Chpt. 1: Burning Down the House
Not many ponies really care all that much about Los Pegasus. Usually when you think of an interesting location in the land of Equestria, the usual spots are Ponyville, Canterlot, or maybe even Manehattan. Hell, I think Phillydelphia has something going on with some parasprites but who knows for sure. Yet, Los Pegasus was just there, and in a way I’m kinda glad. I’m not really all that interested in seeing my home town demolished by wild Ursa or rampaging dragons. It’s not much, but its home.
Even now as I sit on the park bench, enjoying this nice summer breeze from the ocean, I can’t help but enjoy the nice quiet this city gave me. However, there was one issue that always arose in the summer; fires. I have no idea what these buildings are made of, but I swear something in them is some sort of super flammable. Whether its electrical fires or it is literally so hot a building can combust, every day in the summer seemed to always bring out a fire that threatens to burn down an entire city block.
Looking out into the distance, I could see smoke rising up from the into the clouds. The sound of the fire department wasn’t all that far off. The stallions and mares in red had their work cut out for them as this was their busiest time of year. Letting out a sigh, I start to think about what it would mean if- “OH SHIT, THAT’S MY APARTMENT!!!” I couldn’t help but shout and scaring the crap out of a few ponies close by. But I couldn’t help it, realization had hit me and I took off running. My hands pushed me off of the metal bench and my hooves did the rest. My long legs dug into the ground as I took off running for my home. Speeding past taxis and narrowly dodging the Saturday crowds.
As much as I envied pegasi right about now, my legs and stamina were enough to carry me all the way to the apartment complex now ablaze. The block was sealed, the fire ponies doing everything they could to keep the fires under control and from spreading to the other buildings. Even from afar, I could feel the heat singe away at my eyebrows.
The fire had spread to most of the ground floor, and was now taking spreading to the sixth; my floor. “Dammit!” I grumbled under my breath. With nothing else to do, I would sit back and pray that the fire ponies would get things under control before the fire consumed all of my stuff. Really starting to wish I worked outside of the home.
However, as I looked at my home go up in smoke, I could see something one story above mine. I could see the silhouette of a pony waving away and trying to catch their attention. “Hey, hey! Some pony’s still in there!” I shouted, trying to get their attention. They couldn’t hear me over the sound of the rushing hose. “Hey! Some-“ The window where I saw the pony had burst into flames. At that moment, all common sense was thrown out as I made a really foolish decision.
While no pony was looking, I slipped to the side of the building. Even there, I could feel the heat radiating through the solid brick and concrete. This was not going to end well for me, I could already feel it in my bones.
Running over to a side door, I tried giving it a jostle to see if it was open. It wasn’t. “Fuck. The one time this damn this is locked.” Making sure I was alone, I decided to use a special skeleton key. Balling my fist, I drove it through the metal door, sending it flying off of the hinges. I may not have magic or wings, but there were definitely benefits to being an earth pony.
With my way in I began hiking up the stairs, trying not to breath in too much smoke. My shirt could act as a guard for the moment but the thickness of it definitely made me feel woozy. Still, some pony was in trouble and I couldn’t knowingly let them burn to death. There had been a few death’s at the hands of wildfires already, I didn’t want to let there be more. Damn my moral compass.
Soon enough, I managed to reach the seventh floor. I kicked the door in and could already see smoke seeping through the cracks of the doors. I needed to work fast. Remembering where it was I saw the pony, I found her door and did to it what I did to every other door I came across today, shattering it into pieces with a punch. My face was covered by my shirt but the amount of smoke that hit me in the face was far more intense than I thought. Coughing and gagging, I wafted the smoke and stayed low. “Hello?! Is anypony in here?!” I called out.
“Help!” I heard a faint and strained voice. Turning to where I heard it, I saw a cowering young filly in her PJs in the corner. She let out a few coughs as she tried to stay awake.
“Don’t worry, I’m gonna get you out of here!” I wasted no time picking the filly up and holding her with one hand. I needed a free one if we were going to make it out at all. I held her close to me, and turned to the door. I barely took one step before the floor gave out under us and we went tumbling down. I cushioned the blow for her as best I could but the fall had somewhat disoriented me. Not only that, but we were in a floor that was engulfed in fire. To make things worse, I recognized it as my room. Everything I owned was ablaze, contributing to the fire. Movie posters, my couch, my bed, and the pile of paper I used for work had been used to feed the flames. Groaning in pain, I picked myself and the filly up off the ground. I had taken in too much smoke and was already starting to feel light headed.
I soon heard something rocking and whistling. Turning around, I saw the gas heater starting to shake violently. “Oh… you gotta be kidding me.” I held the filly close and bolted through the walls. I didn’t even need my strength as it practically crumbled on its own. However, this just seemed to lead us to more trouble as the room burst into flames. I could hear the crowd panic outside. No pony knew we were in here, and I was starting to regret just high tailing it into a burning building for just one kid. I wasn’t just risking her life, but my own as well. As much as I would like to chide my own stupidity, I had more important things to worry about.
The gas heater finally gave out in a spectacular display of heat and force. My room was decimated as well as a few that were caught in the radius. Unfortunately, we were in that radius. I turned my back to the oncoming explosion, shielding the young filly from harm. I fully expected my back to become that stuff griffons called ‘charred steak’. Yet, it never came. I could still feel heat but no more than usual. Curiously, I see the fires spreading around some sort of invisible wall. In my state of awe, I hear somepony grunt.
“W-What the hell are you doing here?!” I turned to see a mare in a fire suit, holding out her hands as her blue horn flared up with magic. She looked to be struggling to keep the flames from spreading far enough for it to engulf us. “G-Get the fuck out! Don’t just stand there, move!” She didn’t need to tell me twice. I picked the filly up and started running for the stairs, but as I do, I turn back to see the mare one last time. She let out a soft cry as she managed to force the flames in the opposite direction. She didn’t know it, but I was thankful for the save.
Not wasting another second on that floor, I ran for the stairs and made my way to the exit. Just in time as well, the floor behind me had given out and started to collapse. I couldn’t help but think of that mare that helped me as I ran down the stairs. I could only hope that she was okay.
I got myself and the filly out of the apartment complex as fast as possible. Free from the smoke, I began to take deep breaths of clean air. I never knew how sweet oxygen was before nearly suffocating. I could see the young filly felt the same way as she gladly took in as much oxygen as her little lungs would allow. Once I had enough strength back, I took the filly to the paramedics so she could get proper treatment. I was no medic, but I was pretty sure that we may have mild lung damage at worst.
I watched the paramedics take the filly to get some proper treatment; just in time for a terrified mother to come and make sure her foal was alright. I couldn’t help but feel a bit of pride in what I had done. It was stupid, even life threatening, but seeing the mare hold her filly close with tears streaming down her eyes was something I wouldn’t forget. Though, it would trigger a few emotions I’d rather it not, it was a happy sight to behold.

After getting a check up from the medic, I cleaned myself off at the beach. If it weren’t for the nudity policy, I would be out walking the streets covered in suit. I was just thankful that no pony else was around to see me washing up. Still, the bar that was used to hide the lower half of me was a bit difficult, forcing me to squat down. Sometimes it sucked to be tall, but I would live with it.
The soot washed off of me in a stream of inky blackness, giving way to my soft cream colored coat. My mane and tail were still left a thick, shaggy black mess it always was. Drying myself off and putting my favorite, now dirtied jeans, and ruined white shirt on with glasses, I was in dire need of something to cheer me up. My home was gone, the only clothes I had were on my back, and for all I knew everything I owned was destroyed. If by some miracle my work was still there, I think it would be an easy road back to recovery.
To ditch this dull mood, I went to one of the two places in Los Pegasus that made me happy. As much as I would love to see a movie right about now, I would need to keep to some more cheaper options. As such; I’d be taking a walk to the comic book store to most likely start my collection all over again.
Just seeing the store’s logo brought me some sense of relief. Ink Stink was run by a Pegasus mare. I never got her real name, but everypony just calls her Streaky. It was odd, but I was never brave enough to ask why ponies called her that. As usual, I’d see the bright white Pegasus mare with a golden mane, reading away at the newest issue of whatever comic had caught her eye. This time, it was “Fillisecond #280”. The desk was on the other end of the room, and still I could see the small text clear as day. I was thankful my sight wasn’t damaged in the fire, I’d be out of a job.
The bell let out its little jingle and Streaky looked up at me with her usual stoic expression. “Hey. What happened to you?”
“My apartment burned down. Came here to relax.”
“Mmm.” To others, she sounded as if she let out a groan of false interest, but I saw enough in her body language that showed genuine concern. Streaky wasn’t the most expressive verbally, but my eyes told me everything that I needed. From the uncomfortable shift, the tension in her back, and the small flutter of her wings, I could see that she was genuinely concerned.
“I’m gonna take a look around, okay Streaky?”
“Whatever. Just don’t smudge the print.” She failed to look up from her book as I walked off. Underneath that hard expression was a really nice mare. She was the closest thing to a friend I had, and though we didn’t talk much, I still felt we had somewhat of a relationship. I would have asked her out a long time ago, if it weren’t for the fact that I see the way she looks at mares. Besides, friends were enough for me.
Browsing the OC comics section of the store, I would see if I could find the issue of Fillisecond Streaky was reading. The tagline had caught my interest. “Millisecond races for the ponies she loves, but will she be fast enough?” They were nearing issue three hundred, so I knew they were planning to set up something big.
Looking over the racks, I finally find the last issue and make a grab for it. Taking hold of it, I soon find a deep blue hand taking hold of the other side of the book. I follow the arm to face the pony, and see it to be a young mare. She was a unicorn with a deep blue coat and a neon blue mane with black edges. Her green eyes turned to me, but I was a bit preoccupied at deducing what was with the stripes along her face.
Though I wasn’t the best at biology, I would think the stripes were due to some zebra being present in her. “Oh, sorry. I didn’t see you there.” Her voice was soft, but it sounded so familiar to me. I took hold of the book and presented it to her.
“Here, I can wait to read it.” I saw her eyes light up as she took the book, looking at the cover.
“Thanks. I don’t meet a lot of ponies who like Fillisecond. They just think she just runs fast.”
“I know. There’s a lot more to it than that. Plus, she’s actually pretty funny and tragic.”
“Right! Most ponies just look at the powers and judge them on that alone.” I let out a chuckle.
“Indeed. Still, ponies can read what they want.” She places the book under her armpit. I couldn’t help but notice her bright yellow tank top with the image of Mistress Marevelous in a triumphant pose and her lasso in hand. “I see you’re a fan of the Power Ponies.”
“Oh yeah. Been into comics for a long time. Can’t love comics without loving the best super team in the world.”
“Same here.” She gives me a soft smile.
“Do you… wanna read it with me?” I couldn’t help but fluster and nod. “Awesome.” She quickly finds a table but we never got to open the book. “So, what’s your name?”
“Demo Reel. What about you?” She starts to fluster.
“Promise you won’t laugh?” I look to her a little confused but I ultimately give her a nod. “I-It’s uh… Firestorm.” She waits for me to burst into laughter, but I never do. Instead, I smile in a friendly manner.
“Awesome. You mean like the hero?” She looks to me in amazement and embarrassment.
“Y-Yeah. I know, it’s weird. But I swear! My mom and dad didn’t know the character existed at the time. Not a lot of ponies were interested in a dragon that sent ponies back to Tartarus.”
“It’s cool. I understand. Still, it’s pretty cool. Firestorm is a badass.”
“Oh Celestia, I know! Did you read last month’s issue?! That ending was the stuff dreams were made of!” I couldn’t help but smile from her fan-mare moment.
“I didn’t. I just got the issue last night.” I suddenly sigh. “Though… I don’t think I’ll be able to read it.”
“What?! But… that issue was an instant classic! Drama, romance, suspense! It was a comic book event where no one died for once! Do you know how rare that is?!” Ignoring the plot details aside, I did.
“Y-Yeah. I had the other four issues to the story and loved every one of them from cover to cover. But…” I sighed again. “My house burned down.” I heard her gasp.
“Oh. I’m sorry. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. I wasn’t around when the fire broke out. Though, my collection is probably firewood at this moment.”
“Oh. That’s awful. Where did you live?”
“Sunset Celestia Apartments.” The store went quiet. The fact she didn’t respond got my attention as she suddenly looked at me in utter shock and amazement. “… What?”
“You…” She sounded like she was in utter shock, slowly pointing a finger to my nose. “Y-You were…”
“I was what?” She suddenly looked at me like a mother would when their child did something stupid.
“You were that stallion in the building! The one with the filly!” My eyes went wide, realizing who I was sitting with.
“Wait… are you that mare who saved my life in the building?”
“I knew it. You are that pony.” I shushed her, wanting to keep that down. “Sweet Celestia, what the hell were you thinking? You could have gotten yourself killed.”
“I know. It was stupid of me to do that, but I saw the filly on the seventh floor with no pony reacting. I thought no pony could see her.” She let out a sigh of frustration.
“It’s… understandable I guess.” I noticed a reluctant sigh. “The fire department has been kinda overwhelmed. Los Pegasus has the highest reported fires in the entire country. It keeps food on the table, but it’s really dangerous.” She sighed once more. “Still, that’s no reason to just run in and play hero. You could have been seriously hurt.” I opened my mouth to speak, but couldn’t find anything to say I already hadn’t before.
“Yeah. I know.” Things go quiet as I feel a thick awkwardness come over. “Thanks.” I say out of the blue. She looks to me with a curious look. “For saving me and the filly, I owe you my life. So thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Things go quiet again. Besides the chiding, I liked to talk to this mare. I admit, she was pretty cute, finding a mare to bond over comics was a trial and a half. Though, I felt I did owe this mare for what she did for me, even if it was just her job.
“Hey, Firestorm,” I caught her attention once again. “Can I… offer you dinner? You saved my life today and I want to make it up to you.” She raised a brow at me, a faint redness appearing on her cheeks. Ultimately, I did get that smile back from her.
“Is that how you pick up mares; throw yourself into danger?”
“No. I-I wasn’t asking you out, I was just wanting to repay the favor.” I saw her eyes dart up and down; a strange sensation came over me. I suddenly felt the awkwardness surround me instead of the both of us.
“Alright. If ya wanna make it up to me, you can start by buying this comic for me.” She held up the issue of Millisecond. I gave her a smile as I towered over her.
“Alright, suppose I can do that.” The two of us walked up to Streaky and I paid the money I owed her. With that done, we went out to the city to start my payment for her saving my life.

The sun was setting upon the city, gracing the sky with hues of orange and purple. Firestorm and I would walk the streets until she found something she wanted to do. Surprisingly, we had quite a bit in common. We were both big nerds to the core and we would discuss on end of all the various things we liked, even if we came to a few disagreements.
We were both comic book geeks, and she even liked her fair share of my favorite films. As much as I would like to take her to the movies, my budget wouldn’t allow it. Instead, Firestorm took me around the city until five o’clock rolled around and we came to a pub. It wasn’t my first place to eat, but if she liked it, I was game.
We walked in and found ourselves a booth to sit in. “So, Demo. What is it that you do?”
“I watch movies.”
“I was talking about what you do for a living.”
“That’s what I do. I work for the newspaper, and I send in reviews for films. In return, they send me money as payment and to see films. Though, I gotta pay for snacks out of pocket. Popcorn is a major part of my diet.” We share a laugh together as a waitress brought us a menu for drinks and food.
“I see, that sounds like fun.”
“It did, but there is a lot of awful films out there. Remember that Copper Hoof film they came out with?”
“That movie was like being force fed vomit.”
“Yeah. I had to sit through every minute of that film. By the time it was over, I was the only one left.”
“Oh yeah. I once had to stop a fire from consuming a supermarket filled with panicking ponies.”
“Okay, I guess what I go through doesn’t really compare to what you do. You risk your physical health each day, I risk my mental health.” I managed to get a laugh out of her, to lighten the mood. I don’t know why, but I loved to hear the mare laugh. I look over my menu for something to drink. I wasn’t much of an alcohol pony, but I would drink when the occasion called for it. “So, you know my job and my comic preferences. What else do you wanna know?”
She gave me a devious smirk, making me feel a bit uncomfortable. “I do have questions, but I’m too sober to ask them.” The waitress came back and we placed our orders. We both started things out with a simple cider. I also ordered some French fries for the fun of it. “So, there’s been something that has been bugging me for a bit.”
“If it’s about the height, I’m 7’2”.”
“Um… no, but damn, that’s not what I wanted to know. When I went in, I saw you bust through that door in the apartment like it was nothing. I even found a steel door with a massive indent in it. Was that you?” I only nodded. “Holy shit, that’s amazing! You don’t have the muscle mass for it.”
“I know. I don’t know why, but I’ve always been strong. At age ten, I used to be able to push trees until they uprooted.” I could see a look of fear in her eyes. “It’s okay. I’ve learned how to control it.” I showed her by lifting up a complimentary shot glass, maneuvering it along my fingers and tapping it. “Speaking of amazing feats, I’ve never seen a unicorn use the kind of magic you do.” I saw her cheeks light up a bit.
“Well, I’ve always had an affinity for fire magic. Specifically suppressing open flames. When I was little, I burned myself and I was scared of fire ever since. I managed to overcome my phobia and soon enough, I got a job with the local fire department in my hometown.”
“Oh? So you’re not from around here then?”
“Nah. I was born in Trottingham. I actually just moved here today.”
“Heh, what a hell of a way to get to know your new home; already saved a shmuck from burning to death. Not the best way to say “welcome to Los Pegasus”.” I got another laugh out of her, I could see enjoyment in her eyes as she laughed away.
“Oh come on, Demo. It’s not all bad. Said shmuck is taking me out to dinner and I got a new comic out of it. I’d say today was pretty good first day in town.”
“Hm. Touché, ma’am.” Our drinks came and I took a sip of my drink, but in the corner of my eye, I saw her take a massive swig of cider. A bit of foam was left on her lips before being lapped up. “Thirsty?”
“Kinda. Been in the heat most of the day, I’m practically parched.” I gave her a small chuckle of amusement as the basket of fries comes our way. We both grab a fry and start to dig in. “So, anything to do in the city?”
“Dunno. I’m not much of a thrilling type. There’s basic stuff cities have; stores, malls, theaters. Though, if you’re a night pony, there are a few clubs around if you like that sort of deal.” She shook her head.
“Nah. I’m a day mare. Don’t have time to go clubbing. Gotta be ready at a moment’s notice to go to work, can’t be tired or else ponies get hurt.” I could understand that, she’d have to be well rested if things got bad.
“Well, what do you like?”
“I love comic books and basically everything that dwells within the Kingdom of geekiness.”
“Oh yeah? I think you and I are gonna get along nicely.” I take a few bites of my fries with ranch, then wash it down with more cider. I look back to Firestorm to see that she’s downed the last drop in her mug, before letting out a small belch of delight.
“I’m glad you think so. Cause here comes the alcohol questions.”
“Oh goodie. The best kind.” I take a few more fries as I await what kind of questions she would ask me next.
“Have you ever been out with a mare?”
“Does this count?” She thought about it for a sec and shrugged.
“Sure. I guess this counts.”
“Then yes I have been out with a mare; once in fact.” She looked at me with a strange look, as if I said something nonsensical. “What?”
“You’ve never been out with a mare before?”
“Nope. Don’t really know a lot of mares in my life. There’s Streaky from the comic store and my boss… buuuut, I doubt she’d be interested.”
“Why’s that?” I don’t answer her, not really wanting to tell her why I was all that terrified of my boss. She soon caught on and continued on with her questions, as well as order a second mug of cider. “Okay… So, that kinda got rid of a few of my questions. Okay, what about you? Got any questions you wanna ask me?”
“Hm. Okay, I was wondering about your stripes?”
“My dad was a zebra, mom was a unicorn. Next.” I let out a groan as I drink more of my cider. “What about you?” I almost choke as I hear her question.
“W-What?”
“Your family; what can you tell me? Got any brothers or sisters?”
“Uh… no, it’s just me. Look, Firestorm, I’d rather not talk about that.”
“Oh. Sorry.” Letting out a sigh, I look to my drink and guzzle the rest down. I was already starting to feel a little woozy. As I grab a few more fries, I start to think for a moment. “Okay, then. Can I share something with you?”
“Of course, I think we’ve made it to the friend zone.” She starts to fluster, tapping her second empty glass. I could see she was thinking up something.
“Well, if we are to become friends after this, then… I may as well tell ya something about me.” I was curious now, sitting back to listen to what she had to say. “I hope this doesn’t put you off, but… I wasn’t born a mare.” This day is weird.
“Oh. Okay then.” I could see she was worried, waiting with anticipation for me to react in some way.
“So…”
“So… what?”
“You’re not… grossed out about it?”
“No, it’s fine with me. I already like you, what’s between your legs.” She begins to turn bright red, I could see her restrain a gleeful smile.
“Thank you. You don’t know how much that means to me.”
“Think nothing of it. I care about whom you are, not what. You’re a pretty cool mare and I’m having a lot of fun, more so than I have in a long time.” Her smile was struggling to break out, making me smile. I took in the last of my cider before ordering a second. I usually didn’t go past one, but tonight… I was thinking I could do something a little different.
“So, where are you going to stay tonight?”
“Meh, think I’ll go find a hotel. Crash there before I find somewhere else to live. If worst comes to worst, I’ll probably have to leave town.” I heard Firestorm choke on her drink as I said that. Looking up at me with shocked eyes.
“W-What?! You can’t do that!”
“Why not?”
“Because…” She starts to turn red again. “I just met you. You’re the only friend I’ve got, and… I really like you.” It was my turn to start fluster.
“I uh… really like you too, Firestorm.” I see her hand land on mine softly. Upon contact, I started to feel a new sensation start to flow over me. I didn’t know what it was, but I really liked it. I think… I also liked her as well. We stayed and talked for a bit more. We ordered more drinks and without warning, and in a drunken slur, Firestorm offers me this.
“Y-You know what? D-Demo, you’re a cool guy.” I was a little tipsy myself, but I was no better than her. “You’re sweet, funny, and you’re not put off by the fact I used to have a dick.” I may be drunk, but I knew what was eloquent in speech, and she was oozing with it. “So, I wanna cut you a break. Since you gave me a good time, I want… I-I want to give you a place to crash. You can come stay at my apartment until you get back up on your hooves.”
I waved her off. “N-No no. I can’t do that. I don’t want to be any schruble.” She lets out a giggle.
“Don’t worry. It’d be nice. Trust me. I want to make ya feel better.” A few red flags were going off in my head at the moment, but I wrote them off as drunken tingles. With a smile, I pay for our drinks and offer her a hand to stand up. “Shanks.” We stand up and start to stumble our way to her place. She kept giggling to herself about something, but I just thought it was about something inconsequential.

We found her apartment, or at the very least an apartment that looked like hers. Firestorm had a spell in her arsenal that dulled the alcohol in our system and managed to regain some of our cognitive thinking. There’d still be a hangover, but I didn’t care. I was having the time of my life with her.
We helped one another up the stairs to her floor and found her room. She reached into her pocket and unlocked it with a key. Thankfully, this was the right door and we walked in for some much needed rest. I was so glad to see a bed, I nearly wept with delight. However, those tears were put on hold as soon as I felt Firestorm take hold of my shirt collar and bring me in for a hungry kiss. Time seemed to slow down for me, but I ultimately leaned into it, feeling fireworks go off in my head as I felt her take my first kiss. I didn’t know how long it was, but I was enjoying every second it happened. Sadly, she slowly pulled away from my lips.
I was left speechless, she was as well. We slowly made eye contact, and I could see a look of excitement fight with worry in her expression. “W-Wow.” It was all I could get out.
“I-I’m sorry. I shouldn’t-“ She was soon silenced as I leaned in for a second kiss. She was more than happy to lean back into me as we held each other close, not wanting to break away from one another. Yet, we still needed to breathe and thus we had to break apart a second time. She bit on my lip in a teasing manner, dragging it along as we parted.
My legs would tremble, I felt so weak and full of energy at the same time. I didn’t know what to make of it, and yet I didn’t really care. “That was… nice.” We smiled softly at one another. “So, where do we go from here? I’m not really sure what to do.”
“Well, I’m not really up for a lovey-dovey sort of relationship yet. But at the same time, I really do like you.” I felt the same way towards her. “You’re the first stallion I’ve met who isn’t bothered by what I am.”
“It’s alright. Just so long as you are yourself, I don’t really care.” Firestorm soon brought me in for a hug, holding me close as her face dug into my chest. The hug was a little foreign to me, but I still held her in return. It felt nice, holding her close to me like this. It was almost as good as the kiss.
“S-So uh… you said you wanted to be friends with benefits; what would these benefits entail exactly.” There was no response, at least a verbal one. I let out a soft gasp as something takes hold of my crotch. I let out a small moan of approval. She soon emerged from my tattered shirt and smiled up at me.
