Trixie finished unloading the items from the cart into the living room space. Her bags, the two large, coffin-shaped boxes, and the metal slats. She pulled some garments from one of her bags. She donned a large pointy hat, adorned with stars and a matching cape. She unfolded the legs on the bottom of the large boxes, propping them up to waist level. Twilight watched all of this with a studious gaze.

Watching the items being unpacked that is, not the pony unpacking them, of course. That would be silly. Why would she have any reason to watch those toned muscles ripple beneath her supple, azure flank, each time she bent over to unpack. There was no reason at all. Twilight found herself salivating. It was close to dinner time after all. She must have been hungrier than she thought. Yeah, that was it.

"I'm going to make something for dinner," Twilight said as she headed into the kitchen, "do you want anything?"

"The Great and Powerful Trixie is positively famished!" she said, defaulting to her third person speech. "She will take the finest Canterlot cuisine you have!" Twilight poked her head into the refrigerator.

"She'll be eating her words if she doesn't knock that off!" she called out. "All we've got is bread, enough daisies for maybe... one sandwich, and some frozen hay fries." Twilight frowned. "I guess my folks weren't planning on entertaining this weekend."

"AHHHHHH!" Trixie screamed from the other room, followed by another yelling voice.

"Who the hell are you! What are you doing in my house!" Twilight recognized the voice of her brother, Shining Armor. She ran back into the living room. Her brother had picked up a chair with his magic, threatening the blue intruder. Trixie meanwhile was likewise shielding herself with the coffee table levitated in front of her.

"Shining! Wait!" Twilight yelled as she ran in. Shining looked to her.

"Is she with you?" he asked.

"YES!" the two mares answered in unison.

"Oh," he blushed, setting the chair down gently. "I'm sorry." Trixie also placed the coffee table back on the floor. "It was an honest mistake. I wasn't expecting there to be guests."

"That's quite alright Mr... Shining was it?" Trixie looked to Twilight. "Well Twilight, aren't you going to introduce us?" Twilight rolled her eyes.

"This is Shining Armor, my brother. Shining, this is Trixie. She's one of my classmates."

"Twilight's brother!" Trixie said with a gleam in her eye. "Twilight, you never told me that your brother was so... handsome." Shining blushed harder.

"I never told you I had a brother at all." Twilight muttered.

"Well, it's so good to finally see Twilight making some friends, Mrs. Trixie." Shining said.

"She's not my-"

"Miss Trixie" she corrected, cutting Twilight off.

"Oh for pony's sake..." Twilight grumbled.

"I'm sorry, Miss Trixie." He looked at Twilight. "Um, where's Mom and Dad?"

"They're on vacation this weekend," she said. Shining smacked his forehead with his hoof.

"That's right! I forgot. Their trip to Neighagara!" he said.

"What about you? What are you doing home?"

"I'm on leave from the guard for the holiday. Thought I'd come home for a visit. I wasn't expecting... sorry about that again."

"No harm done." Trixie said.

"Oh, are you two hungry?" he asked, retrieving the box he'd dropped at the door. "I brought takeout pizza to share with Mom and Dad, but since they're not here..."

"You are Trixie's new, favorite pony!" Trixie said taking the box and greedily helping herself. Shining gave Twilight a sideways look.

"Yeah. She's always like that."

"So what have you got going on here?" Shining asked as he eyed the equipment filling the floor space of the living room.

"Trshshy ish gummminm tuh perfffrm mergisch!" Trixie tried to say with her mouth full.

"Trixie is going to 'perform magic'," Twilight translated, making little air quotes with her hooves.

"Sheee ISSSH!" Trixie retorted to Twilight sarcasm.

"Can I watch?" Shining asked. Trixie swallowed what she was chewing, deigning to grace them with her voice in absence of sputtering bits of food in the process.

"Of course! Be prepared to be amazed, for the Great and Powerful Trixie to perform the most fantastic feats of magic ever witnessed by pony eyes!"

"And I'm going to... help." Twilight reluctantly added.

"But of course! Every great magician requires the assistance of an able sidekick!" Trixie said.

"Ooh, exciting!" Shining said, taking a seat on the couch and eating the one remaining slice of pizza.

"Wait, how am I the sidekick?" Neither of them heard her. Shining was enraptured by Trixie, already starting her warm-up act. She teleported a bouquet of flowers from her bag to her hooves, seemingly making them 'appear' out of thin air. Shining didn't see past the simple ruse, clapping his hooves like a innocent foal. Twilight saw the empty pizza box. "What am I going to eat?"

"There is bread, enough daisies for at least one sandwich, and some frozen hay fries." Trixie recited from earlier.

"How gracious of you." Twilight deadpanned. Twilight made herself a simple sandwich and put the hay fries in the oven on a timer. It wasn't much, but it would be enough for tonight until she could go to the market tomorrow. She ate the sandwich and walked back into the living room. "So Trixie, what was it that you needed help with?"

The living room was empty. Twilight could hear noise from upstairs and went up to see what was going on. Trixie was walking through the upstairs hall, peeking into each room.

"Where will Trixie be sleeping tonight?" Trixie asked.

"We don't really have a guest room. I guess you could sleep on the cou-"

"Trixie saw a spacious king-size bed at the end of the hall that would suit her fine."

"Absolutely not! That's my parents room. And I want it exactly as they left it." Twilight said. Trixie walked down the hallway and looked into the next bedroom. "No. That's mine," Twilight said, "And I intend to use it."

"She can sleep in my bed."

"Shining!" Twilight was aghast at his implication.

"I mean, while I sleep on the couch," he said, "I don't mind sharing."

"Mmm, Trixie doesn't mind sharing either," she purred, flicking him with her tail.

"TRIXIE!" Twilight fumed at her so overtly flirting with her brother. Trixie trotted downstairs to carry on the show. Twilight glared at Shining as they followed after.

"What? I'm just trying to be a good lodger," he said, "I didn't see you offering your bed to your friend."

"She's not my-"

"For the Great and Powerful Trixie's final feat of magical wonderment, she will require a volunteer from the audience!" Sitting back on the couch, Shining raised his hoof immediately, holding it with his other, and waving it back and forth like a spastic foal.

"Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me, Trixie! Trixieeeee! Pick meeee!" Shining said. The competition for the most annoying pony in the room suddenly became a close race. Twilight stood silently beside him, debating whether or not knock them both unconscious and call it a night. Trixie played it up, squinting her eyes into the 'audience', scanning back and forth.

"Hmmm, how about, YOU!" she said, pointing at Twilight.

"AWGH!" Shining groaned loudly. "Lucky!"

"Yes. Lucky me." Twilight deadpanned.

"It's true, my enthusiastic little admirer! She is lucky! Now step right up!" Twilight took barely a full step forward.

"Whoa!" Twilight gasped as Trixie lifted her into the air above one of the large, open boxes.

"Uh, Trixie, what kind of a trick is this?" Twilight asked.

"Please! Tricks are something that a WHORSE does! Trixie performs magical FEATS of illusion!"

"What kind of 'feat' is this?" she asked again. Trixie lowered her into the box and closed it. Twilight's head was sticking out of the hole at one end, and her hooves hung out of the other.

"For Trixie's final illusion, she will CUT A PONY IN HALF!" Trixie brandished a comically-large wood saw. Twilight's eyes went wide. Trixie brought the saw to the seam in the box. Twilight screamed in terror. Trixie stopped and rubbed the bridge of her nose. "It's an Illusion! An illuuuuuuuusion! The saw is just for show." Twilight sighed when Trixie put the saw down. She, instead, picked up a large metal slat, and before Twilight could even react, slammed it down into the seam of the box, clearly bisecting the space Twilight's body was occupying.

But Twilight felt nothing. No pain. Whatever sort of 'illusion' this was, it clearly worked. It must have been a trick slat or something, Twilight decided. Trixie took her magic wand from her bag and tapped the box with it.

"PRESTO, CHANGE-O, REARRANGE-O!" she said theatrically. And then, she pulled the two halves of the box apart. Twilight couldn't tell what was happening, but the look on her brother's face had her concerned. Trixie had gotten him to somehow turn a whiter shade of pale. It wasn't until Trixie brought the other half of the box around and showed Twilight her own legs hanging out with no upper half. Twilight kicked her hoof. The detached leg in the other box moved.

"AHHHHHHH!" Twilight screamed. Trixie smirked, clearly pleased with herself that she was able to impress Celestia's prized pupil.

"It's magic, Twilight! You're fine!" Trixie tried to reassure her.

"How are you doing this!?" Twilight screamed. "You barely passed magic kindergarten! And that was only because you cheated! Put me back together! Now!"

"In due time, my little bookworm." Trixie said.

"ME NEXT! ME NEXT!" Shining was practically hopping up and down.

"Of course! Come right up!" Trixie said, opening the other box.

"Why do you even have two?" Twilight asked.

"It was buy one, get one... HALF OFF." Trixie said with a grin.

"Ah ha! I get that! I get that joke!" Shining said as Trixie levitated him into the other box. "That is good, you should totally use that."

"I just did," she said putting the metal slat through the other box. Twilight cringed. It looked very convincing from the outside.. Trixie tapped the other box with her wand.

"PRESTO, CHANGE-O, REARRANGE-O!" she said theatrically. And then, she pulled the two halves of the box apart, pushing Shining's upper half beside Twilight's. Shining lacked any visible fear, despite what he'd just seen happen to Twilight. He just had that goofy grin that he usually wore when they'd go on carnival rides. He looked over at her, beside him.

"Isn't this exciting?" he asked.

"Yeah, it actually is." Twilight said nervously. This was beyond mere illusion. This was actual alteration magic. Twilight had only studied it in theory. They were still at least a year from practicing it in school. How could Trixie possibly know how to do this? "Um, Trixie, could you please put us together now?"

"Of course!" Trixie said. "What magical feat would be complete without its dramatic conclusion?!"

"The sooner the better," Twilight said, her voice a bit shaky. Trixie obliged, bringing the bottom halves to the tops. She tapped the boxes with her wand.

"PRESTO, CHANGE-O, REARRANGE-O!" she said theatrically. And then, she opened the boxes, letting the siblings climb out.

Twilight and her brother both got out, and onto their hooves. Their lower halves had been reattached.

"AAAAAAAHHHH!" Twilight shrieked.

"AAAIIIIIEEEEEEEHHHH!" Shining shrieked also, somehow with a higher pitch.

Trixie just grinned a wicked grin.

Their lower halves had been reattached. But to the wrong ponies. Twilight watched Shining panic, trotting in place frantically his two front, white hooves, and her back, lavender ones, complete with her Cutie Mark. Twilight looked back at her own hind quarters. Her brother's flank and tail moved at her command, a part of her now.

"It worked! It actually worked!" Trixie said triumphantly. "Trixie truly is the most powerful, most magical equine that has EVER LIVED!"

"Great, sure! Now put us back the way we were!" Twilight demanded.

"Yeah, you've had your fun, now fix us." Shining said with an edge of anger to his voice.

"Very well. The Great and Powerful-"

"NOW!" the Sparkle siblings barked in unison.

"Okay, okay." Trixie lifted Twilight and set her back in the box, closing it again. She lifted Shining up over the other box.

BBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZTTTTT!!!

The timer alarm on the stove went off, startling Trixie and breaking her concentration. She dropped Shining in the box. But the fragile prop was no match for the mass of the falling stallion. It smashed to splinters. Trixie stared at the destroyed box under the bruised pony in abject horror. Her mouth fell open, as two whispered words fell out.

"Oh, shit."

Trixie's whispered words hung in the silent room. Twilight lifted herself up out of her box and looked at the scattered wooden carnage on the floor.

"What's the big deal? It's just a prop." Twilight said. "Hurry up and fix us."

"Trixie can't do it without the box!" Trixie said.

"Just say the words and do the spell and swap us back! Do it, or else it'll be presto change-o your face I'll rearrange-o!" Twilight threatened.

"Trixie- ugh, I- I can't!" Trixie cried. "I never could! The wand, the words, the spell! None of it's real! It's all for show! The boxes were enchanted to do all the work!" Trixie sobbed. Her mind raced.

"I don't have a permit for these!" Trixie thought, panicked. She was screwed. She could run. But Princess Celestia would find her. For this, for Twilight, she would scour Equestria with every resource at her disposal. "I've mutilated Celestia's prized protege with flesh magic. They hang ponies for that don't they?" She was SO screwed.

"Trixie! Come on, think!" Twilight put her hooves to her temples. "Okay, I've got it! What if you cut me in half, and then open the box and take-"

"NO!" Trixie shouted. "You can't! You can't open them when they're separated. It's a safety feature. If you opened them it would actually cut a pony in half! It would kill you!" Trixie cried harder.

"Okay. Come on, work with me here. Where did you get these?"

"A shop in Hoofington."

"Do these only work as a matched set, or can you get another?"

"Trixie could- I could get it repaired, or replaced!" Trixie's face lit up with hope. "That would work!"

"Okay! Good! We have a plan!" Twilight said. "We'll just go to Hoofington-"

"We?" Shining said, shaking his purple flank. "You and I are not going anywhere! Not like this!" Twilight looked at her own two-toned body and scratched her chin.

"Okay, Trixie, you go to Hoofington, and get this repaired, or replaced, then bring it back here. If you leave now..." Twilight quickly did the math, "you should be able to make it back by... Sunday."

"But-" Trixie started.

"But what?"

"But Trixie- but I... don't have any money." Trixie said.

"You don't have any money?" Shining asked.

"Not enough for this," she answered. Twilight ran upstairs, returning with a ceramic pig.

"Shining, I'm smashing your piggy bank," she said.

"But that's for emergencies!" he whined. Twilight's eyebrows furrowed as she grabbed him, glaring at him with a twitching eye.

"What the hell do you think THIS is!?" she growled, smashing the pig on the floor, gathering up the Bits from the broken pieces. Shining whimpered.

"Aww. Pigly."

"Is this enough?" Twilight asked, dumping the bits into Trixie's hooves. "Enough to get you to Hoofington and back, and get the box?" Trixie counted it out quickly.

"Yes," she answered, "You can count on me, I- I know what would happen if the Princess ever found out that I did this to you. Twilight walked her to the door, letting her out.

"Hopefully she'll never have to." Twilight said, calming down.

"Thank you, Twilight," she said, erring closer. They just stared at each other for a moment, into each others eyes

"Hurry back." With that, Twilight closed the door and Trixie hurried to the Canterlot Train station. Inside Twilight leaned against the door and groaned. "What else could go wrong?" she asked, tempting fate.

She smelled smoke in the house.

Fate obliged

Twilight smelled smoke inside the house.

"THE HAY FRIES!"

Twilight Sparkle and her brother rushed into the kitchen to put out the flames in the oven, saving the kitchen. But when it was all over, both were covered in sooty ash from head to hoof. Shining took the tray of charred fries and dumped them in the trash.

"What did those poor hay fries ever do to you?" he asked.

"It was an accident."

"That was the last of the food," Shining said solemnly, "and you incinerated it."

"It was an accident!" she defended. They both sat at the table.

"So what now?" he asked.

"Now, I'm ready for bed." Twilight said. "But first I'm going to need a shower." She motioned to herself. "And you too." He looked at his own sooty fur.

"I guess so. Do you want to go first?" he asked, offering the one shower in the house.

"Nah, just, let me rest here for a while. It's... been a day."

"Yeah, no kidding." Shining headed upstairs to shower.

When he reached the bathroom he had a familiar sensation. He needed to pee. On instinct, he walked over to the toilet and reared up, reaching down to aim his- "Oh... right." For a minute, Shining just stood there. A bit baffled, looking down at his, or rather, his sister's lavender legs under him, unsure of what to do. It seemed straightforward enough. But he didn't want there to be any more incidents. He opened the door and called downstairs. "Twilie?"

"What is it?" she yelled back up.

"I need to pee."

"That's great," she answered. She could feel a headache coming on.

"Um, how do I, you know ... do it?" he asked. Twilight groaned.

"What? There's no secret to it. You just sit there and... let it happen," she said, explaining the seemingly trivial concept to an adult. It was quiet for a minute.

"...okay." Shining was about to close the door when Twilight jumped up from the table and yelled.

"And make sure you wipe FRONT TO BACK! I don't want to get my lower half back with an infection!"

"Okay!" Shining closed the door again and walked back over to the toilet. He just stood there, planning his strategy. He didn't have any concrete memories of being potty trained, but he imagined it must have been something similar to this. "Fuck it." Not wanting to admit defeat to Twilight, he flushed the empty toilet, turned on the shower, and stepped in with a full bladder. It wouldn't be the first time he'd done it in the shower. Well, this would be his first time doing it as a mare.

And that warranted investigation!

Shining levitated the hoof mirror from the counter and held it under him. The toilet was a far smaller target than the tub, and he wanted to make sure that he knew where it was coming from, and at what angle it was aiming. He lifted his tail and looked in the mirror. Suddenly he became acutely aware that he was closely examining his sister's genitals. His stomach did a quick flop, like when a carnival ride did a sudden drop. But the feeling passed in lieu of his pressing need to urinate. He shook it off and proceeded to put a free hoof to his folds, spreading them.

It was a strange sensation for him, having a vagina. Hell, a gentle breeze felt different now. And now him putting his hooves on himself. He felt a somewhat similar feeling, a tingling in his belly as he touched his sensitive folds. He adjusted the mirror. Ponies didn't usually wear clothes, and tails, for the most part, hid their modesty. And it was just common courtesy to not look. Despite this, Shining Armor, whom hadn't yet been intimate with a mare, hadn't ever really gotten a good look at the other gender's defining features up close.

But there it was in front of him. Or rather, behind him. Completely at the mercy of his hooves as he washed up with soap. He was free to touch it all he wanted. He spread the lips, moved them this way and that. Touched here, there, everywhere. He felt a pang in his kidneys. He'd held it long enough. He took a deep breath and released.

As far as visceral sensations, it wasn't all that different. His stream more or less went predictably straight down where he squatted, splashing off of the mirror and onto his legs. The feeling of emptying his bladder was the same palpable relief he was used to. And the running water of the shower washed away the mess. He finished cleaning the rest of himself, scrubbing with soap and shampooing his mane and tail. But he was fixated with his new 'feature', probing at it with his hoof. He wondered if the narrow, cylindrical shampoo bottle would fit in it. He levitated it under him and pressed it to the small opening.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

"Hey! Are you going to use ALL of the hot water!?" Twilight shouted.

"Okay! okay!" Shining quickly put the bottle down and finished rinsing. He turned off the water and stepped out, toweling off. Before he could even finish, Twilight opened the door.

"Hey!" Shining said, covering himself.

"What? Are you afraid that I'll see my own privates? I was tired of waiting," she said.

"Alright, alright. Sheesh." Shining hastily finished and hung up the towel, leaving the bathroom and closing the door behind him.

Twilight's shower was far less eventful than Shining's. Contrary to her usual, curious self, tonight she was as brief and practical in the shower as she could, focusing on cleaning her mane and fur of the soot from the fire. Her lower half was not nearly as dirty. And she wasn't nearly as keen to be putting her hooves all over her brother's flanks, even if they were attached to her for tonight. The running water and suds were enough to rinse it clean. And that was good enough for her, turning off the water and toweling dry before going to bed for an early night.

The next morning, Shining awoke to the sound of his sister screaming. The clock on his nightstand said 5:59 am. He jumped from his bed and ran down the hall.

"AAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!"

Her screaming continued. Shining ran to her room.

"What is it!? What's wrong!?" He yelled, expecting the worst. Twilight was sitting in her bed, still under the covers, lifting them and looking under, presumably at herself.

"IT'S- IT'S OUT!"

"What!?" Shining rubbed his eyes in the doorway, even with his heart pumping adrenaline from the shock of the rude awakening, he was still barely awake.

"IT'S OUT!" she screamed again. "MY- YOUR- IT'S OUT!" She looked away from herself, clenching her eyes. "IT'S ON! IT'S UP! IT'S OUT!"

"What the fu- oh, for pony's sake." Shining rubbed his face in disbelief. Twilight was having her first encounter with morning wood. "Stop screaming. It's just morning wood."

"What?" Twilight asked, still shaken.

"Morning wood. It's a-" he used the clinical term with her, "It's an erection that you have when you first wake up. It's normal."

"How do I make it go away!?" Twilight pleaded.

"What? You don't do anything. Ignore it. It'll go away on it's own."

"When? How soon!?" she asked.

"I don't frigging know! I never timed it!" He yelled. "It's too early for this crap! Go back to sleep." Shining walked back to his room and closed the door. He cursed into his pillow. He didn't remember the first time he'd ever had morning wood. But he sure as hell didn't scream and wake up the whole damn house. The clock on his nightstand said 6:01 am. He pulled the covers over his head.

Twilight sat in her own bed. Her alarm had gone off, waking her for school. It was a Friday after all. The clock didn't know it was a holiday weekend. But when she lifted the covers and saw... that, she freaked out. She was calm now. Or at least, calmer. The blankets covered it. But she could still see it bulging through the blankets. Menacingly.

Despite living with her father and brother most of her life, and the fact the ponies normally didn't wear clothes, she'd never a penis before. Balls and sheath, sure. "Twilight, I'm going to turn around now. And you had better be on fire. You're standing there in flames, and the ONLY pony who can put you out, is ME! Because that is the only CONCEIVABLE REASON, that you would wake me up like this!"

He was not a morning pony.

"Shining, come on! This is serious!" she whined. Shining clenched his eyes and counted to ten in his head.

"What. Is. it?" he asked, as he sat up, resigning to the fact that he wouldn't be getting back to sleep.

"It's still... look!" She raised her leg. Her condition was obvious.

"I told you. Just ignore it."

"I can't! I tried! It's just, it's all I can think about! My every thought is bent on it! I can't think straight. I just- I just-" Twilight didn't care for using the word, but she could think of no other word that could so completely encapsulate her feelings. "I just want to... FUCK something! I don't even care what!"

"HA!" Shining laughed. "Welcome to life as a stallion! I'd say 'get used to it' but lucky for you, you won't have to. So don't expect any sympathy from me. I have to deal with that every day."

"Really? I mean, is it really this bad for you?"

"Well, not for me. Not anymore. I got used to it and learned to control it a long time ago. But it's new for you, so I can understand. Just wait until you have a couple of little colts of your own someday and they start humping the furniture for no reason. It doesn't get them anywhere, but that's what it's like. She briefly considered destroying them so that no other pony could befall her fate. She thought better of it, hoping that perhaps she could return them to the shop and Shining could get his money back from her. She abandoned that hope. She knew Trixie well enough. He was never going to see that money again. Twilight packed everything up, and loaded it back onto the cart outside, coming back inside at last for just one more thing.

"Trixie, get up!" Twilight said, with an edge of anger to her voice. Trixie finally got to her hooves. "Your stuff is all packed up outside. I think you should head back to the school now," she said. Trixie looked around the room, and then out the window. Indeed, everything of hers was ready to go. She looked back at Twilight.

"Would you... like to come with me?" Trixie asked, "To my dorm for the night?" Twilight understood very well what she was implying.

"I don't think so Trixie," she said, "It's been a really weird weekend, and I just need some time to..." Twilight wasn't sure what to say. She realized that she had been infatuated with her for some time. But deep down, Twilight knew that Trixie could never really love her. Trixie was already in love with herself. Sure, maybe it would be fun, for a while anyway, but that wasn't what Twilight wanted, or needed. "...I just need some time." Trixie heard the words. But the look in Twilight's eyes told her everything. It was rejection. "I'll see you in class tomorrow, okay?"

"Okay," Trixie said weakly, trying to keep the hurt from her face. She walked to the small cart and started to pull it away, back to the school campus. Twilight watched her walk away. Trixie didn't look back. Trixie wouldn't let herself look back. She wouldn't let Twilight see her crying.

Twilight closed the door. That was painful. Trixie could be obnoxious on the best of days, but Twilight didn't like hurting anypony's feelings. She leaned against the door and took a deep breath. She could deal with that later. She walked back into the living room. It, along with the kitchen, reeked of sex.

"Shining?" she asked of the dozing stallion. He was out like a light. As much as she wanted to let him sleep, as much as he surely deserved it after all of this, she needed his help to clean the house before their parents got home. She sat on the couch next to where he was laying. "Shining?" she asked again, gently nudging him with her hoof. He scrunched his face, upset at the disturbance. He'd already missed a lot of sleep last night. He really wanted to catch up on more than just a fifteen minute nap. He opened his eyes at last.

"Hey," he said. She leaned in and gave him a hug, just a regular hug, and helped him up.

"How are you doing?" she asked.

"I'm alright," he answered. "You?"

"A little sore," Twilight admitted, shifting her legs.

"Yeah she was a little rough on my- on your..." He blushed, trailing off. Suddenly it felt very strange again to be talking about his sister's marehood. He looked around, seeing no sign of Trixie. "Hey, where is she anyway?"

"She just left. She-" Twilight thought for a moment, "She said she was sorry about this weekend and how she behaved today. She didn't know what came over her and she'll try to pay you back your money as soon as she can," Twilight lied.

"No she didn't," he said. Shining was barely awake but he was having none of it.

"No..." Twilight frowned, "she didn't."

"I'm sorry, Twilight."

"It's okay. It would never have worked out, me and her. I know that now."

"You'll find somepony," he said. "Somepony better." Twilight looked over at her brother, sitting on the couch next to her. "Somepony who really loves you."

"Thanks," she said.

"No problem." They both sat there for a minute. Each waiting for the other to say something as they sat there and looked at eachother. Twilight spoke first.

"Come on. Let's get this house cleaned up before Mom and Dad come home."

They spent the rest of the day cleaning up every part of the house. After they emptied the dryer, they each made their beds with fresh, clean linen. Back downstairs, they took a break, making some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Afterwards, Shining stayed in the kitchen, washing the dishes that they had made. Wiping down the table and cleaning the kitchen floor. Twilight focused on the living room, digging out the shampooer from the basement to get out the stains on carpet and upholstery before they set in.

It was getting dark out when she noticed a glob of semen that had gotten onto the end-table beside the couch. Twilight reached over to clean it up with a cleaning rag, but stopped at the last moment. She reached out with her hoof, scooping it up and bringing it to her lips, licking it, tasting it one last time. It was causing her tail to raise on its own.

"What are you doing?" Shining asked, poking his head into the living room.

"Nothing!" she answered a bit to quickly and loudly to not seem suspicious, quickly grabbing a rag and smeared the table top. He just stood there for a minute.

"You've got a bit of... uh..." he motioned to her lip. Twilight wiped her mouth with her hoof, mortified. Shining tried to think of something to say, rather than just standing there silently with her. "I'm, uh, gonna go back and finish the kitchen," he said, turning to leave.

"Shining...?" Twilight said. Shining stopped walking and clenched his teeth. He had already started to try to forget about this whole weekend, and try to pretend it was all just a strange dream. But that tone in her voice, he knew she was going to ask him something that he didn't want to have to answer. He sighed and turned back to her.

"What is it, Twilie?" he asked calmly, praying that she only needed some more paper towels or something.

"Could we... could I sleep in your bed tonight?" she asked.

"No, Twilie," he answered calmly, "I need to report back to my squadron tonight. And you need to go back to your school."

"Could we... could we-" Twilight paced frantically in place in frustration, unable to find the words. She blurted it out at last. "Could we do it? Do it one last time, like this?" she asked desperately. Shining frowned, disappointed. He was really hoping she wasn't going to ask him that. But he honestly wasn't surprised that she did.

"No, Twilie," he answered, calmly still, keeping his tone level. He needed to keep emotion out of this.

"Just this once, please!" Twilight begged.

"No, Twilie. That's not going to work this time," he said. "I'm your brother. And you're my sister. Whatever happened this weekend... we need to just put it behind us, and get back to normal."

"Do you regret what we did?" she asked. She was on the verge of tears.

"What's done is done. Nothing is going to change that. What matters now is what we chose to do from here on," he said.

"You didn't answer my question," she said, calling out his attempt at dodging the issue. She was the smartest mare he knew. "Do you regret what we did?"

"I should," he said. "And you should too, both of us." He waited for a moment. Twilight wasn't fooled, and she wasn't backing down either. She waited. She wanted his answer and she damn well knew that wasn't it. "... but I don't," he said at last. "I don't regret it." Twilight stepped toward him, putting her hoof out to touch him. "Don't. You're not changing my mind. Not about this."

"But, but why not?" she asked. "Nopony has to know. Nopony is getting hurt."

"Maybe not this time," he said. Twilight looked puzzled. "Twilight, what do you think will come of this? Do you really think that if we let ourselves do it this time that we'll be able to have the willpower to not want to again? Maybe. But what if it isn't the last time? What if someone found out?"

"They won't!" she cried.

"Even still- Even if it was 'just sex', Twilight, what if one of us starts having feelings for the other some day?" he asked. "What then? What if one of us starts dating somepony else? What if one of us gets jealous?"

"I- I don't know!" Twilight cried. Shining walked over and hugged her.

"Shhh, shhh. It's okay," he said, holding her. "I love you Twi. And I always will. But I need you to be my sister, and I need to be your brother, not lovers. I need you to get past this. We both do. Do you understand?" Twilight nodded against his shoulder. "Alright, come on." He dried her eyes with his hoof. Afterwards, Shining put away all of the cleaning equipment and met with Twilight back in the living room.

"All set?" he asked. She nodded. "Alright, let's get going." He walked with her outside, closing the door behind them and dropping the garbage bag into the trash can. Inside the house was spotlessly clean. It was like a black hole had materialized, erasing absolutely all evidence that anypony was ever there. The Canterlot Crime Scene Investigators would be impressed. Standing on the sidewalk under the streetlight, they said their goodbyes. Shining threw his bag over his back and turned to walk away.

"Shining!" Twilight said. He turned back and she ran up and gave him a hug and a kiss. Just a chaste peck on the cheek. "It was good to see you."

"You too." He turned to walk away again.

"Shining!" He stopped and turned around again.

"Yeah?"

"Could you... walk me to school?" she asked. He was already running short on sleep and he needed to get up very early in the morning for squadron role call, and vigorous PT to follow. The Royal Guard barracks were to the north, adjacent to the palace. Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns was to the south, in Lower Canterlot. In the complete opposite direction of the way he needed to go. It would nearly double the distance he would have to walk and his bags were not light. He just smiled.

"... and that is why I know how to be such a fantastic lover for a mare," Shining Armor said to Cadance after their second time having sex, taking a deep breath to finish his long story, "because I briefly used to be one." Cadance laid there on his bed beside him. Blinking in disbelief, trying to find the words for her response, speaking at last.

"Well... that was needlessly graphic."

Several More Years Later...

"And that was how I got Cadance to marry me," Shining said to Twilight on the day of his wedding, taking a deep breath to finish his long story, "because I was such a fantastic lover for a her. Because I briefly used to be a mare." Twilight stood there beside him. Blinking in disbelief, trying to find the words for her response, speaking at last.

"Well... that was needlessly graphic," she said. "Wait! So Cadance has known about that this whole time!?" He nodded quickly, and directed his attention to the back of the Great Hall. Twilight followed his eyes, and felt a wave of emotions wash over her, not the least of which being anxiety as Cadance walked up the aisle. There was so much she wanted to ask him. Both of them. So much she needed to tell them. But it would have to wait.

The wedding ceremony was beautiful, and reception was the event of the year. But Twilight never found the opportunity to speak with either of them away from the onslaught of the other guests and well-wishers. After an evening of dancing and singing and of course cake, it was time for the newly-weds to depart for their honeymoon. Twilight helped Cadance into the carriage, and then her brother. He hugged her before he got inside, whispering into her ear.

"I'll see you soon." He looked at her and winked, getting into the carriage. Twilight watched it roll away, confused as to what the wink meant. Some time later, two more carriages pulled up to the reception. The drivers stepped out from each harness, opening the doors in synchronicity.

"Twilight Sparkle?" the first asked.

"And company?" the second asked. Twilight and her friends nodded.

"Wait, why does Twilight have a separate carriage?" Rainbow Dash asked.

"Yeah, I'd actually prefer to ride with my friends," Twilight said.

"Complements of the wedding party," the first driver said.

"We were given very specific instructions," the second continued, "This carriage is for your friends."

"This carriage is for 'Twilie' Sparkle," the first said, putting emphasis into her nickname. There was only one pony she knew who called her that. This must have been what the wink was about.

"It's okay guys," Twilight said to her friends. "I'll meet up with you all back in Ponyville." She boarded the carriage. Her friends' carriage went back to Ponyville, dropping each pony off at their individual homes. Twilight's carriage did not go to her home. It didn't even go to Ponyville.

"Driver, where are we going?" she asked. He looked back from his harness.

"Captain Armor has given specific instructions that I am not to tell you. It is supposed to be a surprise."

Shining and his surprises...

Twilight looked up ahead at the skyline of the city they were approaching. The sun was rising behind it, so she knew they were heading east. But it didn't look like Fillydelphia or Manehattan.

"Baltimare?" she asked.

"Yes ma'am."

The carriage headed to south Baltimare, to Horseshoe bay. It was so-named for the U shape of the inlet, bordered by beautiful, white-sand beaches and dotted with luxury resorts.

One in particular, the Bitz-Carlton, owned most of the southern peninsula. It was a very expensive and exclusive resort. It didn't have hotel rooms so much as individual houses. They were marketed as bungalows, but they were each at least as large as her parents' house. Each one had a secluded section of the peninsula, and had it's own private section beach.

"Here we are," the driver said. Twilight stepped out and fumbled for her purse. "It's quite alright ma'am. It's already been seen to. Enjoy your stay." He passed an envelope to her before departing. It had her name written on it. She recognized the hoofwriting. It was her brother's. In the Royal Guard, he was a savant when it came to combat magic. But his hoofwriting still looked like it was written by a foal with palsy. Twilight stood there on the sidewalk, watching as the carriage rolled away. She turned back to where she'd been delivered. There was a long, cobblestone walkway down the gentle hill. She could only just barely see the structure for all of the palm trees.

Getting closer, she could see that the entire structure had a tropical theme with a modern underlay. A thatch roof clearly over a normal roof. A teak wood facade. Bamboo veneer window frames. The thing that really looked out of place was the stainless steel door nob. She opened the envelope. A key fell out with another note, likewise in his writing.

Surprise!

Twilight arched her eyebrow at the note. "Subtle," she muttered. She put the key into the door's lock and turned it. It was just as spacious on the inside. A big, fully-furnished living room and an open wall to the kitchen. The far side of the kitchen had a pair of full-pane glass sliding doors that led out to a giant patio adjacent to the beach. They had gotten her a suite at the resort! Twilight walked into the short hallway, checking out the bedroom. It had a king-size bed and all sorts of nick knacks on the bureau and shelves.

"Surprise," she heard from behind her. Twilight spun around. In the bedroom doorway stood her brother.

"Shiny!" Twilight ran over and hugged him. "What is going on? Why am I here? What is all this?" she asked.

"This is actually Cadance's summer house," he said. "One of the perks of being royalty, I guess. She thought it would be nice to let you stay here for a week as thanks for everything you've done for us."

"Aww, thank you!" Twilight said, looking past Shining into the hallway. "Where is she anyway? I thought right now you two would be... you know, consummating your marriage." Shining blushed and scratched his mane.

"Actually, we haven't done that part yet," he said. "She's actually-"

"SHINING!" Cadance called from across the hall. "Would you get in here!? I'm dripping wet!"

"Oops!" Shining blushed and trotted into the hall. "I forgot about that!" He looked at Twilight. "Come on." Twilight scoffed.

"Me!? Come with you!?" she asked. He nodded.

"Yeah." Shining opened the other door and walked into the other room around the corner, out of her sight. "Hey baby! Do you want this?" she heard him say.

"Oh yes! Give it to me! I need it so bad! I'm so wet!" Cadance said from inside the room. Twilight waited nervously in her own bedroom, listening to Cadance. "Oh, that feels so good!"

"Are you coming?" Shining asked. Twilight waited for a moment.

"Um, are you asking me!?" Twilight asked nervously.

"Please, come inside!" Cadance said.

"Are you telling me!?" Twilight asked louder into the hallway.

"Don't make it so hard!" Shining said.

"I'M SO CONFUSED!" Twilight cried.

"Twilight Sparkle, get in this room!" They shouted together, leaving no uncertain terms for the lavender unicorn. Twilight steeled herself, preparing her eyes as she walked out into the hallway and into the other room.

Shining was sitting beside Cadance on the edge of a large Jacuzzi bath tub. Cadance had just finished taking a bath and she was enjoying him toweling her mane dry with a towel that he'd gotten for her from the linen closet.

"Oh. Well that explains a lot!" Twilight said.

"Hey Twilight!" Cadance said. "How was your trip?"

"It was okay. A little confusing."

"Sorry about that," Cadance said. "I wanted to tell you at the wedding but-"

"You know how Shining is with his surprises," both mares said in unison.

"Hey!" he protested.

"Anyway," Cadance continued, "After such a long day with the wedding and the trip in the carriage, I really needed a bath. And this tub is simply luxurious!" Twilight could understand how she felt. She was, herself, still in her Best Mare dress from the night previous.

"Yeah, I could probably use a bath myself," Twilight said.

"Would you like me to lend a hoof to scrub your back?" Cadance asked. "It would give us some time to catch up on things. I haven't really had a chance to talk with you since the wedding."

"Aww, just like when you used to foalsit me as a filly! That would be nice," Twilight said. She paused, glancing at her brother. "If it's okay with your new husband."

"Pshh, I don't mind," he said as he finished drying Cadance's mane with the towel.

"Okay then," Cadance said, turning to him, "why don't you go for a swim at the beach for an hour? Maybe practice surfing!"

"Nah. Maybe later."

"Shining, why don't you go for a swim for an hour so Twilight and I can catch up?" Cadance repeated with less subtlety as she began to draw a fresh bath. Shining got the hint.

"I'm going to go for a swim," he recited obediently. "You two take some time to catch up. I'll see you both in about an hour." He walked out of the bathroom and out through the kitchen down to the beach.

"You've got him trained well," Twilight commented with a smirk as she shuffled out of her dress.

"Well I was his marefriend for a long time before we got married," Cadance said, helping Twilight out of the complicated garment. Despite usually not wearing clothing, there was still something erotic about a pony undressing. For certain garments, it was about what it covered, or left exposed, and what showcased to draw the eye to. Cadance took her removed dress and hung it up on a rack.

"Yeah..." Twilight replied with melancholy.

"Are you okay?" Cadance asked.

"Yeah I just- I knew you two had dated a while ago, but I didn't think you still were. And then out of the blue, I get a wedding invitation," Twilight said.

"I'm sorry Twilight. I didn't want to keep it a secret from you, but we had to keep our relationship a secret from everypony, what with me being a princess. You understand. And to be fair..." Cadance leaned in and kissed Twilight on the nose, "there's plenty that he doesn't know either." Twilight blushed. "Come on," Cadance took her by her hoof and helped her into the tub. It was less of a tub, and more like a raised section of the tile floor, with a small in-ground swimming pool of a tub. It had a large faucet to fill the tub, as well as a removable shower head mounted on a post. Twilight lowered herself into the warm water of the half-filled tub. The temperature was perfect.

"Are you upset that we got married?" Cadance asked.

"What? No," Twilight answered. "I mean, I was at first, when I first found out. I didn't even know who he was marrying! 'Princess Mi Amore Cadenza'," she mocked. Cadance chuckled.

"Yeah. I never did use my formal name with you, did I?"

"I guess I was just worried that I was going to lose him. Especially when I met-" Twilight stopped short, glancing at Cadance. The trauma of what had happened was still so recent, both of them nearly losing their lives and Shining to that thing, the Changeling Queen. "...her."

"You really saved the day," Cadance said, trying to keep the mood positive.

"Yeah but... even then, after, I felt like I was still losing somepony. Maybe I still do." She frowned.

"Twilight," Cadance sat on the side of the tub, taking the shower head in her hoof, running it over Twilight's mane, soaking it down. "You're not losing him. Just because the relationship between him and I has changed, doesn't mean it's going to change between you and him, okay?"

"If you say so," Twilight said, taking some comfort in her words, but not entirely convinced. Cadance turned off the water and drizzled some shampoo into Twilight's mane, working it into a lather. She worked quickly and carefully, in a way that only a foal caretaker could, keeping the soap from her eyes. Twilight sat and enjoyed her hooves massaging her scalp. It was just as she remembered from when she was a little filly. "I've missed this," she said, with an edge of bittersweet tone to her voice.

"Me too," Cadance replied as she rinsed the shampoo from Twilight's mane. With the lightest touch, the unicorn’s body spun around, allowing her companion to begin working more shampoo into her tail. The shower head had been placed back into its holder above, left to cascade warm water onto her back. A pat on the rump told her to turn back around and allow her tail to be rinsed by the falling water. Meanwhile, Cadance placed her hooves into the unicorn’s wet locks, spreading out some conditioner. Cadance’s touch shifted; no longer simply administering hair product – though it was still doing that – but becoming closer to an affectionate caress of Twilight herself.

“If it hadn’t been for you, I might still be in those caves... or I would’ve died there." Cadance made short work of kneading in the conditioner and finished with her tail. Twilight eventually rotated, trying to stay neutral and composed. "And who knows... by the grace of fate it could have been you under her spell instead of him. Before I dated Shining, I honestly thought it was going to be you proposing to me. Or me proposing to you." Twilight blinked back a tear, hoping the water on her cheeks would hide it. Cadance just sat there, looking at her. "Honestly... I still would." Twilight struggled to find the words.

"I love you," Twilight said.

Or at least, it was what she meant to say. Instead it came out a bit differently from what she had intended,

"I'm sorry," she said. Twilight tried to say what she'd been thinking about ever since she saw her walking up that aisle. "I miss what we had. I miss our..." Twilight wanted to say 'dates' if one could call them that. "Our times together." Cadance just smiled. It was that warm, knowing smile that could only come with time and wisdom. It was honest and real. And genuinely comforting.

"There is nothing to forgive. I miss what we had, too. But we both knew that it might not last forever. And when it ended, that was it."

"I was a fool for letting you go," Twilight said. "You were- you are perfect. Everything I could have ever hoped for in a..." she couldn't bring herself to say 'wife', "...partner." Twilight felt her throat get tight, "I was a fool."

"You were confused. You didn't know what you wanted, or who," Cadance said, "You were still just figuring out who you were. Everypony has to go through it. It's nothing to be sorry about."

"I'm sorry I pushed you away," Twilight said. Cadance took her chin in her hoof.

"Hey, you didn't push me anywhere. I'm still right here," she said with a smile. "I did want to marry you. And I still do. But while you might not be my wife, you're still a big part of my life. And I will be forever grateful for it." Twilight looked up at her. Twilight's emotions were a hurricane. But like the so-named storm, there was calm in her eyes. Both of them remembered those times, years ago.

After the sordid weekend with Trixie, Twilight had felt emboldened to explore her sexuality. Particularly her proclivity toward mares. While neither could recall precisely how or when it started, she and Cadance became lovers. At first, Cadance took on more of a teaching role for the young mare. But ever the fast learner, Twilight quickly became an equal in the bedroom, the student taught the master a few tricks of her own.

But that is a story for another time.

Perhaps it was what Shining had said to Twilight before, about getting emotionally involved, but Twilight did not want there to be strings attached with Cadance. Cadance understood that in the beginning. But as time went on, she couldn't deny her attraction to the capable mare growing beyond just a physical infatuation. And like all things, ponies change over time. Perhaps Twilight was beginning to feel the same way.

One night, contrary to their promise to eachother, Cadance admitted that she was falling in love with her, and she hoped that Twilight had felt the same way. Whether it was true or not when Twilight said it, she said that she did not feel the same way. For fear of hurting Cadance further, Twilight put an end to their relationship. It was to this day, one of the hardest things she'd ever had to do.

“I... I do love you,” Twilight managed at length. That, at least, was true. “Maybe not in the same way that you feel about me, but... I do. I know it. I love you, Cadance...” Her dripping forelock provided the illusion of tears rolling down her cheeks. She could only hope that there weren’t any real ones mixing in. “I’m sorry it’s not enough...”

“It’s enough,” came the whisper. “It’s more than I ever hoped we would be.” She hugged her as they brought their foreheads together, horn-to-horn, exchanging unhurried breaths in the artificial downpour of the shower. Cadance pulled away first, giving a quick shake of the head to dismiss both the moment and the water accumulated on her muzzle. “Now, we still need to clean your coat."

Cadance got to work quickly, lathering up her neck and shoulders and finally her hindquarters, the Alicorn's forehooves moved in smooth, deliberate circles. For Twilight, having her mane and tail washed had been a touch intimate. This was notably more so – especially since Cadance had foregone using a washcloth or sponge, opting for skillful direct contact. The feel of those hooves massaging every part of her body left Twilight riding an indulgent high that the best spas couldn’t rival. It was also nostalgic.

“I only said that I was open to us being more," Cadance said. "But the last thing I wanted was to pressure you into a relationship you weren't comfortable with. My only hope is that wherever we end up... we can stay friends.” Twilight nodded resolutely.

“Always.” By this point, Cadance had progressed all the way down to the unicorn’s fetlocks. She brought the nozzle in again, giving a thorough rinsing to the smaller pony’s frame, paying special attention to her undercarriage, where the normal shower from above might miss. It tickled, just a bit.

The Alicorn’s muzzle rubbed soothingly at the base of her ear. She traced along the younger pony’s jaw, tickling her with warm air as she did, and making the briefest touch of pink nose to purple at the finish... It was an invitation.

They gazed at each other again, eyes dreamily half-lidded, mouths happy and anticipating, moving closer until they connected. This one didn’t immediately crest and fade; it built as Cadance pressed forward and Twilight answered in equal measure, neither mare backing down from the challenge. Their lips parted, and Twilight’s tongue won the race by entering the Alicorn’s mouth first, meeting its friend for a long-awaited affectionate wrestle.

Each pony twisted her head to the side, hooking foreleg around neck, locking together tighter, going deeper, tasting more of the other. The tingles of initial contact gave way to surges of pleasure as they continued to push and twist in a hot and wet game that had no real loser. Twilight’s heart beat faster, and a familiar warmth embraced her entire body. It was electric; magical. Lips and mouth were erogenous zones, after all. Cadance was skilled in manipulating them, but Twilight had been a quick study, and by now she knew just what the princess liked, remembering to vary the pressure on the lips, and perform little twirls on the tip of her tongue that the alicorn especially enjoyed. Twilight broke the kiss first, catching her breath.

"Why did we ever stop doing this?" Twilight asked.

"I couldn't keep pretending to be foalsitting you, Twi," she said, "You were grown up. You were already going to magic school." Cadance blushed. "And I was afraid that your brother would find out about us."

"Really?" Twilight asked. Cadance nodded. "So you've never told him? About us?" Cadance shook her head.

"No, of course not. I had promised you that I wouldn't," she said. Cadance kissed her again. It was a gentle blend of passion and intimacy, bore of both wanton lust, and familiar longing. "Relationship?" Shining asked. Cadance gave Twilight a leading glance. The three of them settled onto the seating in the living room.

"Well..." Twilight tapped her hooves together, "A little while after... that weekend, with Trixie and the boxes, but before you and Cadance stated dating, she and I dated for a while."

"Oh." Shining said. As simply and as plainly as though somepony had told him that the weather would be cloudy tomorrow. "Do either of you want something to drink?" he asked.

"Wait- that's it? 'Oh'? Aren't you mad, or upset or jealous?" she asked.

"But- but why not? She's your wife."

"Twilie, just because you were jealous of me being with her, doesn't mean I have to feel the same way about you."

"Loves you? I know. I wasn't just watching, you know. I was listening too," he said. Cadance tried to keep her expression neutral.

"She's still in love with you, Shining," Cadance said. Cadance reached over and took Twilight's hoof and put it in Shining's. The flood gates opened. "Twilie-" he tried to speak. Twilight lunged over, hugging him.

"Shining, there is not another soul in this world that has ever made me half the pony I am when I'm with you. And I would risk what we have, to take it to the next plateau. "And even if we... never talk again after today, please know that I am forever changed because of who you are, and what you've meant to me." But the love has to already be there."

Shining and Twilight did not see Cadance's horn glow. Nor the small, pink half-hearts-shaped projection as it floated above them, clasping together to complete the spell. Twilight needed no reminder to feel the way that she did. And there was just one way to know if another did as well.

"I love you," Twilight said again, briefly kissing his cheek. She shifted her self to stand and leave, likely seeing them for the last time. A hoof on hers stopped her. It was his. She turned and looked at him.

"I love you too," Shining said. "And-" he looked away for a moment and grit his teeth, painful in the admission, "And I would be lying if I said it wasn't in the same way." Twilight's eyes lit up like fireworks, nearly about to ponce him. He put a hoof up to her chest, stopping her short. "But Twilight, you have to understand, I'm in love with Cadance, more. And that's not going to change. I'm sorry if that's not enough, but you need to accept that," he said. Twilight felt hurt at first. But she looked into his eyes. There was no lying there.

"It's enough," Twilight breathed, falling into his broad chest, hugging him once more, "It's more than I ever hoped. I love you."

"And I love Cadance," Shining said.

"And I love Twilight." Shining and Twilight both looked up, over at Cadance sitting beside them, speaking at last. She had been quiet this whole time, barely holding herself together. "Of all of us, you had gotten the better deal. At least you got to marry the pony you love," Cadance said. "I got to marry the brother of the pony I love, keeping her in my life. And Twilight- well, taboos being what they are, Twilight will have to keep her true feelings a secret from everypony outside of this room for the rest of her life." Cadance paused. "But she deserves better than that. As long as she could share them with the ponies inside this room, that would be okay. That would be enough. She could be happy." Shining Armor and Twilight Sparkle hugged each other. Princess Cadance hugged them both. "This is good," she said "This... this can work. We can make this work."

"You know, Cadance actually had originally invited you out here to thank you for helping me be such a good lover," Shining said after a few moments. "I wasn't sure how exactly she was going to pitch the reason to you though. But after the changeling invasion, I figured she would say it was to thank you for saving her from the caves, or me from the Queen, or for saving all of Canterlot, really."

She had taken a great risk arranging the emotional reunion of the siblings. But she knew that she would not be able to have Twilight as her lover again without resolving her feelings for her brother. The specifics of how you were thanked I left open." Twilight smiled, feeling her brother's excitement growing between her legs. She could think of a few ways. "Watch in awe as The Great and Powerful Trixie performs the most spectacular feats of magic ever witnessed by pony eyes!" Trixie announced from outside. Twilight Sparkle thought that she had recognized the voice. There was no uncertainty now. Before Princess Cadance could open the door to let the azure unicorn inside, Twilight vaulted over the living room furniture, into the kitchen behind the breakfast bar. Shining Armor was left, stranded paralyzed on the couch, unsure of what to do. Cadance took a step back, opening the door completely.

"Trixie was scheduled for a performance at this address this evening," Trixie said in her classic third-person bravado. She glanced at the clock on the wall above the mantel. "And she is perfectly punctual. Fitting, as she excels at all things!" Trixie used her magic to bring a small cart inside. Outside, Cadance could see Trixie's caravan, parked at the end of the walkway. A few other items of her remained outside the door. She paid them no heed. The real show was about to begin inside. She closed the door and joined her new husband on the couch. Trixie opened the large trunk on the cart, sorting through a few items, preparing a suitable area in the open space of the living room floor. Cadance looked around the room.

"Um, where's-" she asked Shining. She followed his pointed glance toward the kitchen. She looked and saw Twilight peeking out from behind the breakfast bar. Twilight caught her eyes and shook her head 'no'. Cadance nodded and put a hoof to her lips, agreeing to keep her presence a secret. For now.

Trixie began with a few simple acts. Some slight-of-hoof, conjuration, and other illusions. It quickly became clear to Cadance that Trixie had never had any real formal training in magic. Certainly not at any magic school, Celestia's for Gifted Unicorns or otherwise. Had she, Trixie would have known that most of what she was passing off as 'the most spectacular feats of magic ever witnessed by pony eyes' were fairly rudimentary. She looked at her husband, watching beside her.

His face was a strange, polarizing combination of foal-like enraptured wonder, interspersed with the cynical, suspicious glaring of a stallion wronged. The repeated shifting between the two certainly looked like a workout for his facial muscles. Trixie made a bouquet of flowers appear, seemingly, from nowhere. It was something that Shining had seen of her before. He was unimpressed. His expression settled into glower. Trixie presented the flowers to the new bride with a look that could only be described as seductive. Be it just part of the act, or not, it proved to be the final straw for the stallion.

"Alright, that's enough!" he fumed, turning to Cadance. "Why is she here?"

"I invited her, of course," Cadance said in a neutral, matter-of-fact tone. Shining gave her a dubious look. He had known Cadance long enough to know that it was never that simple. She was a good mare, but she could be downright conniving when she wanted to be.

Ever since she had defeated Nightmare Moon, he stopped being 'Captain Shining Armor', and became known as 'Twilight Sparkle's Brother'. He could sympathize with Princess Luna. Apparently even becoming a prince wasn't enough to get out from under his sister's shadow. He glared at Cadance, unconvinced of her overly-simplistic answer. Cadance relented.

"Well, after hearing so much about her from you, I just had to see for myself," Cadance said. Trixie's smirk grew into a wry grin.

"The Great and Powerful Trixie is hard to forget!"

"No matter how hard I try," Shining grumbled. Cadance raised her hoof to interrupt and spoke up, hoping to diffuse any hostility with her practiced diplomacy.

"Um, Mrs. Trixie,"

"Miss," Trixie corrected, batting her eyelashes at the newly, and clearly married mare. Shining and Twilight both face-hoofed in independent synchronicity.

"Miss Trixie, as I recall, I had paid for the... exotic performance?" Cadance said, putting emphasis into the word. Both Twilight's and her brother's ears perked up. Trixie hesitated for a moment. Shining's cheeks were almost as pink as Cadance's. He had always known that Cadance was the adventurous sort in the arena of the erotic. The bell rang for the last time that day, indicating that school was out. Most ponies were in a hurry to leave, since it was a holiday three-day weekend. "Wait!" Trixie cried out. "The Great and Powerful Trixie may- may need a little help." Twilight stopped again and glanced back over her shoulder. Judging by the expression on Trixie's face, it looked like it must have been physically painful to have to make that admission. Twilight turned forward, about to keep walking away, and avoid the headache about to commence. "Please?"

Dammit! Twilight had a personal rule of virtue when it came to the power of 'please'. She took a deep breath and turned back to her.

"Fine. You can at least tell me what it's about." Twilight said.

"Trixie will do one better! Trixie will show you! Come!"

"That needs to stop. Now. If we're going to be spending an extended amount of time together this weekend, then you really need to drop the whole 'referring to yourself in the third-person' act." Twilight said sternly. Trixie realized that she was in a position unsuitable to argue. "Where are we going?" She asked.

"Trixie needs-" Twilight glared at her. "Um, I need to get a few things from my dorm room," she said. The two of them walked across the campus to the dormitories. Twilight had her own dwelling on the opposite side of the campus, adjacent to the school's library. Twilight did not request it, but somehow, Princess Celestia knew it would please her. It was a far cry from the 'common' dormitories. The rooms were not small, per-se, but they were hardly spacious. A modest living space with a bed and a desk at which to study. Each floor had a set of shared wash rooms that were actually quite nice. Trixie walked into her room while Twilight waited in the hallway.

Trixie came back out, pushing a couple of large boxes. And by large, they were the size and dimension of coffins, with large holes at either end. A cursory glance inside revealed them as empty, assuaging Twilight of her fear of being an accessory to a crime. "This," she said. Trixie went back inside and came out with a couple of big metal slats, a comically large wood-saw and a her saddlebags. "And these." She began to walk down the hall, leaving Twilight with the pile of things. She looked back at her. "Well, come on!"

"Do I look like a pack-mule!?" Twilight blanched.

"Well, what about your familiar?" Trixie asked.

"My what?"

"And? What about him? Could he not carry these?"

"No. He's actually busy this weekend, doing something with the Princess," she said, putting emphasis into the word. Twilight tried to avoid using her connection with Princess Celestia as any kind of leverage. But she was not about to carry all of this stuff for her. Trixie sighed and walked back into her dorm room, retrieving a small wagon and loading everything onto it. She pulled behind them it with her magic and they headed back outside.

"Do you need to get anything from your room?" Trixie asked. Twilight was surprised. It was literally the first thing Trixie had asked concerning Twilight all day.

"Um, no. I don't really live on campus," she said. "I live fairly close, in Canterlot."

"Then we don't have far to walk. Lucky you." Trixie said.

"Yeah. Lucky me." Twilight groaned. 'This is getting better by the minute', she mentally complained. "Look, I'm only agreeing to this because I'm all caught up on my own studies, and you obviously need the help."

"Trixie does not-" Twilight cut her a glare. "I- appreciate it." Trixie forced the words out, as though they tasted awful. Twilight knew it wasn't sincere. But at least she was making an effort. Sure enough, they soon arrived at Twilight's house. Twilight knocked on the door before opening it.

"Mom! Dad?" she called into the house, with no answer. Twilight stepped inside, searching for them. The house was empty. On the calendar, the days of the three-day weekend had been circled. Inside, in bold, red, underlined, capital letters it read:

A Night in Shining Armor

It was dark outside of Twilight Sparkle's window. The phase of the moon was barely a sliver of a crescent. Most of the rest of Canterlot was asleep at this late hour. The lights of the homes lining the streets were dark. Twilight's horn glowed dimly, bringing a small bit of light to her room. The clock on her nightstand had not proceeded much since the last time she'd checked.

She hated this. Laying in bed like this, waiting to sleep. She very much preferred when she fell asleep quickly, without effort. But the more she worried about falling asleep, the more her anxiety kept her sleep elusive. Worse still, she hated laying in bed at night alone with her thoughts. Normally her mind was focused on whatever task was at hoof. But with nothing to focus on, her mind wandered.

Sure, it was fun at first. Mentally working out logic puzzles, game theory, and paradoxical puzzles. But as the night wore on, it became more bothersome. Like that one time, a long time ago, she did that one thing, that was a little embarrassing to her, even though it was really minor, but now her irrational mind was magnifying it into this catastrophic transgression. She shook her head in frustration and checked the clock again. Time seemed to have entered the no-passing zone. She tossed and turned and kicked the blankets off. Even in the dim light, looking down at herself, she could clearly make out the lighter fur of her brother's lower half. She thought about Shining.

She still felt bad about what had happened earlier, grabbing him like that. She didn't know what had come over her. But all she knew was that she was better than that. He had been better than that his whole life living with this... thing. He deserved better than how she'd acted. She wondered if he was having as much trouble sleeping as she was. She climbed out of her bed and headed down the hall.

His door was closed, but only most of the way. She peeked through the door at the dim silhouette of his body laying in his bed. She pushed the door open slowly and quietly walked inside. He didn't stir. His eyes were closed and his breathing was slow and steady. He was clearly asleep. Twilight just stood there and watched her brother sleep, rather envious of his peaceful slumber. She had second thoughts about disturbing him. She'd already made things difficult enough for him. It seemed unfair to ask this of him too. But it wasn't her intention to keep him awake. She just needed help getting to sleep herself. That was all of the rationalization she needed to give herself.

"Shining?" Twilight whispered, and then asked at a normal volume, "Shining?" His breathing skipped a bit, taking a deep breath as his eyelids fluttered, squinting toward the direction of the voice.

"What is it Twilie?" he asked.

"I can't sleep," she said. At first he said nothing, waiting for whatever the second part of the statement was, other than just a status report in the middle of the night. He didn't know what to make of it.

"Okay..." he trailed off. She'd just woken him from a stone sleep. He wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders.

"I... had a bad dream," she lied. But the sentence had a bit more familiarity in this context. Shining blinked at her, unsure of what it was she was getting at. The last time she came into this room while he was sleeping like this, she was a little filly who'd only just gotten her cutie mark, asking if she could sleep in his bed. She was a young mare now. She'd been living on her own at the school dorms for a few years now. Surely she was capable of handling a bad dream on her own. She just stood there with pleading eyes.

Damn those eyes.

He sighed and shifted over in the bed, lifting the covers. She climbed in beside him as he rolled toward the wall against the bed, facing away from her.

"Thanks," she said.

The twin bed had gotten significantly smaller, it seemed, in the intervening years. Twilight reached over to lay her hoof across him to hug him while they slept.

She just listened to the sound of his heartbeat. It was steady as a metronome and it sounded like his heart was beating her name.

Twilight felt her eyelids becoming very heavy. As she listened to the gentle rhythm, sleep took her.

Shining Armor stirred from his sleep some time later. He didn't even have to look at his clock to know that it was not even close to the wee morning hours. He thought he had remembered Twilight getting in bed with him. But as he looked in front of him, he didn't see her. It was probably just a weird dream from his memories of when they were younger.
