"Hello there.  Actually, it's kind of weird to refer to you as a location.  My name is Copper Wire, what's yours?"  I said trying to counteract my sociopathic tendencies.

She responded "Pomegranate...  Are you okay?

"Yes, I'm doing well" I say looking nervous.

"It's just... You look exhausted..."  She replied timidly.

Another filly walked up and said "Hey Granate, come on."

"Oh, sorry, I can't talk, my friends are waiting."  She gave a nod to her friend and said "I'm coming." She turned to me and said "Goodbye."

"Well, it was worth a shot."  I thought to myself.  "It's time to go home now...  My failure is all encompassing"  I head home from school filled with disappointment and dread.

As I walk up, I see that Crystal is home already.  "I'm home."

"Hi Copper."  Says my 12 year old sister Crystal.

"Hello..."  I say as a quickly make my way to my room.

I just get in bed to hide for a while.  But eventually, as I always knew would happen, my mother got home.  I trebled at the thought that she could come calling at any second.  But then I heard the stove start.  She went straight to making dinner.  I breath a sigh of relief because I have more time to think about how I'm going to explain this to mom.  I rack my brain for any way to make it less painful for her to hear.  If I don't tell her now, she'll just hear it from the teachers.

"It's time for dinner."  I heard my sister shout.

My time is up.  I take a deep breath and slowly walk to the door.  I reach it and stand frozen with my hoof on the door knob.

I hear my sister say "Hurry up Copper."

I push the door open and walk to the dinner table.

They're already sitting there.  I quietly take my seat.

"How was your day son?"  My mother asks in the same sweet motherly voice that she always uses.

"It was alright."  I reply pensively.

"I heard that you got your report card today.  I trust that everything went well."  She said calmly taking a sip of water.

"I - I have it right here."  I say pushing it towards her.

"There's no going back now..." I think to myself as I feel my heart sink.

She reads it off "Physical Education, A+.  Language, A+.  Science, A+.  Art, A+.  Math...  C...  Is this some kind of mistake on the schools part?"

"No, that is the correct grade..."  I say avoiding her gaze.

There is a moment of silence, until my sister breaks it with "Are you stupid or something?"

"No, I just..." I weakly try to object.

"You just what dear?"  My mother said keeping up her voice.

"I only passed the placement test because I studied really hard to get into the class below this one, so I studied some of the material for the next class to get a higher score.  I didn't expect to make it in.  I wasn't ready for that class.  I told you before, but you didn't listen."  I try to explain.

"Well, I guess you couldn't handle it.  I'm very disappointed in you son."  She said somehow maintaining that sickly sweet voice.

My sister breaks into a giggle.

"What was I supposed to do?"  I ask with slight frustration.

"Adapt.    You are 14 years old with the best grades that Trottingham Middle School has ever seen.  You just must have not tried."

My frustration grew and I said "You think that I didn't try!?  I did nothing but study for the past few months."  I say sinking down in despair.

"I went to the teachers but they couldn't help.  How was I supposed to adapt?"  The more I think about it, the more frustrated I get.

"You spent all of your time on school work?  You can't function in this society without friends.  I see that school is not the only thing you're failing at.  I don't know what I'm going to do with you" her voice getting more cruel.

I start shouting "I tried so hard!  I couldn't do anything else!"

She seemed taken aback by my outburst and started breathing heavily.

My sister jumps in.  "Copper, stop!  You know about mom's heart."

Something snapped in me "You're still keeping that up after everything that's happened?  Mom, you..."  I pause remembering what will happen if she finds out I know.

My mother's gaze snaps to me.

It doesn't matter anymore, I can never go back to this.  "I know what happened three years ago, the night before Dad left.  I know that you lied about your "condition"."

"What?"  She exclaims.

"You told everyone that you had a terminal heart disease.  Dad didn't care, he loved you so much.  He worked on his inventions so hard to pay your medical bills.  But you were really splitting the money with your doctor.  Your "visits" were when you used the money to party.  Dad found out and confronted you one night.  That was the only time that I had ever heard you scream, so I jumped out of bed and ran to see if you were okay.  I came to the door and heard the whole story.  When you knew that you couldn't live like that anymore, you made up lies about him and divorced him.  Everyone believed you and I don't even know what happened to him."

Mom burst into tears.  "Why would you say such horrible things?  I just wanted to help you.  Your father did things that you can't even understand yet.  I didn't lie about that.  I love you son."

"Quit acting like you care!"  I shout at her.

Crystal looks at me with tears in her eyes and says "Why're you doing this?  Do you want to make her have a heart attack!?"

I start laughing "Dad didn't have enough evidence and I don't have any.  Everyone's going to think I'm crazy anyway, so there's no point staying here anymore.  I don't know how, but I will prove what you did.  Crystal, I'm sorry I never told you before.

Crystal responds "I don't believe you at all!  You're just being a selfish monster!"

"Well, goodbye then Crystal."  I turn to mom "I don't care what you say.  I will never give up.  You can't fool everyone all the time, and your time coming near."

I burst open the door and disappeared into the night.
