Buck the Rules

The previous night Rainbow Dash actually did something she hadn’t done in forever: she set her alarm. The cyan mare awoke to the sound she hated more than anything else in life—well, other than Twilight’s nagging that is—her alarm clock going off.

Rainbow groaned and forced her eyes open. She both knew and detested that sound. She hated that sound because it meant that today was important. It had to be important; otherwise, there was no way in Tartarus she would have set that infernal thing.

So, with no options left other than to get up and shut the bucking thing off, she forced her protesting body to move, to try and get up. Rainbow Dash fell out of bed, crawled over, and pulled the blasted thing off the dresser. She was about to toss the thing out of her cloud house, and out of her life, forever—the fate of her past three alarm clocks—when she saw a sticky note attached to it. Something that reminded her the reason why she had hurt herself like this and made herself get up at ten a.m. when there wasn’t a real reason to.

“The bet with Twilight!” Rainbow shouted to herself.

Quickly stretching her wings and glancing out the nearest window, she grinned before jumping out of it and taking off towards the crystal castle of the Princess of Friendship.

Skidding to a halt in front of the crystal steps, Rainbow walked up to the door.

“Prepare to lose, Twilight Sparkle.” She pushed her way through the door without knocking and made her way down the hall.

Rainbow grinned as she heard a noise coming from the kitchen. She had been expecting Twilight to be awake; because, well, that’s what Twilight does. She wakes up early and takes care of things even though there’s no reason to. Had Twilight been asleep, Rainbow would have known she was in trouble.

Dash grinned as she made for the kitchen. She was still grinning as she quickly jumped around the corner and yelled out, “Gotcha!”

Twilight looked up from her disgusting breakfast of quesadillas to Rainbow. “Hey, Rainbow Dash. Come to check up on me already?”

“Uh… what?” Rainbow looked from her friend’s unamused face to the meal that sat in front of her. But Twilight hates quesadillas. This is a joke, right? Oh... she’s doing this for the bet.

“Yep, I’m serious about this! I slept in a whole hour past my normal wake up time. Didn’t check my checklist once. Completely skipped brushing my teeth this morning, and now I’m having… quesadillas,” Twilight said with a grimace, “for breakfast.”

“An hour‽ Twilight do you even know how early I got up today? Never mind that, why are you eating those?” Rainbow gestured a hoof at the plate. “You hate quesadillas.”

“Umm… it’s the bet, you said I have to do things I wouldn’t normally do. These are all things I wouldn’t normally do.”

“Really, Twilight?” Rainbow facehoofed. “Doing a couple of things you hate doesn’t mean you’re different! It just means you’re doing lame stuff that makes you feel bad. And they aren’t even the cool bad things!”

Twilight looked up from her—rather cheesy—meal to the cyan pegasus. “Umm… I don’t understand.”

“Just forget it,” Rainbow said. “I’m going back to bed.”

“What‽ No! We had a bet,” Twilight said as she teleported right in front of Rainbow, blocking her path.

Rainbow waved it off with a roll of her eyes. “And? You’re not even taking it seriously! Eh… good try on your part though. ‘A’ for effort and all that.”

“I’m serious! I’m very serious about winning this!” Twilight prodded Rainbow with a hoof.

“Maybe that’s why it’s not working”—Rainbow shoved her friend’s hoof aside—“just ease up a bit. Don’t think, just do, Twi.”

“I-I… um, I don’t…” Twi stammered, rubbing her hoof against the side of her other leg. “I don’t know how. I couldn’t find any books about it last night.”

“Sheesh, Twilight, not everything’s in a book! It’s easy; just don’t be, uh, well… you,” Rainbow said with a chuckle. “How about this? I’ll tell you what you need to do all day and you just do that.”

Twilight looked up into her friend’s magenta eyes. “So you’ll just tell me what to do all day?”

“Exactly like what I’ll do if you win.”

Twilight’s resolve faltered for only a moment before she shook her head and glared right at her friend. “You know what? Deal.”

Rainbow raised a brow while smirking at the princess. “What? No list of pros and cons? You’re not gonna think this through before you agree?”

“Nope, I told you yesterday, I’m going to win this, whatever it takes. So let’s do it. We’ll spend the day together and you can tell me what to do, and when this is over, you’ll finally have to straighten up.”

Rainbow spat on her hoof and stuck it out to Twilight, a smirk staying prominent on her face. Twilight hesitated for a few seconds—something that caused Rainbow’s grin to increase—before she did likewise. The alicorn spat on her own hoof and pressed it against Rainbow’s, watching with trepidation as the pegasus grinned; a grin that seemed to get even larger at Twilight’s momentary doubt.

“Oh, and before we start, Twi.”

“Yes?”

Rainbow winked at her friend. “Don’t say ‘spend the day together’ like it’s a date or something.”

Twilight glared at her as Rainbow started to make her way haphazardly out of the castle. The alicorn shook her head clear of that disturbing thought. “So, um, what are the ground rules?” she asked.

“Rules? Really, Twilight?”

“What?”

Rainbow laughed again and ran her hoof over Twilight’s head. “Ugh, whatever. Hmm… easy, you just have to not be Twilight Sparkle.”

“Yeah, how exactly do I not be me? I mean even if I act different, I’m still me.”

“Geez, you’re a very literal pony aren’t you? Just try to pretend, yeah, let’s start there! Pretend you’re a really awesome pony!”

“What, like you?” Twilight asked with a roll of her eyes.

“Yeah! Just like me! I mean, I guess I am the most awesome pony you get the honor of knowing.” Rainbow’s smile was bright as the sun and her voice held no note of sarcasm.

“Oh, so just act like I’m the Queen of the World then, gotcha.” Twilight’s reply was dripping with sarcasm.

“Uh… you alright there, Twi?”

“You accused me of not taking this seriously, when all you’ve said is just to be like you!”

“Fine, you want this to be serious? Let’s do this seriously then. Here’s the ground rules,” Rainbow spoke as they left the castle together. “You don’t give two bucks about anypony or anything. No pony you meet today matters.”

“What?” Twilight asked. “I-I… what?”

“You heard me, act with… uhh… you know, when you couldn’t care less about something?”

“Indifference?” Twilight asked.

“Yeah that! That should be pretty easy for you, right?”

“I’ve never treated ponies with indifference!” Twilight protested.

“Yeah you did. Before you met us you treated everypony with indifference. But I don’t just want you to repeat that; no, I want you to take it up to eleven. You’re not just going to go out of your way to ignore other ponies, you’re going to look at them like they’re dirt. Like they should feel lucky just to be in your presence.”

“That’s horrible!”

“That’s the bet, anytime you want out, just say so. Nopony is forcing you to do it.”

“I-I… um…” Twilight paused. No, I’m serious about this; it’s just for one day. I’m going to win this. It may be the only chance we have of really teaching Rainbow responsibility. “Fine.”

“Fine you say? Let’s put it into practice then,” Rainbow stated with an evil grin as she saw Bon Bon and Roseluck walking nearby. “Test it out on them.”

Twilight’s eyes looked at the two mares. This was it; this was the moment when this would move from being ‘just talk’ to something more; something that could cause everypony in town, everypony in Equestria to see her differently. No, she told herself. I’m serious about this, more so than I’ve been about anything for a long time. I can do this. I can win!

“Well, you gonna go? Or can we call it a day?”

“I’m going now,” Twilight replied as she started to walk up to the two mares with her head held up in the same fashion as the Canterlot elite.

“Good luck,” Rainbow snickered out. This should be fun to watch. Time to crash and burn, Sparkle.

Princess Twilight walked right up to the two mares and sat down directly in front of their path.

Roseluck and Bon Bon came to a stop. “Hello princess, nice day today, isn’t it?” Roseluck asked.

“It’s a day, whether it’s nice or not is purely subjective and cannot be quantified.”

Did she… did she just try to diss them with science? Rainbow facehoofed, she then did a quick double check to make sure nopony saw her hanging out with someone so uncool.

“Umm… okay?” Bon Bon said with a strange smile on her face as she tried to comprehend the princess’s words. “That was a great party for Princess Celestia yesterday, I’m happy everything turned out so perfectly.”

“You’re definition of perfect is severely lacking, Bon Bon. I’d highly recommend visiting the library at your earliest convenience and looking it up in a dictionary.”

Rainbow groaned and quickly took flight. She flew at top speed and grabbed Twilight, shoving her aside, then glared at her before turning to look at the mares. “How about you two scram?”

Bon Bon and Roseluck looked at each other with confused expressions on their muzzles. “That was… strange,” Roseluck said as they turned and walked away.

“Very,” Bon Bon replied. They both silently agreed to forget that it ever happened.

Turning back to Twilight, Rainbow rolled her eyes before pointing a hoof up to a cloud. “Can I talk to you for a second? Up. There.” Before the princess could respond, Rainbow took off into the air.

Twilight was confused. But she unfolded her wings all the same and followed Rainbow. “Rainbow, I don’t understand, I did all—”

“Seriously? What the buck was that? You freaking scienced them, Twi! Do you even know how uncool that is? And I was right there! Do you know how many ponies could’ve seen me with you?”

“You said to treat them with indifference. That was me doing it.”

“I told you to treat them like they were dirt! Not tutor them!”

“So, I—”

“Stop. Whatever you’re going to say, it’s wrong. Let’s run through what you should have done. When Roseluck asked you if it was a nice day, you should have asked what business it was of hers. When Bon Bon told you that she thought the party was perfect, you should have said she needed her eyes checked.”

“That’s just downright rude, and it doesn’t even validate my argument!”

Rainbow shook her head. “You don’t need to validate anything! You were supposed to diss them and then move on! Not... whatever that was.”

Twilight opened her muzzle, but then shut it again. She looked confused, but thoughtful.

“Alright, well it was good for a test run. Now that you know what not to do, do you think you’re ready for another go?” Rainbow asked as her eyes spotted somepony very familiar in the distance bounding over to the princess’s castle.

Twilight nodded.

“This is the real deal, your test starts now. Are you sure you’re ready?” Rainbow asked, knowing this would come to an end very soon.

“I’m ready!” Twilight replied.

“Okay, teleport back to the ground and the next pony should be coming up very soon. But Twilight, no backing out, if you do—”

“Never, I’m going to win this. Just treat them like dirt and not give two bucks, right?”

“Right. Go get em!” Rainbow raised a hoof in the air. There’s no way she’ll actually do it. But at least this will make for some good entertainment.

Twilight grinned and teleported down, her jaw dropped as she saw the next pony come bounding up the trail. It was a mare she fully recognized—one with a fully pink coat and mane—one with three party balloons as her cutie mark, her friend, Pinkie Pie.

Damn you, Rainbow Dash.

“Hey Twilight! I was just on my way to see you and look! Poof, here you are! You’re amazing, it’s like you knew I was coming, like you had your own version of the pinkie sense, or I guess it’d be called the Twilight sen—”

“Pinkie, shut up.”

“W-w-what?”

“Celestia, you’re annoying. Always jabbering on about this and that, fully unaware that we stopped listening the moment you opened your muzzle.”

Whoa, what did she just say? Rainbow popped back up into a sitting position, as soon as Twilight had left she had laid back to try to catch a small nap while her friend ‘tried’ to be indifferent to the over exuberant pink pony.

Pinkie fell back onto her haunches, her mane and tail deflated, straightening out. She was completely taken aback by her friend’s words. “T-they do?”

Twilight started to walk around her. “What? Didn’t your ‘pinkie sense’ ever tell you the truth? No, I guess not, huh? Too bad, so sad. So why don’t you do us all a favor, go home, and eat those sugary death treats you love so much until your completely unrealistic metabolism finally gives out and you balloon so much that you can never leave your house again. That way we’ll at least know how to avoid you.”

Rainbow’s ear twitched at those words. Eh… still sciency, but I’m impressed. Way to knock it out of the park this time, Egghead. Although Damn! That was way meaner than I thought she’d be.

Pinkie slowly got to her hooves, backing away from the alicorn with tears forming in her eyes. “Wh-why Twilight?” Before the alicorn could respond, the pink mare spun and took off in the direction she came from. Rainbow Dash waited until Pinkie was far enough away so that she wouldn’t see her before landing by Twilight's side.

“That was the most horrible thing I’ve done in my life,” Twilight said, her voice pained.

“Even compared to that time you cast a spell on your doll to make everyone want it?” Rainbow asked, hoping to soften the blow at least a little.

She failed.

Twilight looked up at Rainbow, tears falling from her eyes. “Y-yes.”

“You want out? Say you want out and we’re done. We can both go and apologize to Pinkie together. I’m sure if we explained everything she’d forgive you. But if we keep going, it’ll only get worse from here.” There was a note of desperation in Rainbow’s voice as she found herself really, really hoping that Twilight would drop it here and now. Pranks weren’t all that much fun when somepony got hurt.

Twilight thought about it. She saw the look of concern in Rainbow’s eyes. She closed her eyes and concentrated, hard. Can I do this? Can I do things like that to all my friends? I-I… she looked up at Rainbow, her anger returning at the mare’s behavior from yesterday. This… this is a one-time thing, yes it hurt, it hurt Pinkie, and it hurt me to do it, but Rainbow’s right. Once I explain everything Pinkie will forgive me, as will everypony else that I might… be mean to.

This was a real chance to help Rainbow; a real chance to wake her up, to have her take responsibility seriously. She wasn’t about to throw it away. “No, we keep going. I’m serious about this, Rainbow. I will win.”

Rainbow cringed a little on the inside, but refused to let Twilight see it. She strengthened her resolve. Yes, that had been rough, a little bit more so than even she was comfortable with, but Rainbow wasn’t about to simply roll over and let Twilight win either. She’d never purposely lose a bet.

“Alright, Egghead, but if you’re going to act tough today, you’ve gotta look the part too.” At that, she led the princess through town to the local barbershop. They avoided running into any ponies along the way, something Rainbow Dash took them out of their way to do. However, that couldn’t be helped when they walked into the shop.

“Your only response to any question is ‘whatever’, understood?” Rainbow whispered to her.

“Whatever,” Twilight replied.

“Good,” Rainbow said as she walked into the shop. It was mostly empty, save for one mare sitting in the chair with a newspaper in hoof. Rainbow half expected it to say, ‘Princess Twilight, total “bitch” to her friends’, but knew that’d be impossible; even the Foal Free Press didn’t update that quickly.

“Oh hey, Rainbow Dash, and Princess Twilight. What can I do for you?”

“The princess here wanted a new manestyle,” Rainbow said as she picked up a magazine with all sorts of different manecuts in them. After a few moments she said, “Why don’t you give her ehh... that one.” There was a wide smirk set on her lips as she held the magazine up for only the barber to see.

The barber looked up from the magazine to the princess. Twilight didn’t even bother to try and look at it. “Umm… princess, are you sure you want that?”

“Whatever,” Twilight replied, barely even looking at her.

“Are you sure? I mean you didn’t even look at it.”

“What-ever.” Twilight said again, rolling her eyes.

“You heard the princess,” Rainbow said with a smile.

The barber gulped and gestured for the princess to get into the chair. Twilight haphazardly did so, almost like she was doing the barber a favor by complying.

“And Twi, while you’re getting your hair cut, I’ll get you a little gift for being such a good sport.” Rainbow said with a smile.

“Whatever,” Twilight said again as the barber went to work.

Rainbow returned twenty minutes later with a bag held in her muzzle. As she approached the barbershop, Twilight sauntered out to greet her. The mare’s long mane had been cut short, front and back. Her bangs still hung above her eyes, and the now shortened mane framed her face in a rounded shape. It really gave her an edgy look compared to her normal clean cut.

“That looks good on you, Twi,” Rainbow said with a smirk, barely keeping herself from laughing.

“Whatever,” Twilight replied

“And now for your gift.” At that, Rainbow pulled out a black dog collar with spikes on either side. It was crafted from fine leather with silver spikes. However those were not its most defining feature. Its most defining feature were the words, written in clear white print for all to see: bite me.

She showed it to Twilight, who, almost, cracked a smile at the sight of it, an expression that was hidden from the world as soon as she felt it. The princess moved her head down, allowing the pegasus easier access to attach the collar around her neck.

She couldn’t explain why but when Rainbow tightened it and caused her a small amount of difficulty in breathing, it felt… liberating, in a way.

Rainbow passed Twilight a pack of gum as she asked, “Ready for what comes next, Twi?”

Twilight took the offered candy, dropped the wrapper onto the floor, and started to chew. After a minute she blew a bubble and said, with a deadpan glare at Rainbow, “Whatever.”

I don’t care what it is, Rainbow. I’m going to win this.

Going too Far

Rainbow Dash blinked three times. She took in Twilight’s demeanor, her ‘new look’. It was more than she’d expected the bookworm-turned-princess could ever do. Twilight had not only proved that she’d go the distance with her actions to another pony—something they both owed an apology to Pinkie Pie for—but also that she’d change her very look, something that wouldn’t be quickly undone.

You’re really serious about this, aren't you, Twi? If you keep this up, I might… I might… I might, lose.

Rainbow’s imagination was filled with images of her spending countless days in the library, a pair of broken reading glasses on her face that were only held together by scotch tape. “That was a great book on thermodynamics, Twi! I can’t wait to re-read it again, for the third time!”

Her expression got serious; very serious. If there was one thing Rainbow Dash wasn’t, it was a loser. “You ready, Twi? Shit’s about to get real.”

Twilight just blew another bubble with her gum, popping it loudly in the pegasus’s face.

Rainbow glared at her. She thinks she’s already won, that I can’t come up with anything that’ll make her quit. Her eyes darted from Twilight to a shop in the distance: The Carousel Boutique. A grin appeared on Rainbow’s face. “Okay then, Hotshot, your first task is to prank Rarity.”

Twilight kept chewing her gum. “That’s it?” she asked boredly with a roll of her eyes.

“Gotta be something good though, something you can do with your magic that I couldn’t do. Think you can come up with something?” Bring it Sparkle, let’s see what you got. There is no way you can get Rarity as good as I can, even if you have a better chance of not being seen with that magic of yours.

Twilight cocked her head to the left and right until her eyes finally settled on the joke store that Pinkie Pie loved to visit. “Yeah, I think I can manage something.”

“Go get ‘em, Tiger,” Rainbow said with a laugh. “I’ll keep an eye out up there.” She pointed to the top of a nearby building.

“Gotta say, I expected something much harder from you, Rainbow,” Twilight stated as she walked over to the shop. “I mean, pranking Rarity is the best thing you got? Kind of a letdown.”

“Are you saying I’m going easy on you?”

Twilight stopped and cocked her head, blowing a bubble once more and snapping it between her teeth. “Yep. You oughta just call it quits here and admit I won.”

“We’ll see after this. Come on, I think Rarity’s dealing with some customers. Now’s the perfect chance. That is, if you got what it takes, Sparkles?”

Twilight shrugged and walked up to the window of the shop. She didn’t go in through; in fact, she gave the shop nothing more than a cursory glance before walking to the side of the building. Rainbow looked on, confused. What in the wide-wide world of Equestria is she doing?

Her eyes went wide as she saw Twilight power her horn and a pink can appear right next to her in the alley. She just stole that‽ Wow, good going, Twilight. I didn’t think you had it in you to steal something. Granted you being royalty and all, no one would probably care. Rainbow rolled her eyes, a snort leaving her muzzle as she watch the alicorn. Still pretty impressive for a goody four-hooves.

Rainbow watched, more than a little impressed with the alicorn’s actions as she spread her wings and took flight, heading straight over to the boutique. Twilight paused at the window of Rarity’s shop, unscrewed the can, and waited.

Rainbow flew in for a closer look. She didn’t know what Twilight had taken from the shop, but she was determined to find out. Looking closely, she saw it and almost bust a gut laughing.

Itching powder, classic!

Twilight’s expression didn’t change. She simply watched and waited for a satisfied mare to step out of the changing room in her new dress. Then, Twilight teleported a small amount of itching powder directly between the mare’s back and the garment.

Rainbow increased her laughter as she saw the mare scratching at the dress. Rarity frantically worked to get it off her, apologized profusely, and then got her another garment.

Twilight did the exact same thing to the new garment. Rarity went through three more before the mare simply stormed off, very unsatisfied and with Rarity’s apologies trailing out after her.

Twilight turned to Rainbow. “Next?”

Rainbow fell out of the air, landing flank first on the ground. She’s really… no, this is Twilight you’re talking about. You just gotta step up your game!

“Alright, so you got Rarity, big whoop. I get her all the time, and when she finds the powder she’ll probably just think it was me anyway. Why not try something more original?”

“I… whatever.”

“Alright, come on before she sees us. I have an idea on what to try next, but actually try this time, okay?” Rainbow asked with a wink.

“Whatever.”

Both mares stepped away from the boutique’s window and began walking farther into town. Ponies stopped what they were doing to stare at the princess’s manecut in shock.

Rainbow snickered. “Look, Twi, I think they noticed something different about you.”

Twilight just kept looking forward, ignoring the ponies around her as she continued to scowl.

“Is that Princess Twilight?”

“Why’s she wearing a collar?”

“That’s soooo coool!”

“Don’t even think about it!”

One hoof in front of the other, Twilight. This is for Rainbow, your chance to help her, to teach her real responsibility. It’s Just for one day, do whatever. It doesn’t matter, you can and will apologize tomorrow. Just focus on putting one hoof in front of the other.

“Hey, Twilight, if you want to back out now, I wouldn’t blame you. I mean, there are so many ponies seeing you right now. Wouldn’t want them to think bad of a princess, now would we?” Rainbow sneered at her friend, her eyes glinting victoriously.

“I’ve told you before, Rainbow Dash, I’m not backing out. Can we just get to the next thing already? I don’t have all day.” Twilight rolled her eyes, her tone holding a bite to it that caught the pegasus off guard.

“Fine, fine. How about we go see Fluttershy? I’m sure she’d just love to see you like this.”

Okay, Twilight. We both know she wouldn’t have you do anything to hurt Fluttershy. Relax, whatever it is, It’ll just be a minor inconvenience and you can write her a ten-thousand word apology letter tomorrow, same with Rarity, Pinkie, Roseluck, and Bon Bon. Better make it twenty-thousand, each, just to be safe.

“Yeah, I’m sure she’ll just love to see me.”

She can’t be serious, right? There’s no way she’s going to go through with this. As soon as she sees Fluttershy she’s gonna turn tail and I’ll win. No worries, Dash. Just keep pushing. But... what if she does? Oh man... what was I thinking? Please forgive me for this, Fluttershy. I mean it’s just a prank? No pony is actually going to get hurt. Right?

“You coming, Slowpoke?” Twilight asked.

Dash blinked her thoughts clear. Somehow she had stopped flying forward and was just hovering in the air. Twilight had not only passed her but also called her slow. Her brow creased in anger. “Oh, that’s it!”

“Giving up already, Dash? That was easier than I thought, and we’re almost to Fluttershy’s house too. Oh, well. Good—”

“Nopony calls me slow and gets away with it, princess. Come on.” Rainbow flew past Twilight and landed in front of Fluttershy’s cabin. She then knocked three times at the door. Sorry about this, ‘Shy. I owe you one.

When the door opened, Fluttershy smiled kindly at the surprise visit from her lifelong friend. “Oh, Rainbow Dash, I wasn’t expecting to see you today. What brings you for a visit? I was just about to have some tea with my animal friends. You’re welcome to join us, if you want to that is?”

“Uh, that sounds great, ‘Shy! Me and Twi would love to join you. Oh, it’s alright for Twilight to join us, right?”

“You… would?” Fluttershy’s eyes went wide at that; Rainbow didn’t do tea parties. She shook her head clear and just accepted the fortuitous turn of events. “Oh, yes, of course it’s okay for Twilight to…” she paused when she saw Twilight’s new look, accented by her collar. “That’s a new… style.”

“Thanks, I like it,” Twilight said coldly, popping her gum loudly, an action that caused the shy mare to flinch.

Rainbow chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of her head with a hoof. “Uh… did you need help setting up for tea? It’s such a nice day outside. We should totally have it outside. In the sun. With your animal friends.”

Fluttershy blinked, “Oh, no thank you, I can do it. I always have my tea parties outside anyway.”

At least now whatever Twilight does won’t blow up in our faces. What is she even going to do anyways? Wait, I’m supposed to be telling her what to do. Oh man… what can I come up with that won’t destroy my friendship with Fluttershy forever?

As Fluttershy flew back inside her cabin to grab the tea set, Rainbow flew over to Twilight. “Hey, don’t do anything to ‘Shy, alright?”

Twilight glared at her angrily. “Then what are we here for? Just call it quits, Rainbow,” she said through gritted teeth. “I don’t want to do anything to any of my friends, you’re making me!”

“Yeah-yeah-yeah, pipe down before she hears you, okay? Anyways, just don’t do anything that would really scar her, ya know?”

“Everything will scar her!”

Twilight glared at her before finally saying, “Whatever.”

“Good princess.”

Fluttershy returned a moment later. She flew over to a nice sunny spot in the grass and set out a checkered blanket for all of them to sit on. She then set out the cups and a few plates for the snacks she brought out as well.

“So… Fluttershy, how’s it going?” Rainbow asked as she picked up her cup.

Twilight unconsciously levitated the tea kettle and poured some tea into all of their cups, causing Rainbow to let loose a small snicker.

Couldn’t help yourself could you, Sparkles? Rainbow rolled her eyes before taking a sip of the hot tea.

Fluttershy frowned at her friend. Angel glared at her as well, growling angrily.

“Angel doesn’t look too well, Fluttershy. It looks like... oh man! Is his fur falling out?” Rainbow nudged Twilight in the side with her elbow.

Fluttershy’s eyes went wide at that and she spun Angel around against his will to check him over. “I don’t see anything!” The small bunny’s expression turning to one of worry as he checked himself as well.

“Just go!” Rainbow said, her forehooves gesturing for the shy mare to hurry up.

“Right, sorry!” Fluttershy slammed the door shut behind her. Twilight started on a new stick of gum and blew another bubble, the sound of it popping echoing in the silence.

The other animals scampered away at the sound, leaving just the cyan mare and lavender alicorn on the blanket. Rainbow looked at Twilight and saw the strangest expression on her face. The mare was actually smiling. “You enjoyed that, didn’t you?”

“Actually, yeah. Not hurting Fluttershy mind you, but I never liked that bunny all that much.” The smirk returning to her muzzle as she recalled the horrified expression on the little tyrant’s face.

Rainbow could only nod at that; nopony liked that bucking bunny but Fluttershy. “C’mon, I know where we’re going next.”

“Good, because that was a bust if you’re trying to get me to quit.”

“I think there might be somewhat of a vicious streak in you, Twi.”

“Sure,” Rainbow replied chuckling as they took off into the sky, flying high enough to not draw another crowd. For this next part she wanted them to be incognito.

“AJ next?” Twilight asked as they flew over to the farm. “What are we going to do, change all her apples into tangerines?”

“Twilight?” Mr. Cake asked.

“You’ll see,” Rainbow said with a grin, allowing the hoof to back her up a step. “But first we’ve gotta fly to Canterlot.”

“Canterlot? You gonna have me prank Celestia next?” Oh please, please, please no. She would probably take my crown and lock me in a dungeon. Or worse, banish me from Equestria. Or worst! Lock me in a dungeon at the place she banishes me to!

Relief rushed through the alicorn at the words, only for her to roll her eyes at Rainbow’s complete destruction of the word.

“Perseverance. Don’t worry, you’ll get it soon enough,” Twilight said with a chuckle as she took flight for Canterlot right behind Rainbow.

The flight there took the rest of the day. Rainbow made a show of having Twilight prank several different ponies they passed over, but it quickly became more spiteful than fun. It seemed to her that Twilight was dead set on winning this regardless of the damage it might cause.

“Aaaannnd that’s a check!” Twilight Sparkle said as she levitated a scroll in front of her. Everything, so far, had gone just as planned; Princess Celestia would soon pay a visit. Twilight had personally designed the schedule for the day, booking Octavia Melody, a renowned musician, for Celestia’s grand arrival. She had hired the best catering service around. Hiring the staff of Sugarcube Corner, Pinkie Pie and the Cakes themselves had prepared a delightful feast of tasty treats for Celestia to try—and then an entirely separate set of treats for when Pinkie would undoubtedly eat first.

Twilight had even enlisted the rest of her friends to help out. Rarity had, of course, been put in charge of decorating town hall. Applejack built the stage and necessities for the princess to give a last minute speech, should she so choose. Rainbow was asked to keep the sky clear, and even Fluttershy went out of her way to make sure all her cute critters were in matching, adorable suits.

“Princess Twilight, how are the preparations going?” A gray maned mare walked up to the newest princess.

Twilight put away her scroll. “Great. It looks like everything is just about ready, Mayor Mare. We have the banquet ready, the decorations are in place, the red carpet has—quite literally—been rolled out.” Twilight smiled as she looked at the red carpet going from the designated landing spot to the town hall. “The ponies and animals are all nicely lined up, and the music’s ready. It should be a perfect day.”

“Should be?” Mayor Mare asked.

“Well, we’re just waiting on Rainbow Dash to clear the sky,” Twilight replied, looking up.

The mayor’s eyes followed Twilight’s. “The sky looks fine, princess.”

“See, there’s a small group of clouds over there, and there.” Twilight pointed them out to the mayor.

“Well, if she’s going to get to them, she better make it fast,” the mayor said, shrugging.

The mayor walked away. “I still say it’s fine, but if she’s going to do it she better get it done soon. There’s Princess Celestia’s chariot now.”

“Any second now,” Twilight said, keeping a faux smile on her muzzle as her eyes darted from Celestia’s chariot in the distance to the small group of clouds ruining a perfect visit. “Aaaaannnny second now…” The chuckle that left her throat did little to help convey the assurance of her words.

Twilight’s eyes twitched as they automatically fell upon the group of clouds still in the sky. Of her brash friend, there had been no sign. She faked a laugh. “Heh heh, thank you, princess. I’m so happy that your visit went almost perfect.”

“Oh it was more than great, Twilight. I’m so happy I got to come see you, we simply must do this again soon!”

Twilight put on a fake smile as Celestia sat down and nodded to her personal guard to take flight. “Have a great rest of the day, Twilight,” Celestia said as she smiled once more when the chariot took off.

Twilight smiled and waved at Celestia; a well-practiced maneuver for sure. She kept it up until she was one hundred percent sure that the white alicorn was completely out of sight. Then, and only then, did she allow her veneer to fall.

Gone was the forced smile, the bright lavender eyes, and the peaceful mask she wore. Twilight had gone out of her way and planned out every part of Princess Celestia’s visit to Ponyville in meticulous detail, and Rainbow Dash had all but spat on those plans for... whatever reason. Rainbow Dash, the pony that swore she’d never leave Ponyville hanging, or be disloyal to the princesses, had done just that.

The look of pure, unadulterated anger on her face would have frightened a timberwolf. Twilight shot straight up into the air and through the offending clouds herself.

A more rational pony would have just done it themselves; but, at that moment, Twilight was anything but rational. Besides it was the principle of the thing.

Rainbow Dash, you better have one darn good explanation for leaving us high and dry.

The Princess of Friendship was severely enraged. She had spent weeks planning out each and every detail of Celestia’s visit, all the way down from her friends eccentricities to exactly how many steps the princess would take from location A to location B. She had counted on all of her friends to do what they promised her, to do what they agreed to do, and Rainbow Dash of all ponies had fallen short.

Worse, she had betrayed her. Or at least, that’s how it felt.

The skies of Ponyville were filled with a lavender stripe, zipping across the sky as far as the eye could see. Twilight zoomed from location to location, trying to find out exactly what happened to her brash friend, where she was, and why she hadn’t shown up to do the one simple, easy thing that she had promised Twilight she’d do.

Her first stop was Rainbow Dash’s cloud home. She landed at the front door and pounded on it as hard as she could, so hard that had she been in a different mindset, she would have been worried that she’d break it down.

“Rainbow Dash! Wake up!” Twilight shouted angrily.

When no reply came, she shouted again. “Rainbow Dash!”

Annoyed, Twilight powered her horn and teleported inside. She looked around the unkempt living room before running upstairs to see if her friend was passed out in her bedroom. Of Rainbow, there was no sign. She checked each room in turn before ending up in the mare’s kitchen, fuming. “Where are you, Rainbow‽”

Ugh, she’s not here, where could she be? Twilight thought. The options were… limited. Let’s see, she loves practicing, pranks, and napping. She’s not practicing, otherwise I’d have seen her when I looked around town. That leaves pranks. Immediately turning back to the front door, Twilight stomped outside, slamming the door closed behind her. Casting her gaze out on Ponyville below her, she could still where the offending clouds were that that ruined her day and started all this mess, but no cyan pegasus dreaming away the day. Shifting her gaze, she settled upon Sweet Apple Acres. Far in the distance, she could see a few low hanging clouds scattered over the farm, but from the distance she was at she couldn’t see much about them. Charging her horn once more she teleported outside and flew to the apple farm.

Before her hooves even touched the ground, she flapped her wings to fly up to one of the nearest clouds over the border to the forest, just to double check. In a disgusted huff, she saw no sign on the rainbow maned pest she had been searching for.

Twilight landed and began to scan the trees. Sure as apple pie is tasty, after a minute of searching, she saw a white blanket hanging down from one tree branch. She frowned and flew up to the offending pegasus.

“Rainbow Dash!” Twilight basically screamed in Rainbow’s ear; the princess’s glare settled hard and cold on her friend.

With a yawn and a smack of her lips, Rainbow just rolled over on the tree branch, a hoof trying to wave the princess away, almost like she was an offending gnat.

Twi’s right eye started to twitch, angrily. “YES IT WAS TODAY!” She flew around her friend, almost as if she were attacking her from different angles with her words alone. “YOU promised you’d be there, YOU agreed you’d have the skies clear by two p.m. YOU COMPLETELY ruined everything!”

“Come on Twilight, it was just some clouds. I’m sure Celestia didn’t even notice, and if she did big whoop. It’s the sky, clouds are supposed to be in the sky.” Rainbow waved it off with a hoof,

“If you can do it for one day, then I’ll leave you alone about your behavior, if you can’t, you gotta start taking your responsibilities seriously.” Twilight poked her in the chest with a hoof. “What’s wrong, Rainbow, you chicken?”

“Uh-huh. But you have to win the dare, and to do that you’re gonna have to give up being so uptight. After all, if you think it’s so simple to change things about yourself, why don’t you try it?” Rainbow’s grin grew wider.

What’s she playing at? All I have to do is act exactly like I used to before I met my friends? This’ll be a piece of cake? No… that smile on her face, she’s gotta… wait, this is Rainbow I’m thinking of, I can outsmart her. After all, it’s just one day. How much can really happen in one day?

Twilight’s frown became a smile, and then a grin. “You know what Rainbow? I accept your dare. I’ll send Spike to stay at Rarity’s for a day, and starting tomorrow morning, you’re on.”

“You think this is going to be easy, huh?” Rainbow just chuckled.

“The easiest thing in the world,” Twilight said with a matching smile.
