"Bubble, we need more cinna rolls up front!"
"On it, Mrs Cake!"
Bubble Berry was little more than a blur as he sped through the bakery of Sugarcube Corner. It was only a little after eight in the morning, yet the young man's apron was already smeared on flour, batter, frosting, icing and blotches of at least three kinds of jelly. Bubble Berry didn't care though. He was in his element.
With practiced ease he navigated the cluttered room, somehow able to avoid not cause an even bigger mess. He was too good for that of course. If Bubble Berry made a mess in the kitchen it's because had meant to do so, not by cause of accident. The counters were stacked with mixing bowls, whisks, wooden spoons, spatulas, rolling pins, cookie trays, muffin trays, cake trays, piping bags and a menagerie of baking utensils that got a thorough workout most every day.
The cinnamon rolls were already done and had been resting in a specially made warmer for the better part of a few minutes. No sooner did Bubble Berry open the door that his nostrils were tickled by the spicy sweet aroma of cinnamon and sugar. The cinnamon pastries were nearly the size of his head, and all of them a smooth golden brown. Having worked the past two years at Sugarcube Corner one would think Bubble Berry would have gotten sick of looking at pastries, an unfortunate phenomena that had taken hold of most of his co-workers.
Not so much for Bubble Berry. Even then his mouth watered and he would have liked nothing more than to take a big bite out of a piping hot roll and maybe wash it down with a cold glass of milk. He didn’t, though. Mrs. Cake didn’t like it when he nibbled on the job and he did not want to disappoint her.
Donning a pair of oven mitts, he took out both trays and, after finding some room, set them down, grabbed an equally warm bowl of icing and spooned the white, sugary goodness onto the rolls, making sure they all got a thorough coating.
“Look out beloooow!” Bubble Berry called out as he went out the door to the front of the bakery, balancing a hot tray in each hand.
Already he could see Sugarcube Corner was packed, nary a booth or table empty and more customers still waiting to be served at the counter. There in the corner booth were Roseluck, Daisy and Lily Valley. Macaroons, snickerdoodles and butter cookies were their usuals. Daisy and Roseluck were fond of lattes, while Lily Valley gravitated more towards Chai tea.
There was Derpy, eyes wide and alight as she bent next to the display counter, biting her lip and looking at the selection of muffins on display, unsure which would be the lucky one to make a one way trip through her tummy. Bubble Berry would bet she’d go for blueberry. It was by far her favorite and not two days ago had the post girl declared she was going on a diet, and would limit her carb intake to only one muffin a day.
His friends Time Turner and Big Mac waved from a nearby table, the former working on a bear claw while Mac had already polished off two apple fritters and was working on a third. Bubble Berry sighed and rolled his eyes good naturedly. He had tried many times to get his big friend to sample any other of Sugarcube Corner’s excellent alternatives-- two hundred and twenty six times, to be exact, yet the apple farmer never strayed. One day, Big Mac. One day…
Having set up the rolls for display, Bubble Berry figured they were well stocked on pastries for the next few minutes. He caught Mrs. Cake’s eye and she gave him a smile and a nod. Grinning from ear to ear, Bubble Berry discarded his apron and practically leapt off the counter to make his rounds.
It was by far the better part of his day. Bubbly. Social. Outgoing. All traits the denizens of Ponyville had associated with the young man. Everyone in the bakery was a regular and all the regulars were acquainted in some way or another with the affable Bubble Berry. It filled him with no small amount of fulfillment and ride to see so many smiling faces enjoying his handmade goods.
He made his usual rounds, chatting up the customers, who received him with smiles of their own. Guys and girls. Men and women. Young and old. He greeted Ms. Harshwhinny with exuberance, the older mare sitting by herself at a table and even though it was a Sunday, she was wearing her usual school attire. Perfectly pressed, nothing creased and not a hair out of place. A coffee always, black, and a plain donut, and every once in a while she’d go for an orange scone. “A good morning to you, mister Berry,” was her polite response and the faintest trace of a smile on her usually thin lips. She was rather fond of Bubble Berry, who despite her normally stiff demeanor, never greeted her without his patented brand of enthusiasm. If only he was as dedicated in class…
His cousins, Berry Punch and Cherry Berry were there as well. Oh, how he remembered those silly times he spent at their parents’ berry farm. Camping out in the barn at night, fishing at the local pond and those silly little pretend scenarios in which they’d get married and play house. Berry Punch was working on her third slice of rum cake and there were rumors going around that she’d bring whiskey or bourbon to school and disguise it in bottles of apple juice. It would certainly explain some things, like the last time Bubble Berry spent the night over and his cousin tried to make out with him, only to fall asleep almost immediately, or her penchant to wear sunglasses indoors.
His cousins greeted him cheerfully, and he them. But Bubble Berry couldn't dawdle. There were customers who needed some attention, so he excused himself and, in a display of speed, endurance, balance and contortions that one would normally associate with a monkey on Ritalin, Bubble Berry moved like a human possessed.
The morning and lunch rushes were really one and the same at Sugarcube Corner, and so it wasn't until after two that the small staff at the bakery could take a moment to catch their breath.
Bubble Berry sat on one of the benches across the street from Sugarcube Corner, and accompanying him was Rainbow Dash, who a few months ago had started working as a cashier. The athletic tomboy plopped down unceremoniously beside Bubble Berry, loosening the bowtie on her shirt's collar and expelling an exaggerated sigh, as if she could breathe properly for the first time in years.
"Ahh, that feels good."
Bubble Berry chuckled beside her. "Aw, come on, Rainbow Dash. It wasn't all bad."
"Speak for yourself," Dash said thickly, chewing on a chicken salad sandwich, a lunchbox resting between her thighs. "I mean, you know me, Bubble Berry. I can keep going on all day, but those rushes are unreal! I dunno how you're so chipper after running all over the place."
"That, Rainbow Dash, is nothing but my own Bubble Berry Bubbliness that keeps me feeling like a crisp spring morning," the boy chirped, downing an eclair in two massive bites, his own lunchbox filled with four different kinds of baked goods.
"Hmph, lucky. I could use some of that Bubbliness right about now," Rainbow said slyly. "If only there was a way for me to get somm'a that.
Bubble Berry had an uncharacteristically ponderous frown on his face. "A way for me to share my own Bubble Berry Bubbliness? How would I even do that?"
Rainbow shrugged noncommittally, directly avoiding eye contact. "Oh, you know, I'm just spitballing here, but your Bubbliness might rub off on me if... You know..."
"Hm? What is it, Rainbow Dash?" Bubble Berry asked tentatively, titling his head downwards to catch Rainbow's eye.
"I-if we were to spend some more time together," she blurted out in a rush, and her cheeks took on the faintest rosy tint.
"Oh, you mean like besides work?" Bubble Berry asked, oblivious to Rainbow's ulterior motive.
"Well... yeah, you know," the girl hesitated, fiddling with a lock of her prismatic hair. "Like if we were to spend a little time together. It might rub off or something, or... whatever."
Bubble Berry grinned widely. "That sounds like a stupendous idea, Rainbow Dash!"
"It does?" Rainbow asked with no small amount of surprise.
"Sure!" Bubble Berry nodded enthusiastically. "I always have time to spend with a friend. Oh, but can we do it tomorrow instead? Today is trial day at Sugarcube Corner."
"Trial day? What's that?"
"It's when Mrs. Cake and I try out new recipes to serve at the bakery. It's how we manage to come up with all kinds of tasty treats for everyone to enjoy."
Rainbow sighed in exasperation. "Jeezaloo, Bubble, don't you get tired of working bread and batter all day?"
Bubble Berry shook his head merrily, his mouth full of jelly donut. "Nope-a-dope nope."
Rainbow rolled her eyes good naturedly. Bubble Berry's perky, honest demeanor was a refreshing break from all those single minded jocks. It was the reason the young man had grown on her when she first started working at his bakery.
Naturally, Rainbow would prefer to spend her days eating and sleeping, with sports and outdoors in between, but an adolescent girl will always fall prey to that one dilemma they all share, something that transcends the boundaries of cliques, grades, gender or backgrounds. Namely, the need for cold, hard cash.
Her first day at the job did not start out all too pleasant. She had to wake up at four thirty in the morning, an unholy time where she actually found herself nodding off in the shower. Of course, attending a party and not getting home until one in the morning was probably not the best idea.
As if that wasn't bad enough she was forced to wear a dweebish uniform. Black slacks, black shoes, a pressed white shirt, that ridiculous little bowtie and an outdated maroon vest. Further rubbing salt in the wound, Mrs. Cake flipped out when she saw Rainbow's unrestrained, wind blown hair and demanded that the surly girl tie it up into a bun. A bun! On Rainbow Dash!
The morning deteriorated even further as she was expected to help the restaurant's weird baker get all of Sugarcube Corner's goods hot and ready by the time they opened. Rainbow expected this to be an easy gig. Just go into the fridge, get a roll of frozen cookie dough, unwrap, slice and cook. Even she could go that, but to the tomboy's dismay, she quickly found out almost all of the food offered by Sugarcube Corner was hand made from scratch each day. Of course, Rainbow Dash knew as much about actual baking as she did about astrophysics. It was a disaster. In the first hour of her pitiful attempts at baking she'd burnt three fingers, her right elbow. She spilled a funky smelling yeast based batter on her stomach, dropped a big tray of muffins; mistook sugar for salt, the result a very unpalatable buttermilk frosting, and unintentionally substituted the all-purpose flour needed for flaky, buttery croissants with bread flour, rendering the finished product a tough, chewy, plaster-like mess.
She'd stormed out the back door, ashamed of her clumsiness and very near tears of frustration. Bubble Berry followed quickly, and Rainbow regarded him with hostility. She didn't have a very high opinion of the young man back then. Yes, she would occasionally see him in school but she'd never talked to him, and even when she and her friends visited Sugarcube Corner on a regular basis, their interactions never went beyond placing an order. And then there was his attitude. At first glance Rainbow pegged him for a goofball and not all that bright. His perky and chipper attitude so early in the morning irked her to no end and she had been downright rude to him, as she perceived his helpful attitude and kindness with mockery and condescension, as if he thought she was too dumb and had to talk slow to get the message across.
She told him all this and more, yet the young man did not bat an eye. He wasn't there to poke fun or to mock her. As soon as she finished her tirade, he drew close and enveloped Rainbow in a firm, yet silken hug. For her part, Rainbow was much too stunned to do much but tense up and make odd gurgling noises at the contact. It wasn't like the hugs she'd gotten from her many brief flings before. There was no lust, just warmth. Genuine warmth and a desire to make her feel better. It was like nothing she experienced before... Besides family, but that didn't count, and while Rainbow would normally knock his lights out for such audacity, she couldn’t help but lean in. What happened then was a bit foggy, but she remembered Bubble Berry. He’d been so understanding, so nice, so compassionate. He actually cared about her and wanted her to feel better, to be happy. No guy had ever behaved like that. They wanted one thing and one thing only. Sure, not all of them were like that, but Rainbow only sought companionship with guys who shared her likes and interests, and unfortunately, jocks were at the top of the list. And of course, she wouldn’t be caught dead dating a nerd or a geek. Plus, they were too boring for her.
But Bubble Berry… he was not. He was nice, he was funny, he could always keep her engaged and his energy and zest for life easily outclassed hers. He could keep up with even her considerable stamina and brazen approach to life and not say lame things like ‘slow down’ or ‘I’m getting tired’. As the days and the weeks went on and Rainbow got to know Bubble Berry, the more she found out she liked him… ‘liked him’ like him. She hoped Bubble Berry would share the same feelings and their friendship could grow into something more.
Unfortunately for her, Bubble Berry’s… uniqueness was a bit of a double edged sword. The boy simply seemed to have no concept of romance and to her endless frustration, was oblivious to any hints she would throw his way, and she’d tried everything! She tried rubbing up against him, touching his arm longer than was appropriate(and on later attempts, softly stroking it), she would sit or stand closer than friends should, on their outings she would stretch in ways that would accentuate her taut, toned butt and bring attention to her pert chest-- heck, she had even tried to position herself so that when he was unawares, his arm would come into contact with said assets and had nothing to show for it!

It gave her a hint of hope, but she also realized that what she was doing so far wasn’t working. As far as Bubble Berry was concerned, her plot to get him to share some of his Bubbliness was simply another outing between friends.
But she was Rainbow Dash. When she saw something she wanted, she went for it with her all. She had been too hesitant and unsure where Bubble Berry was concerned, and all because of his own uniqueness. The very same uniqueness that haunted Rainbow’s thoughts at night and where she would have to work fast to get some much needed relief. The kid’s gloves were off! Rainbow would not dawdle anymore. She would outright ask him if he’d like for them to become a couple… and hopefully help relieve her itches, but that was further down the line. All she had to do was turn her head, open her mouth and take that very first step.
“Sooo, Bubble, do you have a girlfriend?” At that moment, two urges warred for supremacy within Rainbow’s mind: to punch herself or die from embarrassment.
But Bubble Berry had no idea of the inner workings of Rainbow’s mind. “Silly Rainbow. You know I don’t have a girlfriend. If I did, it would be you.”
Dash very nearly choked on her mouthful of chocolate milk. “I’m your… wha?”
“You know. If I did have a girlfriend then it would be you. You’re the girl I spend the most time with. Well, you and Berry Punch, but she can’t be my girlfriend.”
Rainbow groaned. Of course, what else would he have meant? She’d have to try something else. “Okay, but, have you ever have you ever been with anyone else?”
“Nnnnope,” Bubble Berry said cheerfully as he practically swallowed an entire muffin in one bite.
“So you’ve never kissed another girl?”
“Nop… oh, wait, yes. Yes I have. Why?”
“Juuust curious,” Rainbow replied.
“Bubble Berry giggled. “Oh, Rainbow Dash. You’re so random.”
Rainbow smiled and muttered under her breath, “Said the pot to the kettle.”
“Hm, what was that?”
“I said, do you want to go to the arcade tomorrow?”
Bubble Berry nodded enthusiastically. “Sure! That’s one of my favorite places.”
“It’s a plan, then. See you after work?”
“I’ll be there, Rainbow. I can’t wait.”

Bubble Berry cheerfully bounced back to Sugarcube Corner. It was like a second home to him. Mrs. Cake had been best friends with his own mother back when they attended Canterlot High and oftentimes when he was a baby and his parents were busy working, it was Mrs. Cake who would take care of him. He was fond of referring to her as his unofficial second mom, and why shouldn't he? She cared for him, cooked for him, changed his diapers and opened her home to him. Of course, Bubble Berry loved his own parents very much and he knew they loved him, but even he had to admit that affection was not something they doled out freely. Mrs. Cake, though, affection was something she was not hurting on.
Heck, it was the reason why he practically lived at Sugarcube Corner. Well, that and his undying love for sweets and pastries. It was an arrangement most would consider strange, to say the least, but given he was Bubble Berry, practically everyone shrugged it off as another of his quirks. And his parents? Well, they raised an eyebrow, but quickly enough seemed to take it as a given.
It was just after three in the afternoon, and it meant the store would close down for the day, meaning Mrs. Cake would need a helping hand in cleaning down the kitchen.
Walking in the front door, Bubble Berry immediately spotted her behind the counter, a towel in hand and in the process of wiping it down.
“Hiya, Mrs. Cake!”
“Hello, Bubble. Good to see you… oh!” the shop owner exclaimed in surprise as the energetic young man latched on to her in a full bodied hug.

Drapes and curtains were closed, doors were locked, lights were dimmed(why the Cakes installed dimmers instead of normal switches is anybody's guess), tables were cleared away and the shop looked as clean and tidy as opening day.
