All was silent in Canterlot High School’s chemistry lab, apart from the bubbling of potions and the whir of machinery. The room was abandoned – most students would much rather go home than stay after school for the afternoon – except for one girl.
This girl was Twilight Sparkle, a promising young scientist who hoped for a career in chemistry and engineering in the future. She has been scouted by many universities and was known as a scientific prodigy. Doing experiments was one of her favourite ways to spend her free time, and even with all her new friends she still enjoyed her private time.
Twilight was a prime example of, as her friend Rainbow Dash what sat, a total egghead. But she didn’t care what others thought. It was her passion, and her always poured her heart and soul into it.
So here Twilight was, sitting in front of a desk with .a chemistry set with a strange substance inside one of the test tubes holding a strange substance, to one side, flattish machine on the worktable in front of her.
Twilight’s concentration was broken when a small purple and green dog hopped onto her lap and yipped excitedly, licking her face eagerly.
“Spike! Hey, easy boy, easy!” she giggled.
Spike stopped at his best friend’s request and pulled a face. “You’re no fun, Twilight…” he complained.
Twilight just laughed. Man, she would never get used to her loyal assistant being able to talk to her in her own language.
“So, whatcha making?” Spike asked, sitting on Twilight’s lap and putting his front paws on the desk. Lying on the table in front of him was what looked like some sort of skateboard, only larger. It had no wheels, but instead a small electromagnetic booster wherever a wheel would be. At the end of the skateboard was an engine, streamlined in order to fit in with the rest of the board. There was also some other machinery on the machine’s underside, wires and circuit boards and a set of solar panels on top near the back.
“Behold, Spike! The world’s first working hoverboard!” she announced. Spike looked at her questioningly, (imaginary) eyebrow raised.
Twilight pouted at her dog’s expression before rolling her eyes. She pushed herself to the other end of the table with her spinney chair and grabbed the test tube, wobbling it slightly. “You’ll see Spike, with this special fuel, the hoverboard should have enough power in order to lift off the ground and fly!” she said enthusiastically, slowly pouring the liquid into a hole in the machine, presumably to hold the fuel. “Of course, it’s still pretty experimental so – GAH!” Twilight’s cry echoed the room as a strange scented reddish smoke filled the room in seconds.
Twilight fell off the chair in her shock and Spike was sent sliding across the floor with a yelp. Twilight stumbled to her feet and stepped back, trying to find something to hold on to. She felt her left hand meet with a table and went to put her other hand on it, instead knocking over a glass bottle. As the smoke began to fade, Twilight whipped around as fast as she could, bit not fast enough to avoid the bottle, which smashed upon impact and sprayed a strange green goo all over the scientist.
Twilight fell to the ground and Spike ran up to her, careful to avoid the goo (after all, Twilight was always telling him to keep away from the chemicals because they could make him very sick). “Twilight, are you OK?” he asked frantically, worry evident on his canine features.
Twilight sat up and rubbed her eyes, which still had a reddish tint in them from the smoke. “I’m fine Spike, just spilled some goo on myself. I’m sure it’s nothing - after all there are no physical changes which means the chemical must have to be ingested in order to have a major affect, and since none went in my mouth or nose I should be safe,” she explained, apologizing when she realised she’d been rambling. Spike simply rolled his eyes and helped her to her feet - well, as well as he could for a dog only about half a metre tall.
“Anyway, it’s getting late, we should probably be getting home anyway,” Twilight said, mopping up the goo. “Spike, could you help pack away that chemistry set?” Twilight asked.
“OK!” Spike said, jumping to the table and picking up a test tube in his mouth, eager to help his friend.
“Careful!” Twilight warned. “They’re breakable. And don’t pick up any of the tubes or containers that aren’t clean, if you get any of those chemicals in your mouth-”
“I know, I know, it could poison me and I could get sick, you tell me almost everyday,” he said, putting the test tube inside the set’s case.
“I know, I just worry about you,” Twilight said, picking up Spike and hugging him. She put the last few pieces of the set in it’s case and put in in her bag along with the hoverboard and Spike before placing it on her back and leaving the chemistry room, locking the door behind her as the last of the green goo evaporated in a green glow.
