As she sat across from her crush, Rarity was doing everything in her power to not jump up in glee! She never would have believed that Pinkie’s strange plan would bear fruit. She smiled as she noticed that Applejack had kept her warming smile, waiting for her questions. “Well I guess the first thing I want to ask is... do you do anything in your spare time except hang with me and the girls?”
Applejack let out a small chuckle.“Well of course I do. I bet you wouldn't know it, but ah like to read every once and awhile.” She replies. Rarity raised a brow, since she had never pictured Applejack being a reader. “Now don't go thinking I’m a egghead like Twi, I just enjoy a good story as a way to relax.”
Rarity let out her own laugh, the sound escaping her lips. “I would never have accused you of being one... I’m guessing you enjoy adventure books like Daring Do?” Applejack let out a hearty laugh, causing Rarity to lean back in a tiny amount of awe. “ Did I say something funny, dear?”
Applejack tried to compose herself but for some reason couldn't stop laughing. Finally she steadied herself and responded. “Good Celestia no, could you imagine how hard it would be to get Rainbow Dash out of my hair? She would always be on my farm talking about the new book and what not. Nah, sugarcube I prefer to have some mystery rather than them, it's sometimes fun to try and figure out the ending before you get there, you know?”
Rarity let a small smile grace her lips. “Well, I would have never guessed that.” She stopped to think of a new question, but the only one that came to her mind may cause her friend some distress. Bucking up she asked. “I know this may be a personal question dear, but is the hat ontop of your head your father’s?”
A tiny sliver of sorrow shone on Applejack’s face, but it quickly disappeared as if it was never there. “It's fine to ask that, heck I am sorta surprised no one else has ask that before. The answer to your question is no. It belong to my ma, you see she was the farmer in the family,” Applejack paused to stare up into the sky, letting a small smile grace her lips. “You know it's all in the genes Rares, my ma was a farmer and it made me a farmer. Just like ah'm sure your mom had something to do with your dress making?” She beamed at her friend only to drop her smile at the sight of distress upon Rarity’s face, but before she could ask what was wrong, Rarity spoke first.
“Sorry Applejack, I know I get a little over dramatic sometimes, but do you have time for a personal story of mine?” Applejack just smiled before nodding her head in approval, bringing a small smile to Rarity’s face. “ Well when you brought up my mother it brought up some old memories about my past with her,” As she spoke each word her face continued to drop in sorrow.
Seeing this fact Applejack quickly interfered. You don't have to talk about if you don't wanna, but if you do I will listen all the same, sugarcube” Rarity choked back a sob before smiling at her friends kindness, always wanting to help others and not cause them pain, another one of the many reasons she started to like her.
“No dear I can't really place it, but I feel as if I have needed to say this for a while, and you somehow just make me want to be honest,” Applejack let a small blush appear as she listened. “Well, a lot of you don't know this but my mother used to be a broadway pony, She used to be a headliner in canterlot, always saying she would have been a star” She paused, looking at nothing in particular before letting a small tear fall.
But she fell in love with a traveling salespony, and then out of nowhere she became pregnant! This caused her to stay at home and lose her headliner. And when I was born she started to take up drinking.” Tears fell freely down her face as she tried to speak, so enthralled with her story she never noticed a certain orange mare move toward her.
She choked out another sob as she spoke. “ Sometimes when my father wasn't home she would yell at me, most of the ti..time it was the same saying, I..I ruined her life it was all my fault that she lost her sh..sho…” Rarity let a small gasp leave her lips as she felt herself be pulled into a warm embrace.
Running her hooves into the shivering mare's coat, Applejack whispered “ It's okay sugar, let it all out, I’m not going anywhere.” Without hesitation Rarity buried her face into her warm chest, and wailed to her heart's content. Applejack just sat there in silence, letting her friend let it all out. Yes, Rarity could be a drama queen but Applejack knew that these were real tears and would not leave her.
Finally after what seemed like hours, Rarity started to calm down and slowly lifted her head to gaze at her knight. Did I just think of her as my knight? She stopped thinking as she noticed the grim look on Applejacks face, before she could ask her spoke. “ I hate to ask this sugar, but does she still do this to Sweetie Belle?”
Rarity just shook her head and smiled. “No. I believe she got it out of her system around the time I got my cutie mark.” She replies. She slowly pulled herself from her friends embrace, not really wanting to let go. Applejack let out a small chuckle before looking at the placement of the sun.
“Well would ya look at that, It's mid afternoon,” Rarity let a small look of displeasure slip through her face, but was pulled by Applejack's voice. “Well I didn't really getta answer a lot of your questions... oh I know! Why don't you stay for dinner and then we can keep chatting? If you want to we could even have a slumber party?” Rarity let a smile grace her lips.
“I would love to darling, but first? Can I get a shower? I am covered in dirt and sweat” Applejack let out another hearty laugh.
“Well of course sugarcube, Granny would tan my hide if I didn't get cleaned up before supper. Same goes for you as well” Rarity let another blush dawn as she chuckled, excited to spend more time with her fair knight.
Now she found herself alone in Applejack’s room, dinner had been nice and quiet, attended by only her, Applejack, and a currently sleeping Granny Smith. Applejack was downstairs cleaning up the kitchen. She had offered to help, only for her request to be refused, simply because she was a guest. So now she had all the time in the world to inspect the room around her.
The only problem was there wasn't much to take in. Applejack’s room was small and simple. There was just one bed, a dresser and night stand. It was just like her: simple and pure. She let out a small chuckle as she noticed the pictures on the wall near the window. Letting her curiosity get the best of her, she walked over to the wall and started to take in the many memories that were placed upon the wall.
Tap..tap..tap. Rarity nearly jumped out of her fur when she turned to the sound of tapping on Applejack’s window. Outside floated a smiling Pinkie Pie who seemed to be lifted by a bunch of balloons strapped to her body. Sighing, Rarity lifted the window open to hear what her friend had to say.
As soon as the window started to open, the sound of Pinkie’s voice pierced through the silence. “See, I told you getting down and dirty would help! Now you are already up in her bedroom, you naughty pony you.” Rarity’s face was now aflame in crimson, cheeks could be mistaken for Big Mac’s own fur.
“Pinkie Pie! It is nothing like that, She just suggested I stay the night so that we could get acquainted!” Pinkie could do nothing but let out a small laughter.
“Well duh. I’m just messing with you Rares, I just came by to make sure everything was going according to plan. And it is, so I am going to get out of your mane, but you have to tell me everything later, kay?” Rarity went to respond only to notice that Pinkie had already floated away.
Shaking her head at her friends antics, she turned back to wall in front of her. She tilted her head in question before the thought graced her lips. “Why isn't there any pictures of her father?”
