This One Summer
Chapter 1
Load Full StoryThe cars honked at each other along the crowded highway as the early afternoon sun beat down on them. A purple haired girl read her book, pushing her glasses up her nose. She absentmindedly began chewing on her nails.
"Twilight. Nails." Her mother said, eyeing her in the mirror. She put her hand down from her mouth.
"So how's the book going sweetie?" Her father asked. Twilight put a bookmark in and closed the book.
"Fine."
"What are you reading now?"
"The Fault in Our Stars."
"What's it about?"
"A girl with cancer."
"That sounds...depressing. Did you bring anything happy?" Twilight shrugged her shoulders and the silence resumed. She opened up the book and continued reading. Her goal was to read fifty books by the end of the summer; so far she had read three, and bought like twenty with her. Not including comic books and manga's.
"Twilight we're here." Her mother said, snapping the girl from her book. She put it in her overstuffed backpack and climbed out. The air smelled amazing, a small breeze blew the stands of hair that weren't tucked into her pony tail as she starred at the house she spent every summer since, forever. She went to the trunk and pulled out her suitcase and duffal bag. Her mom pulled out the keys and unlocked the front door to the small house. Twilight immediately ran to her bedroom and belly flopped onto the bed. She sat up and emptied her bags. She put away her clothes and her books, and then ran to her mother; who was unpacking the snack bag.
"Can I go to Sunset's now?" She asked, bouncing on the balls of her feet.
"Did you unpack?" Her mother asked, slipping some soda into the fridge. Twilight nodded. "Then yes." Twilight began running toward the place where Sunset's mother parked the house. Sunset and her mother lived in a tiny movable home. Not a trailer, a tiny house on wheels. They never seemed to stay in one place too long, but they always came back to East Ponyville every summer. She soon came across the clearing where they always parked their house. And the house was indeed sitting there, with the red pickup truck next to it. She rapped on the door, smiling like a ninny. Celestia, Sunset's mother, greeted her.
"Oh my goodness! Look at you!" Celestia was a very laid back person. She was a photographer, and always wanted to go see other places. Sunset was her adopted daughter. "Sunset! Twilight's here!" She called. A red and yellow haired girl peaked her head out from the loft where she slept.
"Hey."
"Hey." Twilight answered back, making her way to the ladder.
"I'll be outside girls."
"'Kay mom." Sunset said. Twilight made it up and sat down on Sunset's bed. Her walls and ceiling were covered with pictures, each with a location and date written on them in the corner. One showed Sunset at the beach with 'Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 2005' written in the corner. Another showed Sunset smiling next to Mickey Mouse's Walk of Fame Star, 'Hollywood Walk of Fame, 2008' was written in the corner. And another one had Sunset standing under the St. Louis Arch, 'St Louis, Missouri, 2011'. A more recent one showed Sunset wearing Mickey Mouse ears and smiling in front of the Cinderella's Castle in Disney World, 'Disney World, Christmas 2014'. Other ones with Sunset standing on a mountain, standing in front of landmarks, and playing in lakes and oceans.
"So um," Twilight started awkardly, "how are you?"
"Fine. You?"
"Survied 8th grade, so that's a good thing."
"Yeah, I'm glad I'm homeschooled." She said blowing a piece of yellow hair out of her eye.
