Waking Up

Waking up can be like a mixed bag; sometimes it’s god awful, and other times pleasant. Some, though, are to remember and savour with the comfort and pure bliss they give. Rarely had Scootaloo had one of these encounters, many years spent sleeping alone proved that it wasn’t something to fuss over.

This morning, however, was about to change that perception for her…

A soft groan escaped the filly’s lips as her body began the startup process of a morning routine she’d been accustomed to. However, today felt a lot different, softer, quieter and a lot warmer. However, with her current state of mind, Scootaloo hadn’t come to enough to think of anything else, and could do little but crack a faint smile at the sensations. As her body began to regain control, her mind started whirling back to life with the memories of the past she’d left behind.

As her brain got reacquainted with reality, Scootaloo instantly began to feel just how soft her world was, the feeling on her fur was nearly enough on its own to send sleep crashing back down. The mere thought caused a flinch in her hind leg, seeming to kickstart something else entirely. The action began stirring something else in the world around Scootaloo, causing her eyelids to finally lose their weight. Cracking one eye open, the filly was surprised not to be blinded with Celestia's sun, only to be surrounded by what looked to be the sky blue of a very distinct looking pony. This caused thoughts to begin flooding her very limited thinking space at this current stage of the morning. As she processed all she could remember of the day before, a sudden force began pulling her closer to the warmth, letting a small gasp of air escape her lungs before she was pressed up against the indescribable sensation. She immediately let her eyelids fall again with her body seemingly being content on staying perfectly still.

Her back, however, began to feel small tickles as the feeling of individual feathers began to worm their way into the fur, bringing with it an almost blanket-like feeling. Once they were intertwined, they quickly locked into place, holding her small frame securely; her lips let out a small whimper at the feeling. Then, suddenly, a small voice out of nowhere shattered the peaceful silence.

“Momma’s here, Scootaloo, you can go back to sleep if you want.”

That one sentence, it had the action to not only obliterate Scootaloo’s mind, but also rebuild it at the same time with all the pieces of the puzzle her brain had not been able to fathom over the last few minutes. That voice tipped an almost natural instinct within the filly, her eyes immediately fluttering open as she looked towards the source. Immediately, her jaw dropped at the sight of a smiling Rainbow, her eyes content as her magenta orbs radiated a gentle look back at her. She began to feel a hoof slowly crawl over her mane, gently flicking a few strands away as the mare only broadened her smile before speaking again.

“So, I take it my little filly doesn’t feel like sleeping anymore?”

Scootaloo couldn’t respond even if she’d wanted to, her brain had been hit with so many emotions and feelings at once. She was cuddling her… mother? The word felt like ancient history in her mind, but brought butterflies into her stomach as she quickly came to the realisations of the weeks gone by; the good, the bad, the mishaps, the tears of joy… the adoption.

As quickly as it had flooded in, Scootaloo felt a beaming smile come to her cheeks as she awoke fully, quickly nuzzling into the fur that held the safety and security she would always crave for. A soft giggle from the other mare alerted her to the fact that she hadn’t yet responded to her mother’s earlier question.

“I-I’m good, M-Mommy,” came the best stumbled reply she could give, recieving another loving snuggle in return, which only made her cheeks flush heavily with blood.

“Guess it’s still gonna take a while for you to get used to it, huh?” the mare whispered playfully as her iconic rainbow tail wrapped around Scootaloo’s own in another layer of protection.

“You could say that,” Scootaloo replied, her blush beginning to fade away.

“Maybe I’m just too awesome of a Mommy, huh?” Rainbow began with one of her trademark grins, gently squeezing the filly in her hold, the bed softly dipping to the movement of their cuddling. Scootaloo only tried to get further into the other pony, drinking up the affection and extra warmth wholeheartedly as she giggled in response to her mother's reply. She couldn’t argue with the clear truth in front of her.

“You’re the best Mommy,” Scootaloo agreed, earning a nuzzle from the pony in question.

“I’m glad you think so, cause Momma thinks you’re the best filly,” came the playful reply as Rainbow gently bopped her on the snout before pulling away, content to stare lovingly while Scootaloo seemed to travel in her own sea of comfort. Scootaloo was happy with this too, letting out slow breaths as she squirmed to get the best position, but something wasn’t sitting right with her as she began kicking her back legs to the discomfort.

Rainbow quickly noticed this, and a grin spread across her lips. “Looks like my special little filly needs a good preening.”

“Huh?” came Scootaloo’s unfocused response, still squirming somewhat to try and rectify the situation herself, the pain in her back only seeming to become more irritating with every passing second. Rainbow rolled her eyes in amusement as she hoisted the filly up, Scootaloo immediately feeling the cold as she shivered slightly from the sudden loss in warmth. Quickly, she was placed onto her mother's belly, providing her with the luxurious heat once more. The new position allowed Rainbow to quickly get to work on her filly as Scootaloo continued her daydreams in peace, spreading her wings out as she lay there happily. However, the warmth was quickly enveloped by something else.

The soft, careful touch of her mother's lips to her feathers brought sensations tingling down her spine. She snuggled closer as she felt the teeth grip onto the feathers before gently tugging and moving individual primaries. Scootaloo knew very well that this act was only to be carried out between mother and daughter, but it felt beyond anything she had once given the word awesome to.

The sudden feeling of pain quickly shocked her system as her mother pulled out the culprit to Scootaloo’s irritation. The jagged feather was quickly discarded before a soft caress soothed the wing. Rainbow smiled at a job well done, taking a moment to look over the feathers once more to make sure she hadn’t missed anything. “You alright? Momma didn’t hurt you too bad did she?”

Scootaloo shook her head lightly in response as she softly napped on her mother's stomach, opening one eye to see a freshly preened wing, and smiling at the work, “You do it a lot better than I can,” she complimented.

“All comes with the practice,” Rainbow smiled as she nuzzled behind the filly’s ear.

Scootaloo sighed contently as she buried her head back into Rainbows fur, her mind swimming with thoughts about how much life had changed since the adoption. Never did she think the pegasus she’d idolized for so long would end up being her mother, but Scootaloo wouldn’t have it any other way than that. While things had been a little bumpy at first with the two ponies new to both the parenting and antics, it had all long settled down into something both mares were happy to stomach.

All those days before the adoption only seemed like a bad dream at this point. Scootaloo knew this wasn’t the case, but with all the care, affection, and warmth that Rainbow had provided, she was content to believe that. Even with the given circumstances, she wouldn’t have it any other way, as long as it meant that she could continue to smile with the best mother in the world.

Scootaloo felt weightlessness as she was lifted in the air once again, shivering at the cold as she was settled down to the side. The cold feeling didn’t last long as Rainbow wrapped her back up. Her wings, tail, and body provided all the warmth that the filly needed. Scootaloo sighed in contentment as she nuzzled back against her mother, she let a grin spread across her lips as she felt her eyes beginning to get heavy once again, she could wait a few more hours before leaping into the world. One that she would be happy to share by her mother's side.
