Entry 1: Introductions
I suppose that this’ll be the first part of my journal… Hi there, Journal, or Reader. I guess I’ll just refer to this piece of writing as “Journal,” because I’m not too sure who’ll all be reading. So let’s have some fun together! This will contain my personal thoughts, adventures, and my feelings. Papa always said that a stallion should keep their feelings to themselves, so to not bear their weight on the world; but I feel a tad differently.
I’m just a simple pony with the simple name of Brocky Brambles, with simple words, from a simple farm down south of Canterlot, south east of Appleloosa, sitting at the base of the Macintosh Hills. We farmed apples, carrots, and rocks. I’m not too sure why we farmed rocks, but we did nonetheless, simply. Papa was a strong stallion, who taught me the ways of the farm, to take a challenge, and to wrangle the cows up. Mama was a small mare who always made the food outta what we farmed, teaching me how to cook, read, and write.
At night, when Mama tucked my sisters (all six of’em) and me into bed, she’d always tell us stories of the Moon, and the Sun, and how they had fought in the past, but were now the Sisters of the Skies once more. I’d look at the moon, wondering why the two most beautiful things in the world would fight. The moon’s right pretty. After those stories, she spoke softly of how if we were good children, we might get to meet Princess Luna in our dreams. Luna’s right pretty too; I’ve seen posters round Appleloosa when we were selling our product, even if those were just black and white.
My fondest memory of my dreaming was one night, when I was having trouble obtaining my cutie mark right toward the age of fourteen; I still hadn’t gotten it, even as the oldest. All my sisters had gotten’em ,and I still wasn’t quite there. It made me a tad right upset now, and I was getting frustrated with it. Papa always said that if I was mad, I could go kick at the trees out back, which is what I did that night. As I headed out back, the area ‘round me started to get a bit more foggy than the usual was this early in the morning, and I was a bit cold.
Right as I started kicking away at the trees, I heard something flapping on the wind, like a big bird had grabbed itself onto the drafts that were pushing the fog. Looking upward, I didn’t even see the moon. It was like the trees had moved themselves into the way of my eyesight, and were hiding a big pair of eyes, bright and staring down at me. My heart began to pump, and thoughts were racing through my mind, ya hear? Where was I? How did I get here? Where’s the moon?
Then I heard her voice. Oh my goodness, Journal, it was so pretty. I saw those big pair of lookers blink a few times, slowly, and a large, fantastic Alicorn step out of the tree line toward me. She spoke so smoothly, so educatedly.
“Hello there, Brocky. I see you have some troubles,” miss Luna said to me. My heart was beating so fast, I swear it must’ve popped and echoed for miles. I blushed, looking down at her hooves; even those were pretty, Journal! I couldn’t help myself. She looked so wonderful.
“Y-yes ma’am, havin’ some right ol’ trouble with my cutie mark,” I murmured to her, drooping my gaze at the ground in front of me, so she didn’t catch my staring. Her trodding had called my attention again, and my eyes widened. as I felt one of her front hooves take my chin, slowly bringing it up to her face.
“My boy, you have no reason to fret. All ponies go through some trouble regarding their cutie mark at some point.” She took her hoof off of my chin, leaving me staring at her face with eyes so wide they must’ve beaten Mama’s dinner portions for Papa and me. My mouth was agape, shocked that she had come out here to see me! Me of all ponies, I was lucky enough to see the Princess of the Night herself.
“M-m-m-ma’am?” I stuttered, looking down at the ground again. “W-why would ya’ come out here to see me, of all things? There’s plenty more better things to look at ‘round these parts, ‘cludin the hills… The Badlands, heck, even Dodge City…” My heart was beating so fast, I tell ya, that I’m still surprised she didn’t remark on it even once.
“I see all the subjects my sister does not during the day, Brocky. It was Brocky, correct?” she asked. I quickly nodded in turn. “Excellent, I am not so bad at my duties as she suggests sometimes. Everyone needs a hoof in a time of need, whether it be my sister, or myself. Perhaps this will help before I depart.” She dipped her horn toward my head, and it began to glow with a right pretty fog like aura, spreading out over my head. When it finally reached my head, a million pictures raced through, even more than when I was wondering where I was, Journal! The one that stuck out the most was when I saw Mama, Papa, my sisters, getting all excited and happy for me, throwing me a party, and I saw me… With a cutie mark! I couldn’t quite make out what it was; it was like when you throw a rock under clear water, and it looks somewhat glossy. The type of glossy where you can see it, but it’s muddled out and fuzzy, so it’s distorted. It was like that, but I couldn’t see exactly what it was.
“Woah…” I whispered, looking around as she pulled her horn from me, and looked up at the sky, where the Princess was as well. “What was that?”
“That was what could be, or might not be. You just have to make the right choices, my loyal subject. Follow your pursuits, and it will be the way to your mark,” Luna said to me with a dip of her eyes. She smiled at me, before I saw the dawn coming up over the horizon. “Princess Celestia will be wondering about where I am, so I must be off. Make your decisions wisely, Brocky.”
When she flew off, I woke up in my bed with a slight gasp, as the sun was rising. I hopped out of the bed, staring out over at the sun rise, and I’d already made my first decision on her advice.
I was going to leave the farm.
