The Equestrian Legendarium
Blinding light and suffocating darkness.
That is how life began.
In the beginning there was naught but a large blank expanse called Chaos. Only it existed, but from it everything came into being. To the north of this great expanse was the realm of Nightshade. So black and dark was it, that nothing could be seen. A great suffocating fog blanketed the land; shrouding it in eternal night. Here lived a stallion with a dark blue mane and black fur. His name was Night. To the south was the realm of Dawnsun. It is filled with a blinding piercing light, and its landscape is covered with fire and smoke. From this, a mare whose mane shone like fire and whose body glittered like snow was formed. Her name was Day. Together, they brought the gods into this world and filled Chaos with life. Yet it is also they who shall arise at the end, to render the earth asunder and consume everything.
The two crossed the expanse, he bringing the never ending dark, and she; the burning light. They both met at the middle, and from their coupling came their three children. First was mighty Galaxia, Ruler of the Stars. Whose body filled the entirety of Chaos and fashioned the universe from her body. Next came Equis, an earth pony whose body became the very ground we stand upon. But the final child was tainted. Her father’s darkness outweighed her mother’s light within her soul, and thus she was born malformed, with the head of a pony, the body of a lion, and a snake for a tail. Thus she was named Lilith, the first chimera and Mother of Monsters.
Her family trembled in disgust at her appearance and thus she was sent away to Tartarus, the prison void which lay within the realm of Equis. There Lilith spawned two children from her own bodily fluids, the gods of chaos Discord and Eris. Both were malformed like their mother, yet took on a different bodily appearance. Both had a pony head, yet their bodies were comprised of parts from many other creatures. Therefore they were called Draconequus. These three conspired from their prison to overthrow their grandparents along with their aunt and uncle.
Together, Equis and Galaxia had several children. These children became the ancestors to the three pony tribes. First the Earth Ponies were formed from the body and sweat of Equis. They were gifted with the strength of the earth. The Pegasi were formed from a feather that fell from Galaxia’s wing. They were gifted with the power of flight. Last were the Unicorns, who were created when Galaxia accidentally knocked a star to the ground. The star broke and from the fragments the first unicorns were born. They were given a single horn each with which to control magic.
Together the three tribes co-existed upon Equis. Yet, Galaxia looked upon her children and said, “Is it not well and good that my little ponies live together in harmony? Yet would it not be also good for them to have others to befriend and to share this world with?” So Galaxia created the other non-pony races as well. The griffons, dragons and many others were created by her, and they lived with the three pony races gladly and in harmony.
Galaxia and Equis had two other children soon after, a mare and a colt. The mare had the appearance of fire and shone greatly, and the colt shone as well, yet not as greatly nor as brightly as his sister. She was called Sun; and he Moon. Together, they rule the skies and circle the planet, bringing both night and day; light and dark to the world. The beads of sweat that dripped from their manes created the first stars.
Yet it was prophesied that at the end of time, the great black wolf Fenrir will swallow whole both Sun and Moon, thus placing the world into eternal night. This is said to be the first sign of the ending. For now, he is content with forever chasing both siblings, knowing that he will eventually catch up and devour them both.
And it came to pass that the three pony tribes went off and divided the earth between them; each taking an area of the land and developing it as they saw fit for their respective tribe. The earth ponies, with their great strength carved out great canyons and valleys, which they cultivated with their knowledge of plants to transform them into lush, green paradises.
The unicorns, with their magical prowess and skill, raised great mounds of earth and stone. These became the mountains of Equis, and it was here that they established their communities. Together, they pooled their knowledge of magic and became the first lore-masters. They shared their lands and knowledge with the griffons, and both races lived together in peace and established trade.
The Pegasi took to the skies, declaring their intention to build a great city in the clouds, far from prying pony eyes. For even in those days, they were a proud and secretive race. Together, they created a majestic floating city named Nimbus. Though many other cloud cities followed in the years to come, none came close to the majesty of Nimbus, which quickly became known as the Gem of Equis. It was said among the other pony tribes that to look upon Nimbus and see its legendary beauty was itself a blessing from the Great Mother Galaxia.
And so it was; that all lived together in harmony without the need to establish dominance over his neighbour. Though this peace was never meant to last and was fated to fade soon. For though they were locked away in Tartarus, Lilith and her children were already plotting and sowing seeds of jealousy and discontent among not just the pony tribes, but the other races as well. Yet this was in accordance with the fate of the world. As it was, so it shall be and is and will be.
