a stone about. She had a slightly disappointed look on her face.
"Hey, Sweetie, how was yo-"
Derpy spoke happily at first, and quite loudly but quietened when she saw her filly's face.
"S-Sweetie? You okay?"
She gently landed beside her and trotted over.
"... Feather's can't come over.."
The filly's voice was low.
"How come?"
Derpy leaned in closer to her.
"... Diamond Tiara asked him to go to her house... I asked first!"
She stomped the ground angrily.
"N'aw, Sweetie, I'm sorry.. Maybe he'll come over another time.
"No! I don't want him to come over at all!"
"Sweetie.."
"No, Mom.. I don't care anymore.. I just want to go home."
"I'm sure he had his reasons.. But hey.. I have an extra muffin for you.."
Derpy took the brown bag out from her messenger bag and dangled it infront of the filly's nose.
"C'moooooon, Dinky.. The muffins.."
Derpy teased her, letting the smell whisk about in the air.
A single drop of rain fell onto the ground, as clouds rolled out overhead.
".. I don't want it.. I just want to go home.."
The filly spoke coldly.
"Oh.. wel-"
"Miss. Derpy! Could I have a word with you?"
Cheerilee, the school teacher was standing in the doorway of the entrance to the school.
"Oh, of course."
Derpy replied.
She turned to Dinky and gave her the bag.
"Looks like it is about to rain, I want you to go straight home. Got it?"
Dinky nodded slowly and began trotting away, as the amount of rain steadily grew.
Derpy turned back to Cheeriliee and stepped inside the school.
"So, what is it, Miss. Cheerilee?"
"Well.. It's Dinky, she and another filly had a bit of a falling out today."
"She did? That's not like her."
"Mhm. There was no real harm done, but she was quite upset and crying about it afterwards. I asked her what had happened and why the row arose, but I got no answer from her. When I asked the other filly, she said that Dinky was being a, excuse me, "A stupid, annoying blank flank."
Derpy went quiet for a moment.
"Fillies can be so cruel to one another sometimes."
She spoke, adjusting her messenger bag.
"Yes.. Now, I have dealt with Diamond Tiara, and she has received a punishment for it. I just felt it would be best to notify you. Perhaps you could talk to your daughter and see what happened."
"I'll do that, yes. Thank you Miss. Cheerilee."
"No problem, Miss. Derpy."
Derpy turned and walked outside, where the light rain had almost exploded into a full-on storm. Trees were blowing about and branches breaking off. A few items were being tossed about in the storm, and Derpy's mane was being thrown about on her head. She opened her wings and prepared for a bumpy flight.
