Chapter 1
“Of all the things that could have happened, this is the WORST. POSSIBLE. THING”
Pain.
Pain and suffering is something that is guaranteed in the wasteland. There is no possible way to hide from the endless amounts of it. Most of the time you don’t even see it coming. It’ll just be there poking at you and making its presence known. Or in a dark alley creeping and waiting for someone to come by.
And at this moment, I was becoming very acquainted with it.
“Scarlett are you okay?” questioned a familiar feminine voice. The voice came from my left side following the growing noise of hooves trotting up next to me. “Goddesses you look like shit.”
Gee, thanks... I thought to myself unable to find my voice. As I turned my head, with a spike of pain that informed me that I must’ve banged my head pretty hard, I could make out the pale yellow colored hooves of the mare kneeling beside me, rummaging through her saddlebags to get what I assumed to be a healing potion.
“Here, drink this.” she said as she guided the bottle to my lips. I immediately began to feel the healing magic as it coursed through my body fixing the many wounds I had sustained right before my eyes. Finishing the last sip, she disposed of the bottle and helped me get on my hooves. As the blurriness in my eyes started to slowly fade away, I could make out others that had came along as well.
“Ugh. Took you guys long enough,” I said through a raspy voice, picking up my saddlebags and putting them on.
“Yeah, sorry about that. We saw you go down but we were ambushed by a couple of raiders before we could get to you,” she said as she ran a hoof through her green mane. Lorraine had been a dear friend of mine ever since we left Stable 102. As fillies, we would always dream of going out into the wasteland and making it a better place. Helping the many that were suffering out there. But to our dismay, those types of thoughts were typically shunned in the stable. The stable didn’t want to be associated with the outside world at all. They were scared of the unknown.
My mother and father both knew of my strong desire to help others, and often allowed me to partake in their duties to assist them when they needed it. It was one of the best things to do in the stable to me. I even got to help the overmare once in organizing a celebration of the ‘Stable New Years’, as they liked to call it.
“We should get you to a doctor. The healing potion can only do so much for your wounds,and you might have some internal bleeding.” she said as I tried standing on my own.
“I’m fine. Let's just keep moving,” I lied, struggling to keep myself upright.
“Sure we can do that if you want to die. Scarlett, you were shot a dozen times by the looks of it, and it looks like a couple of them were hollow points. Your wings are also shot to shit so you can’t fly anyways,” she said as I look at my wings. Indeed they were shot up pretty bad. “Come on, let's get you to the wagon and there you can rest until we get you to a doctor.”
A little rest did sound pretty good right now. I have been scouting the ground from the air to alert my comrades if any threat was ahead for about three hours now. Although I do love flying, it tends to wear a pony out after long periods of it.
I nodded allowing her to help me to my hooves once again. As we slowly trotted to the wagon, I could already feel myself on the verge of passing out.
