Chapters Kix an Mint; Uncertain Future
‘Yet another school, another bunch of names Ah have ta remember than forget.’ The sight o' the schoolhouse coming closer inta view brings ta mind all the friends Ah've made an left behind in the past few years. As each face flashes through mah mind Ah can’ help but sink deeper inta the growin sadness. “Pa, why..... Why do we have ta move around so much? Why couldn’ we have stayed back in Neighsville?”
“Ah'll explain it ta ya when yer older, Ah promise.” As he answers the schoolhouse is right in front of us. With a smile he playfully gives me a noogie and we step inside. “Howdy ma'am, mah name's Kix and Ah'm here ta register man daughter fer the year if it ain' too late.” He addresses the cerise colored mare with three flowers that are smiling fer a cutie mark.
“Greetings and welcome to Ponyville. My name's Cheerilee and I'm the teacher here. As a matter of fact you are just in time, tomorrow is the cut off for registration. What is your name?” Her smile is bright as she looks at me after shaking pa's hoof.
“Ah'm Mint, Mint Song Miss Cheerilee. Ah'm lookin forward ta mah time here.” As the lie near the end rolls off may tongue pa gives me a small disappointed head shake while starin at me with one eye. Knowin Ah'm caught Ah jus hang may head an speak a little quieter. “Ah'm..... Ah'm sorry Miss Cheerilee. Ah shouldn' have lied like that.”
As pa give me a comfortin hug she looks at me in confusion. “It’s nice to meet you too Mint. What did you lie about?”
“Ah.... Ah’m not really lookin forward ta this schoolyear.” The answer comes tenatively after a minute of nervous shiftin. ‘What a way ta make a first impression on mah new teacher, even if it’s gonna be fer a year. Ah bet she doesn’ like me now.’
“Why are you not looking forward to learning?”
Before Ah can answer pa speaks up as he tights his hug. “We've..... Moved around alot these past few years. We've never been able ta stay in one place long enough fer her ta spend more than one school year at the previous places we lived. It's made it hard fer her ta make friends or get comfortable. Ah'll talk ta ya more about it later if ya'd like.”
“Alright, but I will have to discuss this with FPS even though I don’t think you’re abusing her. Anyway here are the forms to fill out, make sure she gets her shots soon.” A smile follows a head nod before she hands us a stack o’ papers an a pen.
“What is FPS an why does she have ta contact them?” Ah watch as he fills out the forms while Cheerilee goes outside.
“They're a government run group that investigates reports o' foal abuse or neglect. It stands fer Foal Protection Services....”
“Wh- why does she have ta contact em? Ya ain’t abusin me an Ah don’ think you’re neglectful either. Does this..... Does this mean Ah’ll have ta..... Live in an orphanage? Will ya be able ta visit me? What if.....”
A strong hug breaks mah train o’ thought as he pulls me close. “Don’ you worry none. It’s jus routine because o’ how often we’ve moved lately. Hopefully with this big break comin up we’ll be able ta find permanent residence.” As he smiles at me reassuringly Ah jus nod an smile back. “Now why don’ ya go outside an play on the playground. Use up some o’ that endless energy ya got while Ah finish up the paperwork.”
“Ok pa, an thank ya. Ah know Ah’ve been..... Upset fer how much we’ve moved but thank ya fer bein the best dad ya can.” Ah give a quick hug an smile before racin outside.
Despite the beautiful day outside an the crowd o’ ponies walkin about none really pay much attention ta me and playin alone quickly becomes borin. As Ah’m about ta lazily push the merry-go-round a voice from behind startles me. “So, you must be new here.”

After Ah release her from the quick hug Ah can’ help but laugh as she scrambles ta be outside, leavin me ta the paperwork. “Kix, I just sent a letter to princess Twilight. Again it is just protocol for us teachers. Have you ever been in contact with FPS before?”
“Naw, never. Though Ah’m not too worried about it an Ah don’ blame ya fer doin what ya have ta. But if ya wanna know now..... Ah've only been able ta get seasonal jobs. Ah don' know why but all the jobs Ah've had never did turn inta somethin permanent. Though hopefully Ah finally got the big break we've been needin an it'll let us settle down finally.” Ah finish the paperwork as Ah speak, mah gaze goin from it ta the teacher.
“I understand, and I wish you the best of luck. Now how far has she progressed in school when she has been in one?”
With a chuckle Ah pull out Mint's report cards from the last three years an hand em over. “She ain' been a straight A student, but she does her best. As ya can tell she struggles alot with language an math.”
“Let's see here, for history she has repeatedly gotten a B+ on the vast majority of her report cards, more specifically the last eight with no comments. Science has seemed to level off at a B after slowly improving since her E on the oldest report card. Says the one area she does best in is biology. For math she hasn’t gotten any better than a C-. And finally her language has never risen above a D? I take it is mostly because of her accent?” Cheerilee comments as she reads over the stack of past cards. Ah’m guessin she’s tryin ta get a feel fer her weak spots in learnin.
“Yea, none o’ the old teachers gave her much wiggle room in that regard.”
“Alright, I shall keep that in mind. It also says here her favorite extracarricular class and after school program is music? Is that her own choice or what you influenced her to do?” The cards are neatly put back in order an hoofed over as she asks.
“Ah guess ya can say in a way Ah’ve inluenced her. Ah play the guitar alot at home an do alot o' practicing with mah band. She grew up with it but she made those choices on her own. She's actually been workin on a few songs o' her own and they ain’ too bad.”
A smile curls her lips as she listens. Before she can continue the door bursts open an who Ah can only assume is princess Twilight judgin by her horn an wings steps inside. Her expression neutral as she approaches the kneeling Cheerilee. “You don’t have to do that Cheerilee. I came as soon as I read your letter. What exactly is this all about?” As she finishes she finlly takes notice o’ me and offers a smile. “Hello there, you must be new to Ponyville. I’m Twilight Sparkle and I didn’t know Cheerilee had other business. I hope you don't mind but I have to talk to her about an urgent matter.”
Greetings ma'am, Ah’m Kix. Yes Ah’m new here and if yer referin ta Ms. Cheerilee’s letter ta FPS then Ah’m the one the its about.” Mah straight forwardness about the situation cause a flood o’ emotions ta cross the newly crowned princess’ face. ‘Ah hope this don’ end poorly fer us. An Ah hope she didn’ get the wrong impression.’
“I don’t think he is treating his daughter poorly, but I did have to follow protocol when I heard how often Kix has moved with his daughter.” The teacher steps in before the princess has a chance ta respond. Ah guess in an attempt ta diffuse the situation a lil.
“Alright, I’ll listen to what he has to say.”
“Well ma’am, Ah’ll admit Ah haven’ provided mah daughter Mint the stable o’ lives lately. It’s been hard fer me ta turn a temporary job inta somethin permanent. Despite that problem Ah’ve provided the best Ah could fer her an we’ve never moved durin the school year ta give her some semblance o' stability.” The short term explanation comes after taking a few breaths an a minute ta choose may words. ‘Please let her know Ah'm telling the truth.'
“Are you a single parent? What happened to her mom?”
“Yes Ah’m raisin her mahself with some help from mah bandmates. As fer her mother..... Its..... She waited till Ah was recovered from mah injuries back when Mint was born an able ta care fer her before leavin us. She's now livin in Manehatten an recently got back somewhat inta Mint's life.”
“So why couldn’t she take her in temporarily and why didn’t she take Mint with her?” As the question and answer session continies she begins jottin down notes while listenin.
“First Mint didn’ wanna stay with her even when offered the chance ta. As fer why her mom didn’t take her, it’s mah fault. She was angry with me an didn’t want a reminder of what she once had.”
“Could she have stayed at your parents then?”
“Nope, right now me an mah folks are..... Not on speakin terms an haven’ been fer a long time now. They don’ even know about their grandaughter.”
“What happened between them and you?”
“They wanted ta turn me inta somepony Ah didn’t wanna be an kept pushin no matter how hard Ah fought. Eventually Ah ran away. A month later Ah found out they disowned me.” Ah can’ help but feel a pang of regret mixed with anger as Ah think back on those two days in particular.
“Alright, I would like to speak to your daughter alone before I leave. But first do you have some place to stay and some kind of job?” The purple alicorn’s expression softens a bit as she puts her papers down and looks at me.
“We’re stayin at a hotel room fer now. As far as jobs go Ah got a few leads Ah’m gonna check out once done here.”
At this point Miss Cheerilee finally speaks up. “Princess I was actually about to suggest that he should check out The Cider Mill. They are looking for a new band to hire on.”
“Alight, right now that is my main concern. If you can get a job lined up and someplace more stable and fitting I’ll add that to my repot to FPS. But before I send it I need to talk to your daughter first.”
“Fair enough, she’s out on the playground. Ah’ll go get her.”

“Yea, Ah jus moved here. Ah'm Mint, nice ta.....” As Ah hold may hoof ta shake all the filly does is brush by me an gives me a look over while walkin around me. It's at this time Ah notice her tiara and her cutie mark. Her grey coated friend hangs back a little an jus smirks while adjusting her glasses.
“I don't really care who you are blank flank. I’m Diamond Tiara and I’m the richest filly in Ponyville. Just know that I’m the top dog in here in school. If I tell you to do something you do it, understand?” Her tone and body language take me by suprise as she pushes her muzzle against mine in an attempt ta intimidate me.
In annoyance Ah push her away which Ah guess is somethin she has never had happen ta her before. “Ah don’ care how rich ya are Di, never get in may face like that again unless ya wanna fight. Ah don' know who let ya grow up with that kinda thinking but Ah won' let ya push me around, got it.”
“Oh she is in such trouble Diamond. Fighting when school hasn't even started yet, that will not be a good mark for you.” Her friend giggles after checking on Diamond Tiara. “You sound like you're related to the Apples, and also look like one of them as well.”
“Yeah, why don’t you go back to the farm and wallow in the pig sty. Maybe then you’ll smell alot better and will finally make a......” A startled oomph finishes her sentance as Ah tackle her from the side. Thankfully it rained earlier and the impact took us close enough to a large mud puddle.
With a snort Ah knock off her tiara while pinnin her down onto her belly. “Ya know Di, Ah heard mud facials are meant ta make one look better, lets see how true that is.” An with a protesting shout Ah shove her head inta the mud. Even goin as far ta rub her face in it as she struggles. After a few seconds o' her flailin about her friend knocks me off.
“Now you are in serious trouble. Just wait till my mom and dad hear about this. My mom is the school board presi.....”
“Mint there’s somepony who..... What is goin on out here?” Pa comes out as he notices mud drippin from Diamond Tiara an three o’ us in fightin stances. “Mint, what is goin on an who are these two fillies?”
“Are you her father?” Tiara asks as he steps between us. His expression disappointed.
“Yea Ah am, an who are ya?”
“I'm Diamond Tiara and this is my friend Silver Spoon. Your daughter is a bully. All we were trying to do was be friends but she instead attacked us.”
“Ah only attacked ya cause ya wouldn't leave me alone. Ya were saying some mean things and demandin Ah do what ya tell ta do!”
“All three o' ya inside now. Diamond an Silver, go talk ta Miss Cheerilee. Mint there is somepony who wants ta talk ta ya. Afterwards we're gonna have a sit down with Miss Cheerilee and figure out how ta avoid this situation again.”
“I would say it was nice meeting you Mint, but that would be lying.” Her snarky retort causes me ta snort back in anger as we enter the buildin with pa behind us.
“Miss Cheerilee these two need ta talk ta ya. Princess Twilight this is mah daughter Mint. Ah’ll jus be outside.” Ah watch as the two bullies go with the teacher. Giving me one last mean look before Ah turn ta the purple alicorn in front o’ me.
“Hello there Mint, I’m Twilight Sparkle. Before we begin what was that about with Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon?”
“They were being mean an wouldn' leave me alone even though Ah asked.” Despite not makin eye contact Ah can feel the pincess’ gaze of disapointment directed straight at me.
“Well you cannot attack a classmate no matter what they do. I want you to applogize to them when we finish up ok.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Good, now I understand you have moved around alot lately and you refused to live with your mother when she offered to take you in for a bit correct?”
Her question startles me an without thinkin Ah rush her. Mah arms wrappin around her hooves while Ah look up at her. “Please..... Ah..... Ah don’ wanna live with ma. Please don’ take me away from pa! Ah’ll behave. Ah’ll even do what Diamond tells me ta, jus please don’ take me away!”
A hoof curls around mah back gently. “And why don’t you want to live with her?”
“She..... She abandoned me an pa. She left us and only jus got back in touch with us a few months ago. Plus Ah don’ wanna grow up in some big fancy house.” Ah can feel the tears begin ta well as Ah hold onta the princess tightly. ‘Ah gotta try but Ah don’ think it’ll matter much.’
“How does your dad treat you?” A feather tenderly wipes away the tears as they start ta flow.
“He treats me very well. He don' hit or yell at me. An he does his best ta help me out whenever Ah need it. Ah know we don' have a place ta call our own yet but he's doing his best.”
“I can tell he loves you and I will add that to my report which will include my recommendation. Before I leave have you ever met your grandparent before?”
“Grandparents? What're those?” Ah look at her in confusion as she jots down somethin before stand-in up.
“Grandparents are your mother and father's parents. I don'the have anymore questions at this time Mint, but the FPS representative will also need to talk to you soon. And I will follow up with you and your dad in two weeks. It was a pleasure meeting you Mint. I hope you enjoy your stay in Ponyville. And try not to get into too much trouble, ok?"
“Thank ya princess. It was an honor ta meet ya as well. An Ah'll try not ta get inta much trouble.” As a goodbye wave is shared between the two of us she takes off. Once she disappears Ah let out a sigh an head back inside. Ah stop next ta Ms Cheerilee an look at the pair she was addressin, another sigh blows through mah lips as Ah extend a hoof. “Ah’m sorry Diamond. Ah shouldn’ have let my anger take over like that. Think we can forget what happened an start over?”
“Hmph, well I DON'T accept your apology and I’m not sorry. Why should I have to belittle myself to make a blank flank like you feel better?” The two fillies turn an head out the building leaving both Miss Cheerilee an pa stunned at ther outburst an rude brush off.
“I'm sorry. I've been trying to figure out what their problem is and how to help but with no progress so far. Just let me know if they bother you too much Mint. I'm looking forward to having you join us. And it was a pleasure meeting you Kix.”

Chapter Two; Meetin the Band

As we head inta town from the schoolhouse Ah look down at Mint an smile “What was it like meetin the youngest princess?”
“Ah like her. She didn’ seem like such a hoity high horse like Ah expected. She said she’ll have ta checkup on us in two weeks.” The start o’ the missin bounce in her step is startin ta return as we meetup with the rest o’ the band.
“How’d it go kiddo?” Snares, a dark green pegasus stallion with light blue mane an the band’s drummer asks as the round o’ hugs starts with him.
“It was somethin Ah didn't expect, an..... Ah.....” Ah watch as she struggles ta find the right words an keep the story short.
“C’mon Mint, out with it. We haven’t got all day.” The lead guitarist an the bands other singer by the name of Onyx Blaze urges. He’s a black unicorn with a red an orange mane an tail.
“Well..... Ah got ta meet princess Twilight who seemed..... Worried about how often me an pa moved the past few years. Ah also met mah teacher who seems nice enough. Ah..... Ah also met..... A couple o’ bullies. A pair o’ spoiled rich fillies.” She says as she breaks away from Berry Rock, an earth pony with a green mane an yellow coat who is the panist.
“Oh wow, that is somethin special, meeting a princess. What brought about this chance meeting?” Sweet Spice asks. She's a fiddle player an another singer who is a white coated pegasus with a butter colored mane an a bright green streak down the middle. Her wings match her mane color, the inner feathers are green with the outer feathers being yellow. She also happens ta be engaged ta Berry.
“Well she..... Miss Cheerilee mah new teacher had ta send a report ta FPS because of our past moves an the letter must gotten ta her first.”
“Kix you BUCKING idiot. How many times have I told you that you needed to find a stable job! And before you say something I don't give a buck how much you don't suit many of those jobs! You need stability for her!” Sweet turns an pushes her muzzle inta mine threateningly before turning ta Mint, givin her a lovin nuzzle an kiss. “I wouldn’t worry to much about it sweetie. As much of an IDIOT your dad can be he does love you. All he needs is to provide you with some stability.” She glares at me before turnin an walk away, an annoyed swish of her tail directed straight at me.
‘What the hay ever drove me ta bring this crazy mare inta the band anyway. Oh wait mah stupidity an her talent. Ah wish we could get along as well as we do onstage off the stage.’
“Hey, what’s going on? What is the shouting about?” The final members of our small group, Emerald Ace an Emerald Fire ask in unison. They’re the equipment managers an oganizers for the band who happen to be crystal twins with red coats and green manes.
Berry answers as Sweet storms inta the hotel room. “Yeah, Sweet is upset at Kix, again. How is the equipment looking?”
‘An there goes one o' her temper tantrums. How Berry can put up with her Ah'll never know.’
“What did you do this time Kix? I swear you two fight more than any other pair I know.” Ace says as he hands me the room key.
“What you don’t trust us by now Berry? That hurts alot, maybe we should quit bro.” Fire answers as she lugs in the rest o’ the baggage.

Ah jus watch as the usual ritual is played out by the adults. “Well..... Mint’s new teacher contacted FPS cause of our many moves. That's it.” Pa turns ta Ace an says with a sigh.
“I'm just joking with you Fire, sheesh. You honestly think I was serious?” Berry says defensively as he backs away from her.
With the group splitting up we head inside an find our rooms, me an pa dragging our share o’ the luggage inside. “Alright Mint, Ah know there is somethin bothering ya. Is it those two fillies?”
Ah hesitate ta answer. Ah know Ah should tell him all that is botherin me but the thought o' tellin him scares me fer some reason. “Yea, Ah jus..... Is that what Ah'm gonna turn inta? A mean, self centered filly when ya start gettin famous?”
With a chuckle he pulls me close an hugs me tight. “Naw it won’ an you wanna know why?”
‘Ah jus..... He hasn’ led me astray yet, but Ah’m still..... Ah jus hope he don’ dig deeper.’ “Why?”
“Cause first ya’ll know what it's like being on both sides o’ the fence when it comes ta dealing with others. Second ya were never raised ta be mean ta others though with what ya did today will need ta be addressed an corrected.” He gives one of' his playful noogies an smile. “An third ya know the kinda punishments ya'll be gettin if ya do even once. In fact fer starters no practicin with the band nor workin on any o’ yer songs fer a week. Woulda been longer but after yer attempt ta apologize Ah decided ta reduce yer sentence. An ya know the others’ll enforce it when Ah’m not around.”
A sigh escapes mah lips as Ah nuzzle him before we finish unpackin. ‘Ah hope yer right, an yea Ah know exactly what’ll happen if ya find out.’ Mah thought leaves a sour expression on may face which thankfully he can' see. “Ah know, unfortunately.” ‘Hopefully aunt Sweet’ll be jus like how she normally is when Ah'm on.....’
“An don' even think yer gonna get some sympathy from Sweet. Ah know all about it an Ah talked ta Berry who talked ta her about it.” His words come while he's still facin away from me.
With a grumble Ah glare at him which only earns me a chuckle. “So what are we gonna be doing fer the rest o' the day pa?”
“Yer gonna be staying here with the twins while the rest o' us go out an have some fun.”
“Bu- but, why the twins? Why not atleast Onyx?” Ah hate bein watched by them. While they do care bout me they can be the strictest when followin pa’s punishments or rules.
“They said they need ta stick back an make sure everythin is set fer our first major gig. You best behave fer them or else.” As he waps me in a hug Ah can’ help but swallow nervously at his final words before he heads out with the rest o’ the band.

“So you got any leads or are we gonna have to play it by ear, again?” Sweet asks as we stop in the town square, her voice tinted with a little bit o' anger.
“In fact Miss Cheerilee suggested that we go check out the Cider Mill. She said they're always on the lookout fer a band ta perform.”
At the name Onyx groans before addin. “Please don't..... Its a bar, isn't it? Damnit Kix specially with this current issue you can't be in there, you know how likely you are to be drinking nightly! You remember what happened back in El Marso? Besides, if they find out you've been drinking and drinking at your normal capacity they'll take Mint! Then how would you feel, huh?”
“Ah remember, an Ah promise Ah won’ drink as much as Ah normally do.....”
At this point Sweet steps in front of me an her face turns inta an ugly, angry snarl. “Kix I bucking swear, you won’t have a SINGLE drop of alchohol or so help me Celestia I’ll kill you. Do you understand me!”
“Alright Sweet Ah won’. And Ah appreciate yer help in tryin ta get me straightened out.”
“Hey we’re friends man and we got your back. Plus, Mint is a cool foal, it won’t be fair for you two to be seperated. I know how you’d react if that were to happen, of coarse that is if Sweet doesn’t kill you first.” Berry throws his hoof around mah shoulder an grins, causin his fiancee ta back away some. “Now you know where this place is?”
“Yep its this way.” ‘Jeeze these guys’re goin way overboard with this topic.’
“Oh jeeze, Kix’ bar sense is already kicking in.”
“That's enough Sweet, knock it off.” Snares growls as we find ourselves in front o' the buildin. “And we are not going to let you step in there alone Kix.”
With a sigh we head inside an make our way ta the bar. “Hi, may I get you guys anything to drink?” A purple earth pony mare asks with a smile as she finishes putting a tray of glasses into the wash.
“Actually ma'am, can we get some water an talk with yer general manager an owner fer a bit, please.”
“Sure thing honey, I like your accent by the way.” Her smile only grows as she turns ta fill our order, a little bit o' flirty swing o' her flank is added in may direction.
“What the..... Is this really Kix? First you ordered water without can argument like you'd normally have then a cute mare like her flirts a little and you don't immediately chase her down. I demand that you show yourself changeling!” Berry's outburst is jus loud enoughcta draw the attention o’ the other three who were takin in the possible venue.
Before mahself or the others can retort two stallions come up ta us with smiles, offerin their hooves. “Welcome to the Cider Mill. I’m Cider and this is my general manager Spirits. We were told you wanted to talk to us, is everything ok?”
“Howdy Ah'm Kix an these are mah friends Snares, Onyx Blaze, Berry Rock an Sweet Spice.” As Ah introduce them a round o’ hoofshakes follows. “An nothins wrong, in fact we heard ya were lookin fer a band ta perform fer three or four nights a week.”
“As a matter of fact we are. Our last band got sorta famous and ended up moving to Manehatten. Have you guys ever performed live in a bar like this before?” Spirits asks as Cider's expression turns thoughtful.
“Yep, we've.....”
“Sorry to interrupt but are you Kix Brooks?” Cider says as a light goes off in his head.
“Yea why?”
“You played in my brother's bar last year in Neighville. He told me you guys might be drifting around here. He was upset you left and says that bar hasn't been as packed since you guys stopped performing there. Now knowing that I am conflicted, on one hoof I would like to see if you can pull in those size crowds here but on the other I don’t want to have you around for a time and then you up and leave as well.”
“Well Ah can tell ya we’re gonna be lookin ta hang our hat here permanently if we can get a permanent job. Though durin the summer Ah will admit we’ll be goin out on tour fer our first time. Other than that we’ll be stayin here.”
“Well I guess we can give it a try, though the fact you're gonna be away for the summer is a little bit of a concern. We'll figure something out when the time comes. When can you guys start?”
“Tomorrow if that ain' an issue.”
“Tomorrow our other band is performing, come back the day after and we'll give you guys a shot.” Spirits says after lookin at Cider. “You forgot the schedule again didn't you boss?”
“No need for me to remember since I got you. Is noon gonna be good for you guys?”
“Sure thing, thank ya fer the opportunity. We promise not ta let ya down, or do our best not ta.”
“That'll work I guess, now why don't you guys enjoy a drink to celebrate.” Another round o' shakes ensues before he walks off an checks on his other customers.
Once he gets outa ear shot we spend some time celebratin. As promised the others kept to their word o' keeping me from the booze. ‘Ah wonder if she's always this friendly ta the guests or what.’ Ah can' help but watch as she works, any idea formin in mah head. “Hey Onyx, try an flirt with her some. We know ya got the magic touch when it comes ta mares.”
“First off, if my ‘touch' was so magical why is Sweet planning on marrying Berry instead of me, huh? And second why do you want me t..... Wait, could it be that a pretty mare like her has actually FAILED to catch the eye of Kix?”
Before Ah can respond Sweet turns ta face Onyx. “The reason I rejected you was because I saw you hittin on Fire AFTER you failed with three other mares. I watched you all night prior to you asking, also the two mares I saw leaving your room that morning had a bit of an influence. I might not like Kix off stage, but atleast he doesn't try to chase as much tail in a single night as you do. Finally Kix isn't interested in just their nightly companionship, but in actually getting to know them.”
‘Woah, Sweet actually saying somethin good about me? She mus be sick or somethin. Ah know that had to hurt her ta say that.’ “Ok guys, jus forget about it. Yea Ah think she’s interested and yea Ah wanna get ta know her. But as ya’ll said Ah need ta try an.....”
Mah speech is interrupted as she yet again stops in front of us, her gaze immediately turning ta me. “I never did introduce myself. It's Velvet, nice to meet you Kix, Sweet, Berry and Onyx. I'm actually about to take my break, mind joining me at a booth?”
“Sure, go clear it with yer boss an we’ll be waitin fer ya.” Before she leaves she takes down our orders an we head ta the table. Stories an jokes fly across the table faster than a Wonderbolts. Most of' the jokes are directed at Onyx though some are spread evenly ta myself an the couple.
After the bartender arrives with five orders an splits them she slides in next ta me with a smile. “You know, I completely forgot to introduce myself. I'm Velvet, its a pleasure to meet you and I can't wait to see you guys perform.” Soon after we make the round o' introductions the conversation picks up again. It started a little slow but once we got used ta Velvet it picked up the pace.
All throughout the conversation Velvet ocasionally brushes her hind leg or a forehoof along mah arms an legs. Her gaze also at times flits over me. In turn Ah reciprocate her touches, jokes an smiles which fer some reason draws Sweet's anger. Half way through the lunch Sweet looks at Velvet an her next words shock everypony, though Ah don’ know who is in the most shock. “You know, Kix and I are engaged, so I'd appreciate it if you stop hitting on him. Kix outside, right now.”
In confusion Ah follow as the others watch us. Ah can sense Velvet is a little put off as we stop on the sidewalk in view of our table. “Kix I don't like her. I get a feeling she's nothing but trouble and you got enough to deal with. Before you ask what this bad feeling is I'm not a hundred percent sure, it could be that she's just a gold digger and thought you would be an easy mark.” Ah watch as her eyebrows rise up a little an after a few seconds she repositions me so Ah'm in her position. “Just watch Kix.”
Sure enough as Ah stand there watchin Ah notice Velvet startin ta try an flirt with Berry ta no success an finally Onyx who seems very receptive o’ her advances. “Yer right Sweet, she is nothing but trouble.. But why did ya do this fer me?”
“As I said I might not like you alot, but you do have some of my respect. You don't need her kind of trouble at this juncture. And Mint doesn't need to be around a mare like her.” Once she finishes we make our way inside an rejoin the others as Velvet gets back ta work. After payin our tab an gettin outside Sweet turns ta Onyx an glares at him. “Forget about that mare. If I EVER see you with her or hear about you being with her I swear you are gonna wish you were dead, got it.”
With sweat pourin down his body an his eyes shrunken in fear Onyx gives the slightest nod. With his answer we head back ta our rooms. Sweet an Berry nuzzlin and talkin in front o’ us an Onyx is a barely walkin, tremblin mess behind me.

Chapter Three: A Familiar Face Returns

“Do Ah have ta be with ya while yer working? Why can' Ah stay in mah room at the least?” Ah ask once pa leaves our sight. Fire is standin there in the doorway with a look clearly sayin why as she waits fer me ta come out. “Do ya not trust me or somethin?”
“Come on Mint, we got work to do. As for why you can’t stay in here is that we can’t do our job while wondering what you’re up to. Also being with us means you have the least likely chance to get into more trouble.” She answers in a huffy voice while steppin inta the room and nudges me out.
“Besides, if something were to happen to you we’d have an earful from Kix. It happened once to us, we don’t want another flank chewing like that again.” Ace says as he rounds the corner ta check on me. With another nudge Ah’m lined up behind him and the two march me towards the stored equipment.
As they begin ta pull out the instruments Ace looks at me as Ah'm sittin jus inside their room. “You're good there Mint, do NOT move from that spot.” A chuckle from the two follows mah grumble o’ frustration as Ah decide ta lay down.
“Wake up Mint, it’s almost lunch time.” The voice, which Ah assume is Ace's but not completely sure, urges as Ah'm rocked fer some reason. Grumbling at the motion Ah yawn an’ readjust ta get comfortable again.
Reluctantly Ah wake up after a couple minutes o' relentless urgin. After some teasin about mah bedhead an staggerin we finally head out. The rest o’ the day goes by slowly as the twins finish workin. Once pa an’ the others get back they immediately spread the word about their trial gig in two days. ‘Ah hope Ah'll get the chance ta perform with the band atleast once like back in Detrot.’
The next day starts off early and with the normal routine o' exercises followed by breakfast. “Fer mosta the day Mint ya'll be be watched by Ace an Fire again. But it won' be fer too long, hour ta hour an a half. Afterwards Ah'll take ya shopping fer yer school supplies.”
“Ok pa. Jus’ curious, Ah know ya said no music but..... Could Ah instead stay an watch ya practice please?”
“Nope, yer still on punishment. If Ah were ta show ya leniency even once it won' make the rest o’ yer sentence worthwhile. So yer stuck with them again.”
‘Atleast Ah tried an’ it won’ be like yesterday thankfully.’ Grumpily Ah follow the shiny duo after breakfast as they start gettin the instruments setup, the amps hooked up an’ the PA. system properly placed and plugged. ‘Can’ wait ta get off o’ this punishment. Ah already miss helpin out with setup an’ equipment checks.’ While the pair busy themselves fer the practice once again Ah find mahself layin down in an out o’ the way spot with a frustrated snort.
The setup an’ sound test takes a little longer than it normally does. The biggest problem is gettin the lead guitar an’ drums soundin right, specially since the lead guitar also is actin as the bass. The whole thing ends up takin about twenty ta thirty minutes, jus in time ta knock me loose from sleep’s teasin embrace. With a string o' mumbled arguments Ah follow as the Emerald twins head off ta where the spare equipment an' supplies are stored.
“Ok kiddo, it’s time for lunch, lets get going.” Ace announces about an hour later while givin me a nudge ta get goin. With a sigh Ah fall inta step between them as usual, this time the twins are on either side o’ me. “Your dad and the others are going to meet up with us once they're finished.”
“Can we go ta that one place we passed yesterday please? It looked like a good spot fer lunch.”
Fire jus’ gives a giggle an' looks at me. “What, Sugarcube Corner? Sorry Mint but you don't deserve to go there right now.” She shakes her head while watchin as An go back ta bein grumpy.
“Hey is this..... Oh Mint, I’ve been looking for you or Kix. H.....” A familiar yet strange voice is interrupted as the crystal twins turn an’ face the strange pony.
“Who are you and why are you looking for Mint or Kix?” Ace an’ Fire challenge at the same time. Their body posture a little aggressive while puutin themselves between me an the stranger.
“I’m.....” It finally clicks in mah mind who’s voice it is. Slowly Ah begin ta turn.
‘If Ah’m right why is.....’ Mah thoughts go still as Ah face the pony. The last pony in the world Ah expected ta be seein at this point in time.

“Alright guys, ya know this is basically a trial run fer tomorrow, so le’ts keep this practice short an simple. We’ll run through two songs apiece an’ two duet songs. Afterwards we'll set up a rotation.” With the others agreein we start off with a few warm up tunes an vocals.
“So are we gonna practice some of our own stuff or continue to be a cover band?” Onyx asks while getin inta position an’ makes minor adjustments ta his microphone stand.
“We'll be working on both Onyx, you know that. I know you have a new song written you want to perform but our original songs aren’t yet well known enough.” Sweet grumbles as she runs the bow across the strings a few times before continuin. “You’ve been a part of this band since it started. You should know better by now.”
“Ok guys enough bickerin, lets get down ta business.” A chuckle escapes mah throat as Ah finish adjustin mah headset microphone then put mah hat on. Once we’re ready Ah nod an Snares begins the count.
We spend the next five minutes warming up an gettin inta sync with each other. As usual the five minute warmup is extended by ten minutes o' readjustments, comments an general chatter. “Ok Onyx ya started us off last time correct? So how bout we start off with a duet with ya an’ Sweet.”
The pair starts off the real time practice. Despite a few expected bumps it goes really well an the hour passes quickly. During the practice we work on somethin we rarely try, an that's switchin songs an’ singers on the fly. Gettin the timin right is the absolute hardest part o’ the practice an’ takes alot o’ time ta get it right. The second ta last song is one o’ Sweet’s an’ as we get inta the final chords o' the song the hard transition practice pays off.
As we begin ta play the final few chords o' her song instead o’ playin it out we immediately switch ta the last song we’re gonna practice. A smile graces all our lips as we finish. Despite the sweat an’ huffin Ah can tell we're all in good spirits.
“That was a really good practice guys, still need ta work on gettin our transition smoother but it still sounded good.” We begin ta get our stuff packed up with jokes flyin ta keep up our high spirits. ‘If we don’ impress tomorrow Ah'll have ta find somethin else. Ah’m not losin Mint no matter what.’ “Ok guys, now what songs do we wanna perform fer tomorrow?”
We quickly come up with the line up fer tomorrow along with the songs we plan on performin’. Along with the six cover songs we added two o' our own songs. One fer myself an' Onyx, the other is fer Sweet. As soon as eveythin' is placed back inta their proper cases we lock up an’ head out ta collect Mint an’ her babysitters.
“OK guys, lets go get some lunch. I'm starving.” With Berry’s announcement we head on out, the jokes an’ laughs flyin at full speed as we exit.
As Ah round the corner o’ the buildin’ a familiar voice calls out, Mint an’ the twins have their backs ta me. “Kix? Oh thank Celestia. How you been?” A familiar mare asks. Ah knew the mare was gonna be showin’ up some time soon but didn’ expect her today. Her familiarity with me causes the others, includin’ the twins, ta stare at me in confusion.
“Who is she Kix? A groupie that decided to follow us?” Sweet asks defensively as she recovers first an’ begins ta circle the newcomer. “Hmph, I guess stranger things have happened. Never expected such a high class mare to be into our type of music.”
“Knock it off Sweet, Ah knew her since before Ah started gettin inta music. Everypony, this is Amethyst Rain, she.....”

Ah step in front o' pa and finish his sentence. “She's mah mother, guys.” With a smile Ah turn an wrap mah arms around her neck. “How ya been ma? What brings ya here so suddenly?” Before she can answer Sweet pushes herself in front o’ ma with their muzzles scrunched. Her eyes are hard, burnin' angry pools o' purple while ma's is scared and frantically goin’ around the room.
“HOW DARE YOU! HOW DARE YOU COME BACK INTO MINT'S LIFE! WHY ARE YOU HERE AFTER STAYING AWAY FOR EIGHT YEARS? GET THE BUCK OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW YOU....” It takes Berry, Onyx an' the twins ta do it but they finally pull her away from ma. Out of' nowhere a hoof flies an' strikes ma's cheek ta mah horror an’ pa’s. “LET ME GO! SHE NEEDS TO GET THE TARTURUS BEATEN OUT OF HER! HOW COULD A MOTHER JUST UP AND ABANDON HER CHILD?! SPECIALLY ONE AS SWEET AS MINT?!” She struggles an’ flails around while bein’ dragged off.
“Ah..... Ah'm sorry ma fer that. She.....”
“It's not your fault Mint, she is right, I really let you down by being away for so long. No matter what I do going forward won't make up for that fact, but I am glad you want me to be a part of your life.” She wraps me in a wing an' arm hug while giving' me a nuzzle. Sweet's rantin’ and angry outbursts can still be heard despite the distance an' walls.
“What brought ya here so soon Amethyst? We weren' expectin' ya fer another month or so.” The questions comes as pa finishes givin' her a hug.
“Well, I decided to go on a mini vacation with a friend of mine. Besides working with that crazy mare what is new with you two?”
“Well, Mint's new teacher filed a report ta FPS cause she thinks Mint ain' in a stable enough environment. Luckily tomorrow we got a trial gig that can work out fer us. Housin’ however is the main issue right now. We'll manage somehow, we always do.” It's at that time mah rumblin' belly announces its need fer food, causing' me ta blush. “We better get some grub before Mint wakes the town up. Wanna join us?”
Mah blush grows even brighter as Ah give pa a mockin’ 'glare. “Sure, where do you suggest going?”
“How ‘bout Sugarcube Corner? That place looked kinda fun.”
Ma is on the verge o' agreein’ befor pa cuts her off. “Sorry Mint, yer still on punishment.” A grumble an' huff passes through mah throat as mah parents fall alittle behind me. Ah can hear them whisperin’ heatedly but Ah can' tell what they're discussin'.
After lunch an' gettin’ mah school supplies both ma an' pa resume talking at a distance where Ah can' hear them. ‘What are they talkin' about? Ah.....’ Mah thoughts are interrupted as an overly friendly seeming earth pony steps in front o' us, grinnin' madly.
As ma an' pa deal with the hyper pink mare mah gaze narrows as Ah spot Diamond Tiara an' Silver Spoon. This time they seem ta be messin' with a group o' three fillies. ‘Seems like they didn’ get the message ta not mess with others.’ Angrily Ah appoach from behind after makin’ sure mah parents aren’ payin’ attention.
Mah approach catches the attention o’ the trio first an’ their reaction causes the rich brats ta stop an’ turn, looks o’ shock an’ some fear crossin’ their muzzles. “Ah thought Ah taught ya a lesson about bullyin’ others. Now leave’em alone and get goin’.” Mah wings flare out as Ah stand in front o’ them, snarlin’.
At mah words they turn around slowly. Upon seein’ mah aggressive stance an’ stare Diamond scrambles over Silver Spoon in an attempt ta make as hasty o’ getaway as possible.
“Thanks uhhh, what’s yer name?” The earth filly with a pink bow an’ red mane says as she approaches. Her companions, a white unicorn with a pink an’ white mane an’ the orange coated pegasus with purple hair approach behind her, smilin’.
“Ah’m Mint, an’ it wasn’ a problem. Ah already dealt with them once, though it got me inta trouble.” The group’s friendliness causes me ta back away some while settin’ me on edge.
“Ah’m Apple Bloom, this here is Sweetie Belle an’ Scootaloo.” She points ta her friends as if she doesn’ notice my slight retreat. “An' we are.....”
“THE CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS!” The trio shout at the same time.
“Well uhhh, it was..... Nice ta meet ya, but Ah gotta get goin'” Hurriedly Ah return ta mah parents, ignoring the shouts of’ the fillies. ‘Great, Ah gotta share a school with not only a pair o' rich brats but also a trio o' energetic fillies who seem ta be a very friendly group. Please Celestia let this upcomin’ school year finish quickly.’

Chapter Four; Time Together and Performance

“What happened that caused FPS to get called on you Kix?” Amethyst’s voice is a mixture o’ concern an’ anger as she walks next ta me. We watch as Mint goes ahead o’ us, givin’ us some privacy. Ah can feel her gaze on me as Ah think how ta best answer her question.
“Her new teacher felt that the lack o’ stability could be negatively affectin’ her. We got a trial run that’ll hopefully lead ta us havin’ an income. The only concern now is ta find permanent housin’.”
Before we can continue our chat is interrupted by an overly friendly mare with a bouncy pink mane an’ tail. It takes us a good twenty minutes of listenin’ ta her drone on an’ on about friends an’ parties before she finally goes off on her own.
“Well that was….. Random. Anyway, please tell me you have at least some idea of where you are going to live.”
“Not yet, but we’re lookin’. We jus’ got here yesterday, it’s gonna take us a little longer than two days ta find a place. Don’ worry, everythin’ll turn out jus’ right.” Ah flash her a reassurin’ smile before we walk inside the diner.
Throughout our lunch me an’ Mint catch up on what Amethyst has been up ta lately an’ we catch her up on what is new with us. A little over an hour after we finish eatin’ we finally make our way back. “Ah’m sorry bout Sweet, ever since she joined us she’s been protective o’ Mint an’ sees her as her daughter.”
“I understand, she seems to be doing a better job of it than I am. Are you two together?”
“Nah, we might work well together on stage, but off? Ya’ll be safer in glass house in a tornado. Speakin’ o’ which, we got a gig tomorrow an’ Mint is gonna need a babysitter, ya interested?”
“Of course, I’d love to. Give us a chance to try and bond….. despite the past.”
The rest o’ the day goes by quickly as Mint an’ mahself meet up with Amethyst fer dinner and go over Mint’s punishment. ‘If only things hadn’ ended badly between us, who knows where we’d be today.’

‘Grr, why do mornins have ta come so early?’ The sunshinin’ through the window falls inconveniently on mah face, ta be more specific directly on mah eyes, burning through the closed lids. Wakin’ up an’ gettin’ outa bed Ah can feel either mahself or the room swayin’ unsteadily. ‘Is this how the adults comin’ from those bars feel? If so they can have it, Ah hate this feelin’.
“Well good morning, did you sleep well?”
‘That doesn’ sound like Sweet, wh….. Oh yea, Ah stayed with ma last night.’ Ah spend a few minutes just standin there till the room stops movin. “It coulda been better, how did ya sleep ma?”
“These beds aren’t the most comfortable, but they work for the short term. We’ll take a shower and then go get ourselves something to eat.”
A smile spreads across mah face as Ah go through mah mornin’ readiness routine. The smile drops immediately from mah muzzle as ma sits me down an’ begins ta groom mah mane. “You need to take better care of yourself Mint, your mane is full of knots. Have you been properly preening your wings?”
“Sweet an’ Onyx have been showin’ me how ta, why?”
“They must not be doing a good job, your feathers are a mess.” Thankfully we’re not out in public as she begins ta show me how ta preen, accordin’ ta her.
‘At Least Ah don’ have ta suffer the humiliation o’ bein’ babied like this in public.’ The treatment seems like it lasts fer hours before she finishes, drawin’ a long sigh o’ relief from me. “We gonna go get some food now? Ah’m starvin’.”
Throughout breakfast me an’ ma spend the time catchin’ up. Her regalin’ me with her life an’ how she’s some stage actress back in Manehattan while Ah tell her bout the happenins o’ mah life. Despite her absence fer all o’ these years Ah can feel some connection with her along with some sorta sense o’ happiness.
“I’m glad to see you’re being well taken care of. You know….. I’ve been thinking, I know you want to stay with your dad, but….. would you….. maybe consider….. coming to Manehattan and visit? Maybe even spend at least a few days with me? With Kix’ permission of coarse.”
Her offer throws me a little an’ causes me ta lean back some. Lookin’ inta her eyes Ah can almost see the disappointed thoughts crossin’ her mind. “Ah’d be interestin’ in visitin’ ta start with ma. Not sure yet how comfortable Ah’d be yet staying the night with ya.” Ah try an’ make mah reply as cheerful as possible. However the delay in mah answer seems ta have the opposite effect.
“That’s….. reasonable. When do you start school? Do you have the proper supplies yet?”
“Ah start in two weeks an’ Ah still need ta get mah supplies.”
“Ok, let’s go and get you your things. You know where the store is?”

“Kix, don’t tell me you let Mint spend the night with her.” Sweet’s tone is barely controlled anger as we wake up an’ start gettin’ ready fer the day. The twins hard at work ensurin’ the equipment is squared away while the rest o’ us get prepared fer our first performance at the bar.
“She needed a babysitter an’ this way with Amethyst watchin’ her we don’ have ta pay fer one. Ah know yer angry at her, but at least try an’ give her the benefit o’ the doubt. She knows what she did was very wrong an’ Ah can tell she’s sorry an’ wants ta try ta rectify the mistake.” Her refusal ta counter mah argument causes me ta sigh as we make our way towards the venue. ‘Ah hope ya aren’ right Sweet an’ that it wasn’ a big mistake.’
“Hey, you guys got here early. Bar’s a little dead right now but you guys can start getting setup on stage. Still got about an hour or so before the lunch crowd comes in.” Cider greets as we enter, takin’ time ta shake hooves quickly before Spirits leads us towards the stage.
“Thanks, glad ya were willin’ ta give us a shot.” As Cider, Spirits an’ mahself go over how this performance is gonna go an’ workin’ out a signal fer fresh water, the others get hard at work settin’ up an’ findin’ the best possible positions fer each o’ us on the small stage.
The sound tests an’ warm-ups take up about thirty minutes or so, leavin’ us jus’ enough time ta make a toast fer a successful night as our tradition dictates. “Hey ya’ll, Ah’m Kix…..”
“I’m the lovely Sweet…..”
“This is Onyx here…..”
“Berry here…..”
“And I’m Snares…..”
“We are a new band, Southern Equestrian Small Town. We hope you enjoy the show.” Once we finish our introduction we start off as planned a little after the expected lunchtime crowd finishes filterin’ in. Our performance lasts throughout lunch an’ once finished Amethyst an’ Mint join us fer a a late meal, much ta Sweet’s ire. Our real performance starts at five pm and fer the next two hours we perform cover songs o’ current or past singers. Unlike a lot o’ the current singers an’ groups we opted to dismiss the flashy special an’ sound effects, instead relyin’ on nothin’ but pure talent.
“Ok everypony, we’re gonna switch things up now. These last two songs are originals fer us. Sweet, ya wanna show’em who they’re runnin’ with?”
“Sure do Kix. Everypony here ready to run with the Fastest Mare in Town?” The crowds roaring response makes her smile grow even bigger as the song starts off. As she begins ta sing Sweet starts off by leanin’ towards the crowd while standin’ at the edge o’ the stage.
“You’ve got the bullets, I’ve got the gun. I’ve got a hankering for getting into something
I hit the bottle, you hit the gas,I heard you can really haul some ass.” At this point she saunters teasinly towards me as Ah play, runnin’ a hoof against mah cheek.
“I’m feeling frisky, you're feeling good, I guess the whiskey is doing what it should
I got the cigarettes, You’ve got a lighter, And when the sun goes down we’ll start a little fire”
“Ain’t no use in trying to slow me down, ‘Cause you’re running with the fastest mare in town
Ain’t you baby? I like ‘em crazy.” As she turns ta face the crowd she deliberately swats me with her tail along the the cheek she was jus’ strokin’ an’ hurries ta Onyx.
“My reputation follows me around, Just makes me want to give them more to talk about
Let’s go to town for a little while, I’ll be wearing nothing but a tattoo and a smile.”
“Ain’t no use in trying to slow me down, ‘Cause you’re running with the fastest mare in town
Ain’t you baby? You’re kinda crazy.” After slidin’ against his side she gives Onyx a smack upside the back o’ his head before makin’ her way ta center stage while we perform the instrumental.
Come on!
“I see the blue lights, we better run. Throw out the bottle and I’ll hide the gun
If he pulls us over I’ll turn on the charm, You’ll be in the slammer and I’ll be on his arm.” With a seductive smile she stands next ta Berry an’ he continues ta play with one hoof while the other circles around Sweet’s midsection.
“Ain’t no use in trying to slow me down, ‘Cause you’re running with the fastest mare in town
Ain’t you baby? Well I told you I was crazy. No I ain’t nobody's baby. Hey!”
“He’s got the bullets, He’s got a gun, I got the hankering for getting into something.”
As we’re playin the final few notes ta Sweet’s song Ah look over at Onyx an’ give him a smile. “Hey Colt, ya ready ta do this?”
“I’m ready to roll Kix.”
Jus’ before we hit the last note we transition ta the final song fer the night seamlessly. Ah look first ta the band then over the crowd, smilin’ widely. “Let’s show’em how we roll.”
(Kix and Onyx) “This is how we roll, We hanging round singing out everything on the radio, We light it up, Light it up, light it up” Me an’ Onyx stand off ta the sides o’ the stage as we start.
(Sweet) “Haha, it’s the Dirty South connection y'all”
(Kix and Onyx) “We light it up, Light it up, light it up”
(Sweet) “Uh... Uh... It's flowin’... Uh...uh... It's thumpin’...”
(Onyx) “The mixtape's got a little Hank, little Drake, A little something bumping, thump, thumping on the wheel ride. The mix in our drink's a little stronger than you think. So get a grip, take a sip of that feel right. The ride's jacked up, flat bills flipped back. Yeah you can find us where the party's at” As he sings he pauses long enough ta flip the bill o’ his hat up, grinnin’ as he resumes strummin’ his guitar without missin’ a beat.
(Kix and Onyx) “This is how we roll. We hanging round singing out everything on the radio. We light it up with our hooves up. This is how we roll, This is how we do, We're burning down the night shooting bullets at the moon baby, This is how we roll”
(Kix) “Ah’m from the Dirty, Dirty baby! Chapter Five; Forced Friendships

“Do you know where the town hall is? I need to ask the mayor something real quick before we go get you your supplies.” The question comes jus’ before we leave the lobby o’ the hotel, causin’ me ta look at her in confusion.
“Yea, it ain’ that hard ta find, why do ya need ta talk ta the mayor?” ‘Ah may not know her that well but somethin’ feels suspicious.’
“It’s….. Grown up business, nothing for you to worry about.”
Ah don’ know what is on her mind but we head on out, talkin’ about things that might seem casual or even borin’ ta passersby but ta me an’ ma the conversations are almost pure gold. “When I was your age I always dreamed about being a world famous rodeo pony, or the captain of the Wonderbolts. But I was one of the worst fliers in Cloudsdale when I went through flight camp. I never thought I’d not only be a stage performer but never in a million years imagined I’d enjoy it.”
“Was it….. Was it because o’ pa’s accident an’ yer argument that caused ya to stop performin’ in rodeos?”
Ah notice the hurt in her gaze as she falters at the question. A shiver runs along her body as she looks at me. “Yes, after….. After the….. Breakup I….. I never wanted to be reminded of that, so I changed….. Almost everything.” The admittance comes after a tense couple of minutes.
“Well, Ah’m glad that ya changed yer mind now ma, even if ya missed out on mah life before now.”
Ah can tell she has somethin’ else on her mind as her facial expression falls even further, but Ah don’ wanna ask an’ risk even further damage. Before we go inside the shop ma makes her way inside town hall, leavin’ me ta stand by the door.
“..... Will be finished in a month or two and I will let Princess Twilight know about it.” The grey maned mare says in an official tone as her an’ ma exit the building after what seems like an hour, though accordin’ ta the big clock the talk only lasted fer around thirty seven minutes.
“Thank you mayor, ready to go Mint?” Ah only answer with a simple head nod as a yawn fights its way out despite mah attempt ta hide it.
The first store we go in is called Carousel Boutique an’ already Ah can tell Ah’m not gonna like this experience, specially once a voice drifts towards us filled with class. “Welcome to Carousel Bou…..” The white coated mare with fancy purple mane starts jus’ as she enters the room, stoppin’ as she sees ma. “A….. Amethyst Rain? Wha….. Don’t you have a show to be performing tonight?”
“No I don’t, my show is next week” Ma smiles as we step deeper inta the shop. “I’m here to get my daughter a few outfits and if you can some new saddlebags.”
“Ma, Ah already told ya, Ah don’ need any new outfits or bags, specially high class an’ fancy lookin’ ones.” Mah outburst comes before Ah even think about what Ah’m sayin’. ‘Great, spend most o’ the day gettin’ ta know each other an’ smilin’ an’ all it takes is one sentence ta ruin things between us.’ Instantly Ah regret mah bluntness as a sad an’ hurt look fills ma’s eyes. “Sorry ma….. jus’..... Ah don’ have much use fer those kinda clothes ya know? But Ah will accept the saddlebags, as long as they ain’ too fancy.”
As Ah wait fer her response the shop owner, who spent the time mutterin’ unrecognizable words while her blue eyes shrunk ta almost nothin’ begins ta snap outa whatever trance she was in. “Alright, but you do need some new clothes for winter, and I will settle for you to have one dress.” Ma counters before the unicorn clears her throat.
“Well darling, I must say that it is a surprise to see that you have a daughter. In all the pictures and interviews you have given I do not recall you ever mentioning having a foal or even being in a relationship. Oh and where are my manners, my name is Rarity and I must say it is an absolute pleasure to meet you Amethyst.”
“It’s….. complicated, let’s just say that I was a….. very different mare back then and was in love.”
The sadness in ma’s voice matches the look in her lowered eyes. ‘Does she….. does she regret havin’ me? Or does she regret meetin’ pa?’ “Ah’m Mint, Mint Song, nice ta meet ya Miss Rarity.” Ah can’ help but feel as if Ah done somethin’ wrong as Rarity jus’ looks at mah offered hoof. “Is….. is everythin’ ok?” ‘Great, what’d Ah do now ta cause this mare ta stare at me like this?’
“Sorry darling, but I find it uncouth to shake hooves. It is a pleasure to meet you though, and you don’t have to call me Miss, just Rarity will do. I am wondering how did you ever come across your accent? Do you not live in Manehattan?”
“Naw, Ah live mah pa an’ we spent most o’ our time livin’ in Appleoosa an’ Neighsville.”
“Well I must say it is charming, now follow me please and I shall get your new outfit done in no time, and I could even make you another hat to match.” As she begins ta take mah measurements Rarity goes off an’ starts a conversation with ma about borin’ stuff, like what is it like livin’ in Manehattan an’ bein’ a stage actor.
‘Ah hope Ah'll never have ta go through this again fer the rest o’ mah life.’ After what felt like years Rarity finally finishes with mah outfit, an’ it’s one Ah really wish Ah never have ta wear.
The main color o’ the dress is some sorta white, accordin’ ta Rarity it’s ivory. The body o’ the dress is nothin’ more than a piece o’ fabric goin’ from a silver collar an’ runs between mah front legs along mah chest till it meets with the belt which is done in gold. Another piece stretches along mah back, leavin’ mah shoulders an’ wings free. The back part o’ the dress does have a country style look ta it as it incorporates frills along the bottom o’ each layer with the frills done in silver fabric. Gold thread forms intricate musical and country designs on the front o’ the chest an’ along the sides o’ the back part. Mah hat is replaced with a matchin’ ivory colored version with the hatband bein’ mostly gold with musical designs done in silver. Finally a pair o’ matchin’ cowboy boots graces mah hooves.
“Rarity, Ah like how the hat an’ boots look, an ’ Ah appreciate the fancy dress, but maybe….. could ya make one that looks like it, but a little less….. fancy please?”
“I guess I could, though I do have to go back to work on some of my other orders. If you are staying in Ponyville for a while I could let you know when it will be done.” The dress is magically removed an’ folded very carefully before bein’ placed in mah new bags which are made o’ gold cloth, a microphone standin’ straight up an’ down is done in ivory with a pair o’ wings fully extended ta the sides done in two shades o’ mint, matchin’ mine completely. “I do hope you both have a wonderful day and take care.” Rarity says with a wave o’ her hoof as we walk out an’ head ta another store after ma promises ta get Rarity a pair o’ tickets fer her next show.
The rest o’ the day goes by startin’ with a lunch with pa at his new hopefully long term job. Fer an entire hour between bites an’ sips Ah feel as if we’re one normal family like Ah’ve seen in our travels. Ma an’ pa spend the time laughin’ and bringin’ up memories about their past, good memories, though they do get a little sad after a while. Fer the rest o’ day me an’ ma go off an’ get the rest o’ mah supplies fer the new school year an’ hang out. By the time we return ta the apartment the sun has just almost set.
The next day starts off jus’ the same as it did yesterday, but instead of doin’ some shoppin’ we meet up with pa an’ we escort ma towards the train station. “Thanks fer the new stuff ma, Ah’m glad we could spend the day together yesterday an’ fer mosta the supplies ya got me.” A tear fights its way down mah cheek as Ah hug her at the train platform.
“Take care o’ yerself ‘Thyst, an’ give us a heads up before ya visit again.”
“I will, and I’ll miss you my Song. Kix, take care of her and let me know in advance when you’ll let her come and visit.” After the round o’ hugs finish ma steps back onta the train, me an’ pa jus’ stand there quietly as the train quickly disappears.

“So Mint, did ya have a good time hangin’ out with yer ma?” We head down the ramp an’ back towards the town. Ah give her a gentle nuzzle against the backside o’ her ear as we pass by a restaurant as Ah notice her somewhat darkened mood. “Gettin’ hungry? Ah am.”
“Sure….. Ah’m gettin’ a little hungry.”
“Hey, what’s eatin’ ya? Ya’ve been upset over somethin’ since Amethyst left an’ Ah know ya know ya can talk ta me about it.” For a while she jus’ stands there as if unsure what ta say, then finally she answers with only a shake o’ head. “Don’ let it build up fer too long sweetie, it ain’ healthy.”
Lunch goes by quietly as Ah jus’ watch her push food around before eatin’ which only draws a sigh. The silence is broken by a familiar voice. “Well, if it isn’t the new filly in town, she’s the one who bullied me daddy.”
Another sigh escapes mah throat as Mint jus’ glares at the filly an’ starts ta get up angrily. “Mint, sit down, Ah’ll handle this.” Turnin’ Ah notice what could be the fillies’ parents. “Ah’m Kix, nice ta meet ya sir, ma’am. Ah got a feelin’ we’ll be seein’ alot o’ each other in the school’s office unless we can figure out how ta nip the issue between our daughters in the bud.”
“Hmph, it is not our daughter that is the problem. Just because y…..” The dark pink mare with purple mane starts. Her voice full of disgust an’ a hint o’ venom before the dark chocolate maned stallion with beige coat interrupts, takin’ mah hoof firmly and speaks in a friendly voice.
“I’m Rich, Filthy Rich and it is a pleasure to meet you Kix. Now I do agree that it seems our daughters have started off on the wrong hoof. This is my wife, Spoiled Rich.” His introduction earns him an evil stare from both Spoiled an’ Diamond but he jus’ ignores them.
“Nice ta meet ya, this is Mint Song. Ya mind if jus’ the two o’ us, Diamond an’ Mint have a sit down? No offense ma’am but Ah don’ think yer attitude would be suitable ta findin’ a good resolution ta the problem.” The two fillies an’ Spoiled jus’ look at me an’ Filthy in shock as he agrees, sendin’ his wife off ta take care o’ somethin’. The two fillies eventually join us but continue ta glower at each other as they sit with the table bein’ the only thing that splits them apart.
“Alright Kix, since you have made the request why don’t you start us off.”
“Mint, why did ya attack Diamond in the schoolyard when we were gettin’ ya registered?”
Her answer is obviously unwilling as she jus’ glares at the pink filly. Anger drippin’ from each word. “Because pa, first she was actin’ so high an’ mighty jus’ cause o’ how rich her family is, then she started makin’ fun o’ how Ah talk an’ even said Ah should play with the pigs on some farm.” As she goes ta explain Ah can tell Diamond wants to interrupt but is stopped by Filthy. In response she jus’ narrows her gaze and let's out a huff.
“Is that true Diamond?”
“No it isn’t daddy, she was just mad because she misunderstood something I said to Silver Spoon as we were passing by. We didn’t say anything about how she talks and we did not tell her to make friends with pigs.”
Before Mint can stand an’ shout back angrily Ah cut her off. “Hmmm, ya know Filthy, Ah think these two spendin’ some quality time together would be a possibility, what do ya think?” The balking o’ the two is fer the most part ignored as Filthy seems ta think it over fer a bit.
“I think it may help, and if I may include something extra. Having Diamond Tiara spend some time with other ponies who aren’t as financially well off as her may also do her some good.”
“WHAT?!”
“Ah take that ta mean we have an agreement then?”
As both me an’ Filthy shake hooves the duo jus’ groan an’ look at us before Filthy an’ Diamond gets up ta leave. “Oh hey, there’s one thing Ah fergot ta ask. Ah heard that ya like ta sponsor new businesses an’ what not, well mah band could use a sponsor, specially with us gearin’ up fer our very first Equestria tour next spring. Ah don’ need an answer now, besides Ah don’ handle the business dealins’ o’ the band. We’re staying at the hotel fer now or ya can find us at the Cider Mill performin’.”
“I will definitely think it over Kix and will give you an answer soon. Plus we can work out the arrangements on how things will be handled with our daughters.” With a smile he heads off, followed by a very upset Diamond Tiara.
“Hi, you wouldn’t happen to be Kix would you?” A mare asks as she approaches from behind jus’ as Ah’m about ta head inta mah room, Mint is already off with Ah’m guessin’ Sweet an’
“Yes ma’am Ah am, how may Ah help ya?” Turnin’ around Ah come face ta face with a grey coated pegasus with buttery colored mane an’ eyes wearin’ a mailmare’s hat an’ satchel.
“I have a letter for you, here you go.” Smiling happily she hands the envelope over. “I caught your show at the Cider Mill yesterday, you guys are very good. Are you planning on performing again soon? Oh, I’m sorry, my name is Ditzy, it is nice to meet you.”
“Well Ditzy we are plannin’ on performin’ again though we don’ yet have a workin’ schedule with the bar’s management yet. Jus’ keep an eye out on the sign out front.”
“Ok, thank you, have a good day.” With a smile she takes off an’ Ah take a look at the envelope which seems ta have come from Sapphire Shores.

I have some good news for Mint concerning her learning how to fly properly, though it could be an opportunity for you as well. I don’t know if it has been advertised yet but a week before Nightmare’s Night the Wonderbolts are doing a three day performance in Ponyville. Turns out that they have a special program for pegasi foals whose parents can’t afford to send them to flight school in Cloudsdale.
As for how it is an opportunity for you, well they were looking for a band to open up for their performances and since you are already there I thought it would make sense to put your name in the hat. Spitfire, the captain of the team and the team’s manager is going to be visiting in a few weeks to talk with you and to go over the plans. Good luck with them.

“Hey Mint, get your flank up girl or yer gonna be late fer yer first day o’ school.” Grumpily Ah growl at pa’s voice an’ hoof nudgin’ me in an attempt ta get me outa bed.
“Pa, do Ah have ta spend mah time with that….. That….. That stuck up pain in the flank filly?” With another shove from pa’s hoof Ah tumble onta the floor with a yelp, tangled in the blankets.
“Yes ya do, unless ya wanna spend the next year not only bein’ watched by the twins while grounded but also no music an’ no cosplay fer the same period o’ time.”
“Ah remember, ya threatened me with that fer the past week now pa whenever Ah bring it up.” Sighin’ Ah get up an’ once Ah’m ready we meet up with the others fer breakfast. Breakfast lasts fer only about twenty minutes an’ then Ah’m bein’ ushered out the door with pa escortin’ me ta school.
Thankfully the walk is short an’ quiet, endin’ with a hug and kiss before Ah continue on mah own, bein’ joined by a jus’ as reluctant Diamond Tiara an’ Silver Spoon. “Ah know ya hate this as much as Ah do, so let's…..”
“Excuse me, but I didn’t say you can speak to me yet blank flank. And we need to go over the rules during recess. Until then, I don’t know you and you don’t know me, got it.”
“Yeah, and like keep at least ten to fifteen feet between us. We don’t want you ruining our image.”
“Who said ya get ta boss me around Di, huh? Ah don’ give a hoot what rules ya got fer me or what image yer tryin’ ta keep. If we don’ atleast act like we’re gettin’ along think o’ what yer gonna lose, now lets get inside before we’re late.” ‘Too early fer dealin’ with this spoiled brat, why can’ Ah hibernate fer the rest o’ the year?’ With a humph Ah pull away from Diamond’s face an’ scowl as Ah head inside, the other two racin’ ta get in before me.
“Girls, you are supposed to be getting along, not fighting. Now, you can either work on that or you can spend your first two weeks of recess inside.” The teacher’s voice comes from behind the three o’ us as we’re wedged in the doorway with me standin’ between the two brats. Mah new classmates erupt with laughter as they watch us struggle ta pop free. The laughing only increases when mahself an’ Diamond end up fallin’ on our faces when Silver Spoon becomes the first one ta be unstuck.
It takes Miss Cheerilee a good ten or fifteen minutes before she can get the other students in line while keepin’ me in front o’ the room. “Now class, as you may have noticed we have a new student who is joining us. Please introduce yourself and tell us a little about you.”
“Yes ma’am. Ah’m Mint Song, an’ Ah jus’ moved here from Appleloosa a few weeks ago thanks ta mah pa an’ his band.” Murmurs float around the room as Ah mention pa an’ the band. Or it coulda been caused by a newspaper that one o’ the students tried ta hide featurin’ a picture o’ me an’ ma before school started. ‘Seems that we’re already becomin’ well known here, this’ll be fun.’ “Ah enjoy music, more specifically singin’ along with readin’ and Ah’m currently writin’ mah own song. An’ yea, Ah’m Amethyst Rain’s daughter.” ‘Might as well let them know now before they try an’ bug me too much about it. Why couldn’ mah weekend with ma have been less….. flashy an’ longer? Ah’m still seein’ flashes when Ah blink. Plus Ah wouldn’ have ta be dealin’ with stuck up flanks one an’ two or the rest o’ these foals.’
“Thank you Mint. Now you may take your seat next to Diamond Tiara.”
“Thank ya Miss Cheerilee.” With a frown turned away from her Ah head towards mah assigned seat, ignorin’ the others as they try ta whisper questions ta me.
Once Ah’m seated Diamond leans over ta me an’ whispers. “I didn’t know you were Amethyst’s daughter, what is it like being related to somepony famous that obviously doesn’t want you around? If it was me I would be devastated.”
“Yea well, Ah ain’ ya Di, now shut up an’ leave me alone till recess.” As class begins all Miss Cheerilee does is go over the schedule fer the year, class supplies needed an’ expectations she has fer us. As she drones on mah thoughts turn ta the song Ah’m workin’ on. ‘How should Ah continue this, Little girl don't be so blue, Ah know life…..’
“Are you paying attention Mint?” The words snap me outa mah thoughts as Ah notice Miss Cheerilee is standin’ right in front o’ me.
“Ye- no ma’am Ah wasn’”
“This is a poor way to start the year Mint, though I can understand why. It is time for school to end anyway. Now go have fun children, and be safe.” At her words the other foals rush hurriedly out the door with me trailin’ a ways behind an’ headin’ towards Diamond an’ Silver, thankful today was only a half day.
“So what do ya’ll do fer fun?”
“Hey Mint, why are ya hangin’ with these two?” The yellow coated filly with a large pink bow asks as a trio o’ fillies join us.
“What are you three doing here? We didn’t invite you to join us.”
“We wanted to see if Mint wanted to play with us, but I guess it’s a bad idea.” The cotton candy maned unicorn says a little timidly.
“We don’t want her around, she can go play with you three blank flanks.”
“Yeah, go play with them Mint and leave us alone.”
‘Hm, this might be interestin’. Seems these girls don’ like each other much, good.’ Grinin’ Ah look at the two rich fillies an’ then the trio. “Ya know, that sounds like a good idea, Di an’ Silver can join us as well.” As expected the five fillies jus’ drop their jaws. “Ya know that we gotta hang together Di, an’ Ah wanna play with these fillies.”
“No, no way am I going to play anything with those three.”
“Then Ah guess Ah’ll have ta let Miss Cheerilee an’ mah pa know that yer not followin’ the rules.” With a grumble an’ annoyed flick o’ her tail an’ ears Diamond mumbles somethin’ that sounds like fine, but Ah couldn’ hear it well enough. Meanwhile Silver jus’ looks upset an’ still in shock while the three fillies jus’ look confused. “Why don’ we have a team race? Firs’ pair ta make it ta the school an’ back wins. Let's see….. Di an’..... Ah forgot yer name, with the pink bow can be one team. Silver an’ the unicorn can form team two, leavin’ me with the pegasus. Now rules are no usin’ magic or wings, an’ the pair has ta cross together.”
“Mah name’s Apple Bloom, this here is Sweetie Belle an’ Scootaloo.” The earth filly says with a hint o’ annoyance as she stands next ta a clearly angry Diamond while pointin’ her hoof at her two friends as they take their place.
Finally the two snobs find their voices jus’ as Ah’m about ta start the countdown. “Us? Race? Ha, as if. Why should we do something so….. physical?”
“Yeah, do you have any idea how long it took for me to get myself looking this good? I’m not going to ruin that hard work.”
“Why don’t we go and get ourselves something to eat then? Then afterwards we can figure out something to do.” Sweetie suggests, which only earns her a death stare from Diamond an’ Silver.
“Fine, since you are SSOOO eager to hang out with these three losers let's go. Thankfully I can’t spend to much time with you four cause my daddy will need me soon.”
Our lunch isn’ exactly a peaceful one as all throughout the meal insults are bein’ thrown between the two groups as Ah jus’ watch with an inward smile. ‘Well, if Ah have ta be miserable, might as well pass it off ta others. Atleast this way Ah can get some free entertainment ta pass the time, wonder how long Ah can keep this goin’ without wearin’ it down too fast.’
The so called lunch lasts fer an hour or so before Diamond an’ Silver have ta leave, mumblin’ somethin’ about helpin’ their families. As fer the other three they follow me as Ah begin ta head back home.
“Hey Mint, wait up!”
“Yeah, we wanna talk ta ya!”
“Why….. were you….. hanging out….. with those….. two fillies?” The unicorn asks between huffs while her friends jus’ stand there an’ stare at me as Ah’m about ta step inside the room.
“That ain’ none o’ yer concern, now Ah’m…..”
“Hey Mint, how was school? Seems like you made some friends already, I’m Sweet Spice, nice to meet you three.”
“Ah’m Apple Bloom…..”
“And I’m Scootaloo…..”
“I’m Sweetie Belle…..”
“And we are…..” Groanin’ Ah watch as they all take a deep breath. “THE CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS!”
“Well it is a pleasure to meet you girls. Mint, we’re kinda busy right now so why don’t you and your friends go have some fun? Maybe even get those other two fillies to join you.”
“But Ah…..” ‘Great, now Ah’m stuck with these three weirdos, can mah day get any worse?’
