Hoofsteps echoed across a vacant red-painted room as a milky blue unicorn stallion limped in. The huge windows on the other end of the room already illuminated his surroundings with beams of sunlight. His eyes, a darker shade of his coat, flickered around, whilst his matching spiked mane rippled in the air like waves of the ocean.

A few moments passed until a white unicorn filly scrambled in after him, revealing her red and blue long mane and tail. Her eyes were bicolored, one an orange and the other a lighter shade of blue. They were stretched wide with fear. Another slender shape was high on their heels; it was a dull yellow unicorn mare with a long, rippling fiery mane and eyes.

"Papa!" The filly wailed as the mare closed the door shut, sprinting ahead to the stallion's embrace as he sat down towards her, his burned forehoof lifted in the air, reflecting it was in too much pain to be set down. The filly seemed to notice this, as she skidded to an abrupt halt just before she can spring into his grasp, her eyes glassing over with hot tears.

"Phoebe!" The older mare gasped in a hushed voice, hurrying ahead to the filly's side so she can embrace her herself. "It's okay, dearest," she reassured her gently, nuzzling her head with her muzzle, "It was just an accident. Your father is okay now."

"No, he's not!" She objected in a shrill voice, tugging herself free of the mare's grasp to glare up at her through glazed optics. "I don't know what happened! It was just a normal day at school, and all my friends were learning how to levitate stuff. So I tried, too, and i was actually having a good time. But then something bumped into me and scared me, and i started shooting fire and ice everywhere! Half of my school is burned, and the other is iced over, and I hurt my father, and it's all my fault! And everybody saw it, too. Everybody thinks I'm here to hurt them now! They're scared of me!"

The mare took a step towards her daughter, but was stopped by the stallion's hard stare. "Leave it to me, Brenneke," he seemed to mouth before turning back to Phoebe. Brenneke hesitated, about to object, but murmured "be gentle, Ren" instead.

Ren fixated his gaze, two huge moons, back on Phoebe. "It will be fine, I promise," he murmured. "And you won't have to go to that school anymore." Phoebe seemed to freeze at this, but Ren went on without hesitation. "Do you Canterlot's magic schools? They wanna adopt you."

"Isn't that wonderful?" Brenneke added, although her voice cracked ever so slightly. "You're special! Only the most talented ponies go there."

Phoebe seemed to pause, debating this. "I guess it'll be okay," she sniffed eventually. "I mean, nobody will probably like me there, anyway. And I don't want hurt anyone. It'll be okay, right?"

The parents exchanged a glance before falling into silence.

Perking her ears at this, Phoebe repeated, "right?"

Finally, Brenneke broke the silence with: "You'll have to move there, darling. Princess Celestia requested a close watch over you."

"What?" Phoebe squeaked, eyes stretching wide with panic once again. "No! I don't wanna go!" Tears started streaming down her cheeks again. "I don't wanna leav-" her sob was cut off by a brisk knock on the door that froze Phoebe's hooves to the ground. Before anyone could answer, two royal guards broke in.

"Princess Celestia requests Phoebe right now!" One of them spoke sternly.

"We were just telling her that," Brenneke chipped in almost instantly, walking ahead to confront the royal guards. "If you only give us some time-"

"No time!" The other one snapped in an identical voice. "The princess's orders are n-"

"Oh, stop it, Mr. This is not how this should go," a calm voice interrupted, and everypony tilted their heads to see none other than Princess Celestia walk in. She had the same kind smile plastered across her face, and her rich, warm gaze trailed over Phoebe sympathetically. "It's okay, little one," she murmured when Phoebe was about to dash to Brenneke's tail, "I mean no harm. However, I noticed you have some remarkable magic to show all of us. Nopony can control the power of ice and fire, can they?"

"No," Phoebe snapped, glaring furiously at the older mare. "Nopony can, and that's exactly why I'm weird. I don't wanna have that. I wanna remove it!"

Ren's gaze flashed with alarm, whilst Brenneke closed her eyes as if wishing she was anywhere but in this position. However, Princess Celestia's voice remained friendly and even as she said, "I cannot do that, little one. Even my magic cannot remove such intense power. Listen, Phoebe—your magic and special talent is nothing to be ashamed of." she paused to point at her flank that had a heart plastered across of it, partially red and partially blue, one rippling like fire and the other decorated with snowflakes- "You'll find your place in the world, but only if you actually come and learn how to control it. You cannot make fear your enemy now."

Phoebe paused, weighing her options, then said, "you mean my talent isn't hurting everypony?" When the princess shook her head with a smile, she took a deep breath and announced, "okay, I'll go with you."

"And you won't regret it. Guards!" She added in a brisker tone, straightening up. "Take Phoebe to my castle now, and make sure that everybody treats her like she's at home. I'll get the necessities from her parents myself. Go!"

Phoebe hesitated, but didn't have much more options- she was pushed ahead by the guards until she was out of her parents' sight.

Once they were gone, Brenneke broke out into a sob. "Oh, Celestia…"

"You did the right thing," the Alicorn mare reassured her with a sympathetic blink. "Trust me when I say, Phoebe will have a great destiny."

I'm trying to test my writing skills which means this story is an experiment that my main goal is to finish; I'm not expecting it to be a top 10 c:
