Curse this stupid ice, curse this stupid road, and curse this stupid shortcut! Trixie couldn't take any more of it, which was unfortunate because there was nobody else on this lonely and cold dirt track to help her, and the ground was too rough and uneven for her to set up her traveling cart for a rest. The sun would be going down soon, and it would be getting even colder, but the prospects of the road ahead didn't look any better at all. Curse this wretched road!
So she plodded on, and on. Her feet ached terribly, despite being accustomed to travel and despite her good walking half-boots. Slipping and scraping on the frost-slick stones and bumps had really done a number on them. She was going to need a pedicure when she arrived at Baltimare, first thing.
This shortcut from Hoofington to Baltimare had turned out to be a terrible idea. Unfortunately, she had nobody but herself to blame. That old crone she'd met on the road had even warned her away from it.
When would she learn to listen?
She wasn't even saving any time, not really. This way was shorter, but she hadn't expected the road to be this bad. It would probably end up taking even longer to get to Baltimare this way. Silly Trixie, thinking she could save effort on dragging the stupid cart this way. I really should get a pony or something to haul it for me, and to hell with the laws against equine labor abuse.
Crusty ice crumbled under her boots, and she skidded sideways a little, only barely managing to catch herself on the mounds of snow on the side of the path before her cart started skidding too. Whew, close. The old snow creaked and crunched under the cart's wheels. Oh no. No no no no!
The path wasn't level. It canted far too much to the left at this point. Trixie glanced downward – it was an unbroken snowy slope, stretching beyond her sight into the wintry mists in the ravine below.
Another creak came from the cart. Distasteful as it was, she knew what she needed to do to save herself. She flicked the safety release on the cart's harness with a burst of magic from her fingertips, separating herself.
And she slid downward, skidding down the ice and snow. She hadn't been holding the cart up, the cart had been holding her up!
She flailed, desperate to stop her slide, but nothing was working. If only she'd learned that self-levitation spell! Digging her heels in didn't help – the snow was too soft, too slippery, and it gave way underneath her. The cold, wet snow pressed in under her skirt. As she slipped into the mists below, she could only hope to slow her fall enough to survive.
The cold cloud enveloped her, and now she was blind, hurling down the mountainside without being able to see more than a few feet ahead. She cringed and clenched, preparing to meet her doom.
The slope below her disappeared. There was no warning, she was just suddenly flying instead of skidding. She'd gone off a cliff ... she'd gone off a cliff and she couldn't even breathe. She knew what was coming, but she couldn't accept it. The sudden stop at the end would come any moment now ... and then it would be her end.
But the end didn't come. She fell and fell, the cold wind rushing past her, the cloud growing darker and darker, but still she fell.
Her stomach lurched as some force pressed her sharply upward. The feeling of acceleration was terrible, squeezing her down as if it wanted to crush her into a little ball.
Then again, it was far better than what she had expected. What's going on?
Soon, the rush of wind slowed. The feeling of something pressing upward on her eased. It all died down to an eerie dark calm, and she felt her feet gently touch the ground.
What? Really, what?
She shouldn't complain. Something just saved her life, after all, completely unexpectedly. But seriously, what?
Everything was dark around her, pitch black except for a slight green glow to her left. Maybe she was dead after all. Well, everybody always said to 'walk toward the light'. Why not give it a shot?
After blindly fumbling her way through a rock tunnel, she found the source of the light, a small green crystal. There was another one in the passage up ahead, almost as if they were marking the way. She followed, but with a growing sense of unease. This was starting to feel a little ... well, changelings used to be just fairy tales told to scare disobedient children. That had all changed after the royal wedding. Now everybody was on the lookout for them.
That she had been saved from a messy death in this hole was good. That it was starting to look like a changeling hole was less good.
She took a deep breath. There was only one thing to do, after all. And maybe this place was abandoned, or maybe she could sneak through to another entrance. Not likely, but possible ... worth a try.

“My Queen! My Queen!”
Chrysalis waved off the drone rushing toward her. “I know, I felt the spell myself. I'm on my way.” She didn't slacken her stride. This isn't just another false alarm this time, not just another drone who forgot his token crystal – none of them are outside right now. It might just be that this was her lucky day, the day she'd been waiting for. Had the pit trap they'd so carefully prepared finally caught one of the Ponykin for her?
She hurried along cramped dark passages in the labyrinth of tunnels until she came to the one she needed: the defensive corridor that ran right along the main entrance. It had been carved out specifically to aid in the defense against any intruders, following along the entrance tunnel and meeting it over and over again through tiny holes too small for a person to get through, but big enough to shoot magic through. If need be, this tunnel could be used to make the entrance a deathtrap.
But it was also excellent for spying.
Once she came to about the right spot, Chrysalis picked a hole and peered through it. This one offered an excellent view of a curve in the corridor, lit by several glow crystals. It was the perfect spot, and the intruder would be passing by here very soon, if the timing was right.
It took longer than Chrysalis expected for her guest to arrive. It was a Ponykin woman, a little short but well-built. She wore a heavy winter coat and tall, warm socks under a blue skirt that was surely far too short for the winter season above ground. The coat's zipper was open halfway down, and a generous triangle of cleavage showed through it.
Chrysalis licked her lips. Oh yes, she will do. She will do quite nicely.
The Ponykin woman stopped for a moment, looking at the cluster of glow crystals. She bent over, looking at them closer. She wasn't quite facing the right direction – if she had been, Chrysalis would have gotten a lovely view as the hem of the woman's coat pulled the back of her skirt up. From the viewpoint Chrysalis did have, though, she could see it ride up the girl's sumptuous legs until it just barely went high enough to show a bit of the girl's cutie mark.

Chrysalis set a leisurely pace back down the entry defense tunnel. Her quarry wasn't about to go darting ahead; she looked very much lost and confused. It would be easy enough to get to the junction of the two tunnels first and welcome her new very special guest.
The intruder must have hurried up a little, because Chrysalis only barely made it to the junction before her. Chrysalis did, however, have just barely enough time to pose herself, leaning against the tunnel wall near one of the light crystals provocatively, as if she'd been waiting there for hours for just the right person to come and make her theirs.
She froze in place the moment she saw Chrysalis, eyes going wide and her mouth flopping open. The intruder took a couple steps back, but then stopped.
She has nowhere to run, and she knows it. Chrysalis smiled at her, trying hard not to look too predatory.
“G-get back!” the Ponykin woman shouted, holding her hands out in front of her. It made her breasts press together quite nicely. “I'm... Trixie is a potent mage, and I'll defend myself! You changelings are always trying to kidnap Ponykin and replace them. Well you're not getting the Great and Powerful Trixie without a fight!”
Chrysalis didn't move from her place leaning against the tunnel wall. “Relax. The war is over.”
The woman did not relax. She kept her softly glowing hands up defensively, and she began to slowly back away.
“Trying to take over Equestria is too costly. I'm through with it.” Chrysalis' words stopped the woman's backward progress, but they didn't lower her guard. “My my, you are quite the skittish one, aren't you? I would expect more courage from such a 'great and powerful' mage.”
That earned her a vicious scowl.
“But you should not be afraid. You won't be kidnapped.” Chrysalis stretched luxuriantly, showing off her lithe figure to best advantage, hoping to catch the Ponykin's eye. “In fact, you are free to go at any time.”
Finally, Trixie relaxed a little.
“However, it takes quite a lot of magic to power the lift back to the surface, and we won't be able to send anyone up for at least three more days.”
With that little white lie, suspicion flooded back into Trixie's expression. She didn't seem quite as alarmed anymore, though, no longer ready to burst into an arcane fight at any moment.
Chrysalis was certain she could take this 'great and powerful' Trixie on, if need be. She could feel the woman's magical energies and sense that they were no match for her own. But that wasn't the plan, was it? She had a much different plan for how to conquer this Ponykin. “But perhaps your coming here was fortuitous.”
Trixie glared at her. “Fortuitous how, and who are you, anyway? You don't seem like a regular changeling.”
It's changeling nature to conceal oneself behind a mask, so Chrysalis had no problem hiding the twinge of jealous fury at not being recognized as Queen of the Changelings. “My name is Chrysalis, and I am the Queen.” She rose from the wall and took a step toward Trixie. “And your visit is fortuitous because I happen to be looking for a Ponykin woman like you. I want to create a peace accord with Equestria, and the path to smoothing out relations starts with a halfling brood.”
“But why would you need...” Trixie's eyes went wide again as she figured out the answer for herself. “You want me to be the brood's mother!”
“It is a wonderful opportunity.”
“It's disgusting!” Trixie shuddered, wiping away imaginary goo from herself with her hands. “You want me to... You think Trixie would stoop to having relations with a changeling and carrying a brood of little monsters inside her?”
Chrysalis shrugged. “Very well. I will respect your decision.” No I won't, my foxy little Ponykin. I will make you mine in three day's time. My little broodmare.

“Very well. I will respect your decision.”
Trixie stared at the changeling queen. The hell you will, Bug Queen. I can see it in your eyes that you haven't given up on it yet. Well, you're not getting me! She nodded, but kept a skeptical eye on the black-clad woman. “Good. Trixie will not be anyone's broodmother.”
“Please, follow me.” Queen Chrysalis turned and led the way down the tunnel, further into its dark recesses. “I am afraid that accommodations here are rudimentary at best...”
Trixie gave a little sigh. Still, it would probably be better than a freezing-cold cart on the side of the empty road.
Chrysalis turned her head back and gave Trixie an all-to-sly grin. “But you can stay in my suite, which is much better appointed. I'm sure you'll find it much more comfortable.”
“Ugh, fine.” Shaking her head, Trixie continued to follow the bug-woman. The Queen was up to no good, that was perfectly clear. As she followed her through the winding corridors, though, she couldn't help but look.
The Queen's clothing had an odd, moth-eaten look, even though it was clearly of the very best cut and fabric. Both her form-fitting top and her pencil skirt were made of shimmering black silk. Trixie's eyes couldn't keep away from the provocatively cut holes here and there in the fabric showing the smooth pale skin below. The way the skirt clung to Chrysalis' legs left little to the imagination – the high-riding lines of the Queen's thong panties were easy to see through the thin fabric, little more than a Y of thin straps.
Trixie forced herself to look away, to pay attention to the turns they were taking in case she had to find her own way back. But it didn't work very well. “Will you come inside?”
That wording... Trixie snapped herself back to alertness. Focus! She couldn't afford to get lost in thought if she was going to avoid being taken advantage of by this bug queen. “Of course.” She stepped in, as if nothing had happened, as if she hadn't just been staring at... Nope, not going to think about it!
Inside, the atmosphere changed completely. She was no longer in a dank cavern full of mysterious smells and dimly lit by occasional crystals. This was luxury. The rough rock walls were replaced by stone chiseled into pleasing curves and polished to a high shine. An enormous chandelier of the glowing crystals hung in the middle of the room, lighting it almost bright enough to make Trixie's eyes hurt – almost, but not quite. A few ornate wooden doors led off into other parts of the suite, and a few dressers and wardrobes lined the walls, along with a couple shelves of books, but most of this room was dominated by a gigantic circular bed in the center of the room. To Trixie's tired eyes, that bed looked like a soft, pillowy paradise. This was the kind of luxurious setting Trixie had always known she was born to have.
The Queen came up behind her, laying a hand across her shoulders.
Too bad this luxury belonged to somebody else. She shuddered at the feeling of the Queen touching her like that, but she didn't dare offend her by pulling away.
“It is getting late in the world above, and you must be tired from your journey and the stress of the fall.”
That much was true, but Trixie stayed on her guard. This woman was not to be trusted.
Chrysalis nudged her forward toward the lovely bed. “Please, make yourself comfortable and get some rest.”
I see where this is going... “And where will you sleep?” Trixie asked her pointedly.
The Queen's eyes glanced significantly toward the same bed.
“Oh no you don't! No way will Trixie sleep in the same bed as you!”
“Oh come now, whatever made you think of that?” Chrysalis gave a smile that would have looked innocent on anyone else's face. Her lush, purple lips curled into a faux pout. “You have quite the imagination, Miss Trixie.” The Queen's voice dropped down into a husky whisper. “I like that in a girl.”
Trixie stared her down. She knows damn well where I got that idea.
“But don't concern your pretty little head.” Chrysalis snaked her body sideways and cocked her hand onto her hip. With the other hand she pointed to a divan against the back wall. “I will sleep there, safely on the other side of the room.”
Still not far enough for comfort, as if anywhere in this hole could be. “I don't know...” Trixie eyed her dubiously. “Is there anywhere else I could stay?”
Shrugging and shaking her head mournfully, Chrysalis sighed. “I'm afraid not. There's the main hive, of course, where the drones sleep. You would find plenty of beds there. But... All of my drones are male, and it has been ever so long since they've had access to a real female who isn't just another drone in disguise.” She licked her lips slowly. “I am not certain I could guarantee your safety if you chose to sleep there.”
What was that lip-licking about? That sicko of a woman is enjoying the thought of me being gang-raped in my sleep by a pack of lust-crazed drones, isn't she? Trixie shuddered. Of course, she might still be telling the truth... It's not worth the risk. Her, at least, I can probably trust. If she wanted to take me by force, she could have already done it. “Sleeping here will be fine.” Then again, if she wants to take me by force later, after toying with me a little, could I really stop her anyway?
“Excellent!” Chrysalis laid herself out on the divan, and it probably wasn't an accident that she struck a particularly alluring pose.
Trixie shook her head and forced herself to look away. That is NOT on the menu, Trixie! Get your head together! It felt weird to be lying down in bed with her traveling coat still on, but there was no way she was going to undress in the slightest with the Queen watching her. So, she only took off her worn traveling boots before flopping herself down onto the bed.
She set herself down sideways to Chrysalis' line of sight. She didn't want to leave her head so easily exposed, but lying with her feet facing the Queen would be too likely to give the woman a view up her skirt. The last thing she wanted was for Chrysalis to comment on her panties – one of the pairs she'd 'borrowed' from Twilight Sparkle after their steamy reconciliation, they were emblazoned with Twilight's cutie mark right across the crotch. She stroked a long, green fingernail against her lips. Of course, I could just take her right now, in her sleep. The thought held more than a little appeal. It wouldn't be the first time I took someone against their will, and it probably wouldn’t be the last. Delightful little thoughts of her time dominating Shining Armor danced in her head. That boy's virgin ass had been so deliciously tight. But no... No, she had more important concerns here.
Taking her while she sleeps may well produce my brood of halflings, but it wouldn’t do anything to promote peace between our peoples. She must do it willingly, must serve as my ambassador to the Ponykin, or recreating the halfling race would only bring more chaos and war.
It was a sad truth, but this would have to be done the hard way, not the fun way ... the long way, not the short way. She settled in, watching her prey sleep and planning just how she would take that Ponykin girl when the time came...
Sleep took Chrysalis stealthily, before she even realized she was nodding off. Somehow, it was so much more peaceful when she wasn't sleeping alone.

Trixie rubbed her face against the plush pillow and snuggled a little deeper into the wonderful silky-soft bed. It was so lovely ... and yet, she had a vague memory of some bad dream last night. She suppressed it as well as she could, not wanting a memory of a bad dream to keep her from enjoying this nice bed. She could just sleep in it all day.
But the bed... It wasn't her bed. Had she shacked up with someone last night? It wouldn't be the first time she used a little romp as an excuse for a sleep in a proper bed. But... Then why was she still wearing her coat? She wasn't wearing her pajamas, nor was she naked save for her panties, which is how she'd be more likely to sleep if she had shared somebody's bed...

Trixie could remember it now, and she was pretty sure it wasn't a dream at all. She bolted upright in the bed, throwing the restrictive blanket away from herself. Chrysalis blinked as if surprised about something, but quickly hid that expression behind a mask of amiability and charm. “Ah, did you sleep well?”
“You!” Trixie leapt out of bed, almost tripping on the soft coverlets, and scrambled to her feet. How did I ever sleep with that monster in the room? “Get away from me!”
The Queen did not get away from her. Instead, she sauntered over close and took Trixie's hand into hers, stroking it softly, reassuringly. “Calm down, please. You have nothing to fear from me.”
Trixie's mind was still a little foggy from sleep, but she did slowly come to realize that was true. If she was going to do something horrible, she would have done it while I was sleeping.
“Have you given any more thought to our arrangement?”
“No!” Trixie tried halfheartedly to pull her hand back, but Chrysalis held it tight. “There is no way Trixie will carry some monster brood! No way I'm going to go to bed with you and have you ravage me. No way I'm letting you touch my body and put your...” She caught herself.
Chrysalis' stroking of her hand had slowly changed from soothing to sensual. Trixie looked down and noticed her own nipples showing even through her top and coat. I should really start wearing a bra ... but they're just so uncomfortable.

“Very well. May I interest you instead in a tour of the caverns?”
Now that was a change of pace, and a difficult decision. It seemed safer to just wait right where she was for the three days until she could get out. But curiosity warred with that caution, a stupid and self-destructive curiosity, she was sure. Then again, am I any safer here, with that bug lady trying to seduce me? There was another curiosity inside her, and that unmentionable one was much more dangerous. At least getting a tour will give something to distract me from ... her.
“We could begin the tour with my royal dining room, and with breakfast...”
That settled it. Trixie's stomach gave her a gurgle of protest – she hadn't eaten yet last night when she fell, and breakfast was sounding very, very good. “Alright.” She nodded. “Trixie will go with you for this 'tour' ... as long as you don't try anything.”
Chrysalis placed her fingertips above her breasts and flashed a coy smile. “Oh don't worry, my dear Ponykin. You can trust me completely.”
Trixie shook her head as Chrysalis turned away. That woman's up to something, and I'm not going to like it. A little voice inside her said, Maybe you will like it. She shut that voice down ruthlessly. No, I am not going there, not even going to think about it. Forcing all the voices in her head to shut up, she followed Chrysalis' swinging hips through the door on the left side of the room.
This room's chandelier of glowing crystals was even more elaborate, but it was empty except for an enormous black stone table that dominated the entire room and the high-backed chairs that ringed around it.
“Please, have a seat,” Chrysalis said, pulling one out for her.
Eying the changeling warily, Trixie sat. She noted the definite lack of any padding on the stone chair, but it would be comfortable enough for now. She also noted how Chrysalis' eyes wandered downward in the direction of her cleavage, so she zipped her coat up tighter, despite how warm it was.
“Five Fifty-seven!” Chrysalis shouted into the empty room. “Five Fifty-nine!”
Two changeling drones rushed in through a small side door, making it inside before Chrysalis had even finished shouting. “How may I serve you, my Queen?” they said in unison.
Trixie couldn't help but stare, and she felt her cheeks heating. The two drones were naked, completely nude, and they made no effort to hide any part of themselves. “Prepare a first-rate pancake breakfast for me and my guest,” Chrysalis told them. “Fresh fruit, whipped cream, everything. As quickly as possible.”
The two nodded and darted away without another word. Trixie couldn't help but to steal a glance at their pale backsides as they scurried back through the door they'd come from. When she looked back at Chrysalis, she winced. The Queen had been watching her, and had no doubt noticed where her eyes had been straying.
Chrysalis met her eyes and grinned.
“I... I'm just not accustomed to seeing—”
“The male genitals when they're not aroused?”
Trixie scowled at her a little for the interruption. “I'm not used to seeing nudity so casually. Do your drones always go around naked?”
Chrysalis smiled and slid into the chair next to Trixie's – of course she picked that one, out of all the chairs here. “Clothes are a disguise, and disguises are not needed for simple drones here in the hive cluster.” She leaned in uncomfortably close to Trixie's ear. “If you'd rather... If it's what you'd prefer to see... I could make them fully erect with just one word.”
“No,” Trixie said, much too loudly. “No, I do not want to see that.”
Chrysalis grinned as if she could see right through Trixie, as if she could see exactly how her extra volume was a poor replacement for her lack of sincerity.
What word would that be, specifically? Trixie couldn't help but wonder. No, that is not enough reason to ask her to do it. Even though I know she would. She couldn't afford to satisfy that little bit of curiosity because she knew there were ulterior motives behind it, motives she couldn’t afford to indulge in her current situation.
“What would you like to see?” the Queen asked.
Trixie glanced down at Chrysalis' body, then caught herself, but not in time. Her host's grin grew even wider, clearly playing with the implications of how that glance answered her question. Steeling herself, Trixie forced her eyes to stay locked on the wall across the room. “Trixie would like to see the way out of these caves and to see her cart again.”
“Unfortunately, that won't be possible until our magic reserves are built up enough again.”
Trixie glanced at her, a little spark of suspicion flickering.
“You're quite lucky, actually.” Chrysalis must have caught that suspicion. She was truly a master manipulator at work. “It takes eleven days to charge up enough magic to send a lift to the surface. You're fortunate to only have to wait three.”
Trixie nodded. Can I really believe her? She might as well believe – she couldn't call Chrysalis out on it. If Chrysalis was telling the truth, it would just unnecessarily antagonize her, and if she was lying, there was no way Trixie could prove it and no guarantee that her situation would change for the better. Best to play along in hopes that she actually could leave in three days.
The two drones returned through the small door, each carrying a glossy black plate stacked high with pancakes and adorned with whipped cream and all kinds of fresh fruit and berries.
How did they manage it so quickly? Trixie wondered.
They set their plates in front of the two women, bowing deeply as they backed away, all without a word.
“Drones,” Chrysalis said.
The two stopped in their tracks and rose to attention. Trixie did not glance at how their dangling cocks wiggled when they did, definitely not.
Chrysalis grinned leeringly at Trixie as she spoke to them, “I think I would like extra cream on my pancakes. The special cream.”

Of course the inevitable happened, and it hadn't taken particularly long, either. Chrysalis was skilled, very skilled at what she was doing. Chrysalis' pace was slow and easy, leading further down the hall, then a turn to the right, which angled steeply downward, down a flight of stairs.
Those stairs were horrifying; the steep and narrow steps went on and on, down and down in one unbroken flight beyond what Trixie could see in the darkness. At least she was wearing her trusty traveling boots. If she'd been in her stage heels on these stairs, she would be fearing for her life the whole way.

When they reached the end of the stairs and stepped out into an echoing chamber, though, Trixie's breath was taken away. Seeming to accept this with aplomb, Chrysalis lowered her hand and led on, deeper into the enormous cavern. “Do watch your step, dearest. The natural cave floor is not as smooth and safe as the tunnels above.”
Bristling at Chrysalis calling her 'dearest', Trixie snorted. I'm a traveling girl. I can handle a little uncertain footing.
The question was, how was Chrysalis managing it in those heels? The jagged stiletto points of them dug into the craggy floor and often made Chrysalis' hips swing wide as she caught her balance, but the Queen still made good time. Trixie saw nothing, heard nothing. For all she could tell, nothing was chasing them. But she could feel something out there in the dark, some unconscious sixth sense, or maybe just her imagination, but she could feel something out there following them, watching her.
When they reached the staircase again, Chrysalis hurried up it without pausing, and Trixie followed, but she could sense how the Queen relaxed the moment they were fully inside the artificial tunnels. Her pace slackened, and her breathing steadied. They were safe again.
Trixie glanced back at the dark hole below her, the opening to the enormous cavern. For all its magnificence and beauty, she did not want to see the place again. It was a place not meant for her kind, and she was not welcome there. She willed her breathing to steady, her heart to slow. They were safe now. She could relax.

“What a shameful waste, then.” Chrysalis shook her head. “Well, there is more of the hive to see. Would you like to see the main cluster?”
Trixie nodded. Anything to change the subject and get away from this awkward situation.
“Very well, follow me.”
As Trixie followed her host down the maze of twisting black tunnels lit by green-glowing stones, she soon came to rationalize what she'd done. It was only curiosity, of course. Perfectly natural. It isn't the best source of energy, nor the purest, but they can survive on it.” She laid a hand on Trixie's shoulder, and Trixie didn't think to shrug it off. “Of course they would prefer real Ponykin women, and they know they're really just mating each other pointlessly ... but it does produce love energy in small amounts. It's enough to get us by as we hide in this hole.”

Two heavily armed and armored drones stood in front of a recessed opening. They saluted when Chrysalis approached. Their black plate armor looked intimidating enough, but it didn't exactly cover all of their vulnerable areas. But maybe that was all part of their armament. Not far down the tunnel, they found their next stop.
“This,” Chrysalis said, “is the nursery section, where all my children are raised and taught everything they need to know to be a good changeling drone.”
They walked through a big communal living area, much like a smaller version of the main hive, but without a stage in the middle, and completely deserted. A doorway led from the far side, though, and that's where they found all the younglings.
The classroom inside was carved out in the shape of an amphitheater, with a rising half-ring of seats around a sunken stage in the middle.
