When human Twilight and Sunset absorbed all of that magic it sent out a huge spike in magical energy that was felt all across the globe. It was picked up by a certain lost legend of the days long since past.
And when pony Twilight shows up she only confirms this character's suspicions that the exiled equestrian magic has been allowed entry to his realm. This sets off daisy chain of events all of which is leading to Equestria's darkest days.
