Chapters Luna could hardly contain her excitement as she crept through the gardens behind her house. She had every intent on visiting her betrothed, whether her parents wanted her to or not. It was a beautiful night and despite finding it hard to see, Luna still admired the beautiful glow the moon gave off, which had lit the path in front of her.
“What would I give just to be up there, just once.” Luna thought to herself.
She was almost at the exit when she noticed a colt within the garden. He was young, around her age for sure. He had a dark blue coat and a mane as black as charcoal with Jade green eyes. His cutie mark was a constellation of some kind, but Luna couldn’t make it out from where she was standing. It looked like he was… stargazing?
Luna looked bewildered. Someone broke into their back yard just so they could stargaze ?
She coughed, drawing his attention. “Excuse me, but you’re trespassing. You need to leave before I call the guards on you.”
He neither gave her a look of satisfaction nor surprise, but instead looked her over and smirked. “Oh come now, it’s a beautiful night out! Surely you wouldn’t want to disrupt the serenity?”
She huffed in frustration, “I most certainly would! How did you get in here anyways? The gate to the garden is locked.”
He sat in a chair that he must have brought with him, kicking his hind legs up. “Sorry to tell you this, but I think you need to buy better locks. It only took me a couple of seconds to get through that one.”
She choked a bit, “You broke into my house?!”
He smiled smugly at her, “First off, yes I broke in. Second, I broke into your back yard, not your house. And finally, it’s not even your house.”
She was irate with anger, did he know who she was? He was talking to the daughter of a noble family. Who was he? Probably a commoner, Luna mused.
“I don’t know who you think you are, but I’m not just going to stand here and be insulted by your rude remarks!”
He sat up from his chair and resumed looking through his telescope. “That’s strange, princess. I don’t remember insulting you. Last I recall, the first thing you told me was to leave. That was quite inhospitable of you. And in my opinion, rude .”
Her ear twitched, did he just call me a * princess? That **insufferable little brat*!
He continued to speak before she could retort, “I suppose I’ll be the better pony and disband this little altercation of ours, though I admit it was fun while it lasted. It was nice talking to you, Luna.”
He smirked and walked off with his equipment in hoof as the color in Luna’s face left her. He knew who I was the whole time, and he still had the nerve to break into my house? Is he asking to be thrown in jail?
She caught one last glimpse of him before he left. His cutie mark was a constellation of Taurus.
She groaned audibly. His cutie mark was a bull, how ironic .
To her chagrin, the thoughts that accompanied her were solely based on the stallion she met in the garden. She didn’t even get his name. She smirked, it’s probably not even worth my time to figure it out .
Still, the thought had perturbed her. All her life she had never thought that she’d meet anypony in Canterlot with an attitude like his. How could he act the way he did? Did he treat everypony like this? She shuddered at the thought, he must not have a whole lot of friends .
She immediately started to feel bad. Maybe he stargazes because he doesn’t have anypony else to talk to . She dismissed the thought and chuckled uncomfortably, he probably had plenty of air-headed friends that he would brag to about breaking into a family’s back yard. He might even impress a few of them.
Even though it was pitch black inside the manor, she knew the design of her house well enough to navigate through it. Everypony was asleep, including her father Nebula, who often stayed up much later than the rest of her family.
By the time Luna finally made her way to her room after avoiding countless creaky floorboards, she stopped in her tracks. Celestia was sitting on her bed.
Celestia smirked, “You weren’t out for very long.”
Luna had to keep herself from shouting, “Tia! What are you doing in my room?!”
Celestia giggled, “What are you doing sneaking out of the house? Did you want to visit Ivory?”
Luna blushed visibly against her blue coat, “So what if I did?! It’s not like it’s any of your business anyways.”
Celestia’s expression shifted to a more serious tone, “You may be right about that. But you know how mother and father feel about Ivory Crown, sister. He’s not exactly popular with them.”
Luna groaned and fell next to her sister on the bed, her voice becoming slightly muffled through the pillow as she spoke. “I don’t care about his social status, Tia. The caste system is nothing more than a mere fallacy designed to keep ponies in line.”
Celestia hushed her, “Don’t let mother and father hear you talk like that Luna! We don’t want their reputation among the council to be tainted.”
Luna rolled her eyes at her sister’s behavior, “Speaking of petty, guess what I saw while I was down there?”
Celestia leaned in closer, urging Luna to continue.
“There was colt in our garden. He broke in and started stargazing .”
“Stargazing?” Celestia asked, bewildered at the revelation.
“Yes. And the strangest conversation ensued afterwards. I told him that he was trespassing, to which he reacted with utmost apathy.”
“How rude.” Celestia remarked.
“Not only that. But he picked the gate's lock, set up a chair and even sat back and relaxed like he owned the place.”
“Sounds to me like he was being nothing more than a mere ruffian. We’ll make sure to check on the back gate in the morning. What did you say his name was?” Celestia inquired.
Luna sat there with a blank expression, “I didn't ask his name.”
Celestia groaned in response.
“Hey! It’s not like it matters if I know his name or not! I know what he looks like now, plus he probably attends the same school as us.”
Celestia sat up, “Two things need to happen. First off, find out the name of whichever colt broke into our backyard. Second, stay away from Ivory Crown.”
Luna whined, “Tia! It’s not like I can control who I fall for!”
Celestia glared at her and admonished her one last time before heading to her room, “Luna, you are only sixteen years old. You are too young to understand what love even is. Don’t become ensnared before you are even able to make sense of the situation.”
Celestia shut the door before Luna was able to rebut.
Luna grunted in frustration, “Gah! She’s so annoying!”
Luna did not heed Celestia’s warning about Ivory Crown. Luna was sure that once Ivory realized she took interest in him, he would fall head over hooves for her.
It was high noon. Luna and her classmates had just been released from class and would be given a small break before returning. That was plenty of time to talk to Ivory, she reasoned.
She gulped, apprehension filling her as she approached the bench table he was sitting at. Good thing he’s alone , Luna observed.
He quickly looked up at her, she was only a few feet away from him. He spoke, stuttering a little. “H-Hello Luna! D-Did you need something?”
She smiled at him, “Hello Ivory, I see you are doing well. Just wondering what you were up to?”
He chuckled nervously, “Just doing a bit of light reading.”
She glanced over at the novel he was indulging himself in, Sorceries and Incantations: Volume III .
“Do you have anything planned for later this evening?” Luna inquired.
His eyes widened in response, “I-I don’t think t-that would be a very good idea.”
She pouted at him, “Why not?”
She swore she could see a trickle of sweat run down his head, “I-I’m not available. I’m sorry.”
He quickly sat up and trotted away from her before she was able to protest.
Luna did not see his behavior as disinterested. She thought he was just intimidated by her, though it seemed odd considering he was fairly popular. Especially around other mares , Luna thought as she gritted her teeth.
Throughout the rest of the day, Luna popped out in front of him during random intervals of time, generally asking the same thing. What she hadn’t realized, however, was that his patience grew thinner the more she spoke to him.
By the late afternoon, when all the students were finally being sent home, his patience snapped on her.
“I heard that a new restaurant nearby is opening up, ma-”
“Shut up! ”
Her resolve broke, “W-What?”
He was furious at her, “You heard me you little pest ! Why do you find the need to annoy the living hell out of me all day?! Seriously, go away. Do you honestly think that you’ll get anywhere with anypony acting as clingy as you?”
She broke down crying as she sped off towards the the old cherry tree that her sister used to take her to when she was younger.
It gave her comfort, seeing them in full bloom like this. Though, despite what others may have thought, her favorite season was winter. The calm serenity that the cold brought her, made her happy. It was an intricate and delicate season, like an ivory sculpture.
Ivory.
She cried. She chose a place where nopony would find her, it was better this way.
“I think I preferred it when you were yelling at me. Hearing you cry is a bit hard to listen to.”
What was he doing here ? Why couldn’t she just be left alone?
“What do you want?” Luna asked bitterly, not bothering to face him.
He slowly approached her before sitting down, “Thought you might want somepony to talk to. I don’t know what happened, but being by yourself at a time like this is never a good idea.”
“I don’t need anypony’s help. I certainly don’t need you .” Luna spat.
He waited a few seconds before speaking again, unwavered by her despondency.
“There was a saying that my mother taught me when I was a young colt. A grudge is a lot like an open wound. If it is medicated and treated, it isn’t as bad as it could have been. But if left untreated, it will fester and plague the one who has been inflicted.”
Luna sniffled a little. For the first time, she wasn’t angry at him. “How do you know I wasn’t mourning the loss of somepony I knew?”
He smirked, “You’re an easy tell.”
She laughed a little, “Okay casanova, how does one make amends?”
His expression was serious once more, “You need to apologize for antagonizing him, or get over him at the very least.”
“How did you know I was antagonizing him?!” Luna shrieked, mortified by the statement.
He grinned, “You were fawning over him the entire day during school. I’m surprised he didn’t snap sooner, though he was too harsh in my opinion.”
She blushed furiously, “I’m going to kill you.”
The smile still hadn’t left his face, “You haven’t made an attempt yet.”
She sat there for a few seconds before she realized she was smiling again. He took advantage of the moment, “I know it’s getting late, but maybe you’d be interested in something warm to thaw yourself out?”
She smiled at him before blushing again, “I-I’m sorry, I don’t think I ever got your name?”
He gave her a cocky smile. “My name is Crescent Dusk.”
It was late in the evening. Dusk and Luna sat in the cafe his mother owned. To say they were talking would be inaccurate. It was more of an interrogation if anything.
“So where’s your family?” Luna asked, sipping at her tea.
“My mother is probably out getting supplies and my sister Crystal Clear is probably sitting in the library reading, she is such a bookworm sometimes.”
Luna giggled, “Where’s your father?”
Dusk dropped the spoon he was twirling with his magic, his expression turning morose. “He’s been gone a long time… died, right after mom had me.”
Luna felt horrible, “Oh I’m so sorry! I didn’t mea-”
“Don’t worry about it. It was a long time ago, I can’t even remember him.”
Luna sat there, her expression neutral. She didn’t want to make the situation worse. “I’ve upset him, I should probably just go. ”
He stood up as she did, “Please, sit. You didn’t do anything wrong. I just wanted to talk, and apologize for how I treated you yesterday.”
“You’re apologizing ?” Luna asked incredulously.
“Sounds funny coming from me, doesn’t it?” Dusk asked, grinning.
She stifled a laugh, “Yes, I suppose it does. Don’t think about going soft on me.”
He looked at her for a few seconds before taking a gamble. The sun was setting, and for some reason, he didn’t want to stop talking to her. “Say, the sun is getting quite low. Do you want to go out and stargaze with me tonight?”
Stupid , he told himself. There’s no way she would agree to something li-
“Sure!” Luna exclaimed.
It was his turn to be shocked, “What?”
“Can you show me your telescope? I didn’t get to see it very well the last time I saw you.”
He smirked, “Of course, princess .”
She slapped him.
“Seriously , you hit harder than you let on.” Dusk said as he rubbed his cheek while setting up his equipment.
“Perhaps you shouldn’t have underestimated me.” Luna said as she flashed him a cocky smile.
He smiled, “Oh come on. In all honesty, Princess Luna does roll off the tongue quite nicely.”
She huffed, “I’ve never been a fan of diplomacy.”
He responded almost autonomously, “I can tell. You don’t seem like a big equine lover.”
She slapped him again, though he braced for impact this time.
The night had finally set, and after a long session of mapping out the stars. The two decided to rest upon the hillside, right next to the cherry tree from earlier. At this point, she couldn’t even remember why she had been sad.
“You know for being a sarcastic, apathetic, cynical jerk ; you’re actually quite nice.”
He smirked, “For being an uptight, cold and naive mare; you’re quite nice as well.”
She smiled at him as the two fell asleep under the stars.
The wonderful night that Dusk and Luna had experienced prior was quickly replaced with a rather heated morning as two irate sets of families found their children after a long search. Their expressions were one of shock as they found the two snuggled against each other, sending off a very different message than intended.
“Young lady! I don’t tolerate this behavior under any circumstances! What were you thinking?! Why would you ever become intimate with this low-class ruffian?!” Nebula barked.
Luna shrank back down into the grass, blushing madly. “I-It wasn’t like that father! I wouldn’t do something like that anyways!” She sputtered.
She glanced at her mother and her sister in defense, but all she received was a glare from her mother and a look of disappointment from Celestia.
“You can’t just run off and expect us not to worry! How could you be so selfish?!” Her mother scolded.
“I understand the predicament you find yourself in sister, but I think you know you deserve whatever punishment mother and father deem necessary.” Celestia chimed in, never making direct eye contact.
Luna bit her lip. She wanted to be angry at them, but she knew that her family cared deeply for her, it’s why they showed so much concern. She knew she had done them wrong and was willing to accept any punishment dealt. But there was no chance that she wouldn’t see Dusk one way or another, especially after what had happened. She only hoped that Dusk’s punishment wouldn’t be as severe as hers.
Dusk huddled around his mother and sister. His sister was locked onto his foreleg, her muzzle pressed into his leg.
“Did you at least use protection?” Dusk’s mother quietly asked him.
“Mom!” Dusk hissed in response as Crystal giggled at his reaction.
“Why would he need protection? Did you get hurt Dusk?” Crystal asked curiously.
“I might need some after her father comes over here.” Dusk mumbled as he looked at the family across from him. Luna had her head down and seemed to be taking her beratement rather poorly.
After a few more seconds, Nebula broke away from Luna and approached Dusk and the rest of his family. His glare was sharp enough to cut diamonds.
“Do you have anything to say for yourself, young colt?” Nebula barked.
Dusk inwardly sighed. I need to play my cards right if I ever want to get on her father’s good side. I need to appear nervous, guilty and afraid. Her father seems to be the “stallion of the house” type. If her father reasons that I am truly sorry for what I did, then I might let able to get out of this with little to no repercussions.
Dusk gulped audibly, “I-I’m sorry sir, I-I didn’t mean any trouble.”
Nebula stepped closer, “Do you know who I am?”
Dusk didn’t back down, but he did cower slightly, appearing submissive. “Somepony of high nobility?” Dusk guessed.
Nebula huffed, “That was a good guess kid, I’ll give you that. Listen, I’d like to think that it would be best if we didn’t involve law enforcement. However, I am going to give you a fair warning. If I ever see you near Luna again, I will make sure that you will be punished as I see fit. Understand?”
Dusk exhaled in relief, “Yes sir, I understand. I promise I will not affiliate myself with your daughter under your watch. You have my word.”
“Good.” Nebula replied before walking back towards Luna’s mother. “Let’s go Sol, we have business to attend to at Canterlot palace. Luna, I expect that you will stay at our estate for the rest of the day. Understand?”
Luna slumped in defeat, “Yes sir.”
Dusk’s mother tugged his mane, drawing his attention. “I know that you are probably going to her her again within the next hour or so. Just please, try to be discrete about it alright?”
Dusk gave her a small smile, “Don’t worry about it mom, I’ll be careful.”
She gave him a wink as she trotted away with Crystal in tow. Luna, on the other hoof, was livid. How could he say something like that? She wasn’t going to be able to see him again.
Why do I even care that much? Luna asked herself.
She thought she knew the answer, but there was no way in tartarus she was willing to admit it.
Am I… falling for him? In only two days?
She shook her head. No, that’s ridiculous.
Luna trotted through the school courtyard as she scouted the area. She needed to find Ivory, she needed to apologize for the way she had acted earlier, Dusk was right about that.
“He’s right about a lot of things.” Luna mumbled to herself.
Luna thought she didn’t act on impulse. especially around those of the opposite gender. She wasn’t a wallflower by any stretch of the imagination. Most of the higher nobility allowed their children to be homeschooled rather than attend the university. But Luna’s parents insisted that they attend the school within Canterlot in order to develop well-rounded social skills.
And honestly? They were right.
Luna sighed. Unfortunately, her plan of asking Ivory out on a date was carried out without thought. Even though she thought about him a lot, she didn’t think the plan through.
She glanced over and saw him sitting where he always was. For some reason, she wasn’t nearly as nervous. The butterflies that usually followed her when he was around were absent this time.
“Excuse me Ivory? Can I talk to you for a minute?’ Luna asked as she approached him. She was no longer nervous from speaking to him.
She expected him to be angry, or annoyed at the very least. But he jumped from his seat, taking Luna by surprise. “Luna I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to snap on you. I am willing to g-”
“No, that’s quite alright Ivory. I actually came to apologize myself. You were right, I was being rather annoying. And I’d rather our relationship remain mutual, if that’s alright with you.”
Ivory slumped back down on the bench near him. “Oh, okay. I wasn’t really expecting this. Are you sure? I wouldn’t spending some time with you if you want.”
Luna smiled to herself. “Sorry Ivory. But between my home life and school, I think I have enough on my mind as it is. Let’s not make this more complicated than it has to be alright?”
And with that, Luna walked away, leaving Ivory speechless.
Luna walked home sluggishly, disappointed she hadn’t seen Dusk that day.
He goes to the same school as me, I checked the roster and everything. Crescent Dusk.
She was filled with warmth as she thought of his full name. Then the back of her neck was suddenly cold and wet, for something had hit her at high speeds.
She groaned as she glanced at her mane, it was a spitball.
“Hey Luna! Sorry I couldn’t chat earlier, I was busy studying. Some of this stuff is rough.”
Dusk said as he stuffed the straw back in his saddlebag.
Luna gave a look of disgust as she removed the spitball from her mane, “Real classy. Honestly, couldn’t you just have called out my name?”
Dusk chuckled, “But then I wouldn’t get that priceless expression!”
“Why did you say that to my father!?” Luna snapped.
Dusk double backed nervously, “What do you mean Luna?”
Luna rolled her eyes at him, “You know what I mean. You said you’d never talk to me again. You even promised him tha-”
Dusk put a hoof to Luna’s muzzle, “You misinterpreted my words princess. I promised that I would not affiliate myself with you under your father’s watch . Last I checked, he’s not around. He’s pretty isolated while he’s working in the palace, so I got plenty of leverage.”
Luna smiled, “You really thought things through didn’t you?”
Dusk flashed her a confident smile, “I always do, Luna.”

- James M. Barrie
Despite the celebration after the wedding being long over, Twilight and her friends decided to spend the next few days touring Canterlot. They considered it a well-earned reward after everything they had been through.
However, instead of browsing the latest clothing stores with Rarity or celebrating with Pinkie Pie for the umpteenth time, she chose to visit the palace for the first time in two days.
She needed to speak with Princess Celestia. The question that had been bugging her for the past few days that she hadn’t bothered to bring up was finally starting to itch, she couldn’t avoid it any longer.
Why was Princess Luna not at her brother’s wedding? She didn’t take offense to it, mind you. But being able to sleep through an entire invasion? She would have had to specifically tell every guard not to disturb her that day, otherwise one of them would have woke her at the drop of a hat. So that begs the question once more, why did she sleep in on her brother’s wedding day?
Unable to shake the thought, Twilight quickly sped off towards Canterlot Palace, admiring the scenery and acknowledging any greetings ponies may have given her. It was an absolutely stunning morning, Twilight had to admit.
The guards at the front entrance spotted her before she arrived at the front gate, and made no attempt to stop her as she ran past them. She may not have been royalty, but almost everypony in Equestria knew her name.
Princess Celestia was holding court at the time of Twilight’s arrival, so Twilight made no effort to disturb her at the time. While she revered Princess Celestia for her uncanny magical power and her concise ability to run a kingdom, Twilight never felt like she would suit the role of an alicorn very well. Too many responsibilities , Twilight once noted as she looked over Princess Celestia's schedule.
It gave her a laugh at least.
Waiting for the court session to be over, Twilight quickly thought back to what Luna had said. “Hello everypony! Did I miss anything?”
She smirked. Besides her brother being married and an army of parasitic Doppelgängers invading? Not much.
Still though, it bothered Twilight greatly how nonchalant she was after she told her. Sure she had apologized with sincerity for nearly missing the downfall of Equestria, but she wasn’t surprised in the least that it had happened.
Twilight shuddered at the thought of the number of villains that Princess Celestia and Princess Luna had fought in the past.
It was later in the afternoon when court had finally ended. It hadn’t bothered Twilight much, considering the fact that she had full access to the Royal Archives for an indefinite amount of time. With the wide plethora of knowledge all within hoof’s reach, Twilight had made herself busy for the past few hours.
Much to her embarrassment, she was so engrossed in a research paper involving magical medical sciences, that it was actually Princess Celestia that interrupted her reading.
“Good afternoon Twilight! I’m surprised to see you made another visit back to the castle.”
Twilight looked up from her book to see the alabaster mare before her. She blushed and shot up at once, “O-Oh! Good afternoon Princess!”
Princess Celestia merely giggled in response.
Twilight had remembered why she had come here. Her embarrassment quickly changed into curiosity, “Princess Celestia, I’ve been meaning to ask you. Why did Princess Luna sleep in during Shining Armor’s wedding?”
Princess Celestia’s breathing slowed, a bit of concern showing on her face, just enough for Twilight to see. “Well, she had a rough evening the night before. She asked not to be disturbed the day after.”
Twilight was becoming slightly annoyed, but she tried not to show it. “I understand that, but the entire nation was under attack Princess.”
Princess Celestia gulped.
Twilight sat back down in one of the library chairs. “Princess Celestia, are you lying to me?” Twilight asked, a mixture of betrayal and hurt fused into her voice.
Princess Celestia chose to sit across from her, her voice turning mellow as she spoke. “No, Twilight, I’m not lying to you. But I’m not being entirely truthful either. It is true that she asked not to be disturbed the day of the wedding, but it was I that told everypony not to disturb her under any circumstances whatsoever.”
Twilight gasped, “But why?! Why couldn’t attend the wedding?”
Princess Celestia closed her eyes, “She hasn’t attended a wedding since her own.”
Twilight could only gape at her. There was absolutely nothing regarding either Princess being married ever. As a matter of fact, all forms of written history were destroyed before their origins.
Twilight closed her mouth before prodding further, “Princess, have you always been an alicorn?”
It was so quiet, a pin dropping could echo within the room.
Celestia’s horn lit up. Twilight heard the doors to the archives lock.
“No.”
Twilight almost fainted, “What?”
“While Luna and I are the first of our kinds. We were both unicorns at one time and nothing more.”
Twilight fainted.
When Twilight had finally awoken, she felt a silky pillow pressed against the back of her head.
“I see you are finally awake Twilight. I decided it would be best if we talked about this further in my room. It wouldn’t be right to seal off the archives just so we could have a chat, right?”
Twilight sat up, hope and excitement in her voice. “You’d be willing to talk about it?”
Celestia pulled up a chair next to Twilight, as if she was reading a bedtime story to her daughter.
Her gaze was stern, “Twilight I’m giving you information that hasn’t been known for the past millennia and a half because I trust you and I know that you’ll never rest easy until you understand. Can I trust that you won’t disclose this to anypony else, including your friends?”
Twilight gave her a determined look, “You can count on me Princess!”
Celestia smiled before continuing. “Well then, I suppose I should start from the beginning.”
