A Sunset Romance
Today was the day he told himself staring into the mirror you look great, you feel great and you’ve had several intelligent conversations. You’re going to tell her today how you feel about her. She’ll either accept you and you’ll gain a marefriend or she’ll say she doesn’t feel the same and crush you soul in two never to be repaired again.
Marshall Note shook his head. He couldn’t think about it like that. Of course she liked him, she’d even said that he was about the only stallion she could talk to without feeling like they didn’t understand. She liked him and she’d be there briskly at 11 to study and he’d be right there to get her whichever book she needed.
She had this grip on him. He couldn’t explain it. All he knew was that she was smart, funny, in her own way, dependable and she was really nice no matter what other people say. Re rolled his eyes, other ponies who didn’t take the time to get to know her judged her calling her unsociable and stuck up. But once you broke her unsecure exterior she was sweet and kind.
Marshall Note trotted through the doors of the library meant for students and privileged ponies. Moonlight was there occasionally. He had to hand it to his little sister, she how to pull strings. Hell Marshall Note wasn’t even a unicorn but he was a Pegasus in love. And that’s really all that matters right?
He trotted happily nervous over to the back room where he had to check in. What was it with unicorns and organization? After checking in her flew across the hall to where he was in charge of keeping the ‘Magical spells, objects, and creatures’ section organized and help anypony who needed his help.
His eyes were immediately drawn to the table in the corner, very secluded, in between magical items and magical spells. It was empty. She was running late.
He landed in his spot at the desk where his assistant Book Mark greeted him. “Marshall! Guess what?”
“What?” he was worried that maybe something was wrong, Sunset was never late. She was always dependably on time. Arriving here precisely at 8 exactly one hour before him.
“A spot opened up at the school!”
Marshall looked over at him, “A spot opened? Did someone leave?”
Book Mark laughed, “Apparently she had the guts to yell at Celestia and confront her about not moving her education farther fast enough.”
“What?” Marshall said surprised. Hadn’t he talked to her about her frustration with her progression?
“Yea. Celestia, of course, told her to have patience. Ya know, it takes patience to become truly accomplished. Anyway she yelled and screamed and then someone say that she stormed out and Celestia fallowed her. She apparently left. That was earlier this morning. About a half an hour before that truly gifted kid blew a whole threw the auditorium roof.” Book Mark just continued about this gifted purple unicorn while Marshall’s heart fell.
So Sunset left the academy and wouldn’t be coming today. Should have done it yesterday Marshall. He beat himself up There was an opening as you walked her to the doors. You could have asked her then and then she wouldn’t have left.
“But good riddance.” Book Mark said as he grabbed Marshall’s attention. “She was so rude and such a know it all. She never came to any of the class parties and she always had her muzzle buried in a book, she was just rude and I’m not gonna miss her.”
Marshall licked his lips, “What was her name?” Please no…. He thought holding onto ever ounce of hope he could muster.
“Something warm. I guess everyone always said she was the opposite of her name. I think it was like Sunset Glimmer…. No Sunset Shimmer. More like Dark and rude.”
“Don’t talk about her like that.” Marshall snapped.
“I wasn’t talking about your marefriend.” A small filly said from the other side of the desk. All that could be seen was he top of her big bushy brown ponytail.
Marshall would know that voice anywhere. He leaned over the desk a tried, failing, to put a small smile on his face for her. “What can I do for you Moonlight?”
Moonlight Script gazed up at her brother with her chocolate brown eyes, “I came to see how your doing. I just heard about Sunset.”
Marshall felt his face droop, “I’m fine.”
Moonlight glared at him, “Lire, lire, flanks on fire.”
Marshall took a steadying breath walking around the desk and leaning his head down to whisper to his sister. “I’m fine sis. I’ll see you when I come home tonight alright?”
Moonlight nodded and hugged her brother, “Bye Marshall.”
For the rest of the day Marshall Note trudged through his work and at the end of his shift went to the castle and sat in the garden.
This had been her favorite place to read. She loved it especially at sunset.
He sat on the grass by the bench where she’d sat telling him about how one day she would be an important pony in Equestrian society. Ponies would come to her for advice, she’d be like a third princess. Since there was Celestia and Princess Mi Amore Cadenza.
He sat there for a few minutes thinking about her. Her luscious mane, shiny coat, intelligent mind, great sense of humor.
“I see I’m not the only one who will miss her.” A regal voice said from the darkness.
I turned and saw Princess Celestia standing close by. “Your highness?”
“You’re sitting here missing Sunset Shimmer are you not?” she said her hair flowing even though there was no wind.
He nodded, “Yes. I loved her.”
“As did I young colt. As did I.” she stood there for a moment until she spoke again. “I hope she will come back one day. I plan to keep an eye out for her.” She bent down and looked at him eye to eye, “I know she cared for you though.”
He nodded. At least he knew she cared. Sunset Shimmer would always be Marshall Note’s first true love.
